Generate more funds for Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed
Raine & Horne Upper Mt Gravatt/Mansfield recently donated $10,000 to
boost the funds for the new building.
Raine & Horne Upper Mt Gravatt will donate $1,000 for every property that is sold by them, and referred by a member of the Mt Gravatt Men’s
Shed. If you know of anyone who is thinking of selling their property,
please contact Bill Hooper on 0403 967 866 or 3349 8844. For new
property managements referred by the Club, Raine & Horne Upper Mt Gravatt will donate $250 to the Club
funds.

S H E D T A L K
Hi Shedders,
On behalf of the Management Committee, I extend to you and to your dear
ones a very Happy and Healthy New Year. 2012 is going to be a momentous
year for our organisation. I hope that you are as excited as we are to an-
nounce that we are to commence our building very shortly.
You are all invited to the official sod-turning on our ground on Tuesday 31st
January 2012. (Please refer to the separate invitation). This will be signifi-
cant as it marks the commencement of our building. The plan is that we will
commence building immediately after and will complete the building within four months weather permitting.
I am sure that you are aware that we (you and I) are going to manage the construction under the direct guid-
ance of our member extraordinaire, Bob Pope. The building will be subcontracted out and we will contribute
where we can.
As I indicated in the December issue, we will require assistance in various ways. We are looking to save money
by obtaining materials and some services at cost.
If you have any skills or experience in this kind of operation, could you let me know as soon as possible by
phone or email. If you know of anyone who could help us obtain NEW materials at a very reasonable cost,
please let me know. The sorts of materials are:
Concrete Steel reinforcing
Concrete blocks Windows
Doors Roller doors
Timber roof trusses Corrugated iron roofing
Timber Wall sheeting
Insulation Kitchen cupboards
Toilet items
We are looking forward to your support, however small or large, to assist the building group wherever possible.

.Another year has gone by and we now have a New Year with renewed expectations for
our men’s shed. Our building committee has been working hard {even over the Christ-
mas break} to enable our Men’s Shed to be built as soon as possible. Some results of
their hard work is that our Sod Turning ceremony is being held on 31st January
2012.Construction of our building should commence a short time after that date.
I wish to extend my appreciation to all members for your commitment to Men’s Shed in
2011. Our Christmas break-up at Mt Gravatt Bowls Club was again a great success and I
wish to thank all wives/partners for their support. Have you any ideas for our next Christ-
mas break up to make it bigger and better?
With our own shed we will not only increase in numbers but in quality and content. WE,
AS MEN SHED MEMBERS, CAN ASSIST IN MANY WAYS such as attending monthly meet-
ings and functions regularly and being involved in the activities that have been ar-
ranged.{ any suggestions or ideas you have would be greatly appreciated}. Encourage
non-members to visit our meetings and functions or to become committee members.
Take the opportunity to meet and make friends at Men’s Shed meetings and func-
tions.
REMEMBER YOUR WELFARE COMMITTEE CAN ASSIST YOU If there are any members
that you know is sick at home or in hospital we can contact or visit them or assist
them in their circumstances where practical or possible. We can also arrange transport to or from men’s shed meetings or
functions. See you all at our first meeting for 2012 on 6th February 2012.
WELFARE
This month we record a Community Project with a different flavour. Member Don
Ritchie responded to a request from Seville Road State School to provide carpen-
try assistance to Year 6 pupil projects.
The pupils had been studying medieval times and the project selected was to de-
sign and construct model catapults ( no — not a shanghai! ) from plywood. Some
of the results can be seen in the photo below.
Both boys and girls were involved in planning, drawing and cutting out using a
coping saw. The catapults were assembled using battery driven screwdrivers and
then painted and decorated. The students reported the experience as a well–
rewarding one.
The other picture is the best I could get of Don! Another member Col Watford did
the art work.

A group of seniors were sitting around talking
about all their ailments.
"My arms have gotten so weak I can hardly lift
this cup of coffee," said one.
"Yes, I know," said another. "My cataracts are so
bad; I can't even see my coffee."
"I couldn't even mark an "X" at election time, my
hands are so crippled," volunteered a third.
"What? Speak up! What? I can't hear you!"
"I can't turn my head because of the arthritis in
my neck," said a fourth, to which several nod-
ded weakly in agreement.
"My blood pressure pills make me so dizzy!" ex-
claimed another.
"I forget where I am, and where I'm going," said
another.
"I guess that's the price we pay for getting old,"
winced an old man as he slowly shook his
head.
The others nodded in agreement.
"Well, count your Blessings," said a woman
cheerfully - - "Thank God we can all still drive!"

gram and how to participate in it..
The Lighten Up to a Healthy Lifestyle Pro-
gram is a healthy lifestyle group program for
adults who want to improve their health.
Lighten Up was developed by and is funded
by Queensland Health. It assists people to
eat well and be active, manage stress and
make long term behaviour changes to sup-
port a healthy lifestyle.

Suggestions for using WD-40 spray
1. Protects silver from tarnishing. 2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.
3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings. 4. Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them slippery.
5. Keeps flies off cows . (Now that’s a useful one! ED. )
6. Restores and cleans chalkboards. 7. Removes lipstick stains. 8. Loosens stubborn zippers.
9. Untangles jewelry chains. 10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing. 13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.
14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots. 15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
16. Keeps scissors working smoothly. 17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.
18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on
flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off.
Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.
19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!
20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.
21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers.
22 Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.
23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.
24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.
25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.
26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles. 27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans
28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling
29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.
30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.
31. Removes splattered grease on stove. 32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs. 34. Keeps pigeons off the deck (they hate the smell!).
35. Removes all traces of duct tape.
36. Some people even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.( If you try this one
.,please let me know if it works! ED.)
37. Florida 's favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.'
38. The favorite use in the state of New York - WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.
39. WD-40 attracts fish. ( See P.S. below) Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big
ones in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose.
40.WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.

The last social meeting for the year was the Christmas Party at Mt Gravatt Bowls Club. Attended by over 100,
the occasion was once again a tribute to the organising capabilities of Elwyn Jackson. Guests included Cabinet
Ministers Phil Reeves and Cameron Dick, local councillor Krista Adams and the gentlemen in the photo below
who have rendered valuable assistance to Bob Pope in the preparation
needed before starting construction of our Shed.
As was the case last year, the meal was excellent, the back-ground mu-
sic very restful and the level of animated conversation indicated a very
good time was being had by all.
Highlights of the dinner were the announcement that the new lease
with the Show Ground Trust had been signed, the presentation of
three $100 Bunning’s vouchers by Graeme Smith of Mt Gravatt Rotary.
President Brian Wheeler made a special point of thanking all those
who had helped the Shed in 2011 in what proved a momentous year.
CAN YOU HELP AT THE SOD TURNING CEREMONY?
WE need volunteers to help on an adhoc basis at the event. Jobs could possibly in-
clude erecting the shade tents, car parking, directing where to go, moving chairs, help-
ing the elderly(?), at the morning tea, dismantling of the set-up at the end etc
If you have not been able to help so far, this could be a valued opportunity.
