PAGE 1- 2019 HSE PRESENTERS Bio: Starla brings over 35 years year of teaching and brings a rich background of experience ranging from coaching, athletic training, all levels of Biology, college instruction of Anatomy, and years of on-site medical observation. She has been presenting successful teaching methods with teachers during conferences and staff development workshops for over 23 years. Her teaching experience includes Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Pathophysiology, AP Biology, Pre-AP Biology, and standard Biology. The success of Starla's teaching strategies and increased student understanding of difficult material through the use of hands-on activities and teaching tricks has led her to share with teachers, massage therapists, and medical personnel nationwide. Starla also works with new year teacher mentorship programs to facilitate a successful transition into the teaching profession and staff developments for campus faculty to coordinate a successful and consistent learning environment for students. Bio:

Zoe McDowell is a Licensed Master Social Worker and has been working with both children and adults who have experienced some sort of trauma since 2007 to include veterans who suffered from PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries as well as physically disabled children and adults. Zoe is the Director of Clinical Services at the DCAC in Lexington, SC and oversees the counseling program, maintains a caseload as well as conducts forensic interviews.

Bio: Dr. Yeargin is an associate professor of athletic training. She was a task force member of the Pre-Season Heat-Acclimatization Guidelines for Secondary School Athletics and co-author for the NATA and ACSM position statements on exertional heat illnesses. Dr. Yeargin also serves as an expert for the Korey Stringer Institute’s Medical Advisory Board. She has 15 years of experience conducting research, 40 peer-reviewed publications in the content area.

Bio: A mother of two amazing daughters. In addition to teaching, Athletic Training, and a passion for medicine, she likes to ride horses, travel and spend time with her family.

Bio: Nancy Mallini is a retired CTE Director with 42 years of experience in Career and Technical Education. She has a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University, a master’s degree from Western Kentucky University, and a Superintendent certification from the University of St. Thomas. She is currently an Education Consultant for Kaduceus Inc., a Health Science certification curriculum company.

Bio: Katrina is a recipient of the 2019 CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship program. She spent a week at the CDC in Atlanta in July 2019 where she worked in groups writing lesson plans for teachers on disease and public health topics. Katrina will be co-presenting with the CDC representatives at the NCHSE conference about the fellowship program.

Bio: Lauren is the Senior Education Outreach Specialist for the South Atlantic region and has been with CareerSafe Online for the past 6 years. As a new parent she knows how important it is to make safety a priority. She is passionate about educating students and educators about the importance safety plays in everyday life, and truly believes no job is worth a young workers life.

Bio: Anne was Born and bred "across the pond," where she was educated at Cambridge University in the UK, and holds a degree in French, English and Education. She has worked with AES for over 20 years, and is passionate about helping students (and their instructors) to succeed! She moved to Bluffton, South Carolina in 2018...and loves the southern hospitality (and weather)!

Bio: Rhonda is the current SC HSE President, a true honor. She teaches Health Science in Anderson, SC, at the Anderson Institute of Technology. Rhonda enjoys bringing knowledge and gaining knowledge from her fellow educators. She has been married for 15 years, has two children, and one grandson. Travel is one of Rhonda’s favorite things to do!

Bio: Karen currently teaches at Spring Hill High School where she is also a HOSA advisor. She enjoys spending time with her two young energy filled daughters, horseback riding and gymnastics.
