    1. AFTER ENTERING COCKPIT

    Unlock surface controls

Check landing gear handle in the "DOWN" position

Check flaps handle in the "UP" position

Check emergency hydraulic hand pump. Note increase in system on gage

Check operation of flight controls and trim tabs through complete rangeUnlock brakes and check for action. Reset parking brake

Check the instruments for clean glasses. Set the altimeter

    Check gun switch is "OFF"

Check that airplane ignition switch is "OFF"

    Turn master battery "ON"

    Test all warning lights

    Check quantity of fuel

Note reading of oxygen system pressure gage

Check operation of intercoolers and oil-cooler doors through complete range. Set at "NEUTRAL"

If battery has been "ON" turn to "OFF" when check is completed

Check propeller governor full forward "INCREASE RPM". In addition, on airplanes with Curtiss ElectricPropeller, check selector switch is "AUTOMATIC"

Place fuel booster pump rheostat, on main switch box, to "START and ALTITUDE"

    2. STARTING ENGINE

Set fuel selector valve to "MAIN"

"Crack" throttle open approximately one inch

    Supercharger control full aft

Check mixture control handle in "IDLE CUT-OFF"

On electric propeller installations, propeller switch in "AUTOMATIC"

Propeller governor control "INCREASE RPM" (full forward)

Fuel booster pump rheostat set to "START and ALTITUDE"

Air filter set "ON" if dust conditions so indicate

Prime two to four strokes f hot and four to six if coldMaster battery switch "ON"

    Set ignition switch to "BOTH"

Flick starter switch to "ENGAGE" and immediately return to "OFF"

"ENERGIZE" for not more than 20 seconds and switch to "ENGAGE" for maximum period of 30 seconds

If engine fails to start, let starter to cool for at least one minute before repeating procedure

When engine starts, move mixture control to "AUTO-RICH" and throttle to 900 RPM

    3. ENGINE WARM-UP AND ACCESORY CHECK

Check oil pressure at once. If not 25 psi in 30 seconds, shut off engine

Oil pressure should raise to about 150 to 200 psi. Do not exceed 1000 RPM until oil pressure drops tonormal

Run at 800 to 1000 RPM until oil pressure is normal and oil temperature is 40C. In cold weather, closeoil shutters during warm-up. During warm weather, leave oil shutters at "NEUTRAL". Always keepcowl flaps open on ground

    4. ENGINE AND ACCESSORIES OPERATION GROUND TEST

When warm and with propeller control set for "INCRESE RPM" check magnetos

Airplane with Curtiss Electric Propeller: Turn propeller selector to "AUTOMATIC"Open throttle to 2000 RPM, 30 in. Hg. and test each magneto. Drop in RPM should not exceed 50

    on either magneto.

Airplane with Hamilton Standard Propeller: Open throttle to 2000 RPM, 30 in. Hg. and test each magneto.Drop in RPM should not exceed 100 on either magneto.

Check proper functioning of propeller by operating governor control several times. Check manualoperation of Curtiss Electric Propeller by operating selector switch

Check for generator charge on ammeter

Check oil pressure and temperatureCheck fuel pressure

Check water pressure: 30 to 32 psi at 2000 RPM on ground

Check gage for correct hydraulic pressure

Operate engine from each fuel tank

    5. TAKE-OFF

    FINAL CHECK:

Trim tabs set for take-off. If auxiliary tank is full, set elevator tab 1/4 inch forward of white mark

    Mixture control "AUTO-RICH"

    Propeller control "INCREASE RPM"

    Fuel selector "MAIN TANK"

    Flaps "UP"Cowl flaps "OPEN"

    Canopy open

Run engine up to 1400 RPM. Check for operation of the generatorTAKE-OFF PROCEDURE:

    "LOCK" tail wheel

Push throttle to approximately 30 in. Hg. while holding airplane with the brakes. Release breaks and withfirm and even pressure open throttle to take off stop

As soon as the airplane is off the ground, move safety latch and raise landing gear leaver to "UP". Leavelever at "UP" until it is desired to lower the landing gear.

    6. CLIMB

Best climbing speed is 150 to 165 MPH

Keep cowl flaps "OPEN", check cylinder head temperature frequently. If over 260C, increase airspeed.Check oil temperature 95C and carburetor air temperature 35C

    7. APPROACH AND LANDING

    APPROACH:

Check for sufficient fuel for landing

Reduce speed to 140 to 150 MPH

    Mixture control "AUTO-RICH"

    Electric propeller "AUTOMATIC"

    Engine 2550 RPM

    Engine controls InterconnectedCowl flaps "CLOSED"

Move landing gear handle "DOWN" when airplane slows to 200 MPH. The landing gear warning light willgo out when gear is locked

Landing flaps "DOWN" under 195 MPH. Check their position by observation from cockpit. If partial flapsare desired, return handle to "NEUT" when desired angle is achieved

Normal approach speeds 115 to 120 MPH (engine on), 120 to 130 MPH (engine off)LANDING:

    Tail wheel "LOCKED"

    8. STOPPING ENGINE

Apply toe brakes and set parking brake leaverWhen cold weather is anticipated, dilute oil as follows:

Operate engine to 1000 to 12000 RPM

Maintain oil temperature below 50C and oil pressure above 15 psi

Hold oil dilution switch "ON" as required by ground temperatures:4C to -12C - 3 minutes

    -12C to -29C - 8 minutes

Operate boost control at least 14 complete cycles during last 2 minutes of dilution period

When Hydrometic propeller is installed, place lever full rear and increase RPM at least 4 times duringdilution period

Open engine to 1000 RPM and place mixture control in "IDLE CUT-OFF", holding the dilution switch"ON" until the engine stops

After propeller stops rotating turn ignition switch "OFF"

    9. BEFORE LEAVING COCKPIT

    Fuel selector valve "OFF"

All cockpit light switches, pitot heat, master battery etc. "OFF"If windy, lock flight controls to prevent damage

    10. MISC
