Year 3 - Writing - Home Learning Week 1.
Context notes for parents:
The Writing Legends website is an interactive website that allows teachers to give feedback on the work the children produce as well as allowing children to publish their writing for their classmates to read. The programme gives the children flexibility to be creative about what they are writing. We have signed up to this website to trial during home learning so that we can see how the children are getting on with the tasks. Your child will be sent their own username and password for the website. Please do let us know how you get on with this - your feedback is important to us!

The website presents children with different creative writing tasks. ‘Quick Writes’ are an initially timed task for 10 minutes, but please encourage your child to spend around 30 minutes on the task, as per the suggested timetable; they could spend 10 minutes planning and have time for proof-reading and editing their work. ‘Full writes’ are writing tasks which require slightly deeper thinking so time is planned for the children to carefully plan, consider their vocabulary, draft and edit their work before publishing it.
Monday 20th April Session 1: Missing Punctuation/ Setting up your profile in Writing Legends
Within each writing task, we would like children to try to include direct speech so they can practise punctuating speech correctly, using inverted commas (also known as speech marks). We have been using direct speech in our story writing since September so the children should be familiar with the way speech should be punctuated:
“ -> Capital letter -> what they say -> punctuation to finish -> “
To remind them of how to use inverted commas in their writing, below is a link to a BBC Bitesize video clip and short quiz. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/ztcp97h
After having a go at the Bitesize activity, complete one of the sheets on directed speech. You will need to add the correct punctuation to the text. The punctuation you need will be given to you in a box at the top of the sheet. See below which task to do. Choose the task carefully:
● Page 1 - If your child is less confident with writing (answers are on page 2)
● Page 3 - Most children will be able to do this sheet (answers on page 4) ● Pages 5-6 - For those who need a challenge, the whole text needs to be
written out, using the ‘new speaker, new line’ rule (answers on pages 7-8) When you have completed that task, you need to log onto Writing Legends, using the username and password you have been sent, to get yourself set up ready for your first online task tomorrow!

Tuesday 21st April Session 2: First write - Poor Puddles
Log into Writing Legends, choose the home tab and complete the task ‘Poor Puddles’ from the four choices given by clicking on the picture. Next, click the podcast icon under the picture to hear a podcast which will explain what you need to do. (Warning - this is a programme from New Zealand, so the people in the podcast have New Zealand accents.) In addition to the podcasts, you can
click on the writing icon to get some sample responses to give you an idea of what to write.
Although this is a 10 minute writing activity the timing isn’t limited so you can carry on writing. There are ‘trending words’ that will appear in a box. These are words that have been used a lot by other students when writing on the chosen topic. Can you include these words in your writing? When you are ready to start, click on the ‘lets get started’ button, then the ‘begin’ button on the next page. To show the ‘Trending Words’, slide the button below it to the right. Then you are ready to start writing. Don’t forget to use direct speech in your writing.
Wednesday 22nd April Session 3: Quick Write: Perplexed
Please visit https://www.writinglegends.com/login.php?r=GB
Today’s Quick Write gives the definition of the word before you begin. Read this carefully so you understand what the word means.
The task is to write about Bob’s adventure. You must start with the sentence - The spaceship rattled as it broke through the clouds of an undiscovered planet. Bob could not believe what he was seeing.
Try to use the trending words in your writing and don’t forget to use direct speech in your writing.
Thursday 23rd April Session 4: Full Writes: Fascinating Facts
Please visit https://www.writinglegends.com/login.php?r=GB
Today we are going to start a Full Write. A Full Write takes a little longer than the 10 minute short writes. Click on the icon for Fascinating Facts.
Read the instructions on the page carefully:
Today you will be planning your writing, researching your topic on the internet or you may wish to use some books you have at home. Listen to the podcast and read the sample responses to give you an idea. You only have 30 minutes so don’t spend too much time on this.
One you have your facts, click on the Plan & draft button to take you to a screen where you can complete the boxes with the notes you have found out about your chosen topic.
Once you have completed your boxes you can draft your writing in the box below. It will give you a word count, so you don’t have to count for yourself. Remember, this is a draft and not the final edit. You will have a chance tomorrow to revise and edit.
Once you have finished your drafting, click the I’m finished drafting button and it will save your work.
Friday 24th April Session 5: Full Writes: Fascinating Facts
Please visit https://www.writinglegends.com/login.php?r=GB
The task for today is to revise and edit the work you did yesterday. When you click the Revise and Edit button, you will be able to see your notes from yesterday.
When you are editing your work, remember to use the trending words for Fascinating Facts, you may not be able to use them all as it would depend on what you are writing about, but you should include at least two of the words..
Edit your work so it looks exciting to read. You may want to change the way you have laid your work out.
When you click I’m finished, you will get a chance to make one last edit. Once you are happy with your work, click the I’m finished button and your work will be submitted.
