Now in its fourth year, Kent Miners’ Festival isagain hosted by Aylesham, on the villagegreen at the heart of this coalfield village,purpose-built for miners and their familiesand at the centre of the coalfieldcommunities.

The committee is pleased to build on thesuccesses of last year’s event at this venueto bring you another great FREE communityfestival, filled with music, fun, games andthe chance to learn about organisations andservices that we all can enjoy the wholeyear long.

In Snowdown’s centenary year, I would like totake the opportunity to thank all of the peoplewho have helped to make this year’s festivalhappen, especially our major sponsors,Aylesham Co-operative and Aylesham andDistrict Community Workshop Trust. Many supporters help in very visible roles, but many more volunteers assist them withadministration, management and otherunglamourous roles without which the eventcould not take place. Special thanks go to ourcommittee and events team who have workedtirelessly to co-ordinate activities and also toDeal and Walmer Lions Club for their helpthroughout the year and assistance on the day.

This year the festival welcomes back the “YourNHS, Your Health” marquee. Mandy and herteam of experts return to offer health checks, medical advice for all age groups and first aidinformation. A live link to a hospital expertwill be available for referrals and on the spotconsultancy.

By the time you read this welcome page, plansfor next year's festival will be already under way.I welcome any new sponsorship deals, newideas, or any offers from alternative areas, wishing to host this festival for 2013/14.

It remains to thank you for your support andto wish you a most enjoyable day.

Imagine the very best Channel Island milk and full fat

cream, sourced from our neighbouring cows.

Every succulent drop, farm assured. Take real coee,

British sugar and some real artisan skill and blend the

mixture slowly and with great care. When the texture,

colour and avour is deep and consistent, place in

one of our heavenly tubs and freeze, here on the farm.

The avour is deep and smooth, the texture rich and

creamy. This is the highest quality real dairy ice cream,

truly award-winning and very, very moreish.

This year is the 100 year anniversary ofcoaling at Snowdown Colliery. Today thereare no mines left in Kent but the community isstill there and the spirit is still strong. The people of Aylesham have stood tall anddeclared that our Heritage would not beforgotten. Music has always been an important part oflife in the Kent Coalfield. This festival we havetraditional music from both the SnowdownColliery Welfare Band and BetteshangerBrass Band. Snowdown Colliery Welfare Bandwas formedin 1926 and consisted entirely of miners fromthe colliery. Today, although mining has ceasedin Kent, the band continues the colliery’s musicaltradition with around 30 musicians. Three players are ex-miners and other members’fathers were miners and played in the band. The band competes and performs regularly, winning Scala Band of the Year in 2011.Deal based Betteshanger Brass Band wasformed in 1932 by miner George Gibb and

his colleagues as a toolfor relaxation after theirdays toil underground. With a long history ofsuccesses at nationaland internationalcompetitions, the band

goes from strength to strength and can nowbe found at the 'Betteshanger Social WelfareSports Club' in Mill Hill, Deal.DAPA dancers will perform Irish, Street andLyrical dances and Maddie’s Melody Makersbring us favourite songs in harmony.Aylesham Ladies Choir will be performingmusic from the shows and singer Dana Jarviewill entertain us with her solo performance.

On stage we will also welcome some upbeatsounds from jazz pop duo ‘DaylightSavings’, a glorious mix of music from‘Helluvaday’ and new four piece band forthe south east ‘Machines Like Us’

performingfavouritestandards ofpop, rock souland evenswing music.

Throughout the day Accidental Collectivepresents 'everyONE is looking for someONE'.Two peculiar figures are wandering about, lost. Have they been separated, or never metbefore? Will you help them find one another? At times surreal, attimes moving, andoften out-right-funny ,the two Monty Python-esque figures pop upall around and, whenthey finally meet, willdelight you withsketches and songs.

This year the Oysterband are touring, so areunable to play for us, but send this message:"Oysterband send warm greetings to all atthe Kent Miners Festival and best wishes inkeeping that amazing fighting spirit alive.."
