New Zealand’s favourite collaborative group, Fly My Pretties will perform live in Picton as part of the Tuia 250 commemorations in November this year.

This year New Zealand marks 250 years since the rst meetings between Māori and Pākehā during James Cook and the Endeavour’s 1769 voyage to Aotearoa New Zealand. Tuia 250 will acknowledge this pivotal moment in our nation’s history as well as the extraordinary feats of Pacic voyagers who reached and settled in Aotearoa many years earlier. Central to the national commemorations is a dual heritage otilla of waka hourua and tall ships, which will visit key sites around the north island; spending ve days in Tōtaranui and Picton from November 21 to November 25.

Tōtaranui 250 Trust General Manager, Chrissy Powlesland says inviting Fly My Pretties to be part of our local commemorations was a deliberate decision.

“It’s precisely because of the band’s cultural diversity and willingness to speak out on national issues, that we wanted to invite the musicians to perform. We want to hold an event that encourages debate about the past, shines a light on the tangata whenua stories of our dual history, and provides an opportunity for real conversations about that journey,” Miss Powlesland says.

Fly My Pretties is an ever changing collective, oering a collaborative musical and visual show featuring fresh and established contemporary musicians and artists.

Cast member Ria Hall says: “Fly My Pretties has always been about celebrating diversity through music, so it’s tting to be performing at an event which commemorates our unique tales of arrival. It’s also timely to address, acknowledge and learn our own history, to put our nation in good stead in the present through a lens of under-standing. The good, the bad and the ugly.”

The Tuia 250 events commence on Thursday 21 November with a Pōwhiri led by tangata whenua at Meretoto/Ship Cove. The commemorative vessels including the HMB Endeavour replica from Australian Maritime Museum in Sydney and the a’afaite i te Ao Mā’ohi, a va’a moana from Pape'ete, Tahiti, will then sail through Tōtaranui to arrive in Waitohi/Picton on Friday 22 November. Throughout the weekend the vessels will be open to the public to hop onboard and have a look around.

Saturday 23 November will see the stage utilised throughout the day to showcase cultural tikanga, with performances from members of our community, including groups representing Māori and Polynesia. Early evening contemporary musicians will perform as support for Fly My Pretties.

For further information about Tuia 250 and the programme of commemorative events visit www.totaranui250.co.nz

Picton School: Fortnightly round upBy Dave Sullivan (Principal)

Fern the Falcon Fern the Falcon visited Picton School last week with members of the Blenheim Falcon Trust. The students were fascinated to spend time with such a beautiful and special NZ animal.

“It was the closet I have ever been to a real bird” Kalib.

The students have been studying NZ native animals as part of the Tui 250 study.

Mr Sullivan caught up with four of the senior students who had completed very high quality information brochures. “I was amazed how much the students had learnt about falcons”. Some of the students were lucky enough to feed the falcon.

Waitohi Cross CountryOn Tuesday, we travelled out to the domain to enjoy the Waitohi Cross Country. We were blessed with good weather and not too much mud. The students really enjoy getting out and participating with other schools in authentic environments.

The students participated in the challenging course with a great resilience and engagement. Before the race, many of the students had butteries, but all reported enjoying the challenge afterwards. Both schools shared the placings and the fun.

A big thank you goes out to the Waikawa Bay School who organised a great event and Endeavor Park Pavilion for the use of their excellent facilities.

Bottom right: Shayden from Picton School, neck and neck on the nish line with Liam from Waikawa Bay School.

Paige, Kalib, Troy and Malachi share their work and thoughts with me.

I learnt that:•

The NZ falcon was critically endangered with only 180 aliveThe way we can support the bird is to provide more suitable habitatReduce the number of predators, especially as the falcon nested on the groundCover electrical wires, as the bird’s wingspan can bridge across the wires and the birds can be electrocuted

Council plants illegally taken from Picton entrance Two dozen plants put in by Council in the last 18 months have been illegally taken from a section of road on State Highway 1, near the southern entrance to Picton.

The established plants that were recently removed include red and brown Wharaiki/Cookianum ax.

Council’s Reserves and Amenities Manager, Jane Tito, says the ax was specically planted in that area to help beautify the entrance to Picton and reduce ongoing maintenance costs.

“It’s a real shame that someone has decided to illegally remove the ax for their own benet, just as the plants were reaching maturity,” she said.

While this matter has been referred to the Police, Council encourages anyone who sees this sort of activity to contact Council as soon as possible on Ph: 03 520 7400.

SuperGold cardholders ride free on Picton serviceThe new Picton to Blenheim bus service began this week and SuperGold cardholders are reminded that they can ride the bus for free.

The 18 month trial service operates during o-peak hours, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These hours are in keeping with the o-peak hours oered on transport services around the country where SuperGold cardholders qualify for free travel.

The service starts and nishes in Waikawa. Between Picton and Blenheim there are three designated stops, o the main highway at Tuamarina, Spring Creek and Grovetown.

There are also three designated stops in Blenhiem at the Railway Station, Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 and outside Countdown on Seymour Street.

Within Picton and Waikawa the bus operates as a hail and ride service, meaning passengers need to wave the bus down as it travels along the designated route.

Maps and timetables showing all of the stops and times of the new service are now available (see over the page).

Hard copies are also available from Council reception and the Picton Library and Service Centre.

Picton Football ClubBy Donna Sio

Saturday 27th July

Picton Pumas had an exciting game against Renwick Wolfpack which could have gone either way. Unfortunately Renwick scored a second goal 10 mins before the end of the game resulting in a 2-1 loss to us. Player of the Day went to Luc Sherwood for great play in goal.

Picton Women had a bye.

Saturday 3rd August

Picton Pumas played 2 games on Saturday. Their rst game resulted in a 6-0 win against Redwood Bobcats and their second game resulted in a 2-0 win against Rangers Revolution. Player of the Day went to River Hopkins for great defensive play in both games.

It was a chilly early start for the round robin, Picton Wildcats rst game was against Renwick Wolfpack, the Wolfpack were rst to score but a determined eort from the Wildcats got the equaliser. The Wolfpack got a dubious penalty in the second half and took it well, with the Wildcats now a little demoralised, the Wolfpack capitalised and put another away. The Wildcats were energised into action and battled hard to close the gap, but it was not to be. Final score 3-1 to the Wolfpack.

The second game of the morning was against Redwood Bobcats, the Wildcats put in a more cohesive eort with some good link up play and good passing to ensure the win. The Bobcats were determined and battled hard but they could not break through. Final score 4-0 to the Wildcats. Player of the Day went to Mana Collins for all round eort.

Picton Women drew another bye so had a fun kick around to keep the body moving.

We are about to wrap the football season up on the 24th August, so get along and support the last few games of the season.

Another member of the Picton Golf Club has scored their rst hole in one. Aaron Wilson scored his rst ever one score on the number 4, par 3 at the Picton Golf Course on Thursday 1st August. He took a photo of his slam dunk, no bounce at all. 138 meters from tee to cup.

This is probably a rst for the Picton Club as his aunty (Maria McConway) also scored her rst hole in one at the Picton Golf Course earlier this year. Perhaps a New Zealand rst that a nephew and his aunt both score their rst hole in one on the same course in the same year. Congratulations Aaron.
