The donation to NDHS villhelp fund the Alliance forCatholic Education a servicethrough teaching program thatgives college graduates theopportunity to earn master ofeducation degrees while scrv-ing as full-time teachers inunder-resourced Catholicschools. The donation willpay for tuition as well as a

stipend for those teachersserving at NDHS.

"The partnership betweenACE and NDHS reflects thedeep commitment we share insupporting the criticallyimportant educational missionof the Congregation of HolyCross," noted Rev. TimothyScully, CSC, ACE founderand Director of the Institutefor Educational Initiatives.

Notre Dame High Schoolvill also use the funding tofurther educate existing staffby providing additional train-ng as well as offering profes-

Patrick 1-lannon, CSC,said, "are predicated uponoutstanding teachers, coun-selors, coaches, and adultmentors. The Foundation'sgenerous grant will give usthe resources we need toensure that our teachers willbe at the cutting edge of theircraft."

Plaza Bank opens seventhbranch in Nues

Workers from White Way Sign Company put up the PlazaBank sign the day before opening,

ùnlocked the doors oftheir newest branch bank

this week at the comer of Harlemand Touhy in Nues. This is thegeventh branch in the Chicagoarea for Pláza Bank, which hasbeen in business for nearly 40years, and under its current man-agement for,thó past 14 years. Agiant multicolored balloon marksthe bank's grandopening on oneofthe village's busiest comers, alocation Plaza Bank PresidentRobert Wareham says couldn'tbe better. . .

'We always like corners," saidWareham. .'qt gives us good visi-bility, and we've always likedNiles. We think it's a veryvibrant community."

Plaza bought out the 2500square foot building from a corn-petitor about six months ago andonly recently finished its pernod-eling. With six more bränches inthe system, and two more in theworks in . other ., suburbs, Vice-president. Ken Meyer says theyfeel confident they can stay cornpetitiy.e, espeialIy when . it.comes to loans

"We can. draw on the strength

of our 7 banks," said Meyer."That way we can compete withthe bigger, downtown banks."Because Plaza Banks are a local-ly owned system, the turn aroundtime for loan approval can befaster. "It cornes down to serviceand convenience, said Wsreham.

"We don't have to go to anelaborate committee structure forapproval. We have local dcci-sions and control."

The branch will offer all theservices of its other branches, and will highlight its grand open-ing this month with free glass-ware sets with every new check-ing account. But it's the personalservice that a.smaller bank groupcan offer that they hope will real-'y draw in new customers.

"Personal service had been leftbehind,' said Vice President

Richard Kolakowski. "This isgood old time banking." The

MIKE SANTORO ANDANDREW SCHNEIDER

Michael MaRous, 6th WardAlderman, was elected Tuesdaynight to serve as the acting mayor ofPark Ridge for the remaining 19months of Ron Wietcha's term.MaRous is only the second actingmayor in Park Ridge's history. Sixvotes had to be taken over a twohour, 45 minute period before thecity council selected MaRous, whohad initially decliñed to be consid-ered for the position.

"Park Ridge is successful becauseyoung people want to return," saidMaRous. "If we do it right and cre-ate a town that they like, they'llwant still want to return to be resi-dents of Park Ridge."

MaRous currently serves as thechairman of the city's finance corn-miftee. His elevation to the post wasunexpected, as he had initiallydeclined to be nominated.

"I was disappointed when Mike[MaRous] said he wasn't seekingthe position," said AId. MichaelTinaglia (Ist). "I thinkAld. MaRousis thó perfect candidate. He, morethan I, more than any other candi-date bridges the gap between thenew and the old."

In a city council that was recentlyupset by the election of five mdc-pendent aldermen, all candidatesseeking the post of acting mayor, spoke to the necessity of buildingbridges.

"I have been very disturbed thatthis council hasn't come togethercompletely since the last election,"said AId. Dawn Disher (5th). "1threw my hat to Mike [MaRousibecause I thought he could bring thecouncil together."

MâRous selected as Park Ridge Acting MayorDiPietro (2nd), and Larry Friel (7th)sought the position. The first to dropout was Friel, after garnering onlytwo votes.

After the second vote, none of theremaining three candidates hadachieved a majority. As a result,AId. Howard Frimark (4th) wasnominated. However, he failed togarner the necessary votes, andwithdrew after two votes had beentaken. AId. Jeff Coz (7th) then nom-mated MaRous. The fifth ballotresulted in a dead heat 7-7 vote, after Tinsglia removed his namefrom consideration, throwing hissupport behind MaRous.

Several council members voicedconcern about MaRous' involve-ment with O'Hare Airport and twoprevious votes in which he had beenforced to recuse himself. AfterMaRous was elected, Aid. SueBeaumont (4th) refused to join thecouncil in a resolution that wouldunanimously proclaim Maltons act-ing mayor.

"1 have received calls from sever-al constituents worried that[MaRous] is a 'lame duck' alder-man," said Beaumont.

MaRous himself, said he wouldnot seek re-election to the post afterthe 1 9 months were up. "I feel that Iwould come in and be fairly aggres-sive," he said, "but serve only thisterm."

Council members were happywith the selection, and eager tomove the meeting along to its con-elusion, because many of themwanted to go home to watch theChicago Cubs/Florida Marlins play-off match on television. Throughoutmuch of the mayoral selectionprocesa, the council, and the publicin attendance, received regularupdates on the score.

MIKE SANTORO

Expecting

to place highly inconference means thatevery conference win is

crucial for the Maine East GirlsVolleyball team. After easily tak-ing the first game from theDeerfield Warriors, the MaineEast Demons had to fight hard inthe second game to win thematch 25-14, 26-24.

Head coach Anne Bezek cred-lied the win to shùtting down theother team's offensive opportu-nitiea and taking some quickscores on the serve. "Ourstrength is defense and servingand it really showed tonight. I'mvery pleased with how we'vebeen playing. We're playingsome outstanding volleyball."

The first game ended quickly, but Deerfield stepped it up anotch in the second game givingMaine East a much tougher time.Neitherteam had a clear advan-tage throughout the game untilmidway through when MaineEast Junior Sonia Dabizlijevicleapt up and slammed down aDeerfield hit. Dabizlijevic would

finish the game with 4 kills, 5digs, and 4 solo blocks.

The block tied the score at I 4-1 4 and after Dabizlijevic servedup two straight pointa themomentum was markedly infavor of the Demons. Not want-ing to let the game slip away,Deerfield wisely called a timeoutallowing the Warriors toregroup. Deerfield pushed thegame to the limit, but in the endMaine East would triumph tak-ing the game 26-24 and winningthe match. "They [Deerfield]really seemed to pick their gameup a bit and challenge us but westayed strong. We did an out-standing job of working as ateam, coming together, andkeeping our cool at the end ofthat second match."

Maine East's next big match istonight Oct 9th at home againstthe Niles North Vikings. ThoughMaine East has already defeatedthe Vikings twice, Bezek looksforward to an exciting matchsaying, "The third time is alwaysan interesting match. You beat ateam twice, they come out gun-fling for you."

Broken WindowpaneQ: i have old wood-frame windows in my house, and a couple of panes are cracked (one is missing apiece of the glass). Can I replace the broken glasswithout having to replace the entire window? -Carly M., Stoneham, Mass.

A: Yes you can, although replacing glass isSot much fun. Then again, replacing an entire window is not much fun, costs more and takes longer, so your decision is probably best. Collect thefollowing items first: work gloves, a hammer, an awl or screwdriver, measuring tape, a wire brush, steel wool, sandpaper, clear silicone putty(or glazier's compound), linseed oil and glazier's points.Remove the window and lay it on a sturdy table (ideally, covered with adropcloth). Pst on the work gloves to protect your hands and carefullyremove the broken glass, using the hammer to gently tap pieces out (ifnecessary) and as awl or screwdriver to pry out remaining fragments.Discard tite glass shards.Scrape the old putty off of the frame, being careful not to damage thewood. If the putty is too hard to scrape, apply linseed oil with a cloth orpaper towel and let it soak in until tite putty softens. Scour the remainingtraces of putty away with the wire brush, steel wool and sandpaper, andthen apply a light coat oflinseed oil to the newly exposed wood. (This willcondition and protect the wood prior to repainting.)

Measure the frame, subtracting 1/16 to 1/8 inch from each side. Thisgap will allow the new pane of glass to expand and contract in shiftingtemperatures. Order the new pane of glass al the home improvement orwitsdow retailer. (I f custom glass cannot be obtained the same day, coverthe l'rame with a piece of plastic lo keep weather and bugs out and put itback itt place.)

With the new glass pane nearby, put a quarter-sized dollop of siliconeputty (or glazier's compound) in your hand and roll Il into a long stringabout the width of a pencil. Repeat this for each side of the frame andpress the silicone string into the edges (use the edge of a screwdriver totap it in if necessary).

Carefully insert the new pane ofglass, pressing it Into the putty. Don'tworry about putty that squeezes up out of the frame just yet. Hold the

glass in place with one hand and place glazier's points paetway into thewood between the glass and frame, one every 8 inches (all on one side ofthe glass, the side facing indoors).Secure the pane by applying a line of clear silicone putty along the out-door side ofthe glass where it meets the frame, and then smooth it with aputty knife (or your finger) so that it matches the putty in the other frames.Use a wet cloth to clean excess putty from the glass, put the window backin place, and allow the putty to dry for at least four days before repaintingexposed wood.(e) 2003 King Features Synd., Inc.
