PADRE’S CORNER December 4, 2016 "Silver linings" in life are positive ways of seeing personal, emotional, and spiritual growth in the midst of difficult or bad incidents involving persons, places, and things. We have all stumbled in this regard, especially with persons. There may have been dating partners or friends, as an example, that ended bitterly. The temptation would be to pass the whole experience off as a waste of time and perhaps resources (money). I have had people that were part of my life in recent years that are now gone. My philosophy is to see those moments as having been of value at that point of time, but then needing to move on especially if they do not further our/my relationship with God. Yet our Father brings who is right into our life in these complex encounters, and then we can further appreciate the past that is gone for the future that awaits us. The phrase "silver lining" historically emanates from 1634, when poet author John Milton used this phraseology in "Comus: A Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle. "In part, Milton calls out into the darkness and light: "I see ye visibly, and now believe that He, the Supreme Good, to whom all things ill are but as slavish officers of vengeance, would send a glistening guardian, if need were to keep my life and honor unassailed. Was I deceived, or did a sable cloud turn forth her silver lining on the night?" Comedians, like writers, draw upon the same depth of sufferings and goodness to produce such "silver linings" in their movies or even comic strips. On October 24, I heard a lecture in Manhattan by the legendary producer Mel Brooks (who was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 28, 1926). The architect of great films such as "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles" as well as "High Anxiety," Brooks had a series of rough starts to his life. His Jewish family came to America, in the midst of economic depressions and the constant threats of war, from Poland and the Ukraine. Mel had sickly health, and was often ridiculed by fellow students (which seems so ironic in 2016 considering the fact that at age 90 he has probably outlived all of those classmates). His father James died when Mel was only the age of two. About that death, Brooks underscores how the bitter moments of life can truly transform our life direction in a good way with the questioning toward (like Job in the Old Testament) yet ultimate help of God. He reflected: There's an outrage there. I may be angry at God, or at the world, for that. And I'm sure a lot of my comedy is based on anger and hostility. Growing up in Williamsburg, I learned to clothe it in comedy to spare myself problems - like a punch in the face." His talents from God developed in subsequent decades by serving in the Army during World War II, doing musical and comedy gigs in Catskill Mountain nightclubs, and being hired by NBC through his friend Carl Reiner. Before directing films solo, he co-produced the "Get Smart" television show with actor Don Adams which ran from 1965-1970. At the East 18th Street talk cited above, Brooks took audience questions about making it in the highly competitive media world of entertainment. Mel's cultivated mantra, rooted in his own experience of rejection and success, was to "never give up" and that "all it needs is that one person to give you a break." I had a connection to Mel Brooks from 1998-2004, through a family from the Yonkers area that was friendly with him plus his wife Anne Bancroft (who died in 2005). They got me the autographed photo then that was virtually impossible for anyone to get the night of the lecture. The story of Charles Schulz, creator of the "Peanuts" in 1950, endured similar obstacles as that of Brooks. That is another story in vivid color for next week's "Padres Corner" What theme am I suggesting for each of us, spiritually speaking, in the wake of this brief analysis of a cultural icon's life? We also have our stories and memories of hardship, perhaps seeing them at the time as being of no purpose and senseless. Jesus felt the same way in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Apostles, all martyred except John, undoubtedly had the same sense of dread. However, you and I know the beneficent ending to those stories and lives of faith. The greatest story ever told - Jesus Christ - emerged from the tragic crucifixions and martyrdoms to point us toward hope in Him, as we face all the tough nonsense and pain that life throws at us. My life as a priest has at times been difficult, usually through the hands of a very few people, but God has allowed me to emerge wiser and stronger in the overall scope of circumstances. He has that same plan for you, as He did for Mel Brooks and Charles Schulz. That plan, however, requires prayerful tenacity and a trust He will make life right for us again. Father Bill

"Silver linings" in life are positive ways of seeing personal, emotional, and spiritual growth in the midst of difficult or bad incidents involving persons, places, and things. Was I deceived, or did a sable cloud turn forth her silver lining on the night?"

Comedians, like writers, draw upon the same depth of sufferings and goodness to produce such "silver linings" in their movies or even comic strips. On October 24, I heard a lecture in Manhattan by the legendary producer Mel Brooks (who was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 28, 1926). Growing up in Williamsburg, I learned to clothe it in comedy to spare myself problems - like a punch in the face."

What theme am I suggesting for each of us, spiritually speaking, in the wake of this brief analysis of a cultural icon's life?
