— Distinguished Judges —Tony Gairo

Tony Gairo maintains an active schedule as a composer, performer, and educator of jazz, the saxophones, flutes, and clarinets, jazz composition, arranging, theory and analysis, and jazz history. Voted the 2004 Jazz Musician of the Year - Lehigh Valley (PA) by Pulseweekly Magazine, he is the leader of the Tony Gairo Band, an 11-piece jazz ensemble whose “book” consists mostly of his compositions and arrangements and the Tony Gairo Big Band, a 17-piece modern jazz orchestra whose repertoire consists entirely of his original compositions. Since 1996, Gairo has been an Artist/Lecturer on the Jazz Faculty at Moravian College, where he is the Director of Jazz Combo I and teaches saxophone, flute, clarinet, jazz improvisation, jazz composition/arranging, and jazz history. In April 2006, the Music Department presented him with the T. Edgar Shields Prize for Distinguished Studio Instruction. Since 2004, he has been an adjunct on the Jazz Faculty at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA where he is currently the Director of the Jazz Ensemble. In addition, he is an active member of the Music Faculty at Lafayette College, Easton, PA. Mr. Gairo has been commissioned to compose original scores and arrangements by Moravian College, Wissahickon High School, Lou Lanza and the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective. His recent Moravian commissions include Collaboration: A Jazz Ballet (2007) and the jazz opera The Real Book of Gig (2011). As always, Tony Gairo keeps a busy calendar of public and private performances and recording sessions both as a leader of bands and as a sideman in a sundry of ensembles, styles, and projects.

Patrick Dorian

Patrick Dorian, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music, was a member of the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania Music Department from 1987 through 2013. In 2010, he was awarded the highest faculty honor, the preeminent rank of Distinguished Professor of Music. He taught courses in jazz studies and film music and was the liaison to the Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection. He is the author and reviewer of many professional journal articles, chapters in several books, and CD insert booklets.

Professor Dorian’s long-time experience as a concert band and jazz ensemble director make him a sought-after evaluator and adjudicator at many festivals. His biography is included in Trumpet Greats: A Biographical Dictionary by David R. Hickman et al. (2013). It outlines Professor Dorian’s accomplished teaching career, in addition to his performing and recording careers, especially as a long-time member of the Phil Woods Big Band, the David Liebman Big Band directed by Gunnar Mossblad, the Jazz Artists Repertory Orchestra (JARO), and the Water Gap Brass. He has toured internationally, with performances at major jazz festivals, jazz clubs, and concert halls.

Professor Dorian performed on two Grammy-nominated CDs (Celebration!,

1997, and Beyond the Line, 2003). He also performed on the David Liebman Big Band (DLBB) DVD and CD LIVE . . . As Always (2011). Recently released recordings include New Celebration by Phil Woods and the COTA Festival Orchestra, Tomorrow’s Expectations by the DLBB, and A Tribute to Wayne Shorter by the DLBB. He has recently performed with The Temptations, The Four Freshmen, and the national tour of Cathy Rigby Is Peter Pan.

In June 2007, Professor Dorian was presented with the Great Teacher Award by the ESU Alumni Association. In October 2007, he was inducted into the East Stroudsburg Area School District Music Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the Fred Waring Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts and the Community. Professor Dorian holds degrees from Northwestern University (MM Performance) and Ithaca College (BM Performance and Music Education) and taught instrumental music in public schools for 14 years.

Wayne Maura

The President of the Pennsylvania Jazz collective, Wayne made his living as a professional drummer for 25 years. He toured the US playing in many types of bands. Following in his father’s footsteps he is now a magisterial district judge.

Dave Liebman

David Liebman was born in 1946 into a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York. As a child in 1949 he contracted polio. He began classical piano lessons at the age of nine and saxophone by twelve. His interest in jazz was sparked by seeing John Coltrane perform live in New York City clubs such as Birdland, the Village Vanguard and the Half Note. Throughout high school and college, Liebman pursued his jazz interest by studying with Joe Allard, Lennie Tristano, and Charles Lloyd. Upon graduation from New York University (with a degree in American History), he began to seriously devote himself to the full-time pursuit of being a jazz artist.

In the early 1970s, after recording with Genya Ravan and Ten Wheel Drive, Liebman took the leading role (as President) in organizing several dozen musicians into a cooperative, Free Life Communication, which became an integral part of the fertile New York loft jazz scene in the early 1970s and was funded by The New York State Council of the Arts and the Space for Innovative Development. After one year spent with Ten Wheel Drive, one of the early jazz fusion groups, Liebman secured the saxophone/flute position with the group of John Coltrane’s drummer, Elvin Jones. Within two years, Liebman reached the zenith of his apprenticeship period when Miles Davis hired him. These years, 1970–74, were filled with tours and recordings. At the same time, Liebman began exploring his own music, first in the Open Sky Trio with Bob Moses and then with pianist Richie Beirach in the group Lookout Farm. This group recorded for the German-based ECM label as well as A&M Records while touring the U.S., Canada, India, Japan and Europe. Lookout Farm was awarded the number one

position in the category “Group Deserving of Wider Recognition”in the 1976 Down Beat’s International Critics’ Poll. In these years he also played and recorded with Pee Wee Ellis.

In 1977, Liebman toured the world with pianist Chick Corea, followed up the next year by the formation of the David Liebman Quintet with John Scofield, Kenny Kirkland and Terumasa Hino as featured sidemen. After several world tours and recordings by the quintet over three years, he reunited with Richard Beirach. They began performing and recording as a duo, as well as creating the group Quest in 1981. Beginning with bassist George Mraz and drummer Al Foster, the group solidified when Ron McClure and Billy Hart joined in 1984. Through 1991, Quest recorded seven CDs, toured extensively and did many workshops with students worldwide.

1990s to present After 23 years with the Dave Liebman Group (featuring guitarist Vic Juris), Liebman formed “Expansions” reaching out to the younger generation featuring bassist Tony Marino, pianist Bobby Avey, on reeds Matt Vashlishan and Alex Ritz on drums. Over the past decades, Liebman has often been featured with top European jazz artists such as Joachim Kühn, Daniel Humair, Paolo Fresu, Jon Christensen, Bobo Stenson and in the World View Trio with Austrian drummer Wolfgang Reisenger and French bassist Jean-Paul Celea. His ability to play in so many diverse styles has led to big band and radio orchestra performances with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, the WDR and NDR in Germany, the Metropole Orchestra of the Netherlands, the new music group Klangforum from Vienna and, most notably, Liebman was the first improviser to perform with the world famous Ensemble InterContemporain founded by Pierre Boulez in France. On all these occasions, the music is arranged from Liebman’s own compositions and improvisations. He has consistently placed among the top finalists in the Down Beat Critic’s and Reader’s Polls since 1973 in the Soprano Saxophone category and on occasion, flute. Lieb has been featured on several hundred recordings of which he has been the leader or co-leader on over one hundred. Nearly three hundred original compositions have been recorded. His artistic output has ranged from straight-ahead classic jazz to chamber music, from fusion to avant garde, with numerous CDs featuring original arrangements of the music of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Kurt Weill, Alec Wilder, Cole Porter, Jobim, Puccini and the Beatles.

Liebman has published material on a variety of subjects including instructional DVDs. He has also published chamber music and over the years has contributed regularly to various periodicals, such as the Saxophone Journal and the International Association of Jazz Educators Journal. He is the author of several milestone books: Self Portrait of a Jazz Artist, Jazz Connections: Miles Davis and David Liebman, A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony and Melody, and Developing a Personal Saxophone Sound. Several of these books have been translated to other languages.

His teaching activities at universities and in clinic settings have taken him literally around the world as a result of his varied musical directions and expertise on several instruments, along with an ability to articulate the intricacies of the jazz language, aesthetic and technique. Over the years, he has regularly received grantees to study with him funded by the NEA (U.S.), the Canadian Arts Council, as well as Arts Councils of numerous European countries. In 1989, he founded the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ), an organization dedicated to networking educators and students from international jazz schools through periodic meetings, exchange programs and newsletters. Liebman presently serves as the Artistic Director of the IASJ. He scored music for the JazzEx Ballet Company in the Netherlands in the early 1990s and Ocean of Light for Katrina and the Tsunami tragedies in 2006. Currently, Liebman is the Artist in Residence at the Manhattan School of Music

Liebman and musicologist Lewis Porter teamed up to develop What It Is: The Life of a Jazz Artist, Liebman’s biography. Released in March 2012, the book was well received by jazz critics.

Master of Ceremonies: Dr. Neil Wetzel

Dr. Neil Wetzel is Associate Professor of Music at Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) where he teaches saxophone and is Director of Jazz Studies. Having earned both a BM (Jazz Perf.) and MAT degrees from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In 2007 he completed the EdD program at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. His dissertation focused on teaching jazz improvisation. As founder and music director of Moravian College’s summer music camp, July Jazz Getaway, Mr. Wetzel has worked and played with Clark Terry, Al Grey, Terrell Stafford, Milt Grayson, Stanley Turrentine, and Bobby Watson. He has backed many great performers including Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Bob Hope, Johnny Mathis, Bernadette Peters, the Temptations and the Four Tops. He has recorded with the Philly Pops Orchestra and singer Patti Page in Carnegie Hall; this CD won the 1999 Grammy for best Pop Traditional Performance. He can also be heard on four CD’s with jazz pianist Eric Mintel: Live, Hopscotch, Dynamo and Four on the Floor. Mr. Wetzel has also played and taught at the Lana Jazz Festival in Lana, Italy as well as the Karel Velebny Jazz Workshop in Frydlant, Czech Republic. He is on the advisory board of the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective and the chair of their education committee.

His latest CD project “Cowboys and Capes” was just released.

Awards Presenter: Alan Gaumer

Awards presenter: Alan Gaumer has been playing trumpet since 1958. As a young trumpeter he appeared on the national television show the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. As featured Jazz trumpeter in the US Navy Show Band, he performed in over 70 countries throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.

He is currently in his twenty third year as jazz trumpet artist/lecturer at

PA Jazz focuses on the musical communication that is at the core of jazz. Jazz is an expression of individuality and the spontaneous artistic language spoken within the context of a democratic framework. We are cognizant that jazz performers and students draw upon multiple educational and social disciplines to simultaneously interact in a manner that uniquely ties together many educational disciplines and learning..

Former, and one current (trumpet & jazz “improv”) students, have won positions in the prestigious Pennsylvania State High School Jazz Band.-trumpet section. Alan regularly preforms with several ensembles including, the Quintet- Co-op Bop, in duet with Robin Bryan (Body and Soul) and as a member of the trumpet section of the Deer Head Inn- COTA All-Stars Big Band. He also appears with the Moravian College Faculty Jazz Quintet and continues to free-lance in a variety of genres.

Alan is the founder and Artistic Director of the Lehigh Valley based non-profit organization: The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective. Its mission is to educate and expose community members of all ages to the richness, the history, and the diversity of American jazz. www.pajazzcollective.org
