Learn for Life
“Let us prepare every child for the test of life,
and not just a life of tests”
PM Lee, National Day Rally 2012
Changes at a Glance
Changes at a Glance
Changes at a Glance
• Have more time and space to deepen their learning,
especially in the transition years (i.e. P3, P5, S1 and S3).
• Better enjoy the process of learning and develop dispositions
for lifelong learning.
Changes aim to help our students:
Preparing our students for life: Our School Values (ENRICH)
Esprit De CorpsNever-Give-UpResponsibilityIntegrityCareHumility
Learn for Life as an important value, attitude and skill
Addressing Parents’ and
Stakeholders’ Concerns
Which assessments would be counted? How are the various assessments weighted?
There will still be assessments throughout the year (e.g. reviews,
performance tasks) to support students’ learning, gauge their progress,
and address learning gaps. Not all assessments will be weighted.

Changes to the Report Book
What will the new report book look like?
Will my child be ready for national examinations?
Even with the removal
of mid-year examinations for some levels,
the number of examinations
to assess learning is still adequate.
Subject-Based Banding (SBB)
WHAT IS SUBJECT-BASED BANDING (PRI)?
Provides greater flexibility for your child by offering him the
option of a combination of standard and foundation subjects,
depending on his strengths.Example:
If your child excels in English and Mother Tongue but needs
more support in Mathematics and Science, he may choose to
take the first two subjects at the standard level and the others
at the foundation level.
Such a choice will allow your child to focus on and stretch his
potential in the subjects that he is strong in while building up
the fundamentals in the subjects that he needs more support
in.
WHAT ARE SOME CHOICES AVAILABLE?If your child (for P4
exam)Your child may be recommended to take
Passes all 4 subjects and
performs very well in
Mother Tongue Language
4 standard subjects + Higher Mother Tongue
Language
Passes all 4 subjects 4 standard subjects
Passes 3 subjects 4 standard subjects
Passes 2 subjects
or less
4 standard subjects;
3 standard subjects + 1 foundation subject;
2 standard subjects + 2 foundation subjects;
1 standard subject + 3 foundation subjects;
4 foundation subjects
SUBJECT-BASED BANDING (PRI) AND SECONDARY
SCHOOL ADMISSION: HOW ARE THEY RELATED?
• PSLE score calculation – takes into account the different
expectations of standard and foundation subjects
• Opportunity to pursue higher-level options at secondary school for
students who excel in their subjects. (SBB in secondary schools)
• No disadvantage in taking foundation subjects - enables your child to
focus on building up strong fundamentals in these subjects and
better prepares him for secondary school.

For example:
• Resilience
• Integrity
• Care

For example:
• Global awareness
• Critical and Inventive

• Communication and

STRONG FOUNDATION
For example:
• Literacy
• Numeracy
• Social-emotional
Competencies
WHAT DO OUR CHILDREN NEED TO THRIVE IN THE FUTURE?
THE PSLE REMAINS A
USEFUL CHECKPOINT
It gauges the level of students’
learning in the core subjects at the
end of six years of primary school
and guides his future choices.
HOW PSLE SCORING WORKS
THE T-SCORE AGGREGATE
DETERMINES S1 POSTING
• It shows how well
a student has done compared
to his cohort
• The T-score Aggregate largely
determines which secondary
school a student is posted to
• A student with ‘better’ letter
grades may have a lower T-
score Aggregate than a student
with ‘poorer’ letter grades

CURRENT SYSTEM
CURRENT SYSTEM
HOW THE T-SCORE AGGREGATE
AFFECTS STUDENTS
• It finely differentiates students
• It shows how well students
have done relative to their peers
WHY CHANGE?
• Reduce fine differentiation of students at a
young age based on exam scores
• Recognise a student’s level of achievement
in each subject, regardless of how his peers
have done
WHAT THE NEW PSLE SCORING SYSTEM
AIMS TO DO
NEW SYSTEM
• There will be 8 Achievement Levels
(ALs)
• A student’s AL for each subject will
reflect his level of achievement, rather
than how he has performed relative to
his peers
• Students can then be matched to
suitable academic programmes in
secondary schools
STUDENTS WITH SIMILAR SCORES
IN EACH SUBJECT WILL BE GROUPED
INTO THE SAME ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL

2 85 – 89

4 75 – 79
5 65 – 74
6 45 – 64
7 20 – 44

NEW SYSTEM
• The PSLE Score replaces the
T-score Aggregate
• The PSLE Score ranges from
4 to 32, with 4 being the best
• Compared to the T-score
Aggregate, students are less
finely differentiated

IN SUMMARY
WHAT REMAINS WHAT CHANGES
• The T-score Aggregate will be replaced
by the PSLE Score, to reduce the fine differentiation
of our students at a young age based on exam
scores
• A student’s AL for each subject will reflect his own
achievement, rather than how he has performed
relative to his peers
• Same 4 subjects are
tested, and scores are
awarded to guide
students’ choices for the
next stage of their
education journey
• Subject curriculum will
be continually updated.
This is not related to the
PSLE scoring and S1
posting changes
Guiding Principles in Partnering Parents
1. Students succeed when schools and parents work hand in hand to support students in learning self-management skills, taking responsibility and building resilience.
2. Mutual respect and trust form the strong foundation for positive engagement between schools and parents.
Areas where your support counts
Student well-being & Holistic Development
1. Knowing the child
2. Developing the child: • Learning
independently
• Managing self
• Relating to others
Communication between teachers & parents
1. Keeping in touch
2. Managing incidents
Developing your child: Managing selfDos
1. Encourage your child to take personal responsibility e.g. doing homework, packing school bag, taking initiative to seek help, managing his/her time, practising responsible online behaviour, helping out in household chores & responsibilities etc.
2. Encourage your child to be resilient & learn from the consequences when he/she is unable to complete homework or forgot to bring items to school. Guide your child in managing disappointments.
3. Put in place appropriate home strategies for routines e.g. homework, play, bed time.
Don’ts
1. Don’t deliver your child’s forgotten items to school unless it is a medical emergency.
2. Don’t contact the teacher to check on things that your child needs to do.
Support from Parents
• Support and partnership of parents are crucial in realising these changes.
• Parents can play a part to encourage Joy of Learning, and Learn for Life.
Encourage Joy of Learning!
Encourage Joy of Learning by
• not over-emphasising academic performance
• focus on your child’s learning journey, rather than compare them to others
Give our children the time & space to deepen learning
