Eilish to perform Bond ballad at British pop music's big night

LONDON, United Kingdom | AFP | - Teen sensation Billie Eilish is set to premiere her new James Bond theme tune at the Brit Awards on Tuesday, while rappers Stormzy and Dave and indie newcomer Lewis Capaldi will vie for glory at British pop's biggest night.

But the build-up to the show has been overshadowed by criticism of the lack of female nominees in mixed gender categories, with just four women honored in 25 spots.

The disproportionately male shortlists, unveiled last month before the ceremony at London's O2 Arena, were branded an "absolute disgrace" by one music critic.

It comes despite the Brits' voting academy undergoing a major overhaul in 2017 to make it more gender balanced and diverse, with hundreds of new members joining the nominating pool.

Veteran rocker Rod Stewart is set to close the ceremony, which recognizes

the country's top pop talent in 2019, while Stormzy and Harry Styles are among the male-heavy lineup due to perform.

But Eilish could steal the show on women's behalf.

Nominated for best international female solo artist, she is set to perform the world premiere of the new James Bond theme tune, which shares the same name as the upcoming movie "No Time To Die".

The teenage pop iconoclast unveiled the ballad -- which features the grungy melancholic feel that has propelled her to star status -- to critical acclaim last week.

It has already racked up nearly 26 million views on her YouTube channel, capping a remarkable few weeks for the 18-year-old singer who is the youngest artist to record a Bond track.

The breakout star swept last month's Grammys, clinching five awards including the "big four" prizes:

Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist.'Absolute disgrace'

The Brit Awards have recognized the cream of British pop music since they were first held in 1977, and have often been peppered with scandal and farce.

This year sees grime star Stormzy, who headlined last year's Glastonbury Festival, London rapper Dave and Scottish singer Capaldi each shortlisted for the same three prestigious prizes.

The British trio will battle it out for the coveted best album award -- alongside Styles and Michael Kiwanuka -- as well as for male solo artist and song of the year.

Capaldi and Dave will also go head-to-head for new artist of the year, with singer Mabel -- daughter of Swedish star Neneh Cherry -- rapper Aitch and singer-songwriter Sam Fender the other contenders.

Glasgow-born Capaldi is riding high after his debut

album, "Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent," became Britain's best-selling album of 2019.

Meanwhile Dave, 21, broke through last year with his album "Psychodrama", which also topped the country's album chart.

Other eye-catching match-ups include best international male, which pits Bruce Springsteen against

Nigerian singer Burna Boy.But the ceremony

threatens to be remembered for gender diversity row.

Alongside Mabel, who is up for song of the year as well as best new artist, only US singer and dancer Normani and compatriot Miley Cyrus were nominated for awards open to both male and female artists.

The latter two were only for vocal collaborations on songs by male artists Sam Smith and Mark Ronson, respectively.

GMA News pillar and multi-awarded news anchor and radio host Mike Enriquez marks his 25th year as a loyal Kapuso by renewing his contract with GMA Network on Thursday, February 6.

Present during the contract signing were GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit Jr., Executive Vice President and CFO Felipe S. Yalong, and Senior Vice President for News and Public Affairs Marissa L. Flores. Also in attendance were Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Communications Angela Javier Cruz and Assistant Vice President for Corporate Communications Jojo Aquio.

A certified Kapuso through and through, Enriquez, who also serves as RGMA President, has been with the leading broadcast company since 1995. He only has kind words to say about the

Network that has been his home for more than two decades.

At present, Enriquez co-anchors GMA’s flagship primetime news program 24 Oras and hosts the investigative public affairs program Imbestigador. He is also seen daily on GMA News TV’s Dobol B Sa News TV. On radio, he banners Super Radyo DZBB’s Saksi sa Dobol B and Super Balita sa Umaga Nationwide.

GMA Network, through its top management, expressed its gratitude and appreciation

to Enriquez’ continued loyalty to his home network and his work, citing his unparalleled competence throughout the years.

“Si Mike Enriquez ay talagang matagal na dito sa GMA. In fact, ang loyalty niya at ang loyalty ng GMA sa kanya are unquestionable. Hindi lamang iyon, Mike is already an institution at siya ay isa sa mga pinakadisenteng journalist at anchor na nakilala ko dito sa broadcasting [industry],” Gozon shared.

Likewise, Duavit empha-sized Enriquez’ contribution to the Network. “We do not see life without Mike and we are grateful and happy that he sees it the same way.
