There is so much happening at Nine this fall. Ken Burns is back with Country Music. Poldark and The Durrells in Corfu begin their final seasons. And our terrific work to strengthen the St. Louis region continues.

Our programming is even more convenient to watch with the PBS app, where you can binge-watch entire seasons of some dramas and enjoy extended plays with Nine Passport.

As public media, we possess a unique set of assets, expertise and connections that, when aligned and deployed with intention, strengthens the work of our partners, and in turn, our community. Nine has been recog-nized as a national leader of this community engagement model, which enables more informed perspectives on solutions to chal-lenges and more support for organizations that are working to address these challenges.

Our annual Community of Supporters list appears in this issue. Our work would not be possible without the support of you and everyone on this list. No matter the level of support, your support enables us to realize our mission of igniting the spirit of possibil-ity in St. Louis as a trusted convener and a creator and distributor of trusted content.

Our Sparkle and Twang-themed Pioneer Spirit Gala and 65th Birthday Concert are around the corner, right in the middle of Ken Burns’ eight-part special on the history of country music.

Proceeds from the weekend celebration sup-port Nine’s mission to strengthen civic life in our region.

Sponsorships, full tables, and individual tick-ets are still available for the September 21 gala at nineNet.org/gala. I hope to see you there! Five-time Grammy winner Marty Stuart will be our special guest.

The next day, September 22, Stuart will per-form at our 65th birthday concert at The Shel-don. Show your support for Nine by purchas-ing tickets at nineNet.org/birthdayconcert.

I know you’ll enjoy all that’s happening at Nine this fall. Thank you for making it possible.

Unforgettable Stories of Hardship and Joy

THE EIGHT-PART HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARY 'COUNTRY MUSIC' IS AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY ACROSS TIME, ONE SONG AT A TIME

“At the heart of every great country music song is a story,” says documentarian Ken Burns. “As the songwriter Harlan Howard said, ‘It’s three chords and the truth.’ The common experiences and hu-man emotions speak to each of us about love and loss, about hard times and the chance of redemp-tion. As an art form, country music is also forever revisiting its history, sharing and updating old clas-sics and celebrating its roots, which are in many ways foundational to our country itself.”

“We discovered that country music isn’t—and never was—one type of music; it actually is many styles,” says Dayton Duncan, writer and producer. “It sprang from diverse roots, and it sprouted many branches. What unites them all is the way the mu-sic connects personal stories and elemental experi-ences with universal themes that every person can relate to. And as it evolved, from the bottom up, it created a special bond between the artists and fans that is unique among all other musical genres.”

Country Music digs deep to uncover the roots of the music, including ballads, minstrel mu-sic, hymns and the blues, and its early years in the 1920s when it was called “hillbilly music” and was recorded for the first time and played across the airwaves on radio stations. It ex-plores how Hollywood movies instituted the fad of singing cowboys, like Gene Autry, and shows how the rise of juke joints after World War II changed the musical style by bringing electric and pedal steel guitars to the forefront.

“As with so many of their films, Ken and Dayton guide us on a journey through history that educates and entertains, providing an intimate look into the creative lives of those women and men who came together to develop an authentic American art form.”

—Perry Simon PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager,

General Audience Programming

The film witnesses the rise of bluegrass music with Bill Monroe and reveals how one of country music’s offspring—rockabilly—evolved into rock and roll in Memphis. The documentary focuses on the constant tug of war between the desire to make country music as mainstream as pos-sible and the periodic reflexes to bring it back to its roots. As Burns and Duncan weave together the musi-cal stories, they connect the history of country music to the larger story of America, looking at how artists and songwriting reflected periods of depression, war and cultural upheaval and how radio and, later, television impacted the art form. The series also tells the story of how Nashville came to be not only the epicenter of the country music industry, but Music City USA. At the film’s heart are the stories of unforget-table songs and the artists who created them: their emergence from humble beginnings, their musical influences and their breakthrough moments. The film explores the extraordinary connection between country music artists and

fans and notes the enduring influence of par-ticular songs and musicians across generations. The narrative ends in the mid-1990s as a young Garth Brooks emerges from a small venue in Nashville to achieve phenomenal success, brings country music to an entirely new level of popularity, and yet shows up to sign autographs for more than 20 hours at the Country Music Association’s Fan Fair. Collaborators Burns, Duncan, and producer Julie Dunfey spent eight years researching and producing the film, conducting interviews with more than 100 people, including 40 members of the Country Music Hall of Fame (17 of those interviewed have since passed on). Among those storytellers are historian Bill Malone and a wide range of country artists such as Marty Stuart, Rosanne Cash, Vince Gill, Reba McEn-tire, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristof-ferson, and Naomi and Wynonna Judd, as well as studio musicians, record producers and others. The film uses more than 3,200 photo-graphs and more than two hours of archival footage, including rare and never-before-seen photos and footage of Jimmie Rodgers, John-ny Cash and others.

new on nineRetro Report NEW SERIES LOOKS AT TOP NEWS STORIES THROUGH THE LENS OF THEIR OFTEN SURPRISING HISTORICAL ROOTS

Retro Report is a new weekly one-hour-magazine format program hosted by journalist Celeste Headlee and artist Masud Olufani and featuring New Yorker humorist Andy Borowitz.

Presented by Georgia Public Broadcasting and produced by Retro Report, the series offers viewers a fresh perspective on current headlines, revealing their unknown—and often surprising—connections to the past. Retro Report on PBS premieres October 7 at 8:00 p.m. on Nine PBS.

In today’s 24-hour news cycle, with breaking headlines and all-news networks and online outlets constantly competing for attention, Retro Report on PBS aims to widen the discussion, revealing the story behind the story, in order to gain new

insights and shed perspective on events that are still resonant today. Each episode will explore four distinct stories, together with a special weekly segment featuring the wit and wisdom of author and comedian Andy Borowitz.

Topics to be explored include how Colin Kaepernick’s bended knee during the national anthem was deeply rooted in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City protest, why the government spends nearly $50 million a year to care for approximately 100,000 wild horses thanks to an obscure law passed more than 50 years ago, how the modern-day recycling movement was fueled by a news story about a barge full of garbage in the 1980s and the tragic story behind why modern U.S. drug-approval laws are so strict.

Above: At the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Beverly Hills, CA, on July 30, (from left) executive producer Kyra Darnton, hosts Masud Olufani and Celeste Headlee, and contributor Andy Borowitz discuss the new PBS series that goes beyond the headlines to understand the present by revealing the past.

Volunteer Profile You probably have never seen the two 15-year-old volunteers pictured below, but for the past three seasons of Storytime in the Commons, twins Cameron and Jacob Jehling have had big shoes to fill. Luna the Moon, Arthur, Jet Propulsion, Nature Cat Fred, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Buddy the Dinosaur are just some of the character costumes they have inhabited—to the delight of little readers at Nine and at a recent visit to St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Cameron says mimicking the characters’ physicality “brings out the actor in me.” Cameron was the Beast in a recent middle-school production of "Beauty and the Beast," while Jacob was the stage manager for "Shrek." Their mom, Christie, a long-time Nine volunteer, acts as the costume handler.

Cameron and Jacob both appreciate how the characters can bring the TV screen to life and make kids smile and feel special. “It’s hard not to smile behind the mask,” says Jacob.

Voces: The Pushouts Explore an inspiring story about the resilience of young people and how the support of caring adults offers hope. The program is part of American Graduate, public media’s long-term initiative to help young people succeed in school, career and life. The Pushouts features footage shot during the course of 25 years, including a year in the life of Victor Rios, who by age 15 was a high school dropout and gang member with three felony convictions. After his best friend’s murder, a teacher’s quiet persistence and a mentor’s moral conviction enable him to turn his life around.
