The AWD Alliance, the consortium of ASC, Raytheon and the
Department of Defence which is building Australia’s three Hobart class Air Warfare Destroyers, says it has made considerable progress this year on Australia’s largest shipbuilding program.
The first ship in class, the
future HMAS Hobart (below), was launched into the water at the Techport Australia shipyard in Adelaide in May, a significant milestone for the program. Work on the first AWD is now nearing 90 per cent complete and is focused on ship completion and system commissioning, with combat system light off activities due

Defence Minister wants to “maximise” industry opportunities
Senator Marise Payne has used one of her first major speeches as Defence Minister to highlight the importance of Australian
industry in developing and delivering “innovative” defence capabilities.
Senator Payne told a lunch for senior defence and industry figures during Pacific 2015 on Wednesday: “The government very strongly supports the principle that we should maximise the opportunities for Australian industries to participate in defence acquisition and sustainment.
“We are also strongly committed to Australian industry that can deliver defence capability that is internationally cost competitive.”
The Minister pointed to Monday’s announcement of the acquisition of 1,100 Hawkei light protected mobility vehicles for the Army to be built by Thales Australia in Bendigo, Victoria as “a great example of how defence and industry work together to deliver innovative and world class

PACIFIC 2015 SHOW DAILY DAY TWO WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 7 2015
THE MOST FORMIDABLE THING WE’VE BUILT FOR AUSTRALIA IS OUR CAPABILITY.Over the past 30 years we’ve been building and maintaining Australia’s frontline naval defence capabilities – the Collins Class submarines and the Hobart Class air warfare destroyers. With our world-class facilities, our highly skilled workforce and our diverse supply chain, ASC’s capability extends above the water, below the water and across the world.
With the federal government recently announcing the adoption of a continuous build strategy for
surface ships in Australia and with the Future Submarine competition in full swing, there has never been a more important time to bring together industry and decision makers.
That was the message from Teresa Gambaro MP, representing the new Minister for Defence, Senator Marise Payne, as she formally opened Pacific 2015 on Tuesday.
“With the arrival of the National Naval Enterprise, there has never been a greater period of relevance for this forum and for the inclusion of industry in discussions with the government,” the Member for Brisbane said.
“Pacific 2015 is a wonderful opportunity to enhance cooperation between navies whose ships operate together at sea and to develop close professional relationships ashore. The government supports Pacific 2015 and welcomes all of you who have come from trade and industry. We welcome delegates from Australia, across the region and across the world.”
Gambaro is the chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade and was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence from July 2004 to January 2006.
Under former prime minister Tony Abbott, the government announced in August that the Australian shipbuilding workforce would build the Future Frigates and Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Royal Australian Navy. The third part of the government’s Naval Shipbuilding Plan was to be based on the outcomes of the Future Submarine program’s competitive evaluation process.
