Imagination Interests Intelligence

At Allens, you will find yourself working alongside colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Although our teams are made up of people with countless individual dif ferences and life experiences, common to each of them is the ability to distil simplicity from complexity and to provide clear solutions to our clients. We want people who want to excel and to fulfil their potential. The three key things we look for are:

• Imagination: we are a firm of multi-dimensional individuals and teams. We celebrate diverse perspectives and aim to attract individuals who will add to the unique fabric of our firm.

• Interests: imaginative people often have varied interests outside of the law and exciting opportunities available to them. Our policies support employees who seek high-quality work, along with time for outside interests.

• Intelligence: we value excellence in all that we do. We want people who strive to do their best. We look to recruit people who are not only technically excellent, but also capable of building strong relationships with colleagues and clients to deliver a commercial and solution-driven approach. We look for people who are innovative and creative, and will thrive in our environment.

Allens Arthur Robinson is a major legal force in Asia, with lawyers and business services employees working in Beijing, Brisbane, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Melbourne, Perth, Port Moresby, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney and Ulaanbaatar. Seventy-seven of Australia’s and 55 of the world’s top 100 companies choose Allens Arthur Robinson as their legal adviser.

On 1 March Blake Dawson and Ashurst combined our practices in Asia and Blake Dawson changed its name to Ashurst Australia and adopted the Ashurst brand. This marked the coming together of two equals. Together we form a powerful global presence as one team, with one brand, and a shared vision. This paves the way for a planned full global merger of the two firms in 2014.

The collaboration brings an expanded presence in 16 of the world’s leading financial centres. It provides our junior lawyers with the training to develop a deep understanding of local market knowledge, with the benefit of a global network and international insight. Working in a truly global law firm will give you an opportunity to encounter a wider range of experiences and challenges. To work for global clients and relate cross-culturally with colleagues in other countries. With more than 3,000 people working in 24 offices across Australia, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, UK, the US and an associated office in Indonesia, you can match your career ambitions with the many opportunities at Ashurst.

We are approachable, good listeners and easy to deal with. Ashurst attracts people who contribute to our culture of high performance, honesty, friendliness and teamwork. We realise that success does not come overnight but over time with the support of on-the-job learning, mentoring and continued development programs. Personal coaching, approachable partners, open discussion and the support from each of our practice teams will help you develop from law student to trusted lawyer.

The Aurora Native Title Internship Program places legal, anthropology and some social science students and graduates in unpaid internships at Native Title Representative Bodies (NTRBs) and other organisations working in native title, policy development and social justice with a focus on Indigenous affairs. The program not only provides much needed assistance to host organisations but also promotes career opportunities by raising awareness of the NTRB system and attracts students and graduates to work in the sector. The quality of the students is demonstrated by the eagerness of NTRBs and other hosts to retain alumni of the program on a longer-term basis.

Applications are open to law students who have completed the property component of their legal studies; law graduates; as well as to related social science students and graduates (namely anthropology, archaeology, cultural heritage, environmental management, history, human geography and sociology), who demonstrate a keen interest in native title, policy and Indigenous affairs. Longer term paid locum contract placements are also offered from two months and may continue up to one year.

Applicants for the internship program are required to apply online via the Aurora website. There are two intakes for interns annually for 5-6 week placements during the winter and summer university breaks. Applications for the upcoming winter 2012 round of internships will be open via the Aurora website from 5-30 March 2012.

The Legal Practice Centre at Grif fith University is conveniently located at South Bank.

The Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, Skills and Ethics satisfies the practical training requirement for admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland. We offer the course in full-time on-campus or online modes.

The full-time (on-campus) program focuses on small group teaching in a simulated practice experience. Instructors act as mentors to students in order to build confidence and develop skills. Close supervision by experienced practitioners allows students to gain an understanding of what it takes to succeed in legal practice.

The part-time online (in-practice) program is for graduates already working in a legal environment. This program offers students the flexibility to juggle study, work and other commitments.

The full-time online program is for graduates not already working in a legal environment but who wish to complete the coursework portion of their PLT program before or after undertaking a sixteen week clinical legal placement.

Online materials provide students with direction in relation to common transactions and guidance with respect to ethical and practical concerns arising in legal practice. Online students attend four weekend intensives during this program.

The Graduate Certificate in Legal Practice, Skills and Ethics (in practice) is available to students completing approved traineeships who need to complete their 90 hours of approved training.

Our staff are committed to training young legal practitioners with individualised attention that ensures all students are prepared for the challenges of legal practice.

Graduation - What happens next? /// Legal Careers Expo 2012 41

Graduation – What happens next?

SUPERVISED TRAINEESHIP

Supervised traineeships cover competencies set by the Supreme Court (Legal Practitioner Admission) Amendment Rule (No 2) 2005 for admission.

Traineeships are conducted in the workplace and are structured to ensure that you receive adequate supervision and assessment. It takes approximately 12 months to complete and is a popular method of admission for those seeking future employment in the State’s top tier law firms.

PRACTICAL LEGAL TRAINING

The most popular method of satisfying the admission criteria is undertaking a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice known as Practical Legal Training (PLT). PLT is designed to equip you with practical skills like ethics, legal writing and drafting and interview skill among others, for entry into legal practice.

The following law schools offer PLT:

• AustralianNationalUniversityCollegeofLaw• BondUniversity• Grif fithUniversityLawSchool• QUTFacultyofLaw• TheCollegeofLawQueensland.

All of these law schools are exhibiting at the Legal Careers Expo 2012.

ADMISSION

The Supreme Court of Queensland is responsible for admitting you to the Roll of Lawyers and is assisted by the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board, which issues an applicant’s certificate of compliance.

To be eligible for admission, you must have completed an approved law degree, an approved Practical Legal Training course or supervised traineeship at a firm, and be able to satisfy the Admission Board and the Court of your fitness to practise.

PRACTISING CERTIFICATES

A Practising Certificate is required to practise as a solicitor in Queensland. Certificates are issued by the Queensland Law Society according to Section 52 of the Legal Profession Act 2007 and must be renewed annually. You can apply for full membership and your Practicing Certificate at any time, providing you’re admitted to the Roll of Lawyers by the Supreme Court of Queensland.

Barristers are also required to hold a Practising Certificate, which is issued by the Bar Association of Queensland.

Visit qls.com.au for more information on how to become a practising lawyer.

To practice law in Queensland you’re legally required to be admitted onto the Roll of Lawyers by the Supreme Court of Queensland. Graduates wishing to be admitted must undertake additional legal training through either successful completion of a Practical Legal Training (PLT) course, or by serving as a supervised trainee. Once admitted you will be required to apply for a Practising Certificate from the Society to practice as a solicitor, or the Bar Association of Queensland to practice as a barrister.

Queensland Law Society /// Legal Career – What are your options?42

Solicitor – working in a legal firm

You will provide advice, work closely with individuals and organisations, and liaise with other legal professionals. Much time is spent meeting with clients, researching cases, and writing legal documents. Solicitors therefore need a wide range of skills. As well as being able to communicate with clients and develop good working relationships with them, solicitors need to be able to work closely with colleagues, pay close attention to detail and be willing to work long hours. Other key traits include initiative and good judgement, which will assist in working with complex legal information.

Career path

You will start practice as an ‘employee solicitor’ and move onto ‘associate’ and ‘senior associate’ roles by acquiring extensive experience in your relevant area of law. Partnership may follow after a number of years. This involves greater responsibility and status, increased income, a greater influence in how the firm is run, and the responsibility of training and mentoring of younger solicitors.

You can choose to specialise in a field of law or you may prefer to practise in a broad cross-section of areas. Focusing in one area gives you the option to enhance your career through Queensland Law Society Specialist Accreditation, becoming an accredited specialist is a distinction that firm solicitors can aspire too. For more information on Specialist Accreditation visit qls.com.au/specialistaccreditation.html.

Where you can work

It is not uncommon for graduates to set up their own firms; however most graduates will work in large or medium firms with the aim to specialise. Working in a smaller boutique firm will provide you with a cross-section of practice. Larger firms

are mostly located in Brisbane and South East Queensland while regional areas provide the opportunity to work in more personal and intimate firms.

Solicitor – working as in-house counsel

As an in-house counsel solicitor you’re often an integral part of the management team, and are directly involved in the decision making processes of the organisation. Usually, the in-house legal team takes responsibility of all commercial matters on behalf of the organisation.

Career path

Increasingly, in-house counsels are solicitors with vast experience in the legal profession. Solicitors generally move into corporate counsel after having practised at a private law firm. Corporate positions are considered attractive because they do not have the personal budget pressures that private law firms have. In many instances, these jobs lead to management positions.

Where you can work

Most large corporations with international bases have in-house counsel; many medium sized firms also require the support and advice of a legal team. Organisations in industries like mining, energy, media, telecommunication, transport, construction and engineering are a good place to start looking for in-house counsel positions.

Solicitor – working in government

Countless government departments at federal, state and local level have in-house legal departments. Working in government you’ll be tasked with the responsibility of researching, writing and assisting in the implementation of procedural activities carried out by the departments. The Government policy team may be responsible for constitutional, administrative and regulatory law issues.

Legal Career – What are your options? /// Legal Careers Expo 2012 43

Career path

In some instances it can be said that policy officers for government are not as well-paid as their private practice counterparts. However, Government Policy Officers are not bound by personal budget pressures and therefore they enjoy more flexibility working in their field of interest.

Where you can work

Federal and state government departments like the Department of Justice and Attorney-General, or at local council level in Brisbane or regionally. There are also government regulatory and statutory authorities that have in-house legal departments, for example Q-COMP.

Solicitor – working to improve access to justice

Community legal and pro bono professionals provide less fortunate members of the public with access to the legal justice system. Work in this capacity can offer a rewarding dimension to your career.

As a community legal or pro bono professional you will offer free legal advice, referral and support to people who are experiencing trouble with the law, and are unable to afford the full cost of engaging a solicitor. Legal advice may be sought on issues involving the police, landlords, employers, family and human rights. In addition to free legal advice and support you will also work to increase community understanding of legal rights by providing community groups and individuals with legal education and information.

Career path

Working in this capacity offers you the opportunity to develop strong relationships within the community by providing access to the courts and legal system, legal education and advice, and representation for little or no fee. You may devote a portion of time to pro bono work while retaining

a fee-paying client base in private practice or you could become a full-time community legal practitioner.

Where you can work

The number of private law firms offering pro bono programs to their solicitors has increased. There are also the options of working with community legal centres or for the statutory authority Legal Aid Queensland.

Barrister – working as an independent legal counsel

As a barrister you will play a vital role in the administration of justice and in the functioning of the legal profession. You will be an advocate before courts and tribunals and a consultant legal advisor. Barristers generally receive work, through referral, from solicitors and represent clients in court. You will be an expert on the rules of evidence and court procedure, in determining the appropriate method and argument for presentation in court, in questioning and cross-examining witnesses, and negotiating settlements to discontinue legal proceedings.

Career path

In Queensland, barristers have always practised as independent legal counsel. By not forming any business partnerships or associations this ensures independence as legal counsel is not compromised. Every barrister is solely responsible for his or her own work. Becoming a barrister will assist if you aspire to become a judge.

Where you can work

Most barristers’ Chambers are located in Brisbane, but there are regional opportunities like Townsville, Rockhampton, Cairns, Southport, Toowoomba, Ipswich, Mackay, Maroochydore and other country centres.

Other opportunities in the legal profession

There are many more career opportunities in the legal profession. You may want to research the roles and responsibilities of the following:

• courtandlegalclerks• paralegal• lawlibrarian• mediator• criminologist.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT

With record numbers of solicitors leaving private practice within three years, it is important to make sure you know what you want from your work. The first step is to forget simplistic competitive notions of ‘partnership by 35 or bust’, focus on what is really important to you personally and not to let peer competition, assumptions or others define success for you.

So, what do you want from your work – in both the short and longer terms?

• Interestingwork?• Personaldevelopment?• Money?• Status/peerrespect?• Challenge?• Prestige?• Goodworkplaceculture?• Security?• Work-lifebalance?• Control–overyourlifeorwork?• Goodrelationshipwithbossand/ or colleagues?• Aneasylife?

You can probably identify a number of things from that list, and maybe more. Think about what it will mean to get these things. What will you have to give up? Are you willing to make the sacrifices?

In the early years of your career, there is one other factor you should be looking to focus on experience. Experience will not only give you vital information about dif ferent paths and whether they might be right for you, but it will also open up

different opportunities and provide you with choice going forward. If you find you are doing the same work for more than a year with no sign of development, ask yourself if you are happy with this.

While you will gain some experience through your employers, making the right choices will require accumulating more information. Make a proactive effort to network with friends and learn about dif ferent options:

• bigfirmversussmallfirm• differentpracticeareas• in-house,governmentorthecommunitysector• regional,rural,urbanorsuburban.

What matters for the practice?

While it may seem obvious to say ‘do what’s expected of you’, this is not as easy as it sounds. From just a bit of networking you will realise that practices or employers are dif ferent. Different practices and different individuals will have different expectations which they might or might not articulate or explain. For this reason, it is vital to ask, listen, watch and network. Never assume you know all there is to know about what’s expected of you, especially as you progress in your career and ‘what’s expected of you’ develops and changes.

If your focus is on partnership and promotion, here are some tips on what your employer might be looking for:

• highperformance–intermsofbothquality and quantity

• lowmaintenance–seekhelpwhenneeded, but don’t be a burden

• collegiality• specialistexpertiseorsomethingnewor

unique to offer• grinders,mindersorfinders–practicesoften

look for a mix of grinders (desk-based hard-workers), minders (good at supervising a team) and finders (rainmakers). Where do you fit? Does that fit with your practices’ needs? Do you need to develop your minding or finding skills?

What to avoid

Starting out is daunting, don’t stall your career before you’ve got going! Knowing what not to do is key to building a favourable reputation.

Isolating yourself – try not to isolate yourself socially or politically. Develop a group of work friends and try to get along with everyone as much as possible. While it is good to have opinions, build coalitions where possible, pick your battles carefully and avoid a reputation for negativity.

Second level stupidity – anyone can make mistakes, but mistakes arising from the below will get you a reputation which may be difficult to shake:

• notseekinghelpwhenclearlyneeded• cover-ups• notheedingadvicefromsuperiors• makingthesamemistakesrepeatedly.

Personal development

You should always be looking to develop – either through experience or other learning. Some firms are excellent in developing their staff but you shouldn’t rely on your practice to manage your development. You need to work on any weaknesses and try to develop a key strength and get known for this.

Wellbeing

Look after yourself, and always remind yourself that there’s more to life than work. In addition to managing your personal wellbeing (diet, exercise, work-life balance, stress management techniques, regular holidays, etc) look out for workplace stressors, and manage them as best you can. If you find you are not enjoying your work, you do have some options:

• changewhatyoudon’tlike• changeyourattitude• changeyourjob.
