PAC/LM Volleyball Crushes Manson-NWW!The Cougars of Manson/Northwest Webster travelled to Pocahontas on Thursday, September 15th to match up in a Twin Lakes Conference volleyball contest against the Indians of PAC/LM. The night completely belonged to the Indians as they crushed their conference foe in a best of 5 set match, 3 sets to 0. From start to finish, the PAC/LM volleyball girls completely dominated the Cougars with scores of the 3 sets being 25-15, 25-15 and 25-5. The Indians will resume conference play on Thursday, September 22nd against the Jaguars of S.E. Valley. Keep up the great work!

PAC/LM Volleyball Victorious Over WBM!On Tuesday, September 13th, the PAC/LM Indians volleyball team made the trip to West Bend to face off in a Twin Lakes Conference Volleyball contest against the host Wolverines. Although not exactly pretty at times, the Indians were able to hold off the scrappy Wolverines and come away with a best of 5 victory, winning 3 sets to 0. Scores of the sets were 25-17, 25-18, and 25-22. At the Library

I am on the Advisory Panel for the State Library of Iowa. Last week we had a meeting at their office in the Ola Babcock Miller building, formerly home to the Iowa State Historical Society. Each time I am there, I am struck by the beauty of this building, which is on the Capitol campus. It has been beautifully cared for and restored. On our agenda this time were the State Librarian’s Annual Report: Enrich Iowa Report (This is how State funding is distributed to Iowa libraries) Public Library Standards, (These are the new accreditation standards I told you about last week) State Library’s Strategic Plan: Fiscal Years 2013-2017 (preliminary results and final strategies) and beginning to plan Strategies for Fiscal Years 2018-2022. Grants to States and LSTA Information was our last item – that’s how the State Library receives Federal money. My head was spinning with facts and ideas by the time we were done! I recovered quickly and got to attend a Story Time with 3 of my great nephews at the Waukee Library before I headed home! What a great day! New adult fiction includes: Home by Harlan Coben (CD Book also) Pushing Up Daisies by M.C. Beaton, Wonder by Emma Donoghue (CD Book also) The Nix by Nathan Hill, Obvious Fact and Highwayman by

Craig Johnson, The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena, Woman of God by James Patterson, Kept Woman by Karin Slaughter and Infamy by Robert Tanenbaum. We also got a great selection of kids’ nonfiction books. These books are so attractive with lots of photographs – they make learning fun! How informed are you about your choices for Pocahontas Auditor and Sheriff in the upcoming election? We can help! Come to the library Monday, October 3 at 7 p.m. for a candidate forum. All of the Pocahontas County Auditor candidates, Karen Halder, Ann Harrison and Kelly Jepsen will be here, as well as Pocahontas County Sheriff candidates Alex Leu, Brian Runneberg and Brian Larsen. Each candidate will have an opportunity to introduce themselves and make a short statement, then be asked a question or two by our moderator. Let us help you to make an informed decision on Election Day! There are still a couple spots left in our card making class. We will be meeting the 4th Tuesday of the month (September 27th) at 6:30 p.m. September theme will be sympathy cards. Class size is limited, so preregistration is necessary. The cost to make 3 cards is still just $5. Stop at the Library to see samples of this month’s cards and to sign up! Our Book Club choice for September is “One Summer: America 1927” by Bill Bryson. Our cataloging system describes this nonfiction work this way, “Recounts the story of a pivotal cultural year in the United

States when mainstream pursuits and historical events were marked by contributions by such figures as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and Al Capone.” Pick up a copy of this book and join the discussion at 7 p.m. Monday, September 26. We also added a Take it Tuesday 6:30 p.m. October 4th. Deb will guide us as we make a pumpkin decoration out of an old book. Stop at the Library or check out our Facebook page to see a sample. Class size is limited so sign up at the Library for this free class! All ages are welcome, but kids must bring their own adult. We plan to continue this Take it Tuesday on the first Tuesday of the month.

Democratic Party FundraiserThe Pocahontas County Democrats will hold a fundraiser for their county Democrat candidates: Karen Halder, County Auditor; Alex Leu, County Sheriff; Jeff Ives and Ed Dewey, County Board of Supervisors. Guest speaker will be Former Senator Daryl Beall who will focus on the election process and lead a discussion concerning this year's election activities. The event will be held at the Lauren's Golf Clubhouse on Oct. 1st. A social hour will start at 5:00pm with the dinner to follow at 6:00pm. Sen. Keri and Ben Aschenbrenner to Share Their Love of Butterflies and Bugs at the Albert City Public Library

Keri Aschenbrenner started hunting with her uncle Tim in grade school, along with several of her cousins. He was a serious collector. When Tim moved from Sioux City to Massachusetts, he donated his collection to Iowa State. Keri's mother always had her collection hanging in their home when she was growing up. She said her mother, Keri's grandmother, would take them hunting when she was a child. Keri's mom grew up in West Bend, Iowa. Keri and her husband, Jason, moved from Omaha to Laurens when their son Ben started third grade and that’s when the bug and butterfly hunting began. The family started hunting out in the fields, in the ditches, and on the trails around the area. The Rolfe trail is their favorite! Ben was always more interested than the girls so he was Keri's main

hunting buddy. The girls did hunt and do have their own collections but Ben’s collection is much more extensive. They truly love it! Now that Ben has moved out of the home, they don’t hunt like they used to, but once in a while mother and son will hit the trails. Keri has passed her love of hunting bugs down to her grandson. They go hunting together now. Hunting was always so much fun because they would see so much wildlife. They have found deer skulls, and owl pellets. They have seen many deer, hawks, snapping turtles, eagles, and even a few beavers. Keri and her husband, Jason, and family make their home in Laurens, Iowa. Come, see a portion of Keri and son Ben's extensive butterfly and bug collection at the Albert City Public Library on Tuesday, September 27th at 7 p.m. Hear how they hunt, see their gear, and hear all about the many varieties of insects in their collections. As always, refreshments will be served after the program.

Laurens Volunteer Firefighter Association Dear Friends:

October 2nd through the 8th is Fire Prevention Week. This is the time of the year to remind you to

check your homes and business establishments for possible fire hazards. Also please take time to check

your smoke detectors to make sure they work and to change the batteries in the detectors. This should be

done twice a year to insure that they work should you need them. Do you own a fire extinguisher? These

also need to be checked at least once a year to keep them in working order. If you are unsure how to

check them, just ask any firefighter and we will either explain how to check them or if you prefer, check

them for you. These are such simple things, but could become very important in an emergency.

The Laurens Volunteer Firefighter Association would like to invite you and your family to visit the Fire

Station on Sunday, Oct. 2nd. We will be serving pancakes and sausages from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. or

later, if need be. While you are visiting with us, please take a look at the equipment that has been

purchased with your tremendous support over the years. I am sure you will find it very interesting.

We are once again asking for your help, as with all things from time to time our equipment needs to be

up-dated. Many of the things used by the Fire Department were purchased by your generous donations

and we are very proud of the equipment we have. Once again this year all proceeds from the Breakfast

will go towards purchasing new SCBA’s. We are asking that you place your donations, whether large or

small, in the enclosed envelope and mail it to the Fire Department or better yet, bring it with you on Oct.

2nd and spend a little time with us.

Our annual pancake breakfast has always been a great success thanks to the wonderful support of our

community. It is great to live in a community where people respect and care about each other, making it

much easier to be a volunteer. Thank you for your continued support and thank you in advance for your

contribution.

Class of ‘66 Holds 50th Class ReunionThe Class of 1966 of Laurens High School held their 50th class reunion on Friday, August 26 and Saturday, August 27, 2016. On Friday, August 26, classmates met at the home of Terry & Deb Spanier for a meal and snacks and sat around two bon fires as they enjoyed visiting with each other. Those who came on Friday night were: Ron & Sue Sandvig, Ann Beneke, Betty (Brewster) & Dewey Ludwig, Darrell Ahlers, Jim & Kathy Crotty, Jan (Reining) Bloes, Gene & Connie Rubel, Myrna (Olson) Gordon, Marge (Maurer) Semke, Vicki (Sheets) Sulak, Sandy (Fuchs) Carlson, Kathy (Gulbranson) Scheich, Gene Mackie, Dick Egertsen, Steve Grice, Lois (Ryan) Coffey, Doug & Sue Wenell, Chuck & Diane Sloan, Gail (McCain) & Rich Holcomb, Steve Hodges; Jan (Baughman) & Ed Varnum, Jim Conklin, John & Amy Rubel and Vicki Pearson. On Saturday, August 27, classmates met at the Laurens-Marathon School where Amy Gustafson and son led the group on a tour of the school, which all enjoyed. On Saturday evening, August 27, classmates met at the Wild Rose Casino for visiting and a very delicious buffet meal. After the meal, Terry Spanier reminisced about what it was like to graduate and live

50 years ago. Then John Rubel and Terry Spanier did the skit "Archie Cambell That's Good, No That's Bad". Terry and Deb Spanier then asked the classmates questions about their high school days and door prizes were passed out. To close the night out, Terry gave a speech to honor all the veterans of the class. Iowa 4-H Shooting Sports State Match ResultsIowa 4-H Shooting Sports Program held a State Match at Big Springs Range, Montezuma. 4-H youth competed in 4 disciplines: Archery, Muzzleloader, Rifle, and Shotgun. 134 youth participated in 215 Shooting Events, from 31 Iowa Counties. Youth enjoyed a full day of 4-H Shooting Sports activities with many adult mentors. 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassadors were also assisting with the State Match event. Gabriel, Jael, and Jesse Coon, children of Gene and Carla Coon of Fonda participated in Archery and Rifle. 4-H Safety and Education in Shooting Sports (SESS) uses skills and disciplines of shooting to assist young people and their leaders in obtaining knowledge and developing life skills. Yard and Garden: Planting Tulips and Flowering Bulbs in FallTulips are a welcome part of the spring landscape, but to enjoy their benefits in warm weather, work must be done during fall. Fall is the optimal time to plant tulips and other spring-flowering bulbs to maximize their spring potential. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists can help answer questions about tulips and other spring-flowering bulbs, and how to handle them in fall weather. To have additional questions answered, contact the ISU Hortline at 515-294-3108 or hortline@iastate.edu. What are good planting sites for tulips? Tulips perform best in partial to full sun. Planting sites should receive at least six hours of direct sun per day.

Tulip bulbs also need a well-drained, fertile soil. When is the best time to plant tulips? October is the ideal time to plant tulips, daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs in Iowa. When planted in October, spring-flowering bulbs have time to develop a good root system before the ground freezes in winter. If the ground isn’t frozen, tulips and other spring-flowering bulbs can be planted as late as late November/early December. How deep should tulips be planted? Tulip bulbs should be planted 6 to 8 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart. Plant 10 or more bulbs of the same cultivar in an area to achieve the greatest visual impact in the garden. Which are the best tulips for perennializing? Most modern tulip cultivars bloom well for only three or four years. However, there are some tulip types (classes) that bloom well over a longer time period. Darwin hybrid tulips are generally the longest blooming hybrid tulip. Darwin hybrid tulips are prized for their large, brilliant flowers. Flowers are available in shades of red, pink, orange, yellow and white. Blooms are borne on stems that are up to 30 inches tall. Darwin hybrid tulips bloom in mid-spring. Fosteriana tulips also perennialize well. They are noted for their large, elongated flowers. Flowers appear in early spring on 10- to 20-inch-tall stems. Foliage is typically green or gray-green. However, a few cultivars have mottled or striped foliage. Fosteriana tulips are also known as Emperor tulips. Species tulips are generally the longest lived tulips. Some naturalize when given favorable growing conditions. Species tulips include wild tulip species and cultivars developed from these wild species. Species tulips are usually smaller than most modern tulips. They also have smaller flowers. Species tulips are excellent choices for rock gardens and in the front of beds and borders. They also are sometimes referred to as botanical tulips.

National 4-H Week 2016 Now is the time of year for youth to join and participate in 4-H, the youth development program of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Pocahontas county will be celebrating all things 4-H during National 4-H Week October 2-8. 4-H is active in each of Iowa’s 99 counties and empowers youth to reach their full potential through many different types of experiences including photography, music, woodworking, sewing, archery, livestock and horticulture. Youth have fun while gaining valuable skills in communication and the arts, citizenship and leadership, science, technology, engineering and math, as well as healthy living and personal life management by being involved in 4-H. Pocahontas County will have an open house Monday, October 3-Friday, October 7 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served along with drawings for door prizes. If you need assistance getting your child enrolled in 4-H, please stop in and we’ll take care of the enrollment process. “As National 4-H Week approaches it is important to remember the 4-H pledge, which is recited at nearly every 4-H club meeting, and what it teaches. ‘I pledge my Head to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service and my Health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world.” 4-H grows confidence, creativity, curiosity, courage, character and much more in youth. 4-H allows youth to use the skills that they learn to go out and make a positive difference in their communities. Most lilies perform best in well-drained, slightly acidic soils in full sun. However, Martagon lilies prefer partial shade and neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Good soil drainage is imperative as bulbs may rot in poorly drained, wet soils. Raised beds are a good planting option in poorly drained locations. When is the best time to plant lilies? Early fall is an excellent time to plant Asiatic, Oriental and other garden lilies. Plant lily bulbs at a depth equal to three times their diameter. Container-grown lilies also can be planted in spring and summer. Plant container grown lilies at the same depth as in the pot. When would be a good time to dig and divide lilies? Early fall is an excellent time to dig and divide Asiatic, Oriental and other garden lilies. Carefully dig up the clump and separate the bulbs. Replant the bulbs immediately. If planting must be delayed, place the bulbs in a plastic bag containing lightly moistened sphagnum peat moss and place the bag in the refrigerator. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible. Can I plant tiger lilies near Asiatic, Oriental or other garden lilies? Many lily enthusiasts don’t grow tiger lilies (Lilium tigrinum) because they are often infected with lily mosaic virus. Lily mosaic virus causes little harm to tiger lilies. Often, you can’t tell that they have the disease. However, aphids and other sap-feeding insects may carry the virus from tiger lilies to other types. Many hybrid lilies infected with lily mosaic virus produce distorted foliage that is streaked or mottled. Also, infected plants produce fewer flowers and those flowers that do form are often deformed. Lilies exhibiting lily mosaic virus symptoms should be promptly dug up and discarded.
