— Distinguished Judges —Patrick Dorian

Patrick Dorian, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music, was a member of the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania Music Department from 1987 through 2013. In 2010, he was awarded the highest faculty honor, the preeminent rank of Distinguished Professor of Music. He taught courses in jazz studies and film music and was the liaison to the Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection. He is the author and reviewer of many professional journal articles, chapters in several books, and CD insert booklets.

Professor Dorian’s long-time experience as a concert band and jazz ensemble director make him a sought-after evaluator and adjudicator at many festivals. His biography is included in Trumpet Greats: A Biographical Dictionary by David R. Hickman et al. (2013). It outlines Professor Dorian’s accomplished teaching career, in addition to his performing and recording careers, especially as a long-time member of the Phil Woods Big Band, the David Liebman Big Band directed by Gunnar Mossblad, the Jazz Artists Repertory Orchestra (JARO), and the Water Gap Brass. He has toured internationally, with performances at major jazz festivals, jazz clubs, and concert halls.

Professor Dorian performed on two Grammy-nominated CDs (Celebration!, 1997, and Beyond the Line, 2003). He also performed on the David Liebman Big Band (DLBB) DVD and CD LIVE . . . As Always (2011). Recently released recordings include New Celebration by Phil Woods and the COTA Festival Orchestra, Tomorrow’s Expectations by the DLBB, and A Tribute to Wayne Shorter by the DLBB. He has recently performed with The Temptations, The Four Freshmen, and the national tour of Cathy Rigby Is Peter Pan.

In June 2007, Professor Dorian was presented with the Great Teacher Award by the ESU Alumni Association. In October 2007, he was inducted into the East Stroudsburg Area School District Music Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the Fred Waring Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts and the Community. Professor Dorian holds degrees from Northwestern University (MM Performance) and Ithaca College (BM Performance and Music Education) and taught instrumental music in public schools for 14 years.

Bill Goodwin

An almost completely self-taught drummer, Bill attributes his early interest in the drums to Shelly Manne’s playing on the movie soundtrack of “The Man with the Golden Arm.” Before that he had taken piano lessons and studied the tenor saxophone. His father’s extensive record collection gave him the opportunity to hear and learn songs, and he still hears the form of the music first. From 1959 to the present, Goodwin has been a professional drummer, playing with the likes of Bill Evans, Dexter Gordon, Art Pepper, Jim Hall, George Shearing and Bobby Hutcherson, and singers such as June Christy, Joe Williams, Roseanna Vitro, Tony Bennett and Manhattan Transfer. The drum chair with Gary Burton brought him to the East Coast in 1969. After a three year stint with Burton’s group Bill settled down in an old farmhouse in the Poconos and worked the resorts. It was there that he and bassist Steve Gilmore became a team. Goodwin, like Gilmore, is a charter member of The Phil Woods Quartet (now Quintet), joining at it’s inception in February 1974.

Phil Woods says, “Bill is the magic ingredient in our all acoustic group. He is one of the masters who plays the song, not just the time. He shades and tints beautifully. He plays the music.”

Bill Goodwin has produced all of the The Phil Woods Quartet/Quintet and Little Big Band recordings since 1980 including the Grammy Award winning albums MORE LIVE (Adelphi), AT THE VANGUARD (Antilles) and the 1992 Grammy nominee ALL BIRD’S CHILDREN (Concord Jazz), as well as THE PHIL WOODS QUINTET MEETS DIZZY GILLESPIE on Timeless Records and FLOWERS FOR HODGES by Phil Woods and Jim McNeely duo. He has also produced several Tom Harrell recordings and was Omnisound’s main producer of jazz product including: PHIL WOODS/LEW TABACKIN and Dave Frishberg’s SONGBOOKS, VOLUME I and VOLUME II. His most recently released production efforts are Keith Jarrett’s LIVE AT THE DEER HEAD for ECM Records, and THE PHIL WOODS QUARTET/QUINTET 20TH ANNIVERSARY ALBUM for Mosaic, Phil Woods’ ASTOR & ELIS for Chesky Records and the Quintet’s MILE HIGH JAZZ for Concord Jazz.

Rob Stoneback

Rob Stoneback is the leader, featured trombonist, and chief arranger of the Rob Stoneback Big Band. Rob has played trombone for over 50 years and has been a big band leader for over 36 years.

Besides playing with the Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey, and Harry James Orchestras, Rob has performed with many stars of the entertainment world, including Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, The Manhattan Transfer, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra Jr., Olivia Newton-John, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Lou Rawls, Joan Rivers, Bob Newhart, Rosemary Clooney, Jack Jones, Wayne Newton, Bobby Rydell, Sonny and Cher, Don Rickles, and Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.

In the world of jazz, Rob has taken the stage with Clark Terry, Stanley Turrentine, Bill Watrous, Bobby Watson, Diane Schuur, Bernard Purdie, David “Fathead” Newman, Urbie Green, Wycliffe Gordon, Rufus Reid, Bobby Sanabria, David Sanchez, and Al Grey.

The Rob Stoneback Big Band’s recording Mad to the Bone features the legendary trombonist Bill Watrous. Bill Watrous said the Rob Stoneback Big Band is “one of the finest bands I’ve ever played with.” Check out Rob’s website at robstonebackbigband.com. Previous recordings by Rob and the guys are Up Front (1983), Traditions (1990), and Caught in the Web (1997). In 2013, Rob released a combo album, Bare Bones, that features himself, Bill Watrous, and fellow Lehigh Valleyites, Craig Kastelnik, and Gary Rissmiller.

In May 2007, the Rob Stoneback Big Band recorded with Simone, Nina Simone’s daughter. With her Rob and his band performed at Lincoln Center, the Berks Jazz Festival, The World Café, and the Whitaker Center. As Simone’s musical director, Rob also played at the Telluride Jazz Festival, the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival, the Jazz and Ribs Festival, and at other venues in Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Mr. Stoneback was a clinician at the Eastern Trombone Workshop at Ft. Myer, Virginia in 2008.

— Artists of the Year —June Thomas

June Thomas is a multikeyboardist/vocalist who has played with regional jazz, blues, & pop artists for over twenty five years including Fraser Thomas Duo, Wooden Ships CSN Tribute, Maria Woodford, PF & the Flyers, Rissmiller/Thomas jazz group and many others. She has completed her MM in Jazz Studies at the University of the Arts as well as Level I of Somatic Voicework with Jeanette LoVetri.

June has performed with renowned jazz artists such as: Jimmy Heath, Dave Liebman, Phil Woods, George Young, Bill Goodwin, Phil Markowitz, Duane Eubanks, John Swana. Bootsie Barnes, and others. She has opened for Joe Henderson, Natalie Cole and Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd. She and has contributed background vocals to jazz legend Bob Dorough’s cd release “Duets” , recorded at Red Rock Studios (2012).

She has acted as musical director for many regional theater companies & has done vocal overdubs for Miramax movies Far East movie release “City on Fire” (2001). June was a house studio musician for Menagerie Productions, Saylorsburg, PA (1990--2005) and has toured with the Bobby Vinton Show as keyboardist/vocalist(1990s),

June has the distinction of winning Best Pianist at the Lehigh Valley Music Awards (2013-2015) . As a jazz piano and voice teacher, Ms. Thomas has been able to translate her love of music to others while amassing a supportive following. She is sought after by recording artists and venues as a well-rounded, diverse keyboardist and vocalist and

workshop facilitator and as a composer/arranger .

She currently teaches jazz voice & piano at Muhlenberg College, is a member of the PA Jazz Collective, & is in the process of arranging & recording an album of her original Indo-jazz/pop material.

Master of Ceremonies: Dr. Neil Wetzel

Dr. Neil Wetzel is Associate Professor of Music at Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) where he teaches saxophone and is Director of Jazz Studies. Having earned both a BM (Jazz Perf.) and MAT degrees from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In 2007 he completed the EdD program at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. His dissertation focused on teaching jazz improvisation. As founder and music director of Moravian College’s summer music camp, July Jazz Getaway, Mr. Wetzel has worked and played with Clark Terry, Al Grey, Terrell Stafford, Milt Grayson, Stanley Turrentine, and Bobby Watson. He has backed many great performers including Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Bob Hope, Johnny Mathis, Bernadette Peters, the Temptations and the Four Tops. He has recorded with the Philly Pops Orchestra and singer Patti Page in Carnegie Hall; this CD won the 1999 Grammy for best Pop Traditional Performance. He can also be heard on four CD’s with jazz pianist Eric Mintel: Live, Hopscotch, Dynamo and Four on the Floor. Mr. Wetzel has also played and taught at the Lana Jazz Festival in Lana, Italy as well as the Karel Velebny Jazz Workshop in Frydlant, Czech Republic. He is on the advisory board of the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective and the chair of their education committee.

His latest CD project “Cowboys and Capes” was just released.

— Lifetime Achievement —Bob Dorough

BOB DOROUGH, born in Arkansas and “raised”in Texas, immediately fell in love with music upon joining the Plainview Texas High School Band. He served three years in a Special Services Army Band Unit, gaining much professional experience as arranger, clarinetist, saxophonist, pianist, and entertainer (1943-45).

After earning a Bachelor Of Music degree at the University of North Texas (1949), he made a bee-line for New York City where he took classes at Columbia University and immersed himself in the volatile jazz scene then taking place there -the BeBop revolution. In 1952 he turned his back on the academic scene to devote himself to jazz performance, specializing in piano/vocals. After years of accompanying, conducting, arranging, and playing, he made his first recording as a leader (1956) for the Bethlehem label....DEVIL MAY CARE, having written the title tune three years earlier. He is known as “the only singer to record with Miles Davis”. While this may not be 100% true, he did record two vocals with Davis, in 1962, “Nothing Like You” and “Blue Xmas,” both of which he composed. Davis also recorded an instrumental version of Bob’s classic song, “Devil May Care,” that same year.

In 1971 he received a commission to “set the multiplication tables to music.” This led to a small industry, being the beginning of ABC-TV’s SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK, Saturday morning cartoons that entertained and instructed unsuspecting children during the years 1973-1985. The impact of this media exposure was unpredictably immense. The show came back for another five years in the 90’s and is now enjoying its 40th anniversary with a DVD edition of the entire, five-subject series, for which Dorough worked as the Musical Director.

In 1995 he signed a contract with the prestigious jazz label - Blue Note Records - and has done three CDs for them (“Right On My Way Home,” “Too Much Coffee Man” and “Who’s On First”).

Now residing in Pennsylvania, he has received honors from that state (the Governor’s Artist of the Year Award) and from his native state (the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame.) Currently recording on Arbors, Candid and his own label, Bob Dorough continues to perform, often for children too, in Jazz Clubs and Schools, wherever he can.

Ken Brader

Ken Brader, taught by his grandfather, started playing trumpet at the age of four. He was third chair in Eastern District Band as a seventh grader, beaten by only two high school seniors, and first chair in Eastern District Band as an 8th grader. As an 8th grader he joined the “Tijuana Brats” as lead trumpet, performing in 20 states and on national TV on the “Tonight Show” and “The Mike Douglas Show”. While a high school student he studied with Raymond Crisara - lead trumpet ABC staff orchestra in NYC. Ken attended the Eastman School of Music where he graduated with distinction. While still a senior at Eastman he performed with Chuck Mangione’s professional touring orchestra, including concerts at Carnegie Hall and Central Park. Ken has performed in 48 of the United States and 22 countries around the world, including 12 tours of Europe as lead trumpet player. He has played extensively as lead trumpet and featured soloist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, including numerous recordings. Ken was the principal trumpet player for the Philly Pops Orchestra for twenty years. He has played principal trumpet for the Philadelphia Boys Choir. He has also been principal trumpet with The Strauss Orchestra of America including concerts at Lincoln Center in New York City and The Kennedy Center in Washington , D.C. Ken was the lead trumpet player on the Patti Page album “Live At Carnegie Hall - The 50th Anniversary Concert” that won a Grammy award. He currently is the Trumpet Instructor at Lafayette College where he has taught for twenty years. Ken’s private trumpet students have achieved numerous honors including 1st chair NJ All-State Band, 1st chair PA All-State Band, lead trumpet PA All-State Jazz Band (including one year when all four trumpets were his students) and three different students have been lead trumpet in All-East Jazz Band - a 12 state area. His private trombone students have been in NJ All-State Band, 1st chair in Eastern District Band, and lead trombone in PA All-State Jazz Band.

Awards Presenter - Dave Roth, President PJC

David Roth performs in a wide variety of both of classical and jazz settings. He holds both BA and BM degrees from Moravian College, and he has earned a Masters degree in classical piano performance from the University of Northern Colorado. David has performed with many well-known jazz musicians including Steve Gilmore, Glenn Davis, Paul Rostock, Larry Mckenna, Warren Vache Jr., Bill Goodwin, and Terell Stafford. In the commercial music field, David has done keyboard work for Regis Philbin and Michael Amante, and he had given many live performances on radio and television. Under the direction of composer Sean O’Boyle, David recorded the piano music sound track for the Film, Damn Fine Dining starring David MacLean and Sam Dugmore. David is the creator of the Moravian College Summer Youth Jazz Camp that includes students grades 8-12. David also conceived and led the development of the strategic education alliance between MTNA and the International Association for Jazz Education. He is a co-author of the MTNA/IAJE Jazz Studies Guide that includes a forward by Dave Brubeck. David created two community concert programs, Peak View Jazz, in Colorado, and Art’s in Your Backyard, in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. www.rothpiano.com
