by Russ and Pat Stressman This July, Russ and Pat Stressman hosted a Lions’ Club exchange student from Finland. Sofi a Peltola is a 17-year old young lady whose grandfather and grand-mother, Heikki and Eila Risku, are active Lions in LeVaasa/Old Vaasa and Vaasa/Vapaus Lions Clubs. Sofi a arrived on July 2, 2013, and left on July 30, 2013. During her month-long adventure, she was able to travel to the Upper Peninsula, Drummond Island, Mackinac Island, Flint, Detroit, Meijer Gardens, and –– one of her favorites –– Michigan’s Adventure. She was able to take in a Tigers’ ball game and shop at some of Detroit’s malls. Sofi a attended the annual Boccé ball event at Fruit-port’s Pomona Park, where she presented Lion President Keith Johnson with two banners; one from the Finland Lion student exchange, and one from her grandmother’s Lion Club. Lion Keith Johnson in turn presented Sofi a with a Fruitport Lions’ banner. Lion Heidi Tice asked Sofi a some questions about her grandparents’ Lion clubs to see if any differences were present. There were several. Michigan Lions participate in activities that support hearing and sight in the com-munity as their major cause. In Finland, the Lion Club’s major causes are devoted to the elderly and the young. Her grandparents make specialty cards and sell them to help fund their student exchange programs. They are confi dent that more cultural activities help build charac-ter and give youth a boost in the right direction as they grow. Some other activities to help the elderly are bazaars, and her grandmother makes many crafts throughout the year to sell at the bi-annual events. Heikki Risku joined
the Lions in 1969; and his wife, Eila, joined in 1993. They are the fi rst in Sofi a’s family to join the Lions. When I asked her why she thought they joined, Sofi a stated they probably wanted to be a part of something they feel is so important to the community. Both of Sofi a’s grandparents’ clubs are small; how-ever that is due to another difference in the Finnish Lions. They have many clubs in the same town. Sofi a told me some of the clubs are just women or just men and some are mixed clubs. Sofi a enjoyed her time at Fruitport, and really liked the fact that it had a small town feel, yet is close to big-ger, busier areas. She also really enjoyed the beach. She said she would recommend the exchange experience to other Lion students, and would also enjoy coming back in the future. Russ and Pat have had several school-year exchange students, and thought the one month was a short amount of time. They would have liked to give Sofi a more of an experience outside Michigan. They also would have liked to have Sofi a visit during a time when the Lions were meeting to get a feel for what Fruitport Lions really do for the community. Some of Sofi a’s “fi rsts” were to attend a family reunion, participate in Vacation Bible School, to attend a baseball game, and she was very surprised to see a community that only uses horses or bicycles on Mackinac Island. Some of her fi rst foods were pretzels and Jello, pretzels being her favorite. With such a positive experience for all participants involved, Russ and Pat Stressman encourage others in the Fruitport area to expand your horizons and host an exchange student.•
