Padres barely touch Ray in rout by Diamondbacks Kevin Acee

The message given to Padres hitters entering Tuesday’s series opener was that Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Robbie Ray was not untouchable.

“There’s two ways you look at a guy,” Padres manager Andy Green said before the game. “You can look at how great he’s been – which he’s been incredibly good his last few times out – or you can look at his splits and say he’s struggled at home. Paint whatever picture you care to paint. One is you better respect it because he’s been good. But two, he’s been very human here at home. … You don’t want people thinking this guy has thrown 24 straight innings and is unhittable.”

Indeed, the Padres touched Ray. That’s about all they did in a 10-2 loss.

While the Diamondbacks were teeing off on Padres rookie Dinelson Lamet, chasing him in the fourth inning, the only damage the Padres did to Ray was end his scoreless streak at 27 2/3 innings when Hunter Renfroe launched a fastball deep into the left field seats with two outs in the fourth inning.

It was the Padres’ first of what would be three hits in Ray’s 6 2/3 innings. Renfroe would lead off the ninth with another homer, this time off Tom Wilhelmsen. It was Renfroe’s 13thhome run of the season and the fourth of what would end up being five Padres’ hits for the night.

Ray entered the game having won three starts in a row, not allowing a run in any of those games. All three starts were on the road. He has a 0.64 ERA in six road starts this season. He entered Tuesday’s game with a 6.75 ERA in five home starts.

Cosart out, Diaz likely in

The Padres have been looking for a time to get Miguel Diaz into the starting rotation. Jarred Cosart’s inability to remain healthy provided them with the opportunity.

Cosart was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with elbow inflammation, and Green said he is leaning toward giving Diaz his first major-league start Saturday against the Kansas City Royals.

“He’s got a lot of things that provide intrigue to us as starter,” Green said. “We’re going to take a look at that at some point in time. There’s a good chance it’s this Saturday.”

The 22-year-old Diaz, a Rule 5 draftee who never pitched above Single-A prior to this season, has three pitches that show signs of trending upward to becoming above average. From his first relief appearance, Green and pitching coach Darren Balsley have been impressed by his makeup and ability to learn and improve while at this level.

Page 3: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseball...Jun 07, 2017  · hits and three earned runs (no home runs) in 9 2/3 innings in his last seven appearances. He was tagged for five homers,

3

In what was almost certainly his final appearance before Saturday, Diaz replaced Lamet in Tuesday’s fourth inning and allowed an unearned run in his one inning. He has allowed eight hits and three earned runs (no home runs) in 9 2/3 innings in his last seven appearances. He was tagged for five homers, 16 hits and 17 earned runs over his first 14 appearances (14 1/3 innings).

Cosart was back in the Padres rotation for three weeks, making four starts.

“He’s had some elbow issues he’s dealt with the last couple years,” Green said. “He hasn’t been able to get over the hump. It’s still bothering him.”

Green said there was no indications Cosart was injured after his start Sunday, in which he allowed three runs on six hits over four innings before being pulled after allowing two baserunners to start the fifth inning. But there was swelling when he arrived at the park for treatment Monday.

He first went on the DL April 19 with a hamstring injury and was activated May 14.

Pirela up, starts

The Padres recalled Jose Pirela from Triple-A El Paso and put him to work right away.

Pirela, who was batting .331 with 13 home runs for the Chihuahuas, was in Tuesday’s starting lineup, playing left field and batting sixth.

Friedrich rehab, other injury updates

Christian Friedrich, who has yet to pitch this season due to a lat strain and elbow discomfort, is scheduled to start for Double-A San Antonio on Thursday. The plan is for him to pitch three innings.

Jared Weaver, on the DL with threw a bullpen Monday. Said Green: “He’s moving in the right direction.”

Outfielder Alex Dickerson, also sidelined the entire season with a protruding disc in his back, had four at-bats in an extended spring training game Sunday and is expected to do so again in the next few days.

Dad’s trip

About 15 Padres players are accompanied by their fathers for this short trip. The dads joined the team on its flight from San Diego on Monday, are staying with their sons and will attend each game in the series.

“It’s fun they get to experience what we do every day,” Renfroe said.

Despite dark outing, Lamet will still shine for Padres

Kevin Acee

The Padres were expecting better from Dinelson Lamet than what the rookie pitcher did Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

But most important to remember going forward was that there was expectation.

“I know everyone in the clubhouse is excited to watch,” veteran pitcher Clayton Richard said before the game. “He’s got something special. What to me has been most impressive is his poise, composure, how he’s gone about it. He’s not flustered by anything in the big leagues. … You can’t be timid. You have to trust yourself and let it go. He’s done that. It’s been a lot of fun to watch.”

Nothing has changed in that assessment.

Lamet was simply welcomed to the bigs on Tuesday, allowing nine runs (seven earned) and striking out just three before being lifted after walking the first two batters in the fourth inning of what ultimately became a 10-2 loss.

Lamet’s third career start was markedly different than his first two, which both had yielded eight strikeouts and victories.

Tuesday, he was falling behind, walking and hitting batters and leaving flat fastballs over the plate. Where he had allowed a .286 on-base average his first two starts, 11 of the 20 Diamondbacks he faced reached base.

“I was going a little too fast, speeding up a little bit and losing some control with the fastball,” Lamet said.

Hey, it happens. This was a far less surprising outing by such an inexperienced pitcher than what he’d accomplished before it.

And, most significantly for a team that is pretty much all about the future, the same cool Lamet could still be seen amidst his first barrage of big-time big-league ugliness.

After Jake Lamb skewered a double down the right field line in the first inning, bringing home two runs, Lamet received the throw in from Wil Myers, did a little skip – literally, skipped – flipped the ball from his glove to his bare hand and strode to the mound.

The kid seemed as unaffected as if Lamb had just popped out.

Page 5: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseball...Jun 07, 2017  · hits and three earned runs (no home runs) in 9 2/3 innings in his last seven appearances. He was tagged for five homers,

5

“Sooner or later something like this is going to happen,” Lamet said. “You have to be ready for that sort of thing. If you keep your head down after some bad starts, there are going to be plenty of those and you’re going to end up having a bad season. … I just have to be ready to bounce back. There are going be lots of starts and lots of opportunities. I don’t want to stay down. I have to come back from this.”

Manager Andy Green was as certain Lamet will as he was aware Lamet would have games like he did Tuesday.

"I don’t think he lacks for confidence at all," Green said. "He’ll bounce back. He’s got (some erratic command) in him. To deny that is to deny what he’s got to do to develop into a great major league pitcher. We knew that when we called him up. We knew there were going to be some really goodness and some ones he’s got to grow through."

Before the game, Green fairly marveled at Lamet’s self-assurance.

“You look at a guy who just shows up in the big leagues with limited experience at even major-league camp – and his exposure to major-league camp, he kind of struggled – and when he showed up you could just tell even that first day in New York he was completely relaxed, confident in himself,” Green said. “Rain delay possibility didn’t faze him at all. He got on the mound, he threw. Went all the way through the game, game ends, there was no deep breath realization. It just shows the guy was relaxed.

“It doesn’t mean he’s going to be great every single time he takes the mound. But those are encouraging signs to see. Couple that with a really live arm – a good slider and evolving feel for a changeup – and there is a lot to like.”

This wasn’t the first time the Padres saw Lamet lose his way in a big way.

His debut in a major-league spring training game in February was a relief appearance in which he walked four, allowed a hit and didn’t record an out. He made one more Cactus League appearance – a one-hit, one-walk scoreless inning – before being sent to minor-league camp.

He went 3-2 with a 3.92 ERA in eight starts for Triple-A El Paso this year, striking out 50 in 39 innings.

He pitched in the majors for the first time less than two weeks ago.

“Eight strikeouts in five innings is a sign of dominance,” Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley said before Tuesday’s game. “… He has a healthy respect for major league hitters. He's not afraid of them.”

Having skin like Lamet showed previously doesn’t just go away. Tuesday just got away from him.

Lamet is 6-foot-4 and acts like he’s bigger. It’s one thing for Green to walk around like he’s got a bigger man inside him. Green is 5-foot-nothing (or something like that).

Lamet is tall and pitches taller. Heck, he walks taller. Sits taller.

He’s got the talent. He’ll learn how to use it.

Page 6: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseball...Jun 07, 2017  · hits and three earned runs (no home runs) in 9 2/3 innings in his last seven appearances. He was tagged for five homers,

6

This isn’t one of the Latin American prepubescents the Padres signed. Lamet had immigration issues when the Philadelphia Phillies initially tried to sign him back in 2012. The Padres signed him in ’14, just before his 22nd birthday.

He’s 24-years-old, but he spent just two years in the minors, threw just 124 innings above Single-A before being called up and making his debut May 25 in New York.

He went five innings against both the Mets and Chicago Cubs, allowing a total of six hits and three runs. En route, he became just the 13th pitcher since 1900 to strike out eight batters in each of his first two career starts.

So his wipeout stuff was wiped out in his third start. It was not something you relish viewing.

But there is little as impressive to behold as confidence.

Lamet has it.

He’s shown that already. His fiery crash to earth won’t extinguish it.

Padres place Cosart on disabled list, recall Pirela Kevin Acee

Jarred Cosart was back in the Padres rotation for three weeks, making four starts.

On Tuesday, however, he was returned to the 10-day disabled list, this time with a strained right elbow.

The Padres recalled Jose Pirela from Triple-A El Paso. Pirela, who was batting .331 with 13 home runs for the Chihuahuas, is in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. He is playing left field and batting sixth.

Cosart did not retire either of the two batters he faced in the fifth inning of Sunday's loss to Colorado. He allowed three runs on six hits before being pulled.

He first went on the DL April 19 with a hamstring injury and was activated May 14.

Cosart went 0-1 with a 5.74 ERA in his four starts (15 2/3 innings) since returning and is 0-2, 4.88 in seven games (six starts) this season.

Manager Andy Green said he is leaning toward starting Miguel Diaz when Cosart’s turn in the rotation comes up Saturday against Kansas City at Petco Park.

Power surge continues for HR-happy

Renfroe

Padres outfielder hits pair of HRs, both more than 435

feet

By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com | @AJCassavell | 2:24 AM ET

PHOENIX -- Hunter Renfroe home runs come in all shapes and sizes.

You like towering, majestic blasts that scrape the sky? Renfroe provided one of those in the fourth inning

of the Padres' 10-2 loss to the D-backs on Tuesday night.

You like the low-trajectory rockets that exit the park in a flash? Renfroe had one of those, too, in the top

of the ninth.

Renfroe continued his power surge with a pair of prolific home runs, as he provided all of the Padres'

offense for the second consecutive game.

Both homers traveled more than 435 feet, making Renfroe only the second player this season to hit two

that far in the same game. He joined Miami's Giancarlo Stanton, who did so on May 7 -- always good

company when the topic is long home runs.

"It's just really about getting regular at-bats," Renfroe said of his recent run of success. "Just getting up

there, seeing pitches and battling. Rhythm has been good, and I'm just working hard in the cage. It's all

kind of coming together now."

In the ninth, D-backs reliever Tom Wilhelmsen challenged Renfroe with a 1-0 fastball down the middle.

It left the yard before Wilhelmsen could even turn and watch it. The ball landed three-quarters of the way

up the steps at Chase Field, and took one bounce before entering the concourse -- rare territory for home-

run hitters.

With an exit velocity of 114 mph, according to Statcast™, it was the hardest ball Renfroe has hit since he

was called up last September. At 442 projected feet, it was also the farthest.

Page 9: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseball...Jun 07, 2017  · hits and three earned runs (no home runs) in 9 2/3 innings in his last seven appearances. He was tagged for five homers,

9

Of course, Renfroe's other home run was also impressive. He launched a Robbie Ray fastball down the

left-field line at 438 projected feet -- the same distance as his solo shot off the third level of the Western

Metal Building at Petco Park on Sunday.

"It's always been in there, the power's never been a doubt," manager Andy Green said. "It's just about

consistently working into positive counts."

Much has been made about Renfroe's patience leading to power. Of his 13 home runs, only one has come

when he's behind in the count.

Renfroe got off to a dreadful start in April, when he walked just twice in 104 plate appearances and posted

a .623 OPS. That number has jumped by 140 points since the start of May -- a stretch in which Renfroe

has walked 15 times.

There's a tangible reason for Renfroe's success, and it was on display. Both Ray and Wilhelmsen started

Renfroe off with pitches at his ankles. He laid off, forcing them into the strike zone with a fastball.

A month and a half ago, D-backs pitchers had it easy with Renfroe.

"Against Taijuan Walker, the last time I was here [in April], I swung at every fastball he threw me, and

didn't even touch one of them," Renfroe said. "That was kind of their way of going about it. They threw

me some sliders in the dirt, I was able to lay off and get decent enough pitches to swing at."

Renfroe hits 2 HRs, but Lamet struggles in

loss

By Steve Gilbert and AJ Cassavell / MLB.com | 1:46 AM ET

PHOENIX -- Robbie Ray allowed just three hits and struck out 11 over 6 2/3 innings, as the left-hander

helped the D-backs snap a three-game losing streak with a 10-2 win over the Padres on Tuesday night at

Chase Field.

Ray (6-3) won his fourth straight start, despite having his scoreless streak end at 27 2/3 innings. The

double-digit strikeout total marked the seventh time Ray has accomplished the feat in his career.

"I'm feeling pretty good, got a good game plan with my catcher," Ray said. "So it's almost like get the ball

back, and whatever they throw down, I feel comfortable with it."

Jake Lamb drove in four runs for the D-backs, while Chris Owings added three RBIs with a homer

and Daniel Descalso had a pair to lead the offense. Most of the damage came off Padres starter Dinelson

Lamet, who allowed nine runs (seven earned) in three-plus innings.

It was Lamet's first poor outing in the big leagues. He had been sharp over his first two career starts, but

couldn't find the zone Tuesday, walking five and throwing just 42 of his 88 pitches for strikes.

Afterward, Lamet attributed his struggles to the game speeding up on him, putting his mechanics out of

whack. Padres manager Andy Green, who served as D-backs third-base coach in 2015, has seen that

before.

"I was over there watching Robbie Ray a couple years ago have outings very similar to what Dinelson

Lamet had tonight," Green said. "That's not an atypical outing for a young guy. Do you like those

outings? No. But you learn from them."

"If you keep your head down after a bad start -- and there are going to be plenty of those over the course

of your career -- then you're going to end up having a bad season," Lamet said through an interpreter. "I

just have to be ready to bounce back."

Page 11: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseball...Jun 07, 2017  · hits and three earned runs (no home runs) in 9 2/3 innings in his last seven appearances. He was tagged for five homers,

11

For the second straight game, Hunter Renfroe provided the entirety of the Padres' offense, homering

twice -- once off Ray in the fourth and again off Tom Wilhelmsen in the ninth.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Lamb chops double: Lamb got the D-backs' offense going in the first, when he drove in a pair of runs

with a double to right. The hit came after Gregor Blanco doubled and Paul Goldschmidt was hit by a

pitch, and it kept Lamet from getting out of the inning unscathed.

"The big two-run double, I thought, was a key moment for us," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said.

"Kind of got us off on the right foot, and allowed us to play downhill baseball. Jake's having a tremendous

year. He is an offensive force, and he's hitting No. 4 for us for a reason, and he's had some big knocks for

us."

Speed in, speed out: Lamet's 1-0 fastball to Owings in the second came in at 96 mph, and Owings used

his quick hands to turn on it and drive it into the left-field bleachers a projected 429 feet from home plate,

per Statcast™. The ball had an exit velocity of 105 mph, but more importantly, the three-run homer

capped a five-run inning and broke the game open.

"The big three-run homer, I thought, was the dagger by Chris Owings," Lovullo said.

QUOTABLE

"I don't think he lacks for confidence. He'll bounce back." -- Green, on Lamet

HERRMANN EXITS WITH HAND SORENESS

D-backs catcher Chris Herrmann was removed from the game after striking out to end the fourth. He

appeared to tweak his right hand on a swing, but stayed in for the remainder of the at-bat. Lovullo said the

injury is not serious, and that Herrmann was removed as a precaution.

WHAT'S NEXT

Padres: Luis Perdomo posted the worst start of his career last month against the D-backs, but he's found

a groove since. On Wednesday, he'll get a rematch with Arizona in the middle game of a three-game set at

6:40 p.m. PT at Chase Field.

D-backs: Zack Greinke will get the start for the D-backs on Wednesday night against the Padres at 6:40

p.m. MST. Greinke is 6-1 with a 2.96 ERA over his last eight starts, and he allowed just one earned run

over seven innings in his last outing against the Marlins.

Cosart heads to DL, opening door for Diaz

Righty's elbow strain could lead to rookie's first career

start

By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com | @AJCassavell | June 6th, 2017

PHOENIX -- Padres right-hander Jarred Cosart was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a

right elbow strain. The club selected the contract of outfielder Jose Pirela to fill the open roster spot, and

it appears likely that rookie right-hander Miguel Diaz will make his first Major League start in Cosart's

place Saturday.

The extent of Cosart's injury is unclear, but he will be shut down for at least a week before he is re-

evaluated. Cosart struggled in his last three starts, walking 12 hitters over 10 2/3 frames. In seven outings

this season, he has posted a 4.88 ERA.

Cosart had surgery on his right elbow to remove a bone spur during the offseason, one of a handful of

injuries that have plagued his tenure with the Padres. He missed time earlier this season because of a right

hamstring strain, and also suffered a groin injury last September.

"Cosart's just had some elbow issues he's dealt with, honestly, for the last couple years," manager Andy

Green said. "He still has some things that are bothering him in there."

In Cosart's absence, Diaz, a Rule 5 pick, follows the path blazed by Luis Perdomo last year. Like

Perdomo, the Padres view Diaz as a starter, but they initiated him into the Major Leagues with a bullpen

spot, easing the jump from Class A to the Majors.

Diaz owns a 7.83 ERA in 20 appearances out of the bullpen this season. Like Perdomo a year ago, Diaz

struggled early, but has settled in nicely in May. Perdomo was inserted into the rotation early last June

when Andrew Cashner was placed on the disabled list. Now, it appears Diaz will get his shot.

"He's got a lot of things that provide intrigue to us, as a starter," Green said. "We're going to take a look at

that at some point in time. There's a good chance it's this Saturday."

13

To clear room for Pirela on the 40-man roster, the Padres transferred outfielder Travis Jankowski to the

60-day DL. Jankowski has a fracture in his right foot, and he won't resume baseball activities until late

June, at the earliest.

Pirela batted .331/.387/.635 in 48 games for Triple-A El Paso this season. He played in 15 games for the

Padres last year, going 6-for-39. He was in the lineup, batting sixth, for Tuesday's night series opener

against the D-backs at Chase Field.

"That's what everyone wants, to get here to the big leagues and to be playing right away," Pirela said.

"You just show what you can do, take advantage of the opportunity and show that you have things to

bring to the team."

Injured trio progressing, visit with Padres

Dickerson, Friedrich and Jankowski have been rehabbing

in Arizona

By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com | @AJCassavell | June 6th, 2017

PHOENIX -- The Padres' clubhouse was more crowded than usual Tuesday afternoon. And -- for the first

time this season -- it began to resemble the one the team envisioned before injuries occurred.

A trio of injured Friars joined the rest of the team at Chase Field prior to the team's series opener against

the D-backs. Alex Dickerson, Christian Friedrich and Travis Jankowskihave been rehabbing at the

team's Spring Training complex in Peoria, Ariz.

All three are on the mend from serious injuries, which landed them on the 60-day disabled list.

Dickerson went down with a bulging disk in his lower back at the start of spring. He had a minor setback

over the weekend, when he felt some tightness in his upper back on the day he was set to make his first

appearance as a designated hitter in an extended spring game.

"That cleared up," Dickerson said. "It wasn't related at all. It was an upper-back thing that got tight from

taking so many swings in the cage. I made the call to not play that day. Just by coincidence, it was the

first day I was supposed to play. I just decided it wasn't worth testing it."

Dickerson played Monday instead, and he made four plate appearances, including a double. Now, he

hopes to work his way onto the field.

"It's felt good," Dickerson said. "It's just about getting into baseball shape, feeling game-speed and

hopefully mixing in outfield soon."

Of the three, Friedrich is the furthest along in his recovery. He hasn't pitched yet this season, as he battles

back from a strained left lat muscle and some elbow soreness. But he appeared twice in extended spring

games, and will fly to Double-A San Antonio, where he is slated to pitch three innings in his first rehab

start Thursday.

Page 15: Padres Press Clips - Major League Baseball...Jun 07, 2017  · hits and three earned runs (no home runs) in 9 2/3 innings in his last seven appearances. He was tagged for five homers,

15

"I just want to see things in sync," Friedrich said. "I've been throwing bullpens and playing catch for God

knows how long. ... There's a lot of outside things that come into play in the game, so it's about getting

back to game speed."

Friedrich said he's tinkered a bit with his arm angle to make sure the ball comes out cleaner. His rehab

stint could be extensive, resembling a full Spring Training progression.

Jankowski suffered a fracture in his right foot in April, when he fouled a ball off his cleat. He spent nearly

a month in a walking boot, but he's out of it now and eager to begin the recovery process.

"It feels great, there's no pain," Jankowski said. "I could say it's getting better every day, but it's felt the

same for a couple weeks now with no pain. It's just kind of a rehab progression now."

Jankowski will undergo a CT scan on Monday. If that comes back clean, he will begin taking part in

baseball activity.

Looking to stay hot, Perdomo faces D-backs By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com | @AJCassavell | 12:50 AM ET

Evidently, Zack Greinke enjoys facing the Padres. On Wednesday, the D-backs right-hander will do so for

the 19th time in his career.

Through the years, Greinke has been at his best when he's facing San Diego. His 1.93 career ERA in 18

career starts against the Padres is his lowest mark against any team he's faced at least 10 times. In that

span, San Diego hitters have posted a .513 OPS against him.

Opposite Greinke will be right-hander Luis Perdomo. He's been extremely effective with his sinker this

season, inducing grounders at a 66-percent rate -- third in the Majors among qualified pitchers.

But Perdomo struggled last time he faced the D-backs. He was chased after three-plus innings on May 20,

allowing a career-high eight runs. However, in two starts since, Perdomo has seemingly found a groove --

including seven innings of one-run ball against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Three things to know about this game

• No Major Leaguer has more hits against Perdomo than Paul Goldschmidt. The D-backs first baseman is

7-for-13 with two homers and a double against the Padres right-hander.

• Of Ryan Schimpf's 34 career home runs, nine of them have come against Arizona. He also owns

personal bests in hits (17) and RBIs (18) against the D-backs.

• Greinke has gotten opponents to swing at 35.5 percent of his pitches out of the strike zone this season,

the second highest rate among those who have thrown at least 300 out-of-zone pitches.

Ray fans 11, Owings homers in Diamondbacks' 10-1 win Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Robbie Ray is on a roll, and the surprising Arizona Diamondbacks continue to take advantage of home field -- even when the ball ventures into fowl territory. Ray won his fourth straight game and recorded his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season, leading the Diamondbacks to a 10-2 rout of the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

Ray allowed the only earned run he's given up in his last four starts, and opponents have a combined nine hits off him in those four games. His 11 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings backed by some major run support gave Arizona the best home record in the majors at 22-8.

Even some unwelcome wildlife can throw off the Diamondbacks at home right now. Arizona star Paul Goldschmidt nearly scooped up a bird along with the baseball while fielding a bunt in the third inning. The small bird was sitting in the grass near the first-base line, and Goldschmidt momentarily covered it with his glove while scooping up Dinelson Lamet's bunt. The bird flapped its wings, wriggled free and flew away while Goldschmidt threw to second for a fielder's choice. "I didn't see it. I don't know," Goldschmidt said when asked about the play.

Chris Owings hit a three-run homer, Jake Lamb drove in four runs with a double and single, Gregor Blanco doubled twice and scored three runs and the Diamondbacks won their seventh straight home game, tying a season high.

Ray said he's improved his fastball command by working quicker and delivering faster.

"I'm feeling pretty good. Got a good game plan with my catchers," he said. "Just get the ball back and whatever they throw down, I feel comfortable with it."

Owings' second-inning home run, his career-high seventh of the season, gave the Diamondbacks a homer in 10 straight home games for the first time since 2011. Arizona scored five runs in the second inning, and has scored five or more in an inning for the seventh time at Chase Field this season.

Lamb became the first player in the majors to reach 50 RBI.

"If he went out and gave up three runs in the first inning, it wouldn't matter," Lamb said of Ray. "As an offense we're going to go out attack early and try to get some runs on the board. It obviously helps he's throwing up zeroes every single inning, but we're focused on what we're doing at the plate."

The Diamondbacks pounced all over Lamet quickly, scoring their first nine runs off him in the game's first three innings. Lamet (2-1) lasted just three innings and gave up seven earned runs and nine hits with five walks.

Ray (6-3) had his scoreless innings streak stopped at 27 2/3 innings, the third-longest in club history. Hunter Renfroe's solo shot in the fourth was the only run Ray allowed. "To me there is more angles on righties now than there used to be. He used to work away to righties. Everything is coming in with aggression," Padres manager Andy Green said of Ray. BIRD IN HAND

Padres face Greinke in Game 2 of D-backs series STATSJun 7, 2017 at 11:54a ET

PHOENIX — Arizona left-hander Robbie Ray again looked like an ace Tuesday.

For an encore, the Diamondbacks turn the ball over to their proven ace, Zack Greinke, as they seek a series victory in the second contest of a three-game set against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday at Chase Field.

Greinke is tied for sixth in the National League with eight quality starts, including seven in his past nine outings. He is rediscovering the groove that earned him a six-year, $206.5 million contract prior to last season.

While doing so, he found a new way.

Greinke has thrown his slider more than ever this year, more than one-fourth of the time. It is the greatest rate of his 14-year career by about one-third.

Not only has Greinke gotten more swings on pitches outside the strike zone by percentage than at any point in his career this year, according to Fangraphs.com, but also opponents have made less contact against him this year than in any other.

Despite dropping about 1 mph in fastball velocity this season, Greinke is averaging 10.44 strikeouts per nine innings, a micro-notch lower than his best rate (10.54) while with Milwaukee in 2011 and the only time he has averaged more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings in a season.

“It was coming out perfect every time,” Greinke said of his slider in mid-May. “Now it has just been good. Not as good as then, but the other pitches have been working, so you don’t need to rely on just one pitch.”

Greinke is 7-3 with a 3.06 ERA and an 0.98 WHIP in 11 starts. He pitched well in a 3-2 victory at Miami on Thursday, striking out eight in seven innings while giving up four hits and two runs (one earned). Greinke is 10th in the NL in ERA, fourth in WHIP and tied for fifth in strikeouts (92) with former teammate Clayton Kershaw.

He has had success against San Diego, going 9-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 18 career starts. Greinke has given up two runs against them in two starts this season but is 1-1 after losing a 1-0 compete game in San Diego on April 19, when he surrendered a homer to Erick Aybar in the eighth inning.

Aybar is 12-for-35 (.343) with five doubles, that home run and three RBIs against Greinke in his career.

23

Greinke will be up against Padres right-hander Luis Perdomo, who is 0-2 with a 5.01 ERA in nine starts. Perdomo has made quality starts in six of his last seven appearances, and he had his most effective start the last time out. He gave up one run and three hits in seven innings during a 2-1 victory over the Cubs on May 31.

His only hiccup in that stretch was against the Diamondbacks, when he gave up eight runs and 11 hits in three innings on May 20. He is 3-2 with a 4.76 ERA in eight appearances (four starts) against Arizona.

Perdomo will hope to get some offensive support from Hunter Renfroe, who had his second career two-homer game Tuesday. The right fielder leads NL rookies with 13 homers, and he is second with 29 RBIs.

“The power has never been in doubt,” San Diego manager Andy Green said of Renfroe. “It is just consistently working to positive counts. You see growths in at-bats that don’t end the way you want them to. Obviously, he squared two baseballs up really well, and he has that in him.”

Diamondbacks Pounce On Padres Renfroe Bashes Two Solo Shots In Loss

By Ben Rosehart

San Diego’s Hunter Renfroe had a pretty good night at the ballpark in Phoenix.

Two swings by the rookie right fielder turned into a pair of towering home runs against the

Arizona Diamondbacks.

But the visiting Friars needed a little bit more offense to keep pace Tuesday against the home

team.

Actually they needed a lot more offense.

The D’Backs stung Padres pitcher Dinelson Lamet for nine runs during the first four innings

and ran away with a 10-2 victory.

The rookie right-hander endured his worst outing since getting called up to the majors earlier

this season and suffered his first loss which dropped his record to 2-1.

The big blow came from Padres killer Chris Owings who blasted a three-run homer in the

second inning to push Arizona’s lead to 7-0.

Owings owns the Friars this season.

In ten games against San Diego, the 25-year-old is batting .333 (13-for-39) with four homers

and 13 runs batted in.

This is probably a good time to point out that he has just three home runs this season against

MLB teams not named the Padres.

Maybe Padres manager Andy Green should borrow a page from Joe Maddon’s playbook and

start walking the D’backs infielder Bryce Harper-style.

Regardless, San Diego’s promising rookie in right-field could not completely make up for the

promising rookie on the mound that struggled.

Jake Lamb tagged Lamet for a two-run double in the first inning and then proceeded to knock

in two more runs with a bases-loaded single in the second.

That set the stage for Owings three-run bomb which put the game out of reach.

Aside from Renfroe’s two bombs, the rest of the Padres offense was held to just three hits.

Arizona starter Robbie Ray struck out 11 and went 6.2 innings. Reliever Tom Wilhelmsen

finished the job.

Padres pitcher Luis Perdomo opposes Zach Greinke (7-3, 3.06 ERA) Wednesday evening at

Chase Field. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m.
