P E S M ’ S M I S S I O NThe Pacific Evangelical School of Ministry is a graduate school of theology within the evangelical, Wesleyan-Arminian tradition. The mission is to provide graduate-level, theological education for persons preparing for Christian service. While a key goal is to help The Evan-gelical Church in the preparation of its minis-ters, PESM is open to evangelicals from other denominations seeking graduate education for their call to ministry. PESM seeks to nurture the spiritual life of its students through the classes offered, through the mentoring program and the daily chapels. The desired outcome is people who are competently prepared to fulfill their calling and their role in ministering to the body of Christ.

R A T I O N A L EThe idea of The Pacific Evangelical School of Ministry was born from the prayers and deliberation of the Pacific Conference Board of Ministry. The initial discussion resulted from the Board’s role as a “gatekeeper” for the denomination. How best do we provide Chris-tian workers who know, adhere, preach, and teach faithfully the doctrine of The Evangelical Church? In the months which followed, the Board pursued meetings with Western Evan-gelical Seminary, the Annual Conference, and ministerial candidates. The result is an extended program of theological education designed to fulfill both the Conference Course of Study and the Alternate Graduate Level Study Program

(See ¶555.c.).

C O M M U N I T Y B U I L D I N GWith an intense program, community building is difficult. Consequently, enrollment in the degree program means the student will stay on campus. Chapel, colloquia times, lunches, and dinners serve as community building events. Participation is required.

S T U D E N T S E R V I C E SCOUNSELING All of the professors are available for student counseling. It is highly recommended that the student be in contact with his/her denomina-tional board dealing with ordination or certi-fication. This is vital for a place of service and ministry following graduation from PESM.

HEALTH CAREPESM does not offer any health care programs. The student is advised to maintain his/her health care though his/her current line of work or that of a spouse.

PLACEMENTThe student is strongly advised to be in contact with his/her denomina-tional board dealing with the placement of pastors. PESM will be happy to supply the student with references from the faculty.

HOUSINGIn light of the fact that students are resident for classes at PESM for only three or four days at a time, PESM does not have any permanent housing. PESM makes arrangements with a local motel for the students to stay in while attending classes. Students are required to stay at the motel during the class sessions.

MEALSThe noon meal is catered for the students and faculty. It is served in the Activity Center located at Valley View Evangelical Church.

Students can eat breakfast at the motel as it is included in the lodging fees. Students are on their own for the evening meal. There are several restaurants close to the motel.

BOOKSTOREPESM does not maintain a bookstore. The Student can often secure these books from the Christian Book Distributors (1-800-247-4784) www.christianbook.com or purchase them through your local Christian book store. Some students have purchased them through Amazon.com. The dean will supply the students with the syllabi by the first of August. This will show what books need to be secured for each class.

LIBRARYPESM maintains a library at the Valley View Evangelical Church site. There are currently 6,000 volumes in this library. The students can

check out books or search on line to learn what books are available. One can google Pacific Evangelical School of Ministry Library, click on “on-line catalog” or enter http://pesm.scoolaid.net.

CLASS ROOMSPESM has leased some rooms at the Valley View Evangelical Church for use as classrooms, chapel, and dining room. The classroom and dining room is located in the Activity Center, chapel is in the smaller chapel at Valley View.

FEES AND COSTSTuition for the ten semester hours per year is: $1,100.

Tuition for a three semester hour course is: $400.

Tuition for a one-and-a-half semester hour course is: $200.

Audit fees are 50% of normal class fees.

Housing costs $20 per night.

The noon meals cost $15 per meal.

The total cost for a year of study is:

During the year that the student graduates there is a $75 graduation fee.

Most students pay 25% of the schooling costs each session of school. If a student pays the full amount in September and then drops out after the start of school, he/she will be refunded for whatever sessions he/she did not attend.

PESM does not offer any financial aid. The student is advised to work with his/her denominational board of ministry as often they offer some assistance for study in preparation for ministry.

minimum of seven hours in colloquia each time they come for class.

M E N T O R I N GMentoring is a key component of community building and leadership development. Mentors must meet the following qualifications:

1. Have a sincere desire and interest in mentoring.2. Be an active practitioner (pastor, missionary), recommended by the student, approved by responsible person (Superin-tendent, Mission Director), and reported to the Board of Ministry of the Pacific Conference.3. Agree to meet with the mentoree ten times per year and to follow the mentoring guidelines which have been established.4. Be willing to mentor no more than two students per year.

G O V E R N A N C EThe Board of Ministry of the Pacific Confer-ence serves as the governing board. This Board determines policies, reviews curriculum, and approves faculty. The Board of Ministry has approved both the Student and Faculty Handbooks.

A T T E N D A N C EGiven the intensive nature of the courses both in content and class time, the student is expect-ed to attend every session.

In the event of an emergency, the student is responsible for contacting the professor(s). If the professor is unavailable, the student may contact the Dean or Registrar. The student is responsible for class content which he/she misses.

One unexcused absence will place the student on probation. Two unexcused absences will result in automatic dismissal.

L I B R A R YA core theological library of 6000 volumes has been collected in addition to appropriate software. The student will supplement these resources with regional libraries.

E T H I C A L B E H A V I O RSince this is a School of Ministry, students are expected to conduct themselves in the highest standard of ministry. See paragraph 591 of the 2006 Discipline of The Evangelical Church. Acceptance and enrollment in the school constitutes willing agreement by the student to abide by this Handbook and the other rules of the school. Violations of this standard such as lying, cheating and plagiarism, will result in suspension and probably dismissal. See Due Process, Section 4. Wise financial stewardship is a crucial area for the minister. Students are expected to keep their bills current.

First, the student is to privately discuss his concerns with the professor.

Second, if step one does not reach satisfactory resolution either the professor or the student may appeal to the Dean. The Dean will select one student and one faculty member to be on a panel he/she chairs.

Third, if step two is not satisfactory to either party, the student or professor may appeal to the Board of Ministry. Their decision is final. There is no further appeal.

Similar steps are to be followed in conflicts with students or administration. In all cases the

Board of Ministry is the final court of appeal.

C O U R S E S T R U C T U R EYearlong courses are set up to be equivalent to a one-semester class. The expectation for a one-semester hour class is 15 class/seat hours. In this intensive program, the classes are sup-plemented by local-area student-led colloquia.

Homework expectations are two hours of work for every hour of class time. Hence, a student pursuing a full load of 10 hours should antici-pate spending 300 hours on homework.

Faculty has been instructed that the guiding rules at the school regarding homework are:

Text/collateral reading, 25 pages = 1 hour10 page paper with research = 25 hours

5 page reaction paper = 10 hours

Thus a three-hour class with a homework load of 90 hours might require:

2 10-page papers= 50 hours

1000 pp. text and collateral reading = 40 hours

I N C O M P L E T EClass work should be completed by March 31. An Incomplete “I” grade may be granted by a Professor, together with approval of the Dean/Registrar, if the student incurs illness or unpre-ventable and unforeseeable circumstances in-hibiting his/her ability to meet course require-ments on time. The work must be completed by the 15th of August for the “I” to be changed to another grade. When the Professor submits his/her grades, he/she must indicate what grade the student would receive if the student does not complete his/her work by the above date.

To remove an Incomplete, a student may retake the course when it is again offered by PESM. A student can also remove the Incomplete by retaking the course as an independent study with the approval of the dean and the professor. Should the student have more than one Incom-plete, he/she may only work on one Incomplete at a time. The student will be responsible for the regular fees for the retake or the fees for an independent study.

C O U R S E D E S C R I P T I O N SBIB 500 OLD TESTAMENT WITH INDUCTIVE STUDYThis course combines a basic introduction to the canonical Old Testament with a study of hermeneutics. In the introduction emphasis, items of a critical nature such as authorship, dating, audience, and purpose are considered. However, primary focus is on a study of the contents of the canonical text, its cultural background, and its relationship with the New Testament. In the hermeneutics emphasis, the primary focus is on learning and practicing the inductive approach to scriptures.

CHT 500 CHURCH HISTORY SURVEYThis course surveys the history of Christianity from the age of the apostles to the end of the twentieth-first century, with primary emphasis on the teachings and life of the church. Each of the major periods in the history of the church is examined for ways in which they have in-fluenced and shaped the church of the twenti-eth-first century. Special attention is given to the American church, the milieu in which the

Evangelical Church has been shaped.

CED 500 CHRISTIAN EDUCATIONThis course will be a discovery of the “big picture” of Christian Education (CE) Ministry within the local church. It will expose the student to the biblical, theologi-cal, philosophical and psychological rational for a quality CE ministry. It is required as foundational for all students entering the general church ministry and for those spe-cializing in CE ministry in particular.

PST 500 CHURCH GROWTHThis course is designed to introduce the student to the theological and methodological prin-ciples underlying the growth of the church in relation to societal structures. It examines the reasons for growth as well as lack of growth. Each student is expected to become familiar with church growth on the American scene and to do a study of the growth of a church (congregation) or a conference of churches. The course has as an objective the imparting of “church growth eyes” to each student.

DEVOTIONAL LIFE: MENTORThis course is designed to introduce the stu-dent to spiritual formation and development through the disciplines of reading, praying, journaling and mentoring.

CHT 502 THEOLOGY/DOCTRINE OF CHRISTIAN HOLINESSThe doctrine of Christian holiness is examined, emphasizing scriptural teachings concerning the doctrine, experience, and the life of the be-liever. Readings examine those teachings from an historical perspective, from the Wesleyan

Arminian tradition, and from current literature. It is a doctrine to be believed, an experience to be received, and a life to be lived.

COU 500 PASTORAL CARE AND COUNSELINGThis course provides the ministry student with basic material and skills to enable Biblical counseling and pastoral care in the local church context. The course is intended to be extremely practical. Three major emphases are: 1. Solu-tion-based counseling; 2. Life-issues viewed from a Biblical perspective; and 3. Develop-ment/acquisition of “tools” necessary to provide the pastor a foundation for pastoral care and counseling ministry.

LDR 500 LEADERSHIP/PASTORAL THEOLOGYThis course is designed to introduce the student to pas-toral theology/leadership. It is intended that the student will develop a mentoring re-lationship with an approved pastor/mentor. Spiritual formation and development

BIB 502 BIBLICAL STUDY WITH INDUCTIVE STUDYBiblical Studies enhance one’s inductive Bible study skills by the in-depth study of an Old

Testament book and a New Testa-ment book while increasing one’s understanding of the central Biblical themes. This course also adds the dimension of study in the Biblical languages using both books and com-puter assisted aids.

PMW 500 WORSHIP IN THE LOCAL CHURCHThis course is designed to help the student develop a theology of wor-ship that will serve to guide personal worship and corporate worship lead-ership. Attention will be given to wor-ship service planning and to practical issues related to contemporary church worship, including the use of music, prayer, drama, preaching, media, and sacraments.

PST 501 CHURCH PLANTINGThis course is designed to introduce the student to the theological and methodological princi-ples upon which church planting becomes a reality. It is designed to be practical but also motivational. The intent of this course is to put into the hands of a new church planter tools that will help him plant a church where none had existed before.

PRE 500 PREACHING/WORSHIPThis class is an introduction to biblical preach-ing. Students learn the basic elements of ser-mons, as well the types of sermons and how they are constructed in concert with the hermeneu-tical principle of inductive exegesis in order to produce expository preaching. Special attention is given to the use of story (the narrative para-digm) as a form of argumentation in preaching. Some practicum experiences in delivery and in class evaluation of sermons are included.

SFD 501 DEVOTIONAL LIFE: MENTORThis course is designed to further assist the student in the development of pastoral theol-ogy/leadership with a focus on planning the church year, casting vision for the church body, budgeting, and the structure necessary for a church to function effectively. It is also intend-ed that the student will continue or develop a mentoring relationship with an approved pas-tor/mentor. A pastor needs to begin to disciple other people, so this course will focus on the disciple-making process. Spiritual formation and development is a lifelong process, so the student will continue or develop the disciplines of reading, praying, journaling, and mentoring.

BIB 503 BIBLICAL STUDY WITH TRIP TO ISRAELBiblical studies enhanced by an on-site visit to key towns, places, and geography of biblical significance. In addition to the travel in Israel, there will be six lectures and a response paper for those who take the course for credit. This course will be offered every three to four years and may be taken in place of another of the BIB courses.

PORTFOLIO DEMONSTRATING MASTERY OF MINISTRYThe purpose for this portfolio is to serve as a mechanism to bring together the important things the student has learned at PESM. From each class the student is expected to write a paper of five to six pages containing the key ideas he/she wants to retain as a result of this course. For example out of the Pastoral Counseling course the student could write a paper on the procedure he/she would follow for pre-marital counseling or grief counseling. Out of the preaching course the student could lay out a preaching series on a book of Scripture or a theme. In the Inductive Bible Study courses a student could do an inductive study of a book of the Bible and present the key ideas found in that book which apply to the church today. A faculty person will be assigned as a student’s mentor. This portfolio will be reviewed by the fellow students in the colloquia time, by the student’s mentor, and by the faculty advisor. Review by the full-faculty will take place as necessary.
