Promoting a Healthy Future Fomentando Buena Salud FALL/WINTER 2013

Jessica Fitz (above) has volunteered at Jacob’s Heart since 2002.

The Health Trust is pleased to provide feature stories about the vital nonprofit programs and partnerships that your donations help to fund. These stories, and the people who tell them, inspire us with their dedication to improving the quality of life and health for all the residents of our community.

By Lori Butterworth, Founder and Executive Director

Jessica Fitz was a vibrant, healthy high school sophomore when her parents heard the devastating news from the doctors at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, “Your

daughter has cancer: Lymphoma. Stage four.” “I went from being a normal 15 year-old to ‘the girl with

the terminal disease’ and spent most of my high school days in the hospital getting chemotherapy and radiation. As I lost my hair and started to look awful, my friends stopped coming around,” said Jessica reflecting on the feelings of loneliness and isolation so common to teens with cancer. “During all my years of treatment, there was only one place I felt safe, connected and supported ... Jacob’s Heart.”

Earlier this year, Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services received a grant from the Pajaro Valley Community Health Trust to provide essential services designed to reduce the feelings of isolation and fear felt by the entire fam-ily when a child is diagnosed with cancer. Specifically, the funding supports the Art from the Heart, program, which has expanded since Jessica received services from Jacob’s Heart. The program has grown to include “heART on wheels,”,which brings expressive art and counseling support

A Special Lifeline for Children and Families

Jacob’s Heart Prescribes “Art from the Heart”to the homes of families in the Pajaro Valley.

“All of Jacob’s Heart’s programs were a lifeline for me and my family, especially Art from the Heart,” says Jessica. “It was something that helped my little brother cope with my cancer.”

After 15 years serving nearly 500 local families of children with cancer, Jacob’s Heart remains clear that art is a unique vehicle for allowing children and families to express feelings about cancer that they might not otherwise be able to express.

Some examples of how Jacob’s Heart bilingual social work-ers use art expression projects are to have families decorate bags or boxes and place notes inside that are later transported from one family member to the child and parent at the hos-pital, then in turn they fill up the bags/boxes with notes to go back to the rest of the family.

Families participate in projects like Acoustic Poems, where they take the word “cancer” and add a feeling to each of the letters. Or, one family member draws the beginning of a story, and then the remaining members draw something to develop the story. One of the families stated, “We love this! It’s the only time we can all sit together and talk.”

For people who feel less comfortable with art, they are asked to create “scribble drawings” where they scribble on paper, then look for shapes through the scribbles, color them, and then talk about it.

Now in full remission, most any day of the week you can find Jessica, a healthy young adult, at the Jacob’s Heart Chil-dren’s Cancer Support Services center on Freedom Boulevard as she completes her college internship — giving back to the organization that gave her so much.

This month, Jessica will help spearhead the TAG Team: Ja-cob’s Heart’s Teen Advisory Group, a group of teens and young adults who have experienced exactly what Jessica did — being a teen with cancer. As a friend and advocate to people battling cancer, Jessica says, “The one piece of advice that I can give to anyone going through cancer is to never give up, never sur-render, and always stay positive! I know that I am alive today because of that. If you ever feel sad, scared, or angry, create a piece of art from your heart.”

For more information on the programs and services of Jacob’s Heart, or to make a donation, contact Lori Butterworth at [email protected] or call (831)724-9100, X101.

Remember to mark your calendar to join us in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of An Evening of Wine and Roses, the Health Trust’s annual special event fundraiser, on Friday, November 1st, 2013 at

the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds.Looking back over the history of Wine and Roses, we note many ele-

ments that have helped to improve and sustain the event for three decades. These include leadership and generous participation from members of the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association, our long-time event partner; generous commitment from numerous food and bever-age vendors; generous support from local rose and cut flower growers in the Pajaro Valley; loyal and generous sponsorship support from dozens of areas businesses; and the dedication and innovative contributions of hundreds of community volunteers over the years. Finally, a major factor in the success of the Wine and Roses event has been the loyal attendance of thousands of community residents.

As we reflect on the remarkable history of the Wine and Roses event, clearly “generosity” is the strongest theme that emerges and the primary reason for its success for so many years. At the Health Trust, we are very proud to serve such a generous community.

For this reason, it will be a special pleasure this year to welcome back old friends and new supporters to enjoy premium wines from 24-Santa Cruz Mountains vintners, gourmet hors d’oeuvres from 18 area restaurants
