olf season is supposed to be one of the longest and most streanous of collegiate sports; start playing tour-naments as soon as school starts, end when the semes-ter ends and then pretty much do it all over again in the Spring. The Pacifi c golf program has taken a little bit of a different approach this season. And by ap-proach we mean playing all fi ve fall tournaments within one month.

Abandoning the traditional tournaments and tourna-ment schedule the Tigers won’t play an offi cial event until nearly mid-October when they kick things off at the Firestone Invitational in Ohio. Maybe not the usual collegiate trend but very

little about Goethals’ team smacks of normalacy. Tradi-tion, sure; but never let it be said anything about how the fifth-year coach and his program is ordinary.

“I think it’s a positive how our schedule has worked out,” said Goethals. “The guys get a chance to get in, get reaclimated, get ahold of their academics without the pressure of tournament play right off the bat, and as a coach I love it. We get a chance to see who’s stepped up their game in the offeason and I can be confident that we’re putting the best team out there in the Fall.”

Following nearly two months of school, practice, and qualifying rounds the Tigers travel across the county to Ohio to play the Firestone Invitational. The country club annually hosts the PGA WEC World Champion-ship event and it will be the first time Pacific has played the tournament. It’s then back to the West Coast for the remainder of the Fall campaign where the team will head down for back-to-back Southern California tourna-ments: Del Walker Intercollegiate and a day later the Bill Cullum Intercollegiate.

While the Tigers have not played Northridge’s hosted Cullum Intercollegiate since 2006, they have tasted success at the Del Walker, finishing second there two years ago by a single shot and fourth this past season. Reminiscent of local Stockton Country Club, the Virginia Country Club is where the 49ers hold their annual event.

The Tigers play host at their very own Pacific Invitational

to open the month of November. Brookside Country Club once again ushers in four days of PGA Tour-like conditions and amenities for 12 of the nations top col-lege teams. Oregon, BYU, Kansas State and UC Davis highlight the 2009 field. Pacific will be looking to de-fend their home course and avenge an 8th place finish last year. Usually the Invitational caps off the fall season for Pacific but this time around the Tigers will head to Poppy Hills for the St. Marys’ Invitational.

Only time will tell if the Tigers will benefit from the new schedule; but with only losing one senior from the 2008-09 season, the Tigers have their roster positioned to be competitive, and make a run at every tournament in their fall line-up.

“We have no seniors this year and still have eight guys with at least a year or two or more of college golf ex-perience,” added Goethals. “We’re only going to get better and I think with this squad it’s sooner rather than later.”

Paying attention to his most talented roster since he took over in 2005, Goethals has positioned his young but ex-perienced squad for early season success. Having risen the ranks from 250th in the county to their current 93rd in the nation one thing is certainly on the Tigers mind; while they may not be where they want to be yet, they don’t have any intentions of heading backwards.

Now into his fifth year as Pacific head coach, Goethals has four recruiting classes under his belt and is looking for his players to finally make the kind of impact he was looking for when he left top ranked Georgia Tech in 2005. Goethals has helped the Tigers rise in the ranks of college golf from 250th in the country to their current top 100 state. Under his coaching the Tigers have an individual and team victory in the last two years and three players have earned Academic All-American honors. He created the renowned Pacific Invitational, revamped the Tiger Hunt and the Pacific Golf Academy, and started The Clubhouse boosters and alumni foundation. Having successfully

recruited three top junior classes in a row, Goethals has the Tigers poised to break out in 2009 as he returns seven letterwinners and adds another phenomenal recruiting class. Goethals was the assistant on Yellow Jacket teams that finished fifth (2004), 11th (2003), and second (2002 and 2005). He played a large part in recruiting the last three years, and successfully recruited four players over the course of two-years that were ranked in the top 30 nationally. Goethals graduated from UNLV with a degree in communications in 1992. A native of Northern California, Goethals grew up in Redding.

take your questions.Goethals’ teams have improved every year since he started, he’s ushered in top ranked recruit-ing classes, revamped fundraising with THE

CLUBHOUSE, created huge support throughout the community, and created a nationally renown

collegiate tournament. Throughout the course of his four years his teams have set the bar for academic excellence, broken five scoring records, and won both individually and as a team. But a measured amount of success isn’t nearly enough for one of

the most driven men in college golf...

Q. Your schedule looks very different from years’ past... with three new tournaments on the books for the fall. What’s the outlook for the this season?BG. The fall schedule is a little different for a couple of reasons. First off, I will be in Japan until the middle of September so I didn’t want to schedule any events until I was back. Secondly, I also thought it would be a good idea to see how we fared if we gave the guys the opportunity to get their academics in place and to get some solid practice in before our events started. Firestone will be a great experience and the last four events will give us a chance to succeed.

Q. You’ve pretty much had the same captain for your entire time at Pacific (Charlie Van Sicklen who graduated last year), who replaces him as team leader and what are you looking for as far as some leadership?BG. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the most important question of the year. Charlie did a wonderful job for our program and now it is time for current co-captains Pat Kucich and TJ Bordeaux to step up. I’m convinced that great teams have great leaders, and you must have some-one in the position to lead from a player perspective. Whether they are a vocal leader or a show by example leader, I don’t care, we just need someone to step up and hold other players on the team accountable for getting to the next level.

Q. UC Irvine has been the dominant force in the Big West for some time now. Your Tigers tied them in the conference championship last season. Who do you have to watch out for this year?BG. UC Irvine has been really solid in recent years. Paul has done a won-derful job and I see nothing changing in the near future. UC Davis had an amazing year last year and I would assume they would be another team a top the Big West next year. I know that we can play with these teams, we just need to have some success and finally realize that we are good enough to win at that level. The main goal for me as a coach is to have this team ready to compete come the Big West Championships.

Q. We’re hearing a lot about this “Clubhouse”. What exactly is the Club-house?BG.The Clubhouse is a new vehicle to raise money for the Pacific Golf pro-gram. Coach Fletcher and I came up with this idea because we wanted to have our boosters become more involved with the program. I believe that the clubhouse will give the people who support us the opportunity to get to know our players a lot better and understand how their donation makes an impact on our future. I’m excited to see how it all plays out.

Q. You’ve brought in some top-ranked junior golf players in all three of your recruiting classes. Who do you have coming in this year and what are expecting out of them, if anything?BG. This year we have brought in two fine young men that I expect to have an immediate impact on the team. The first player is Alex Edfort from New Jersey. He will be entering as a freshman and I’m proud to say is the first golfer under my tenure to earn the Powell Scholarship. Our second addition is James Field Jr. He will be joining us as a redshirt sophomore. James has a ton of experience on the amateur level and I would hope that he would come in and push his teammates right away.

The team, the conference and will a leader please stand up!?

The ultimate vision for the Pacifi c Golf Program, through The Clubhouse, is to maintain and enhance fundrais-ing opportunies. Our goal is to create different levels of giving that would allow Pacifi c Golf to not only main-tain fi nancial stability but to also grow and continue on the path towards an elite collegiate golf program.

By creating The Clubhouse, our supporters now have the ability and fi nancial freedom to support the program with a one-time yearly gift. Abandoning various promotions for funds throughout the year this will allow the ultimate clubhouse membership to join and support the Tigers in all aspects including the Tiger Hunt, Pacifi c Invitational, Pacifi c Cup and numerous other ventures.

The Clubhouse will also allow Pacifi c Golf to better recognize and track annual giving, thus bringing those members of the Pacifi c Golf family closer to the young men they are supporting.

The foundation for any successful venture begins and ends with planning and vision. The Pacifi c Golf Program, much like the game of golf is no exception. As on the golf course you would use a yardage book to plan and chart you game you will use this yardage book to track and show your involvement in the Pacifi c Golf Program.

Within the normal pages you would be able to mark yardages, pin placements and wind tendencies to complete a successful round. That same vision is applied here as you will be able to choose your level of involvement with the Tigers. The system is designed as one of ease; we want you to have the fl exibility to join the Club-house either all at once, split payments or even quartlery.

While you have the ability to become more involved with this great program and the young men that will shape its future the Pacifi c Golf program likewise will now have the ability to bring you closer within the Family than ever before.

The vision of the program is one of greatness and that begins and ends with the support from players like yourself. Let this yardage book be your guide throughout The Clubhouse and we look forward to you joining someday soon.

hill to climb for Pacific Golf to reside among the nation’s elite. See where the Tigers fit in the GolfWeek and GolfStat rankings.

Jeff BrehautHOLDS FIRST DAY LEAD AT

2009 US OPEN at Bethpage

For the second year in a row an incoming Pacific golf captain set the standard by winning the Stockton City Championship. Patrick Kucich used a 69-70 to take the two-day tournament. Last season it was Kucich's teammate Charlie Van Sicklen that won the Stockton City Championship the month before he took over as captain of the Pacific Golf team; this time around Kucich showed his worth by shooting a two-day score of 139 at Stockton's Van Buskirk and Swenson golf courses. Local standout Ryan Carter finished second at 141 while an-other former Tiger, AJ Hohn took third place. "It was pretty close to textbook golf," said Kucich. "I only made three bogies on the weekend and then made my birdies on the par 5's (scoring holes)."

Pacific Golf academy RetuRns to ReseRve at sPanos PaRkMore than 20 junior golf-ers from the Northern California area attended the 2009 Pacific Golf Academy at the Reserve at Spanos Park from June 15-18.

Awards were given out to the individual cham-pion of each division level as well as camper of the week, best dressed, hard-est worker and numerous other awards.

Campers had the opportu-nity to learn from Goeth-als and his staff during the morning instruction ses-sions and then test their skill on the course at The Reserve at Spanos Park. The camp is conducted each June.

Brehaut briefly held the lead after the first day of the 109th US Open after torrential rains forced play shortened for the day. He shot a -1 as he teed off in one of the first groups of the morning.

If it’s amazing what a difference a year makes... -- how bout four years?

The ever-changing face of Pacific Golf has gone through some major overhauls in the last half-decade since Brandon Goethals took over in the summer of ‘05.Take a look at the moments that have shaped

the team, defined the program and made the Tigers the team they are today.

~ I like the chemistry this season. This is the first year it’s all coach’s guys that he recruited. We’ve all been together for

two years and have bonded really well. There are four of us living together here and then everyone else is living together.

~ Living right on the sixth hole is perfect. We can go play, hit wedges, putt around and work off each other.

~ It was my least favorite. I wouldn’t mind not going back to that Arizona tournament this time around. I didn’t

hate the course but it was really too damn hot with the pants

~ We could win the Pacific Invitational this year. It just requires patience and knowing that there’s birdies out

there but also just taking what the course gives you that day.

~ The class load is a little light this semester. I should have plenty of time to study and play as much golf as I want.

~ If I’m out playing with something on the line... I don’t wanna be playing Ed Sprague or Stonebarger. I gotta

give Frank strokes and he never gives up and Sprague’s one of the best players at Brookside so that’s always tough.

~ Santa Cruz. If I’m not on the course you can probably find me in Santa Cruz, on the beach, hanging out...

~ Baseball. I played it until my junior year of high school. I don’t know if I could play at Pacific but I think I coulda

played division two.

~ My dog’s name is Brandy but we call her Momma. She’s probably the cleanest in the house compared to the

other guys. At least I know she’s potty trained.

~ I usually lay-up on the par 5’s. I’ve worked hard on my wedges so there’s no point in trying to squeeze one up

on the par 5.

The Tigers’ most tenured player led his team to victory, was two strokes short of multiple wins, was named Player of the Month and his team’s captain. That hap-pened just in the last sixth months. Excited to see what he can do in the next six? He is.

O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!

~ There’s no official status - it’s understood with the girlfriend. We’re having fun, she’s come out to tournaments

and supported me.

~ Winning the Stockton City was good; any win is good. Anytime you can beat the entire field is important

and it was good to follow in Charlie’s footsteps as captain.

~ What I went through from my freshman year to now was invaluable. I just needed the experience that I re-

ceived between my freshman year and now.

~ I use the facilities before every tournament round.

~ Rice was the best tournament of the year. I finished

third. The team won. It’s a helluva lot better flying back home

with a big trophy strapped in the seat next to you.

~ As a captain I’d hope the guys come to me because I do

have experience and knowledge to share. They can talk to me about whatever.

~ Pasatiempo is my favorite course but there were some views at Cypress that were the best I’ve ever seen.

~ The number one goal is to get better and get to regionals and get a taste of that as a team. From there we

want to move on to nationals and with the match play format you never know what could happen. We have the tal-

ent to get it done but we’ve got to do something that we have haven’t experienced before.

‘It’s a helluva lot better flying back home with a big trophy strapped in the seat next to you.’
