"Pa'akai a Malamalama" (Salt and Light) - Reflections From the Dean

Christmastide & The Feast of Epiphany

Please join us to transition from Christmas to Epiphany

Choral Evensong on Monday, January 5, at 5:30 pm for the Eve of the Epiphany

Tuesday, January 6, at 5:30 pm

Choral Holy Eucharist for The Feast of the Epiphany

Writing this on the 6th Day of Christmas, I don't have "six geese a - laying" to offer you, but I do have this poem by one of my heroes to offer.

Christmas is waiting to be born in you and me.

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone,

When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock,

The work of Christmas begins:

To find the lost,

To heal the broken, To feed the hungry,

To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations,

To bring peace among people, To make music in the heart.

("Christmas Is Waiting to be Born" by The Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman, from The Mood of Christmas & Other Celebrations, 1985)

Christmastide & The Feast of Epiphany – Continued from prior page

So as we move through these remaining days of Christmas, let us take Thurman's words to heart and into our actions. His words are a reminder that Christmas is not a one-day event but a short season, and leads us into another season in the Church year where we also seek to celebrate Christ being present in the world - Epiphany. Both seasons invite us to manifest Christ in the world. The Feast of the Epiphany The Feast of the Epiphany is the day after the 12th Night of Christmas. It inaugurates the Season of Epiphany as the third season of the church year (following Advent and Christmas). The word means making God manifest. This season begins on the Day of the Epiphany (January 6th) and lasts until Ash Wednesday at the beginning of Lent. It is the church's response to God's Christmas. The biblical theme is first noted in the Nativity Story of The Magi who journeyed far to worship Jesus at Bethlehem. Another theme of Epiphany is Baptism, beginning with the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord. A similar idea is reflected by the response of the magi who journeyed far to worship Jesus at Bethlehem. The liturgical color used on vestments is generally green to represent the green things of God's earth and refers to growth of the spirit of God within us in response to His coming at Christmastide. Next week, we at the Cathedral will have two opportunities to celebrate the Epiphany. First, on Monday, January 5, at 5:30 pm, we shall have Choral Evensong for the Eve of the Epiphany. Please join us at this celebration of the 12th Night. Then on Tuesday, January 6th, at5:30 pm, we shall celebrate Epiphany with a Choral Holy Eucharist. We hope many of you can join us for at least one, if not both services. Finally, as we bid farewell to 2014, I am grateful for all of you for what you have done for our Cathedral in so many ways this past year. It is my sincere hope that this new year of 2015 shall be a blessed and joyful year for all of you. Mahalo Nui Loa Walter+

OUTREACH MINISTRY We have a wonderful outreach ministry, started just 10 months ago, that hands out sandwiches, fruit, and bottled water to our homeless neighbors downtown and in our Cathedral area. At 12:15 pm, after the 10:30 am service, or alternately at 4:00 pm each Sunday, a group from The Cathedral of St. Andrew distributes the food. The visits provide a connection and sense of caring to both our friends receiving the food and our volunteers. If you would like to join the "walkers," please contact Joyce Kato at [email protected]. Sandwich makers are also needed. Please contact Ann Reimers at [email protected]. If you would like to help with the purchasing of groceries, please contact Mother Susan at [email protected].

We've requested feedback, which will share with you soon.

Spiritual Growth Group for 2015 - "Falling Upward," by Richard Rohr Please join us on the third Tuesday each month from 4:45 to 6:30 pm in the Von Holt Room Our 2015 theme is Spiritually for the Two Halves of Life, based on Richard Rohr's best seller, "Falling Upward." Understanding the spiritual aspects of aging is as important as appreciating the systems and biological processes that age us. Rohr provides a guide to what he calls the "further journey," a voyage into the mystery and beauty of healthy spiritual maturity (Mahmet Oz, M.D., host of Dr. Oz Show); this is our challenge for 2015. Thirteen succinct chapters with an accompanying companion journal will take us through personal reflections, journaling and experiential exercises to help us clarify and communicate our spiritual practice, an important part of spiritual growth and insight. Won't you join us, if you have not yet done so with our 2014 Joyce Rupp series, on this self-reflection of our outer and inner lives? Our practice is to arrive 15 minutes early to center ourselves in quiet prayer and meditation then share the next 1.5 comfortable hours in speaking and listening from our hearts about the month's topic. You may order Richard Rohr's book and journal in advance through Amazon or you may email [email protected] to arrange a prepaid group order; the book is $12 and the journal is $13, for a total $25, free shipping. Please make checks to The Cathedral of St. Andrew; memo line is R. Rohr Book Order. Please place your order as soon as possible.

Any questions? Feel free to ask the Rev. Susan Sowers at [email protected].

Adult Christian Formation Hour Sundays, 9:20 - 10:10 am, The Von Holt Room Advent marks the beginning of the Liturgical Year. Join us for 50 minutes between services for some important conversations about who we are "In Christ." Christmas 2 (Jan. 4th) - Introduction to Becoming the Story we Tell. Come hear the Rev. Dan Benedict, John Condrey, your clergy, and the Emmaus Journey Team cast a vision on how we might live out our Baptismal Life--and truly become disciples of Christ for the world.

Social Justice Ministry - An Update Thanks to the efforts of all our organizers and volunteers, we have been very successful in increasing the aide and happiness in the Kakaako houseless community. We organized the first-ever largest social services meet-and-greet with residents thanks to Sen. Susie Chun-Oakland. We also helped coordinate last week's very successful Share the Merry event, captured by KHON, bringing together over 30 local businesses and nonprofits.

Continued from prior page Along with IN THE STREETS, we helped several houseless families get the health care they needed. Raina, who runs that group, was able to help a youth get to an emergency center to discover, in the knick of time, a potentially serious condition which may have led to a life-threatening kidney infection.

On December 29, the Amnesty International of Honolulu chapter, led by Beatriz Cantelmo organized a fun-filled kids movie night which lightened up all the keiki, held at the Protohub. They also received complimentary sun-safety hats from HiSky Hats, founded by the brave Skylar Soares, beneficiary of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This is the kind of work we do, voluntarily for our less fortunate sisters and brothers.

Please join us for our next very important Organizers and Volunteers Meeting: WHEN: Monday, January 5, 2015 at 5:30 pm

WHERE: The Cathedral of St. Andrew (NOT the Priory School), 2nd Floor Conference Room in the Office Building, Diamond head side of the Cathedral, connected to Parke Chapel.

ADDRESS/MAP: 229 Queen Emma Square (park on the Beretania side of the Church on Beretania and Alakea) MAP: http://bit.ly/1zz6cmc FREE PARKING

RSVP by January 3, 2015 to Kathy Xian, Chair, Social Justice Ministry, [email protected] We will be discussing our next event, solutions to poverty, and our new Adopt-A-Family Program.

Godly Play The Children's Gathering on the Square, Sundays, 9:00 - 10:00 am, The Loft at St. Peter's Church The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St. Peter's Church, from 9:00 to 10:00 am on Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 4th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist as "helpers" or participate in "The ROCK" (Relationships, Outreach, Christ & Kids) program located in the Sun/Son room at St. Peter's. January 4. Epiphany. Epiphany is a Greek word that means "showing forth." The date of its celebration is January 6th. It was originally concerned with the commemoration of the Baptism of the adult Christ and later became associated with the Magi, an emphasis of the Latin Church of the West. Today it is often thought of as the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. We will review the events we have learned during the waiting time of Advent and the lesson will conclude with the emphasis of the presence of Christ yesterday and today. January 11. Parable of the Good Shepherd. Parables are the closest thing we have to the actual words of Jesus. We treat these stories with great respect and wonder. Today we hear the Parable of the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd knows each of his sheep by name and they know the sound of his voice. While he shows the sheep the way to the good, green grass and the cool, clear water, he also goes wherever he needs to when they are in danger.
