PA TY Honoring
DAN COLEN and CHRIS SALGARDO
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9
A MESSAGE FROM DIANE BROWN
FOUNDER AND PRES IDENT, RX ART
RxArt is proud to honor KAWS tonight and celebrate his tremendous generos-
ity, which enables us to continue transforming pediatric hospital facilities into
comforting and engaging spaces.
We have recently completed an exciting project with RxArt supporter and
board member, Rob Pruitt at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children in Bayside, NY.
Rob brilliantly transformed his iconic images of zebras and pandas, integrat-
ing orbs of brilliant color, into a dry erase wall for their pediatric patients. St.
Mary’s is the oldest children’s hospital in New York, providing care for children
with special needs and life-limiting conditions. It is New York City’s only state-
of-the-art post-acute care facility for children.
Assume Vivid Astro Focus recently comleted a dynamic installation, bursting
with color, at The Special Children’s Center in Lakewood, New Jersey. The
installation transformed the environment into one that inspires creativity and
joyful exuberance.
My warmest thanks to our board of directors and our advisory board for their
loyalty and boundless enthusiasm. Their expertise, judgment, and dedication
has been and continues to be essential to our accomplishments.
I wish I could thank every individual who has helped us bring fine art to health-
care facilities. First and foremost I would like to acknowledge the artists who
have so generously collaborated with us on our hospital projects, coloring
books and puzzles, as well as all of those who have supported our auctions.
We are so proud to have worked with each of you.
Very special thanks to Jillian Siegel, Olivia Marciano, Albert Fis and Gabi Perez
for their dedication to the RxArt team. Thank you for your creative opinions,
your determination, and your sense of humor when it is most needed. I would
also like to thank Sam Falls for creating such an exciting and beautiful print
for our VIP patrons, and all the curators and artists who help to make RxArt’s
PARTY a great success.
Sincere thanks and best wishes,
RxArt is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help children heal through the
extraordinary power of visual art. We commission exceptional contemporary artists
to transform sterile healthcare facilities into engaging and inspiring environments
full of beauty, humor and comfort.
Every RxArt Project is produced at no cost to the hospitals and provides every artist
with an honorarium and the chance to transform the lives of children as they heal.

Throughout his career, Ricci Albenda (b. 1966) has experimented with text as a visual, personal,
communal, and intellectual entity. Most of his text paintings adhere to the artist ’s “alphabetic
colorization system” called COLOR-IME-TRY, which methodically codes each letter according
to the color spectrum. His interest in architectural space and the experience of moving through
it carries over into these optical text pieces comprised of colored lettering, which seem to float
in the pictorial space of the canvas.
Albenda’s work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Whitney
Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; among others.
Albenda has exhibited extensively, in the United States and abroad, in museums, including the
Whitney Museum of American Art (2015), Guggenheim Museum (2010, 2007), Tel Aviv Museum
of Art (2008), and The Museum of Modern Art (2001-2002). Public commissions include works for
the Cowboys Stadium, Dallas (2005) and Penny Pritzker, Hyatt Center, Chicago (2005). The artist
was born in Brooklyn, NY and l ives and works in New York.
This work is not intended to be framed. It has a backing with a wire loop and hangs on a screw.

Jef f Koons (b. 1955) is one of the most famous American artists l iving today. Koons is widely
known for his iconic sculptures Rabbit and Balloon Dog as well as his monumental f loral works
Puppy and Split-Rocker. Working with everyday objects, his oeuvre revolves around themes of
sel f-acceptance and transcendence.
Since his f i rst solo exhibition in 1980, Koons’s work has been shown in major galleries and
institutions throughout the world. His work was the subject of a large exhibition organized by
the Whitney Museum of American Art (2014), which traveled to the Centre Pompidou, Paris
(2014-15) and the Guggenheim Bilbao (2015). A solo exhibition of new work was recently on
view at Gagosian, Beverly Hil ls in 2017. Koons studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in
Baltimore and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He received a BFA from the Maryland
Institute College of Art in 1976. Koons l ives and works in New York City.

Paul McCarthy (b. 1945) is one of the most important and influential contemporary American
artists. He is known for challenging, visceral work in a variety of mediums—from performance,
photography, video and installation, to sculpture, drawing and painting—and scales ranging
from tiny to monumental. Playing on popular i l lusions, delusions and cultural myths, his work
has often incorporated obsessive activit ies and challenged expected physical orientation.
McCarthy has shown at Hauser & Wir th locations worldwide, the Park Avenue Armory, Whitney
Museum of American Art, Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm,
Sweden, among many others. He was born in Salt Lake City, UT and l ives and works in Los
Angeles.

José Parlá (b. 1973) is known for his large-scale wall murals —color ful, abstract paintings that
represent what the artist has called the texture of memory. Parlá’s works recall a type of pseudo-
script, a call igraphy that cannot be read, but nonetheless communicates meaning through its
gestural, color ful articulation. Parlá created the massive mural in the lobby of One World Trade
Center, measuring 15 feet high by 90 feet long. He has exhibited at the Brooklyn Academy of
Music; The Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, NY; National YoungArts Foundation, Miami, FL;
The Havana Biennial, Havana, Cuba, among others. His work is included in the collections of
the National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana; the Brit ish Museum, London; the Burger Collection,
Hong Kong; the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buf falo, NY; and POLA Museum of Art, Hakone, Japan.

Mimmo Paladino (b. 1948) is an Italian sculptor, painter, and printmaker who has long
been associated with the development of the Transavanguardia (“beyond the avant-
garde”) movement, a form of Neo-Expressionism. Paladino’s style arose from his method of
borrowing from an array of past artist ic t raditions and iconographies, where he references
ancient Egyptian art, African cave painting, Gothic sculpture, fourteenth century
frescoes of Florence, and classical antiquity. In Testimoni, Paladino draws inspiration
from both the ancient and the modern. Cast in l imestone, Paladino’s sculptures take
on the traditional sculptural human figure, but with graceful elongation and curvature.
More recently, Paladino gained recognition for his large-scale public installations, including
The Salt Mountain (2010), and his collaboration with Brian Eno to create many sound
and visual art pieces. He has exhibited worldwide, including the Tate Modern in London.

Anthony Pearson (b. 1969) takes photography as his point of departure, t ranslating the
vocabulary of that medium into other material, l ike plaster and bronze. Light is a central concern
for Pearson, and he calls attention to it by playing with its ambient ef fects— reflection, shadow,
i l lumination. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at David Kordansky Gallery, Los
Angeles (2017); Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York (2015); Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago,
IL (2014); and the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis (2012). Group exhibitions include the
Drawing Room, London (2017); Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles (2016-17, 2014);
and deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA (2012). Pearson l ives and works in Los

Richard Prince (b. 1949) is a painter and photographer l iving and working in New York City. Prince
is best known for his use of appropriation, and re-photography. Most recognizably, his Untitled
(Cowboy), a “re-photograph” that sold for more than $1 mil l ion at auction in 2005, caught Prince
in the middle of scandal as he appropriated the image from another photographer without their
consent. Scandal aside, he remains a pioneer in encouraging the accessibil i ty of art.
Prince has been shown at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Rubell Family
Collection, Miami; The Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz, Austria; Picasso Museum, Malaga, Spain;
La Case D’Arte, Milan, Italy; Brant Foundation Art Study Center, Greenwich; The FLAG Art

Ursula von Rydingsvard is best known for creating large-scale sculpture. The public space
is particularly resonant for her, and much of her sculpture is exhibited outdoors in places
accessible to an audience that is not necessari ly seeking art. Melancholy and vulnerabil ity
are deeply embedded in her work, carrying in them the struggle of her childhood: born in
1942 in Germany, her family was forced to l ive between refugee camps unti l their move to
the United States in 1950. Her work, which often includes strong wooden elements, alludes
to the labor that characterized her upbringing both through material and construction.
Ursula von Rydingsvard’s work is represented in the permanent collections of over 30
museums, including: The Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Walker
Art Center, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Storm King Art Center, Detroit Institute of Arts, San
Francisco Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art. She has received two grants from
the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Skowhegan Medal for
Sculpture, three awards from the American section of the International Association of Art
Crit ics, the International Sculpture Center Li fetime Achievement Award, and is a member of
the American Academy of Arts & Letters. von Rydingsvard wil l be the focus of a forthcoming
exhibition of works at the Fabric Workshop and Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of
Art in 2018.
