Origin and Evolution –Primavera P6

How it started…
■ In 1983, Joel Koppelman and Dick Faris founded Primavera Systems in Philadelphia.
■ Primavera Project Planner (P3) was born.
■ The leading scheduling product in the engineering and construction industries.
■ Single user, desktop client
■ The fanciest project management and scheduling software in town.
■ To cope with the evolving technologies such as the internet, it had to evolve too.

Evolution – The stages in the life of P6
■ May 1983: Primavera Systems, Inc. is established
▪ P3 Launched
■ 1994: P3 for Windows, Version 1 released.
■ 1999: Primavera purchases the software called, “Eagle Ray” and Primavera Enterprise, Version 1.0 is released July 1999.
▪ P3 e/c is launched for Engineering & Construction.
▪ TeamPlay for IT and Financial services.
■ December 1999: Primavera Enterprise Version 1.5 is released. Progress Reporter for the Web is introduced.
Evolution Continued…
■ 2004: Primavera Version 5 is released (P5). P3 Engineering & Construction is renamed to “Primavera”.
■ 2007: P6 Version 6 is released. Primavera named it “P6”.
■ 2008: Oracle acquired Primavera Systems and turns it into Primavera Global Business Unit.
■ 2009: P6 Version 7 is released, named “P6v7”.
■ December 2010: Enterprise Portfolio Project Management (EPPM) is released. This is the new name for the web version of P6 Version 8. A number of features found earlier only on the client/server version of P6 are introduced in EPPM.
Evolution Continued…
■ May 2011: P6 R8.1 is released shortly after R 8.0.
▪ This is the new name for P6 version 8 client/server.
▪ With R 8.1, the client/server and the web releases were
separated out.
— P6 Professional R 8.1 is the official name for client/server
application.
— P6 EPPM R 8.1 is the web version along with the optional client for
web.
■ December 2011: P6 Release 8.2 (both EPPM & P6 Professional.)
■ March 2013 : P6 Release 8.3.

■ Primavera Project Planner (P3) offered a very important thing to project managers – Control. Control over schedule, budget and quality.
■ P3 is the recognized standard for high-end, high performance scheduling and resource control.
■ Features of P3:
▪ High-end scheduling
▪ Prioritize, plan and manage multiple, large and complex projects
efficiently.
▪ Store past-period performance
▪ Analyze unlimited what-if alternatives and target plans

▪ Share data in a secure multiuser environment
▪ Interact with project data through PERT charts, bar charts and
time-scaled logic diagrams
▪ Communicate effectively using intranets, custom reports and e-

Primavera P6
■ Primavera P6 6.0 release was a major milestone in the life of P6 with the introduction of P6 Web access and a number of other components.
■ It created a collaborative environment through its set of integrated components with easy-to-use, personalized interfaces for all project stakeholders. P6 used standard Windows interfaces, client/server architecture, Web-enabled technology, and scalable, network-based (Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server) databases.
■ The next major release in 6.0 line was the P6 version 6.21 which included a number a new features and fixes.

■ Enterprise Portfolio Project Management (EPPM) is released.
■ The new name for the web version of P6 Version 8.0
■ Dozens of features found earlier only on the client/server version of P6 are introduced in EPPM
▪ P6 Professional made dependent on P6 EPPM.
■ Shortly after 8.0, P6 EPPM 8.1 is released
■ Introducing P6 Optional Client for EPPM and P6 Professional Client.
■ P6 Team Member for iOS and Email Services is introduced.

■ Features Removed from both versions:
▪ Summary-Only Projects (along with Methodology Manager)
▪ Microsoft ProjectLink / MSP-Managed Projects
▪ Project Architect
▪ Top Down Estimation
▪ Check Project Integrity
▪ BTRIEVE database engine files necessary to import P3
schedules.
▪ SDK is deprecated
