PAGE 2 PA SERVICES NEWS

For our summer issue we are highlighting PA student Jessica Sarkis from the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Jessica recently completed a rotation in Family Prac-tice in Wooster. Jessica graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University in Nutrition and a minor in Chemistry. She chose this degree because it would allow her to continue her work in community service which has become an integral part of her life. Her interest and passion for medicine, specifically the health sciences, was sparked while volunteering and shadowing through-out high school and college. She worked on research projects as part of her nutrition de-gree and she became a certified nurse’s aide. Her older sister Daad, who graduated from PA school last year and works at the CC, has been “the greatest influence on my interest in pursuing a career as a PA," Jessi-ca says. "She brought to light the many re-warding and challenging aspects the come along with being a PA and gave me the infor-mation I needed to determine that this career choice is a perfect fit for me.” She chose the PA program at the University of St. Francis due to their unique PBL curric-ulum, which strives to develop critical think-ing, clinical skills, and confidence in their stu-dents while cultivating teamwork and giving back to the community. St. Francis gradu-ates excellent PAs. When asked about an area of specialization, Jessica says that she loves caring for chil-dren; as a result, she has a strong interest in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. She hopes to gain experience in primary care or inpatient medicine, which would allow her to expand her knowledge and optimize her skills.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Jessica Sarkis, PA Student

An experience that truly stands out for Jessica while rotating was the ability to translate in Ara-bic, which allowed her to communicate with a family regarding their child. She states “how sincerely grateful they were to finally be able to communicate fully in regards to their child’s health”. Jessica says that while she often gets caught up in the hustle and bustle of graduate school and rotations, this opportunity to help a family in this unique way made her feel truly blessed and thankful. She says that moments such as this help her remember what all the hard work is for. Jessica is one of 4 children born to parents of Syrian descent. She enjoys being with people and is intrigued by different cultures. Jessica says the best way to get to know someone is to share a meal with them. "It’s no wonder I consider myself a foodie," she remarks. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family and being out on Lake Erie. Her other interests include a flair for the theatre and cine-ma. Her school clinical coordinator states, “Jessica is a hard worker, is attentive to detail and is always conscientious to question and work through any discrepancies she discov-ers. Preceptors have complimented her on her eagerness to learn, her excellent communica-tion skills, and the ability to adapt quickly to new environments. We are proud of her ac-complishments and wish her well as she be-gins her career in the fall.” We wish her the best as she looks forward to graduation in August.

Our highlighted preceptor this quarter is Greg Bar-ton. Greg is a PA at Wooster Family Health Center and has been working at Cleveland Clinic for 18 years. He works primarily in Family Practice and Urgent Care

but has also worked periodically to help the hospitalist and ambulatory surgery ser-vices. A special project Greg is currently working on is the development of a presen-tation on responsible antibiotic use for the Urgent Care setting.

Prior to PA school Greg was an RN at Akron General in the ICU,CCU, and Cardiovascu-lar Surgery. He first noticed PAs at Akron and saw the role as desirable and thought the profession had promising advance-ment. Greg then attended and graduated from the Tri-C program and has been a PA now for 24 years.

Greg has been precepting for 20 of the 24 years that he has been a PA and currently teaches 2-4 students every year. Greg jok-ingly recalls that before he decided to be-come a preceptor he was nervous that the students might be smarter than him. Greg says periodically it is difficult to manage time between patient care and discussion and education of the students. His students say he does extremely well and they always give him great reviews. When asked what he thought was the most rewarding thing about precepting he explained, “I have en-joyed every student, getting to know them, creating friendships and work relationships.

It is very satisfying to see new professionals developing and play a role in shaping how they approach patients.”

Greg has been happily married for 31 years and has 5 adult children and 3 grandchildren with 2 more on the way. Faith is a central component in his life and he is very involved in his church in worship and spiritual renew-al. He has recently recorded his first album of original music. Greg also finds time to paint with oils and water color, exercises regularly, hikes, and landscapes.

PA Services thanks Greg for all his dedica-tion to teaching our next generation of pro-viders.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

The Cleveland Clinic Center for Health Science Education gives

out 5 awards annually to the Outstanding Health Sciences Educa-

tors of the year. This year there were 27 nominees from 15 differ-

ent disciplines. Among the exemplary award winners was our

own Yosef Robbins, PA-C. Yosef is a long-standing inter-

professional educator and encourages the development of all

those around him. He consistently and enthusiastically precepts

students of all kinds including PA students, nursing students, fel-

lows, residents, and medical students. He leads the HVI PAs by

example on the importance of educating, as his team takes 11-13

PA students every year in addition to undergraduate shadow stu-

dents. He also serves as an integral member of the PA Preceptor

Council and this year served as the moderator for the PA Student

Challenge Bowl.

Please join me in congratulating Yosef on his exemplary role in

educating our future generation of providers.
