By Dominic Basulto
As part of a broader vision to make cities smart, connected and environmentally sustainable, innovators are working on creative ideas to update the urban streetscape — think trashcans, street lamps, bicycle counters, bus stops and
parking garages — for today’s digital lifestyle. Case in point: a new plan from New York City announced this month to transform the city’s outdated pay phone booths into a citywide network of 10,000 futuristic pillars that will give New York City residents and tourists free, super-fast and reliable Wi-Fi coverage.
1. New York City’s WiFi pillarsThe Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation has partnered
with a consortium of tech companies known as CityBridge to radically transform the city’s streetscape. By the end of 2015, CityBridge plans to replace the city’s outdated public pay phones with 400 super-thin Wi-Fi “Links” capable of delivering Gigabit Wi-Fi speeds to New Yorkers. And within a few years, that number could reach as high as 10,000 Wi-Fi “Links” located throughout the five boroughs, including many in residential neighbourhoods.
According to CityBridge, each “Link” will also offer residents the ability to charge digital devices, look up directions on touch screens, and provide civic feedback on specific issues. New Yorkers will also be able to make free phone calls anywhere within the United States. And best of all, these WiFi “Links” won’t cost city taxpayers a dime — the plan is to serve up ads on the Wi-Fi pillars, transforming citywide WiFi into a free municipal service subsidised by advertising sponsors. Over the first 12 years of operation, says CityBridge, this network will generate over $500m in advertising-related revenue.
Three brilliant ideasfor giving ageingurban streetscapesa modern facelift
New York City’s new Wi-Fi “Links” are coming to residential neighbourhoods like this one in Brooklyn.

2. Boston’s device-charging park benches
In a first-of-its-kind rollout, Boston is now experimenting with a new form of mobile experience: a dozen solar-powered park benches placed in select parks, playgrounds and sports fields throughout the city. By converting this solar power into electricity, these “Soofas” offer charging capabilities for multiple digital device owners, making them a social experience for mobile users as much as a technological experience. This “smart urban furniture” idea, which originally started as a project by the MIT Media Lab before being spun off as the company Changing Environments, is so creative that it was even featured at this year’s White House Maker Faire in June.
Eventually, say the three co-founders of Changing Environments, the plan is to expand the network of Soofas to build a smart energy infrastructure that collects urban data and informs citizens and city planners about everything from air quality to noise level by connect-ing to the Internet. In a statement about the launch of Soofas, Boston Mayor Martin J Walsh pointed to the potential of smart benches for Boston: “Your cell phone doesn’t just make phone calls, why should our benches just be seats?”
3. Singapore’s supertreesIn Singapore, the vision for the
city of tomorrow extends beyond just physical objects found on urban streets. Singapore has been experi-menting with innovative ways to update the look and feel of the city that fully integrates technology with
the surrounding natural environ-ment. In June 2012, for example, the city launched its “supertrees” — a set of 18 man-made, 164-foot-high trees that are capable of absorbing and dispersing heat, collecting rain-water and generating solar power. The “supertrees” themselves contain vertical gardens and at night, they even light up with digital displays. For now, these trees are part of the vast Gardens by the Bay landscaping project, but it’s easy to see how simi-lar types of supertrees might become
stand-alone objects beautifying grim urban streets while simultaneously functioning as nodes of urban sensor networks.
The next step, of course, is to con-nect all those man-made trees to the Internet. As a preview of what might happen in the future, Israeli company Sologic announced in late October the launch of “solar-pow-ered trees,” in which the “leaves” of the tree are actually solar panels that provide energy for WiFi connec-tions, while the “trunk” of the tree
contains outlets for electric-powered and USB devices. You can literally surf the Internet while connected to these eTrees. This concept, of course, is still in the experimental stage, but according to Sologic, both France and China are considering potential acquisitions of these solar-powered trees, each of which costs $100,000. The eTree was invented and devel-oped by solar energy expert Michael Lasry and designed in collaboration with artist Yoav Ben Dov.
These three ideas hint at the vast potential of transforming outdated urban infrastructure into smart, connected networks. Giving urban streetscapes a facelift is just the start. New “smart city” innovations promise to improve urban lives in tangible ways via cost savings, new ways to empower citizens and new types of apps and services offered to city dwellers. Across the world, the race is on to become a model “smart city.” And now with the Internet of Things, those cities might become smarter than ever.

celebrated National Day with tradi-tional dances, modern technology, some poetry, and a sea of burgundy flags. The ABP held the event early so that students could celebrate this important occasion and express their patriotism before they begin semes-ter examinations on December 10. Students begin winter break on December 16.
The celebrations started with an introductory welcome by ABP stu-dent Ibtisam Al Kuwari followed by Quran recitation from ABP students Jaber Al Tamimi.
Then, Moza Al Boainain, ABP Assistant Director for Student Services, addressed the gathering.
The event was organized by the ABP Student Services department in collaboration with the ABP Student Association and a number of enthu-siastic student volunteers. Faculty, staff and ABP students flocked to experience the traditional Qatari setting. The festivities included a poetry recitation by ABP alumnus
and Texas A & M freshman, Suhaim Al Qarni; a brief history of the State of Qatar presented by ABP student and Student Association President Wadad Al Jassim; and the traditional Arda (sword dance) performed by ABP students.
New this year was a live Twitter feed displayed on a huge monitor. It
allowed students to interact with one another during the event. They could tweet messages of congratulations and pass along best wishes to oth-ers whether they were in attendance or following online. Such technology allowed more individuals to partici-pate directly in the celebration.
Among the other attractions was a
traditional sadu tent furnished with traditional Qatari furniture, coffee, some local dishes, henna painting, a bouncy castle, a classic car show, and the traditional game of “keeram.” Patrons even brought a number of traditional animals such as Arabian horses, camels, and a falcon.

FOOD 7PLUS | TUESDAY 9 DECEMBER 2014
By Ellie Krieger
My take on shepherd’s pie has everything you want from the classic casserole: a layer of savory lamb under a
blanket of creamy mashed potatoes, all baked until bubbling with undeniable comfort appeal. But there is more to this version than meets the eye. Here, each luscious layer has a helping of vegetables.
Chopped sautéed mushrooms add meaty texture and flavour that meld with the lamb, allowing for crumbles of meat in every bite, yet a more modest helping of animal protein.
The potato layer incorporates cau-liflower, which blends seamlessly into the mash, lightening it almost unde-tectably. No extra effort is involved, because the potatoes and cauliflower are steamed in the same pot before they are whipped together.
I’m not in the camp that says you need to hide vegetables to get people to eat them. Rather, I think they should be celebrated front and centre, and eaten because they are appealing. But vegetables also happen to blend well into so many traditional dishes, like this one, and research indicates that sneaking them in really works to boost nutrition and reduce calories.
I know it did the trick for my fam-ily. When I served this at home for the first time, my meat-and-potatoes
husband was practically giddy with surprise when I told him how many vegetables were in the dish.
Shepherd’s Pie8 servings (makes about 12 cups)Both layers of this classic casserole
have a hidden helping of vegetables: The lamb is cooked with meaty sautéed mushrooms, and the mashed potatoes on top are blended seamlessly with cau-liflower. Together they give you all the flavour and comfort appeal you crave, in a lighter and more healthful way.
Make Ahead: The unbaked cas-serole can be refrigerated for up to 2 days. Add 15 to 20 minutes’ baking time when the shepherd’s pie goes straight from the refrigerator to the oven.
From nutritionist and cookbook author Ellie Krieger.
Ingredients1 1/2 pounds (unpeeled) Yukon Gold
or creamery potatoes, cut into 2-inch pieces
1 small head cauliflower (1 to 1 1/2 pounds), cut into florets
2/3 cup low-fat milk (1 percent)2 tablespoons unsalted butter1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt1 pound lean ground lamb2 teaspoons olive oil1 large onion, chopped8 ounces white button mushrooms,
stemmed, cleaned and finely chopped
2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme (may substitute 1 teaspoon dried)
2 tablespoons flour1 cup no-salt-added beef broth1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black
pepper1 cup frozen green peas
Method:Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Have a 9-by-13-inch baking dish or casserole at hand.
Place the potatoes in a large steamer basket over boiling water in a pot; cover and steam for 10 minutes on medium-high heat. Add the cauliflower to the basket; cover and steam for about 15 minutes, until the potatoes and cauli-flower are tender when pierced with the tip of a knife.
Remove the steamer basket and drain the pot; return the pot to the stove top (off the heat). Transfer the still-hot vegetables to the pot; use a potato masher to mash them to the consistency you prefer.
Combine the milk and butter in a microwave-safe measuring cup; micro-wave on LOW just until heated through and the butter has melted (do not boil). Stir into the mashed mixture, along with 3/4 teaspoon of the salt.
Meanwhile, cook the ground lamb in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until browned, about 5 minutes. Transfer the meat to a plate. Drain/wipe out any fat remaining in the skillet.
Heat the oil in the (same) skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, stir-ring to coat; cover and cook for about 8 minutes, until softened. Add the mush-rooms and thyme; cook uncovered, stir-ring occasionally, until the mushrooms are soft and their released moisture has evaporated, about 8 minutes.
Return the ground lamb to the skil-let. Sprinkle the flour over the skillet mixture; cook over medium heat, stir-ring, for 2 minutes, then pour in the broth and add the remaining 1/2 tea-spoon of salt and the pepper, stirring to incorporate. Once the mixture is barely bubbling, use a spatula to dislodge any browned bits from the bottom of the pan, then stir in the peas. Remove from the heat.
Distribute the meat mixture evenly in the bottom of the baking dish or casserole, then spread the potato-cau-liflower mash evenly over the meat-mushroom filling, making sure to cover it completely. Place the baking dish or casserole on a baking sheet (to catch any drips from bubbling filling); bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the mix-ture is heated through and the top is lightly browned.

The IDA award for CitizenFour follows the film’s best documentary win at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards this week. It was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award last month and is among 15 films advancing in the Oscars best documentary race.
CitizenFour gives a fly-on-the-wall account of Snowden’s tense days in a Hong Kong hotel and encounters with journalists as newspapers published details of NSA programmes that gathered data from the Internet activities and phone records of millions of Americans and dozens of world leaders.
US filmmaker Poitras shared a Pulitzer Prize this year for her role in publicizing the Snowden documents. She was awarded IDA’s Courage Under Fire award last year for her “conspicuous bravery in the pursuit of truth.”
The IDA, a 30-year-old non-profit organization that aims to sup-port documentary films and culture, also bestowed honors on veteran actor-filmmaker and Sundance Institute founder Robert Redford, who was given the career achievement award.
Cable network Show time’s Time of Death was named best limited series, while best short documentary went to HBO Films’ Tashi and the Monk, about a Buddhist monk and his 5-year-old charge Tashi.
Last year’s IDA best feature winner, Jehane Noujaim’s The Square, was nominated for an Oscar this year, losing out to 20 Feet From Stardom.
Angelina got skinny during Unbroken
Japanese singer-actress Miyavi, who plays a prominent role in Angeline Jolie directorial Unbroken, says the actress-filmmaker
became skinny because of her irregular eating habits during the shoot-ing of the film.
The film also features Garrett Hedlund, Jack O’Connell and Finn Wittrock.
Miyavi says that she felt great working with the Oscar winner Jolie, reports huffingtonpost.com.
“It was surprising how much she trusted me, all of us, on the set. She was so determined. I was also surprised how skinny she got. You know, she was not eating much. I felt so bad I was the only one who got fat during filming,” said Miyavi during an interview with HuffPost Live.
Kidman says 2014 has been really hard
Actress Nicole Kidman says 2014 has been a tough year for her professionally and personally after the death of her father.
The 47-year-old, who was here Sunday for the Australian premiere of Paddington, admitted that 2014 has not been her “favourite year”, both as an actress as well as personally following the death of her father Anthony Kidman from a heart attack in August, reports hol-lywoodreporter.com.
“Personally (it’s been) really really really hard,” she said.“My family underwent a massive tragedy. So not my favourite year.
But I try not to be ungrateful — I’m grateful to be alive.”Kidman said she would be spending more time in Sydney with her
mother and sister after losing her father.“We’ve gone through a really tough time this year as a family. It’s
so nice to be able to take care of each other,” she added. On the big screen, Kidman’s year has been mixed with Grace of
Monaco widely panned, The Railway Man receiving muted praise and Before I Go To Sleep also dividing critics and stalling at the box office.
Parineeti Chopra hopes 2015 is ‘better’
Of Parineeti Chopra’s three releases this year, two bombed at the box office. However, the actress says ups and downs are part of everyone’s
life and she hopes the new year will be better for her. In all of her three releases this year — Hasee Toh Phasee, Daawat-e-Ishq and Kill Dil — the 26-year-old played different characters.
While Hasee Toh Phasee showed her in a quirky character of a mad scientist, in Daawat-e-Ishq and Kill Dil, she was seen as a con girl and a bar dancer respectively. Out of these, only Hasee Toh Phasee had a fair box office performance. “Year 2014 had many ups and downs for me in everything — be it my personal life or professional, but I think that is what an actor’s life is,” Parineeti said here in an interview.
“You never get a consistent year every time. Sometimes it is good and sometimes it is not, and I think I was somewhere in the middle. But that’s okay,” she added. Now the actress has pulled up her socks for next year and says “2015 will be better”. As of now, Parineeti has not taken on any new project and she is busy reading scripts.
Shabana Azmi finds Sharmila ‘most gorgeous’ 70-year-old
On the birthday of Sharmila Tagore, veteran actress and activist Shabana Azmi described the Kashmir Ki Kali star as “most gorgeous”.
Sharmila, who was often seen on the big screen with late actor Rajesh Khanna in movies like Aradhana, Amar Prem and Daag: A Poem of Love, turned 70. The mother of actors Saif and Soha Ali Khan and designer Saba was one of the top Bollywood actresses who flaunted a bikini on screen in An Evening In Paris.
“Sharmila Tagore is the most gorgeous 70-year-old I know. Happy birthday Rinkudi and have a super year,” Shabana tweeted.
The two actresses worked together in films like Doosri Dulhan and Namkeen.
Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee too sent out birthday wishes, tweeting: “Happy Birthday to one of the most beautiful and gorgeous actresses Sharmila Aunty. Many many happy returns of the day. Love.”

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, starring Jennifer Lawrence as the young archer
who rallies the downtrodden citizens of a dystopian society, collected $21.6m to lead the box office charts for a third consecutive weekend.
DreamWorks Animation’s Penguins of Madagascar was second with $11.1m at US and Canadian theatres during a slow post-Thanksgiving weekend, when moviegoers traditionally turn their attention toward shopping.
“This weekend will wind up down versus the same weekend a year ago, when Frozen topped the chart with $31.6m,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at tracking firm Rentrak.
Horrible Bosses 2, starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as entrepreneurs who help to stage a kidnapping to get ahead, was third with $8.6m in sales for the three days from Friday through Sunday, according to Rentrak estimates.
Mockingjay has collected $257.7m since its November 21 release, accord-ing to Rentrak. Based on author Suzanne Collins’s best-selling book, the movie has a global total of more than $560m. The film’s performance put it on track to become the year’s second-highest grossing film, behind only Guardians of the Galaxy, early this week, Rentrak said.
But Mockingjay will likely finish below last year’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, according to Box Office
Mojo, which said November’s overall box office total was down 4 percent from 2013’s. For the year it forecast a 3 percent drop from the $10.6bn recorded last year.
Rounding out this week’s top five, Disney’s Big Hero 6 was fourth with $8.1m. It has totalled $177.5m since its November 7 release. Director Christopher Nolan’s space adventure Interstellar was fifth with $8m. The film starring Matthew McConaughey has total domestic sales of $158.7m.
The box office is expected to pick up significantly next week with two widely anticipated releases, comedian
Chris Rock’s Top Five which he also directed and wrote, and Ridley Scott’s epic Exodus: Gods and Kings.
Lionsgate distributed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1. The Penguins of Madagascar was released by Fox, a unit of Twenty-First Century Fox. Disney released Big Hero 6. Interstellarwas released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom. Warner Brothers, a unit of Time Warner, distributed Horrible Bosses 2.
Screwball comedy sequel Dumb and Dumber To, starring Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey, stayed in sixth place with a $4.2m haul.
The life story of theoretical physi-cist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything also was a non-mover, sticking in seventh place with a take-in of $2.7m.
The thriller Gone Girl starring Ben Affleck pulled in $1.5m this week for eighth spot.
Horror flick The Pyramid, about a group of archeologists exploring a cursed tomb, debuted in ninth place with a haul of $1.4m.
Rounding out the top 10 was dark comedy Birdman starring Michael Keaton, which pulled in another $1.2m.

Ajay Devgn-starrer Action Jackson has collected `280m in three days in India, but its sustainability is doubtful, says a trade analyst.
Made on a budget of about `750m, Prabhudheva’s latest directorial had minted around `190 in its first two days when it released on December 5.
“Considering the budget, the movie should’ve got a jump of minimum `150m or `200m, but that didn’t happen. It earned only `280m in three days. It might not sustain for long,” Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines said.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta had earlier described the actioner, which also stars Sonkashi Sinha, as “too routine and hackneyed”.
Sulemani Keeda, an independent comedy which also released along with Action Jackson, couldn’t do good busi-ness at the box office.
“Its figures are negligible,” said Thadani. IANS

Obesity may cut lifespan by up to eight years
Being overweight and obesity have the poten-tial to decrease life expectancy of individuals
by up to eight years, says an alarming study, adding that being overweight could be as bad as cigarette smoking.
“In terms of life-expectancy, we feel being overweight is as bad as cigarette smoking,” said lead author Steven Grover, professor of medicine at McGill University in Canada.
What is more, the study demonstrates that as obese and overweight individuals may also develop diabetes or cardiovascular disease earlier in life, this excess weight can rob them of nearly two decades of healthy life.
“Our team has developed a computer model to help doctors and their patients better under-stand how excess body weight contributes to reduced life expectancy and premature develop-ment of heart disease and diabetes,” Grover said.
The researchers used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (from years 2003 to 2010) from almost 4,000 individuals.
Their findings estimated that individuals who were very obese could lose up to eight years of life, obese individuals could lose up to six years, and those who were overweight could lose up to three years.
In addition, healthy life-years lost were two to four times higher for overweight and obese individuals compared to those who had a healthy weight, defined as 18.5-25 body mass index (BMI).
“The pattern is clear - the more an individual weighs and the younger their age, the greater the effect on their health,” Grover added.
The study was published in the journal The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology.
Neutralising allergen can better treat asthma
Scientists have devised a new approach to defeating asthma by targeting the trigger —
allergen — before it can spark an attack.Current asthma treatments can alleviate
wheezing, coughing and other symptoms felt by the patients, but they do not get to the root cause of the condition.
“To prevent many health problems, the ideal approach to treatment or prevention involves getting to the cause of a condition and targeting it directly,” said Clive Robinson from St George’s, University of London.
Scientists have found that dust mites are one of the most important triggers of allergic asthma.
So Robinson and his team wanted to find a way to neutralise mite allergens.
They identified a compound that binds to a major dust mite allergen and turned it into an inhalable powder.
They tested it on rats and found that it signifi-cantly dampened the animals’ immune response when they were exposed to a variety of allergens.
This compound and other similar inhibitors could hail a new direction in asthma treatment, concluded the research.
They findings appeared in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Older adults who undergo intensive brain training may be able to reverse so-called distractibility, a new study suggests.
“Older adults are more distractible than younger adults when we look at any task,” neurosci-entist Jyoti Mishra, the study’s lead author, said. “It turns out that, with training, older adults can surpass younger adults.”
Mishra of the University of California, San Francisco led a team of investigators who used sounds of varied frequencies to train aging rats and people to focus on a specific tone and ignore distractions.
The inability to focus on one goal among other options can create daily challenges for older people, the researchers write.
The 47 older adults who participated in the study, with an average age of 69, received 12 half-hour train-ing sessions at their homes over four to six weeks.
Fifteen younger participants, with an average age of 24, did not receive training.
The sessions required the older participants to focus on a specific tone from progressively more chal-lenging frequencies, the authors write in Neuron.
Training led to fewer distraction-related errors, and trainees’ memory and attention spans improved, the researchers write. In addition, recordings of the participants’ brain electric activity showed reduced responses to the non-target tones.
Similar results were observed in the study of rats, the researchers write.
As for the humans, older adults first scored 14 percent worse than the younger participants on a test of distractibility, Mishra said. After training, the seniors scored 31 percent better than their untrained younger participants, she said.
“One thing we really learned from the study was how to focus,” Mishra said. “By focusing the challenge on the distractions and by making the distractions more difficult, we could really change how the brain responds to distractions.”
Mishra and her colleagues are doing similar stud-ies with children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Those results are not yet published.
“We’re developing the tools and technology to help
people keep their brain sharper, but we’re not saying any such technology is available,” Mishra said.
But the study authors do appear to have positioned themselves to use the research in the marketplace, Zachary Shipstead said.
A cognitive psychologist and professor at Arizona State University in Phoenix, Shipstead noted that one of the authors, Michael Merzenich, lists himself on the paper as the president and founder of Brain Plasticity Institute, Posit Science, which markets brain-training exercises and partially funded the new study.
The senior author, Dr Adam Gazzaley, is listed as the chief science advisor of Akili Interactive Labs, which sells “electronic medicine,” “cognitive thera-peutics, assessments, and diagnostics that look and feel like high-quality video games.”
In addition, all four study authors have a patent pending for “Methods of Suppressing Irrelevant Stimuli, which was inspired by the research pre-sented” in the current study, the authors acknowledge.
Shipstead, who was not involved in the study, praised it for raising worthwhile questions, but cautioned that consumers should be aware that the questions need more study before the research can be used as a treatment.
“It’s the kind of research we should be doing,” Shipstead said. “We should be trying to come up with mental exercises that are going to help people out.”
Though trainees reduced their distraction-related mistakes, he said, he questioned whether their improvement transferred to more meaningful skills.
“The question is did top-down executive function improve,” Shipstead said. “Is the brain changing in a meaningful way, or are these changes just specific to the task?”
The study found that trainees increased the number of letters and numerals they could remem-ber, Mishra said.
“We’re really trying to figure out, what does the training do to the brain,” she said.
Her advice to aging adults trying to stay sharp: “If you’re paying attention really hard but being chal-lenged, you’re probably going to keep a really strong brain.”

With Christmas approaching, many children are filled with joyful expectations for this year’s presents. But today’s toys
have become increasingly high-tech, attracting not only kids but adults as well.
One popular item is “Kinetic Sand,” a toy that makes it possible to play with sand indoors.
The sand is made by mixing Swedish sand and a silicon-based polymer, which then undergo special processing techniques. Unlike natural sand, which is dry to the touch, Kinetic Sand has a tackiness to it and feels solid when grabbed or molded.
“Parents worry about hygiene when they let their kids play outside, so I’m sure there’s a place for it [in the market],” said Miki Kobayashi, chief executive officer of Rangs Japan Inc, a distributor based in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. When the company started to sell the product at the end of 2013, sales reached 60,000 packs in only a month. The sand has been a hit not only with children, but also adults, who say it feels like tororo konbu sticky seaweed, which makes it soothing.
Tomy Co released two models of toy robots this summer. Priced at 15,000 yen (about $123) excluding tax and targeted at children 8 years and older, “Hello! Mip” can move upright on two wheels thanks to a inverted pendulum sen-sor. The humanoid robot can avoid obstacles with the help of an infrared light and dance in response to hand-clap commands. When linked to a smartphone, its movements can be synchronised with phone functions.
“Hello! Zoomer,” a robot dog that sells for 15,000 yen excluding tax and is targeted at children 6 years and older, can recognise about 30 Japanese commands such as “Osuwari” (sit), and respond with more than 40 types of actions. It can even react to about 15 English phrases.
Remote-controlled aircraft have gained the attention of boys.
Recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s smallest infrared remote-control-led helicopter, “Nano-Falcon” measures 81 mil-limeters (about 3 inches) in length. It is made by CCP Co, a subsidiary of Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. based in Tokyo’s Taito Ward.
The aircraft is equipped with a gyro sensor, which is used in handheld digital cameras to minimize the effects of shaking. The miniature helicopter has many advanced features that go beyond what you might expect to see in a toy, including a flight stabilizer function that uses an added pair of propellers that rotate in the reverse direction.
Measuring only 59 millimeters long, the new “Pico-Falcon” is 30 percent smaller. The toy company plans to update the current Guinness record with the latest model, which went on sale in early December.
Some of the toys that kids play with nowa-days are modern versions of what their par-ents’ generation played with when they were younger.
Tamagotchi is an egg-shaped game gadget in which the toy’s owner raises an on-screen character. It was first released in 1996 by Bandai Namco Holdings Inc, formerly known as Bandai Co, and became a big hit. The lat-est version, named “Tamagotchi 4U,” has a local area network function that allows for
data exchange among the devices. Special “hot spot” terminals are set at shops across the nation, including toy stores, to offer special add-ons for the game that can be downloaded by touching the device to the terminal. Women in their 20s and 30s have reportedly accounted for about half of the toy’s buyers.
Toys have become more and more high-tech recently as prices of parts such as sensors have dropped. Moreover, consumers have been seek-ing higher-quality goods.
“Children can enjoy playing with only one toy by creatively coming up with their own ways to have fun. If they receive new toys one after another, they can get bored before they ever get absorbed in playing with them,” said Fumiaki Ibuki, the chief editor of Toy Journal, a toy industry magazine. “So you have to pay attention to how you’re giving them toys.”

Facebook unbundles its Groups function
GroupsFacebook unbundles its Groups functionIn some ways, Facebook is returning to its roots by breaking
out the Groups function, a key feature from the earliest days of the site. This feature has always been on Facebook, but it has been buried. Therefore, the app brings back some of the inti-mate feel of the social network before it grew into a behemoth.
Users can make private groups for sharing posts, pictures and videos, or opt for a public group to share with everyone.
Still, the app lacks features that would be nice to have. Sure, group administrators can change cover photos and descriptions. But you can’t do basic things such as edit posts. You also can’t search for members or see who’s viewed a post — all features that you can use on Facebook’s full site. Groups is a good browsing tool and supplement to Facebook, but not necessarily a full-fea-tured stand-alone app. Free, for iOS and Android. WP-Bloomberg

How to play Kakuro:The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number.Within each collection of cells - called a run
- any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

A chlorine gas evacu-ation turned a sub-
urban Chicago hotel into what looked like a car-toon come to life, as peo-ple dressed in brightly coloured rabbit, fox and dragon costumes were moved across the street to a convention centre.
The attendees of the Midwest FurFest were celebrating anthropomor-phic animal characters — meaning they’ve been given human character-istics — through art, lit-erature and performance.
But many others who were part of the evacuation but not dressed as animals wondered: Who are these characters?
Some questions about FurFest:
What is the FurFest? The annual convention draws thou-
sands of “furries” who come together in the Chicago suburbs to celebrate furry fandom or art, literature and performance based around anthro-pomorphic animals, according to the
FurFest website.Attendees said they came for fun,
but also for the spiritual and artistic aspects of the convention that have them celebrating animal characters from movies, TV shows, comic books and video games. Some also create their own characters.
How did it start? The festival’s roots go back to
the furry programming track of
Duckon, an annual sci-ence fiction convention. The furry track eventually grew enough to support its own convention. In 1999, Midwest Furry Fandom Inc. was created. FurFest was born shortly after and took place in November 2000 on the weekend before Thanksgiving. That date became tradition, until this year — the event’s 15th year, according to the website.
What goes on at these conventions?
In many ways a FurFest is like other conventions. There are panel discussions about costume design and other cartoon and character-related presentations, as well as dances and life performances. There are art and jewellery displays. Attendees go to dances and take part in dance contests inside the hotel and aerobic dancing outside. The festival also raises money for wildlife- and animal-related chari-ties, according to its website.
