CURRICULUM MATTERS
ENGLISH
The English Language curriculum aims to enable our pupils to:
1. develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviour for the language.
2. become effective and empathetic communicators
3. Build confidence and foster interest in the language.
We hope that our Primary 3 pupils will learn EL through various strategies and programmes.
Strategies and Programmes @ Jiemin1. Puppetry (ALP)In this programme, the pupils will get to learn some elements of puppetry such as puppet manipulation, characterization and handling and put them to use in class presentations.
2. P.O.E.M.Pupils will receive specific feedback for each
piece of their Composition writing so that they can improve their drafts or second writing.
3. T.R.E.E.S.We adopt a structured approach in teaching
pupils in the area for Oral so that they can build on their ideas for the theme or topic during EL lessons
Parents can support their child learning by
1. Providing a positive environment. Always acknowledge your child’s effort.
2. Monitoring homework.
3. Taking them to visits on the libraries and
4. Encouraging them to read widely.
MATHEMATICS
The mathematics curriculum aims to enable our pupils to:
1. Acquire mathematical concepts and skills for everyday use and continuous learning in mathematics;
2. Develop thinking, reasoning, communication, application and metacognitive skills through a mathematical approach to problem-solving;
3. Build confidence and foster interest in mathematics.
We hope that our Primary 3 pupils will experience meaningful and effective Math learning through the various programmes.
Mathematics Programmes @ Jiemin1. Learn Math with Comics
Comics is introduced to make learning of mathematical thinking skills enjoyable for the pupils. Interesting short comic stories allow teachers to guide the development of these skills in a fun and interesting manner.
2. Factual FluencyPupils practice factual fluency to develop speed andaccuracy in number facts like multiplication tables of 2 to10. Factual Fluency are carried out through fun card games and online quizzes.
3. Heuristics PackageWe adopt a structured approach in teaching pupils problem solving skills. In Primary 3, pupils are taught to to use models to solve word problems.
4. Fun with Math (during recesses in the concourse)To motivate pupils to master their basic Mathematics facts through interaction with their peers in a fun and non-threatening environment, reducing the fear of failures and errors.
5. Math Games DayProvide a platform for pupils to play competitively against their classmates. Through games, pupils are motivated to participate and develop positive attitudes towards Mathematics.
6. Quick Math @ Home programme
(For selected pupils only)
This programme hopes to partner parents in developing important skills for our pupils at home. The selected pupils need to set aside 10 minutes of their study time at home to memorise the multiplication and division facts of 6 to 9.
A ‘Quick Math’ kit, consists of multiplication and division cards, will be loaned to your child if you agree to participate in this programme.

1. Providing a conducive learning environment. Always acknowledge your child’s effort.
2. Monitoring your child’s homework. Ask questions that guide without telling the answers.
3. Encouraging your child to do his/her corrections independently. Advise your child to ask his/her teacher if he/she needs help.
4. Playing mathematical games / quizzes that reinforce memorisation of multiplication and division facts.
SCIENCE
The Science curriculum aims to :
1. Provide pupils with experiences which build their interests and stimulate their curiosity about their environment;
2. Provide pupils with basic scientific terms and concepts to help them understand themselves and the world around them;
3. Provide pupils with opportunities to develop skills, habits of mind and attitudes necessary for scientific inquiry;
4. Prepare pupils towards using scientific knowledge and methods in making personal decisions.
We hope that our Primary 3 pupils will experience meaningful and effective Science learning through the various programmes.
Science Programmes @ Jiemin1. Inquiry-Based Learning (Trails/Experiments)
Trails to our Eco-Garden or Mini-Forest will allow our pupils access to the Diversity of Living Things in JieminPrimary School. The hands-on experiments using apparatus from the Science Lab will allow pupils to be engaged in meaningful exploration in order to make deductions on key Science concepts.
2. Performance Task
Pupils put into practice the skills they have picked up using lab apparatus to test out which of the hidden objects given are magnets. They need to have full understanding of the concepts taught in order to apply.
3. Learning Journey
Pupils will visit Kok Fah Technology Firm. They will find out more about the use of different parts of plants, how science and technology can counter the challenges we face in land-scarce Singapore and increase efficiency in farming processes.
4. Fun with Science (during recesses @ Science Corner)Pupils can have fun exploring the Science Kits while figuring out the Science concepts behind each kit. They can interact with their peers in a fun and non-threatening environment, reducing the fear of failures.
5. Magic of Science Under the guidance and facilitation of our Science teachers, selected pupils will be provided a platform to showcase experiments to their schoolmates. It is truly experiments designed by pupils for pupils!
6. Problem Based Learning
As a pre-event to our Magic of Science, problem based
learning are mini case studies designed for pupils to apply the Science concepts learnt in class to solve problems in everyday life. It is application in real-life contexts, in authentic settings. The quiz is open to all pupils and they are strongly encouraged to participate.
