Pentecost Sunday www.padreserra.org Page Three

My Dear Parish Family,

One of the greatest loves of my life has been working with and for teenagers at church. Last Saturdaywe celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation with 84 teens and 6 adults, their sponsors, families andguests. It is so powerful to be eyewitness to the transforming power of God’s great love in the lives ofthese young people. It is even more powerful when they recognize it too. That is the difficult partsometimes. When a person is in the middle of something, often they cannot see where they are. As themonths and years unfold, we pray that their faith will grow even stronger. We pray that their parents’faith is renewed. We pray that the community’s faith is revitalized.

I am constantly trying to think of new ways to articulate our Catholic faith, our love for God andChurch, to our young people. This year we talked about the white garment as a symbol of Christ. Firstworn at baptism, the Candidates donned it again at Confirmation. We encouraged them to take amoment, while putting on their garment, to imagine putting on Christ; being enveloped by his love. Atliturgy the Gospel from Luke chapter 24 quoted Jesus as saying “… you are clothed with power from onhigh” — beautiful and true.

This week at Pentecost the imagery turns from the exterior, being clothed, to the interior. Jesus talksabout himself and his Father loving us and dwelling in us. We are blessed with God’s great love for us,in us, and when we allow it, spilling out of us to others.

This weekend we are blessed to witness 101 children receive Holy Communion for the first time; beingfilled with Christ’s love. Remember making your first communion? What a gift! To be nourished at thetable of the Lord every Sunday! To be recharged, refueled, rested, to have our Lord dwelling in us.

I often pray, Lord what will you have me do today? Then try my best to let my own agenda go. Witheach visitor that graces the office, each phone call or email I wonder, is this the one Lord? The one yousent today? The one who may need a sign of your love?

As we shift to summertime after ‘sacrament season’, I look forward to a different pace. It is awonderful, happy time with summer camp, random vacations and visitors, cleaning out cabinets andmaking plans for the year ahead. We take a break, stretch, rest and make ready a dwelling place.

Please pay special attention to the wonderful opportunities toparticipate in Faith Formation for children, teens and adults bothat Summer Camp and all the programs for preschool throughhigh school and beyond. We are so blessed!

Love,

Reflecting on God's WordIn the Middle Ages, when science seemed to be stepsister to the arts, people thought that phlogiston was what made something burnable. The more phlogiston, the more readily flammable was the way theyunderstood physics' inner workings. It explained why rocks did notburn and why straw readily did. Though phlogiston has long been shelved, its theory is not so farremoved from how the Spirit of God burns in our lives, nor is it farfrom the gifts that God's Spirit sets aflame in us. If some effort ofours glows with light and heat, it may be a sign of much Spirit, sortof like phlogiston. On the other hand, if in our effort to shine there'snot even a spark, it's quite likely that that is not where the Spirit hassettled into us. It might be better to pay attention then to some otheraspect of life. The struggle is to make sure that our imagined passion and where theSpirit of God wants us to be are one and the same so that the formerdoes not cause us to stray from the latter. How does anyone know ifthey are where they should be? St. Paul says that the Spirit giveseach of us our own dose of divine giftedness, our own spark withwhich to shine, but it's not given to us for our own glory or fun orfeel-good self-image but for the good of others, for the community, for building up life. John's Gospel suggests one other such test--whether or not we're at peace. That, too, is the Spirit's gift.--Rev. Joseph J. JuknialisCopyright (c) 2012, World Library Publications. Living God’s WordAs we go through life, we needto find out where the Spiritwants us to be. Often, however,it's not the same as where wewould like to be, or think weshould be. It may be that at suchtimes we're wrestling with the very Spirit of God.Copyright (c) 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
