Application and scope
The MiCOM P63x seriesdifferential protection devices areintended for fast and selectiveshort-circuit protection oftransformers, motors, generatorsand other installations with two,three or four windings respectively.
Functions
The differential protection deviceshave the following main functions(with differences between themodels as shown in the table onpage 3):

The MiCOM P63x seriesdifferential protection devices areof modular design. The plug-inmodules are housed in a robustaluminium case and electricallyconnected via an analogue and adigital bus printed circuit board.
The nominal currents or the nominalvoltage, respectively, of themeasuring inputs can be set withthe help of function parameters.
The nominal voltage range of theoptical coupler inputs is24 to 250 V DC withoutinternal switching.
The auxiliary voltage input for thepower supply is a wide-rangedesign with a nominal voltagerange of 48 to 250 V DC and100 to 230 V AC. An additionalversion is available for the lowernominal voltage range of24 to 36 V DC.
All output relays are suitable forboth signals and trip duties.
The optional PT 100 input is lead-compensated, balanced andlinearized for PT 100 resistancethermometers per IEC 60751.
The optional 0 to 20 mA inputprovides open-circuit and overloadmonitoring, zero suppressiondefined by a setting, plus theoption of linearizing the inputvariable via 20 adjustableinterpolation points.

configuration procedure, the usercan adapt the device flexibly to thescope of protection required in eachparticular application. Due to thepowerful, freely configurable logicof the device, special applicationscan be accommodated.

Models available
The main functions and the inputs
and outputs available for theP63x series design types are listed
in the table below. Where a main
function is available more than
once for a particular design type,the user can assign these functions
to the individual windings asrequired.
For 11/ 2 switched and ring-busbarsystems, the devices allow the
definition of a virtual winding. The
currents processed by the device for
this winding are a summation of theinputs from the two appropriate sets
of CT inputs.
Two freely selected measuredsignals (cyclically updated
measured operating data and
stored measured fault data) can be
output as a load-independent directcurrent via the two optional 0 to
20 mA outputs. The characteristics
are defined via 3 adjustable
interpolation points allowing aminimum output current (4 mA, for
example) for receiver-side open-
circuit monitoring, knee-point
definition for fine scaling and alimitation to lower nominal currents
(10 mA, for example). Where
sufficient output relays are
available, a freely selectedmeasured variable can be output in
BCD-coded form via contacts.

Tripping characteristicsThe tripping characteristics of thedifferential protection device hastwo knees (see Figure 1). The firstknee is dependent on the setting ofthe basic threshold value Id> andis on the fault line for single-sidefeed. The second knee of thetripping characteristic is defined bya setting. Above the user-selecteddifferential current level Id>>>, therestraining current is no longertaken into account.
Harmonic restraintStabilization under inrushconditions is based on the presenceof second harmonic components inthe differential currents. The ratio ofthe second harmonic component tothe fundamental wave for thedifferential currents of themeasuring system serves as thecriterion. Optionally, tripping isblocked either across all threemeasuring systems or selectively forone measuring system. However,from a user-selected differentialcurrent level Id>>, the blockingcriterion is no longer taken intoaccount. For application as adifferential protection device formotors or generators, the harmonicrestraint can be deactivated.
Overfluxing restraintFor stabilization under overfluxingconditions, the ratio of the fifthharmonic to the fundamental for thedifferential currents is used. Trippingis blocked on a per measuringsystem basis. For differential currentlevels of 4Irefor higher, the blockingcriterion is no longer taken intoaccount. The overfluxing restraintfunction may be deactivated.
Through stabilizationUp to a certain limit, stability in theevent of external faults is ensuredby means of the bias. Due to thetriple-slope tripping characteristic,the stabilization is particularlyeffective for high currents.However, as an additionalsafeguard for through-currents withtransformer saturation, the MiCOMP63x series differential protectiondevices are provided with asaturation detector. Particularly thestart-up of direct on-line startinginduction motors represents aproblem in differential protectiondue to transient transformersaturation caused by adisplacement of the start-up currentfor relatively high primary timeconstants. Even under suchunfavorable measurementconditions, the MiCOM P63x series
differential protection devicesperform with excellent stability.
Main functions
Main functions are autonomousfunction groups and can beindividually configured or disabledto suit a particular application.Function groups that are notrequired and have been disabledby the user are masked completely
(except for the configurationparameter) and functional supportis withdrawn from such groups.This concept permits an extensivescope of functions and universalapplication of the protection devicein a single design version, while atthe same time providing for a clearand straight-forward settingprocedure and adaptation to theprotection task under consideration.
Differential protection
Amplitude matchingOn the basis of the primarytransformer currents, theMiCOM P63x series differentialprotection devices can be flexiblyadapted to the reference currents ofthe protected object. Amplitudematching is by means of a straight-forward input of the referencepower common to all windings,plus the nominal voltages and thenominal transformer currents for
each winding. The resultingreference currents and matchingfactors are automatically deducedby the device and checked forcompatibility with the internallyallowed value ranges.
Vector group matching and
zero-sequence filteringMatching of the MiCOM P63xseries differential protection devicesto the vector group of the protectedobject is via a straight-forward
input of the relevant vector groupidentification number. Themathematical formula to be appliedto the measured currents isautomatically selected internallyaccording to the relevant vectorgroup and zero-sequence filtering istaken into account simultaneously.For special applications, zero-sequence filtering may be deactivatedseparately for each winding.

For the optimum performance of thedifferential protection functionunder inrush conditions of theprotected transformer, starting ofthe phase current stage I> and thenegative-sequence current stageIneg> can be stabilized, if desired.The blocking signals of the inrushstabilization function of differential
protection are selective to themeasuring system. These signalsare linked by OR operators toobtain the criterion for stabilization.As a consequence, stabilization isalways effective across all threephases. Neither the phase currentstages I>> and I>>> nor thenegative-sequence current stagesIneg>> and Ineg>>> are affectedby the stabilization.
Additionally, the operate values ofall overcurrent stages can be set asdynamic parameters. For a settablehold time, switching to the dynamicoperate values can be done via anexternal signal.The hold time is selected toimplement a cold load pick-upfunction, assuring stability whenincreased loading is present. Oncethe hold time has elapsed, thestatic operate values are reinstated.
Ground differential
protectionThe ground differential protection(UK: Restricted earth faultprotection, REF) mode can beapplied to transformer windingswith grounded neutral point wherethe neutral point/ ground
connection is fitted with a currenttransformer.
Ground differential protection(UK: Restricted earth faultprotection, REF) is based oncomparing the vector sum of thephase currents of the relevanttransformer winding to the neutralpoint current. The vector sum of thephase currents can be generated,for example, by residualconnection of the three main
current transformers.The advantage of grounddifferential protection (UK:Restricted earth fault protection,REF) resides in the lineardependence of the sensitivity on thedistance between the fault and theneutral point.
(Notes : REF is applicable for wye-connected windings. Balanced REFfor delta windings is in development).
Definite-time
overcurrent protectionThe definite-time overcurrentprotection function operates withseparate measuring systems for theevaluation of the three phasecurrents, the negative-sequencecurrent and the residual current.The negative-sequence current isdetermined from the filteredfundamental component of thethree phase currents. The residualcurrent is obtained either from the
fourth current input or from theinternal vector addition of the threephase currents, depending on theusers choice. Three stages eachare provided for the three phases.Each stage of the phase current-related measuring system operateswith phase-selective starting. Theeffect on the general starting signalof the stages measuring in thenegative-sequence system and inthe residual path, respectively, canbe suppressed if preferred.
Inverse-time
overcurrent protection
The inverse-time overcurrentprotection operates on the basis ofone measuring system each for thethree phase currents, the negative-sequence current and the residualcurrent just as the definite-timeovercurrent protection does.
However, the three measuringsystems operate with single-stageevaluation for this function. Thetimer stage of the phase-current-related measuring system operateswith phase-selective starting.The effect on the general startingsignal of the stages measuring inthe residual path and in thenegative-sequence system respectively,can be suppressed if desired.
For the individual measuringsystems, the user can select from amultitude of tripping characteristics(see Table 1, page 6).
Starting of the phase current stagecan be stabilized under inrushconditions if desired. The blockingsignals from the harmonic restraintfunction of differential protection,formed selectively for eachmeasuring system, are linked by anOR operator to serve as thecriterion. Consequently, thisstabilization is always effective
across all three phases.

Intermittent startings of the phase,
negative sequence or residualcurrent stage can be accumulatedon the basis of the set trippingcharacteristic by means of asettable hold time. Tripping is alsoperformed in accordance with therelevant tripping characteristic.
Additionally, the operate values ofall overcurrent stages can be set asdynamic parameters. For a settablehold time, switching to the dynamicoperate values can be done via an
external signal. The hold time isselected to implement a cold loadpick-up function, assuring stabilitywhen increased loading is present.Once the hold time has elapsed,the static operate values arereinstated.
Thermal overload protection
Using this function, thermal overloadprotection can be realized. Thehighest of the three phase currentsserves to track a first-order thermal
replica according to IEC 60255-8.
The tripping time is determined by
the set thermal time constant ofthe protected object, the set trippinglevel trip and depends on theaccumulated thermal load 0:
The temperature of the coolingmedium can be taken into accountin the thermal replica using theoptional PT 100 input or the
0 to 20 mA input. The user has achoice of using a thermal replica onthe basis of either absolute orrelative temperature.
An alarm signal can be issued inaccordance with the set warninglevel warning. As an alternativemethod of generating an alarm, thecyclically updated measuredoperating value of the predictedtime remaining before tripping ismonitored to check whether it is
falling below a set threshold.
Over/ undervoltageprotection
The over/ undervoltage protectionfunction evaluates the fundamentalcomponent of the voltage by way oftwo definite-time overvoltage andundervoltage stages each.
Over/ underfrequency
protection
Over/ underfrequency protectionhas four stages.Each of these can be operated inone of the following modes:
Over/ underfrequency monitoring
Over/ underfrequency monitoringcombined with differentialfrequency gradient monitoring(df/ dt) for system decouplingapplications
Over/ underfrequency monitoringcombined with medium frequencygradient monitoring (f/ t) forload shedding applications.
Overexcitation protection
Overexcitation protection detectsimpermissible high magnetic fluxdensitiy in the iron core of powertransformers which can occur incase of increase in voltage and/ ordecrease in frequency. Flux densityabove the rated value saturates the
iron core which may result in powertransformer overheating due tolarge iron losses.
Overexcitation protection processesthe voltage to frequency ratio (V/ f)in relation to their nominal values.The inverse-time characteristic maybe set via 12 value pairs andtherefore enables accurateadaptation to power transformerdata. In addition a definite-timealarm stage and a definite-time
tripping stage are available.

Measuring circuit monitoring
Measuring circuit monitoringprocesses the ratio of negativesequence current to positivesequence current in order to detectfailure within CTs secondarycircuit. However unwanted trip bythe differential element cannot beprevented in those cases if the loadcurrent is sufficient high.
Limit value monitoring
The highest of the three phasecurrents is the basis of evaluationby a definite-time overcurrent stagewith adjustable operate value andtime delay. Thereby these measuredvalues are monitored for exceedingthe set limit.
Programmable logic
User-configurable logic enables theuser to set up logic operations onbinary signals within a frameworkof Boolean equations. By means ofa straightforward configurationprocedure, any of the signals of the
protection device can be linked bylogic ORor ANDoperations withthe possibility of additionalnegation operations.
The output signal of an equationcan be fed into a further, higher-
order equation as an input signal,thus leading to a set of interlinkedBoolean equations.
The output signal of each equationis fed to a separate timer stage withtwo timer elements each and achoice of operating modes. Thus theoutput signal of each equation canbe assigned a freely configurabletime characteristic.
The two output signals of each
equation can be configured to eachavailable input signal after logic ORlinking. The user-configurable logicfunction is then able to influence theindividual functions without externalwiring (block, reset, trigger, forexample).
Via non-storable continuous signals,monostable trigger signals andbistable setting/ resetting signals,the Boolean equations can becontrolled externally via any of thedevices interfaces.
Global functions
Functions operating globally allowthe adaptation of the devicesinterfaces to the protected powersystem, offer support duringcommissioning and testing, providecontinuously updated informationon the operation, as well as
valuable analysis results followingevents in the protected system.
Clock synchronization
The devices incorporates an internalclock with a resolution of 1ms.All events are time-tagged based onthis clock, entered in the recordingmemory appropriate to theirsignificance and signaled via thecommunication interface.Alternatively two externalsynchronisation signals can be used
according to the selectedcommunication protocol: using oneof the protocols Modbus, DNP3,IEC 60870-5-103, IEC 60870-5-101the device will be synchronized by atime telegram from a higher-levelsubstation control system or in anyother case it will be synchronizedusing the IRIG-B signal input. Theinternal clock will then be adjustedaccordingly and operate with anaccuracy of 10 ms if synchronizedvia protocol and 1ms ifsynchronized via IRIG-B signal.
Parameter subset selection
The function parameters for settingthe protection functions are, to alarge extent, stored in four parametersubsets. Switching between thesesubsets is readily achieved via localcontrol or binary input.
Operating data recording
For the continuous recording ofprocesses in system operation or of
events, a non-volatile ring memoryis provided. The relevant signals,each fully tagged with date andtime at signal start and end, areentered in chronological sequence.Included are control actions such asthe enabling or disabling offunctions as well as local controltriggering for testing and resetting.The onset and end of events in thenetwork, as far as these represent adeviation from normal operation(overload, ground fault or short-circuit, for example) are recorded.
Overload data acquisition
Overload situations in the networkrepresent a deviation from normalsystem operation and can bepermitted for a brief period only.The overload protection functionsenabled in the protective devicesrecognize overload situations in thesystem and provide for acquisitionof overload data such as themagnitude of the overload current,the relative heating during theoverload situation and its duration.
Overload recording
While an overload conditionpersists in the network, the relevantsignals, each fully tagged with dateand time at signal start and end,are entered into a non-volatilememory in chronological sequence.
The measured overload data, fullytagged with the date and time ofacquisition, are also entered.
Up to 8 overload situations can berecorded. If more than 8 overloadsituations occur without interimmemory clearance then the oldestoverload recording is overwritten.
Fault data acquisition
A short-circuit within the network isdescribed as a fault. The short-
circuit protection functions enabledin the devices recognize short-circuits within the system andtrigger acquisition of the associatedmeasured fault data such as themagnitude of the short-circuit currentand the fault duration.
Fault recording
While a fault condition persists inthe power system, the relevantsignals, each fully tagged with dateand time at signal start and end,
are entered into a non-volatilememory in chronological sequence.The measured fault data, fullytagged with the date and time ofacquisition, are also entered.
Furthermore, the sampled values ofall analogue input variables, such asphase currents and neutral-pointcurrents, are recorded during a fault.
Up to 8 faults can be recorded. Ifmore than 8 faults occur without
interim memory clearance then theoldest fault recording is overwritten.

Password protection
Access barriers protect the entermode in order to guard againstinadvertent or unauthorizedchanging of parameters ortriggering of control functions.
Measured value panels
The configuration of the localcontrol panel allows the installationof measured value Panelsonthe LCD display. The Panels areautomatically displayed for certainoperation conditions of thesystem. Priority increases fromnormal operation to operationunder overload conditions andfinally to operation following ashort-circuit in the system. Theprotection device thus providesthe measured value data relevant
for the prevailing conditions.
Control
All data required for operation ofthe protection and control unit areentered from the integrated localcontrol panel. Data important forsystem management is also read outfrom here. The following tasks can behandled via the local control panel:
Readout and modification ofsettings
Readout of cyclically updatedmeasured operating data andstate signals
Readout of operating data logsand monitoring signal logs
Readout of event logs (afteroverload situations, ground faults orshort-circuits in the power system)
Resetting of the unit andtriggering of further controlfunctions designed to supporttesting and commissioning tasks
The local control panel shown inFigure 3 comprises the local controlelements and functions describedbelow.

Self-monitoring
Comprehensive self-monitoringprocedures within the devices ensurethat internal hardware or software
errors are detected and do not causemalfunctions of the protective devices.
As the auxiliary voltage is turnedon, a functional test is carried out.Cyclic self-monitoring tests are runduring operation. If test resultsdeviate from the default value thenthe corresponding signal is enteredinto the non-volatile monitoringsignal memory. The result of thefault diagnosis determines whethera blocking of the protection device
will occur or whether a warningonly is issued.
Display
(1) The integrated local controlpanel has an LCD display with4x20 alphanumeric characters.
17 LED indicators are providedfor signal display.
(2) 5 LED indicators arepermanently assigned to signals.
(3) The remaining 12 LED indicatorsare available for free assignmentby the user. A separate adhesivelabel is provided for user-definedlabeling of these LED indicatorsaccording to the chosenconfiguration.
Menu tree
(4) By pressing thecursor keys and guided by theLCD display, the user moves
within a plain text menu. Allsetting parameters andmeasured variables as well asall local control functions arearranged in this menu which isstandardized for all devices ofthe system. Changes to thesettings can be prepared andconfirmed by means of theENTER key which alsoserves to trigger local controlfunctions. In the event oferroneous entries, exit from theEDIT MODE with rejection of theentries is possible at any time bymeans of the CLEAR key .When the EDIT MODE is notactivated, pressing the CLEARkey has the effect of resettingthe indications.Pressing the READ keyprovides direct access to apreselected point in the menu.
Type label and PC interface
(5) The upper covering flap islabelled with the device typedesignation. Located under theflap is the type identificationlabel with information of ordernumber, serial number and thenominal electrical values.
(6) Located under the lowercovering flap is the serialinterface for connecting a PC.
(7) To prevent unauthorizedopening of the lower flap, the
attached eyelets can be sealed.

Mechanical design
The devices are supplied in twocase designs.
Surface-mounted Flush-mountedWith both case designs, connectionis via threaded terminal ends withthe option of either pin or ring-terminal connections.
Two 40TE flush mounted cases canbe combined to form a complete19" mounting rack.
Figure 4 shows the modularhardware structure of the devices.The plug-in modules can becombined to suit individualrequirements. The device itself canidentify the fitted modules. Duringeach startup, the number and type
of fitted modules are identified andchecked for compliance with thepermissible configurations. As afunction of the components actuallyfitted, the correspondingconfiguration parameters are thenenabled for application.
Transformer module T
The transformer modules convertthe measured currents and voltagesto the internal processing levelsand provides for electricalisolation.
Processor module P
The processor module performs theanalogue/ digital conversion of themeasured variables as well as alldigital processing tasks.
Local control module L
The local control moduleencompasses all control anddisplay elements as well as a PCinterface. The local control moduleis located behind the front paneland connected to the processormodule via a ribbon cable.
Communication module A
The optional communicationmodule provides one or two serialinformation interfaces for theintegration of the protection deviceinto a substation control system andfor remote access.The communication module isplugged into the processor module.
Bus modules B
Bus modules are printed circuitboards (PCBs), providing theelectrical connection between theother modules. Two types of busmodules are used, namely theanalogue and digital-bus PCB.
Binary modules X
The binary modules are equippedwith optical couplers for binarysignal input and/ or output relaysfor the output of signals andcommands.
Analogue module Y
The analogue module is fitted witha PT 100 input, a 20 mA input andtwo 20 mA outputs. One outputrelay each is assigned to two20 mA outputs. Additionally, four
optical coupler inputs areavailable.
Power Supply module V
The power supply module ensuresthe electrical isolation of the deviceas well as providing the powersupply. Depending on the chosendesign version, optical couplerinputs and output relays areprovided in addition.
