GRAIGNAMANAGH YOUTH CAFÉ – VOLUNTEER LEADERS URGENTLY REQUIREDVolunteer Adult Leaders (aged 18+) urgently required to help with running of Youth Café. No experience necessary. For anyone willing to help out, Child Safety Training will take place on Wednesday November 30th from 7pm to 10pm in Ossory Youth, Desart Hall, Kilkenny. Garda Vetting is mandatory for prospective Leaders - forms available from the Youth Cafe or on the night of training.

The Youth Cafe is a fantastic amenity for the youth of the town, especially in the winter months but because of lack of volunteers it is completely under-utilised. All that's being asked of a Leader is 2 hours of your time every other week. So please spread the word & let's keep the Youth Cafe going!

GRAIGUENAMANAGH TIDY TOWNS Although this year Graiguenamanagh did not enter the national Tidy Towns competition it is clear that great progress has been made. We managed to deliver on our promise to provide twenty-five planter/urns. They looked well all summer long. They are a permanent addition to the street architecture and as such they are a worthwhile investment for the town. They were purchased solely with money raised through our Five-Week-Draw, the amenity grant to GTT from Kilkenny County Council and generous sponsorship from Graiguenamanagh Golf Society. To extend the season the planter/urns have been planted up with bulbs to provide a splash of colour for coming spring. Also to celebrate 1916 we succeeded in portraying the national flag of green, white and orange, in both roundabouts of the town. Similarly they looked well all summer long.

To continue this progress and subject to funding, GTT proposes to improve the Quay area. The Quay is one of the key focal areas of the town, which at present, for a variety of reasons, does not live up to its potential. We will locate five planter/urns on the quay. Similarly planted they will provide continuity with the Main Street area. There are four cast lamp standards on the Quay. The proposal is, with the assistance of the towns schools, to design banners to be erected near the top of the lamp standards. We will source and erect four large wrap around flower baskets high up on the lamp standards. When appropriately planted this key area of town should be significantly improved. This represents a considerable effort and investment on behalf of a voluntary group to improve this area for the benefit of the entire town.

Another project in hand is to enhance the Grotto in High Street. The Grotto represents a beautiful feature in this area of town but needs to be highlighted more. The statue itself should be illuminated at night. The retaining wall is unstable in parts and can be lowered so that the green area of grass is visible from the outside. A low beech hedge to be planted to the back of the Grotto. Two small trees planted to the sides and a planter/urn planted with colourful flowers directly in front of the statue will greatly enhance the entire area.

Going forward we will call our AGM. Hopefully, this year, there will be engagement by all concerned to improve the town for ourselves as residents and to exploit its tourist potential so that all businesses in the area can thrive.
