Carmichael AuditoriumThe North Carolina faithful long have referred to Carmichael Auditorium as Blue Heaven

and the name certainly fits. Located among the tall pine trees at the heart of the North Caro-

lina campus, Carmichael has been home to the gymnastics program since it reached NCAA

status in 1982. The arena is currently under-going a multi-million dollar facelift which will

make it one of the top Olympic sports gymnasiums in the ACC.

The auditorium is named for the late William D. Carmichael Jr., a highly popular figure

on campus who served as the university’s comptroller, then as its vice-president. Prior to the

1976-77 season, 1,200 seats were added to bring historic Carmichael to its present capacity

of 8,010.

The gymnastics office is housed in Carmi-

chael, steps from the competition floor. The

facility also serves as home to the women’s

basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, as

well as housing offices for many other coaches

in UNC’s highly-successful Olympic Sports

programs.

The Carolina men’s basketball program

called Carmichael home from 1965 until its

move to the Dean E. Smith Center midway

through the 1985-86 season. Under coach Dean

Smith, the Tar Heels compiled a home record

of 169-20 at Carmichael.

2009

Prev

iew The North Carolina gymnastics team returns eight letterwinners and welcomes

four talented newcomers as it looks to continue its successful run in the East At-lantic Gymnastics League over the last decade. The Tar Heels have advanced to the NCAA regionals in seven consecutive seasons and have won the EAGL team title in three of the past seven years. To achieve those goals and reach even higher in 2009, the Tar Heels will have to replace the leadership they received last year from graduates Sarrie Rubin, Shawna Kelly, Angela Lauten and Alice Xu.

“We’ve got a great core of returning

competitors and we see strong potential in the freshmen class,” says head coach Derek Galvin. “We experienced an unfortunate stroke of injuries toward the end of last season, but we are hopeful to keep the team healthy as we prepare for 2009. Our primary focus is going to be raising every-one’s fitness level with a continued focus on execution and clean form in routines.”

Derek Galvin enters his 28th year as head coach of Carolina’s gymnastics program. He is excited about the team’s depth, which he believes will drive the Tar Heels to perform consistently from meet to meet. Galvin is excited to see UNC’s four newcomers perform at the collegiate level for the first time. He notes the challenges that student-athletes face stepping up to the collegiate level, but he is confident that the leadership of the returning gymnasts will allow the freshmen to give good effort and contribute to the team’s success.

In addition to senior Jennifer Valby’s anticipated contributions on vault and floor, Galvin and assistant coach Penny Jernigan are excited to see senior Rachel Schneider prepare on all four events, returning to the lineup after a season-ending ankle injury last year. The two will serve as co-captains of the Carolina gymnastics team in 2009.

“Rachel and Jen have put themselves in position to have their strongest year yet as Tar Heels,” says Galvin. “They both returned for their senior year with a higher fitness level and a sharper focus. Rachel has recovered from the high ankle sprain she suffered mid-season last year and she is looking very good on all four events. Jen is looking more confident on her two events, vault and floor exercise.”

The junior class of Teri Diamond, Tina Jacob, Christine Nguyen, and Kara Wright will once again be a significant part of the Tar Heel lineup. Following their strong showing as all-around competitors last year, Wright and Nguyen have been making steady progress during the preseason. They were both named to the 2008 EAGL All-League First Team in the All-Around and Nguyen was the EAGL Gymnast of the Year. Expectations are high for another solid season for both of them.

Diamond’s focus during preseason training has been primarily on beam and floor exercise, with a plan of increasing emphasis on uneven bars as the season progresses. Returning from an elbow injury she sustained early in the season last year, Galvin is encouraged by her progress. Jacob will again be one of the team’s top performers on balance beam, and is also capable on floor exercise and uneven bars as she proved last year.

Sophomores Karli Jones and Krista Jasper will play significant roles in the competitive lineup this year. Jones gained valuable experience last year as an all-around competitor and is expected to continue in that capacity. She had an im-pressive freshman year, and is now poised to add to the level of her performances with new skills and elements on each event. Forced to red-shirt last season due to a knee injury, Jasper hopes to be back at full-strength as an all-around competitor and is someone the coaching staff believes can have a significant impact on the

team’s scoring potential.

“Krista has applied a tenacious focus in overcoming a knee injury she suffered prior to the competitive season last year,” says Galvin. “Her progress on balance beam, uneven bars and floor exercise this year has her on the verge of making the line-up on each of those events.”

The Tar Heels welcome four new gymnasts to the squad this year, includ-ing Taylor Brown, Morgan Evans, Zoya Johnson, and Elizabeth Lindley. Johnson is a skilled performer on uneven bars and Galvin feels confident that she will be part of the lineup. She is also a candidate to compete as an all-around competitor. Lindley’s strongest events are uneven bars and balance beam. She has shown signifi-cant progress during the preseason and her focus and intensity in training has been impressive. Brown, who has looked par-ticularly capable on floor exercise in the preseason, also will vie for a spot in the lineup on the other three events. Evans underwent arthroscopic knee surgery at the beginning of the school year, prior to team training, and the coaches are hopeful she’ll be back at a competitive level by the beginning of the season.

“Morgan’s progress has been most notable on balance beam thus far, but the other events are beginning to come along too,” says Galvin. “We’re hopeful she will be ready to compete on all four events later in the season. Overall, the freshmen class will provide much needed depth to this year’s team.”

The Carolina gymnastics team has been working hard in its preparation for competition and the team believes its has the right mix of talent to achieve its goal of becoming EAGL Champions.

“Overall, we feel this could well be one of our most talented teams,” says Galvin. “We will continue to prepare and put forth good effort in practice, but we are always excited to begin competition when it comes time in January.”

VAULTDespite losing the contributions of Rubin and Kelly from the vault lineup, the

Tar Heels are excited about the potential on this event. The top returnees include Valby, Nguyen, Wright, and Jones. Valby has been a consistent performer on vault throughout her three previous years at Carolina and her preseason training reflects a certain confidence that she will once again be a stronghold for the team. Nguyen will be among the top vaulters in the Carolina lineup and will try to de-fend her title as the 2008 EAGL champion. In addition, Wright’s training on vault shows strong potential for the use of a Yurchenko with a 1 ½ twist. Jones, adding a twist to her vault, is once again expected to be in the vault lineup as well.

Among the experienced competitors, Galvin also sees Schneider and Jacob as potential additions to the vault lineup. Newcomers Johnson, Brown, and Evans will also compete for line-up spots on vault. Galvin believes Johnson in particular has the potential to deliver a powerful performance.

UNEVEN BARSUneven bars could be a very exciting event for the Tar Heels this year. Al-

though the graduation of Kelly leaves a big hole in the lineup, Carolina is expect-ing Schneider and Diamond to return to the bar lineup. Diamond’s skill level is gradually returning on uneven bars as her elbow gets stronger. Galvin is hopeful she will return to form on bars as the season progresses.

eaGl Gymnast of the year Christine nguyen is the Tar heels’ top all-arounder.

2009 PreviewSchneider, Nguyen, Jacob, Wright,

and Jones, have progressed well during preseason, and they will provide a strong base of experience for the Heels on bars. Nguyen’s execution on uneven bars has become more consistent. Jones has a dynamic new release move on uneven bars, which she is excited to reveal in 2009. Wright is training a new combination of skills on uneven bars that will add more difficulty to a routine that features one of the most impressive dismounts used in college gymnastics. Jacob has been training a new release move combination on uneven bars that will raise the level of difficulty in her routine, and Schneider is training new combinations on bars that will enhance her scoring ability.

Galvin is expecting freshmen John-son and Evans to continue their progress on uneven bars and become regulars in the Tar Heel lineup. Johnson’s routine is particularly impressive. Lindley and Brown are also developing exciting routines and should make contributions on the event.

“We have five people who com-peted on bars for us last year and we have quite a bit of depth, especially compared to last season,” exclaims Galvin. “Our focus on bars is on clean execution, hitting handstands, and, of course, sticking dismounts.”

BALANCE BEAMLike last year, Carolina possesses

abundant depth on balance beam. With Nguyen and Jacob, the Tar Heels boast two of the top beam performers in the EAGL. Wright and Jones were consistent performers on beam as well. Diamond, who was one of the team’s top beam competitors before she was injured, has performed well in preseason training and is expected to have well-executed routines on balance beam. Sch-neider has looked good on beam during the preseason and was ready to step into the lineup last year before her ankle injury.

“We have six experienced competitors,” says Galvin. “Christine’s style and presentation on balance beam will once again be her signature as our top competi-tor on the event. Balance beam is also a strong event for Krista and we have high hopes for her joining the lineup. In addition, Zoya, Morgan, Taylor and Elizabeth, all display a style and skill level on beam that will help the team by providing solid depth on the event. “

FLOOR EXERCISEInjuries last season to three of Carolina’s regular competitors on floor eventu-

ally had an affect on the Tar Heels’ scoring potential. Even though the circum-stances gave other team members an opportunity to step up and replace their injured teammates, it also revealed a need for greater depth. In anticipation of the 2009 season, Schneider and Valby have applied an impressive effort in preparing to strengthen the floor exercise line-up. They will be supported by experienced competitors Nguyen, Jones, and Wright, with potential help from Diamond, Jacob and Jasper. When fully healthy, Diamond, Jacob and Jasper can all provide well executed, dynamic routines.

“On floor exercise Christine will be using new music and choreography that will accent her grace and fluid movement on that event,” says Galvin. “Kara’s solid performances on floor exercise and balance beam last year have developed into routines that display a more confident style and presentation. Teri will again be asked to execute solid routines on floor exercise. Karli has been focusing her preseason efforts on enhancing the artistic quality of her routine to match the

dynamic power of her tumbling. Krista and Karli both have new floor exercise music and choreography this year. The styles they display in their floor exercise routines are quite different, yet both routines are captivating and very entertaining. Among the freshmen routines, Zoya’s new floor exercise routine, with its unique movements, is sure to be a fan favorite. Taylor’s most impressive event in preseason has been floor exercise. She combines a graceful style and presentation with strong athletic tumbling. Morgan also has a very artistic style and her routine should score well within the college format.”

SCHEDULEThe Tar Heels face a challenging schedule in 2009 with meets

against several nationally-ranked squads – all on the road. Due to renovations at Carmichael Auditorium, Carolina will not have any home meets in 2009.

“We’re excited about the schedule because it gives us an op-portunity to go up against some of the top teams in the nation,” says Galvin. “It’s going to be challenging, because we won’t have any home meets this year, but we will have at least three competitions at NC State, just down the road for our local fans.”

For the first time, the gymnastics program will travel out of the country with a meet in Cancun, Mexico. Opening the 2009 competitive season at the Cancun Classic on January 2nd, the team will face some strong competition from Stanford, LSU, Oregon State and Michigan, four of the top 10 teams in the country last year.

After a two-week break, the Heels will then travel to the nation’s capital to compete in the George Washington Invitational. At the end of January, the Heels will make the long haul north to face EAGL rivals New Hampshire.

The Governor’s Cup this year will be in Raleigh. The uniqueness of this meet is a product of combining the scores of North Carolina and NC State and compar-ing them to the two schools from the state of Maryland. A week later, the gymnastics team returns to Raleigh for the Sweetheart Invitational.

The Tar Heels also will go on the road this season to face the likes of LSU, Kentucky, and Alabama. As a traditionally strong gymnastics conference, the meets against SEC rivals will test the mettle of the UNC gymnasts.

The EAGL Championship this year will be hosted by N.C. State on March 21 with the NCAA regionals and championships to follow in April.

As always, the Carolina gymnastics team is looking forward to sharing the ex-citement of this season with all the Carolina gymnastics fans, friends, and family.

Junior Kara Wright earned all-eaGl honors in vault, balance beam, floor exercise and

all-around.

sophomore Karli Jones was a first-team all-conference performer in the all-around.

Only the third gymnastics coach in North Carolina history, Derek Galvin en-ters his 28th year in Chapel Hill. Galvin, who has been at the helm of the programsince it became an NCAA sport in 1982,

has an overall record of 318-179-1.

Galvin’s Carolina program has experienced an explosion of success in the last decade. The Tar Heels have won three East Atlantic Gymnastics League titles in the last seven years and Galvin, or his assistant Penny Jernigan, have earned nine coach of the year honors.

While the program has narrowly missed its goal of competing in the nationalchampionships, it has come within one place of advancing from regionals to nationals in three of the last six years.

In 2004, the team came within a whisker of making the NCAA finals, placing third at the Southeast Regional, just .025 points behind the second place team. The previous year, the Tar Heels missed the necessary second-place spot by .05 points.

Last year, Carolina was beset with numerous injuries, but still finished 15-6 over-all and advanced to the NCAA regional championships for the seventh straight season. The Tar Heels won their first three meets, including a win over eventual EAGL champion NC State, and were ranked as high as No. 14 in the country. Season-ending injuries to Krista Jasper, Teri Diamond, Sarrie Rubin and Rachel Schneider forced major changes to the event lineups. Still, Carolina had several outstanding individual accomplishments, including Christine Nguyen, who was named EAGL Gymnast of the Year.

Galvin’s teams have historically excelled both in the gymnastics arena and in the academic environment, and 2008 was another outstanding season in the class-room. A total of 10 UNC gymnasts were named to the EAGL All-Academic Team, including Shawna Kelly, Angela Lauten, Alice Xu, Teri Diamond, Tina Jacob, Krista Jasper, Sarrie Rubin, Rachel Schneider, Jennifer Valby and Kara Wright. Kelly, Lauten and Xu earned the honor for the fourth consecutive year.

In the last 23 years, gymnasts coached by Galvin have been chosen for the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches’ Scholastic All-America Gymnastics Team 106 times. In 2008, sophomore Kara Wright was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large second team.

Galvin coahed Natalie Halbach, a 2003 graduate and the first female student-athlete in the Atlantic Coast Conference to receive theWalter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, the most prestigious academic award given by the NCAA. Halbach wasalso the second Carolina gymnast to be honored as a GTE Academic All-America, following in the footsteps of former Tar Heel gymnast Stacy Kaplan.

Tar Heel gymnasts have had their share of succes in the arena as well under Galvin. Courtney Bum-pers, a 2006 graduate, achieved the ultimate indi-

vidual honor in 2005 - winning floor exercise at the NCAA championships with a perfect score of 10.0. It was the second straight floor exercise national crown for Bumpers, who also earned All-America honors in 2003 with a fourth place finish on balance beam. Christine Robella earned All-America honors in 2005 on floor exercise. It was her first All-America honor and the fourth in Carolina’s history.

Galvin has a long history of success at Carolina. In his first year as head coach in 1982, he guided the Tar Heels to a fourth place finish at the Southeast Regional. His 1985 and 1986 teams both finished third at the meet after placing first in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

In addition to UNC’s accomplishments as a team, Carolina has been represented every year at NCAA regionals by at least one individual gymnast. In 2003, Bumpers and junior Anna Wilson were the first Carolina gymnasts since 1986 to qualify for the NCAA national championships as individuals. Bumpers recorded the then-highest finish ever of any ACC or EAGL gymnast with her fourth place finish on the balance beam in the final round before achieving her championship status in the next two years on floor exercise.

In 2004, the Tar Heels had arguably the best year in school history. Galvin wasnamed the NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the third straight sea-son after directing the team to a 22-1 record and a second place finish in theEAGL Championships. The Tar Heels earned a regional appearance and the .955winning percentage was the highest in school history. It was a record-breakingyear in team and individual results with the Tar Heels setting school records onevery event except balance beam and scoring above a 197.0 in four meets. Bum-pers, who earned the program’s third-ever 10.0 in 2003, turned in seven perfect scores on floor exercise and surpassed her previous school record on the vaultand in the all-around competition. She has the school’s highest all-around totalwith a 39.725 and the highest vault score with a 9.975. Olivia Trusty set a recordon uneven bars with a score of 9.95.

Galvin was named the EAGL Coach of the Year for the fourth time in 2005,leading his team to a regular season record of 14-4-1 and the conference champi-onship. Carolina finished the year ranked 23rd in the country and tied for thirdplace at regionals.

Galvin has been involved in gymnastics in various capacities throughout hislife. He was a member of the Carolina men’s team before the discontinuation ofthe program in 1974. Staying involved in the sport, he spent four years coachingat Gymdancetics, a training center established by Fred Sanders, former coach ofthe Carolina men’s team. Under Galvin’s guidance, team members dominatedstate competition and advanced to the United States Gymnastics Federation championships.

In 1978, he became director and head coach of the Triad Gymnastics Academy. The following year he accepted an administrative position with the research and

consulting firm of Syllogistics, Inc., but remained active in area gymnastics. His first season as head coach of the Tar Heels was in 1982.

Galvin has made contributions to many other ar-eas of the gymnastics community. In 1982, he was named to the NCAA Southeast Region Advisory Committee and served as committee chairman for several years, including the 2005 season. He was the gymnastics site coordinator for the 1987 United States Olympic Festival in Chapel Hill. He is an active member of the NACGC and has served as a clinician of several USAG and NCAA Y.E.S. clinics.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Galvin moved to Arlington, Va., with his family when he was 10 years old. He competed on two state champion-ship gymnastics teams under coach Jesse Meeks at Yorktown High School and graduated from Carolina with a psychology degree in 1976. Gal-vin and his wife, Debra, have two children. Both graduated from college in May 2003 - their son, Derek Sean, fromUNC and their daughter, Ryan, from the Univer-sity of Virginia.

es advancing toward graduation, building Character and Developing leadership

Student-Athlete Services at the University of North Carolina encompasses threeareas that play an integral part in the collegiate experience of every UNC studen-tathlete. Those three areas are Academic Development, Student-Athlete Develop-ment and Leadership Development.

• ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENTThe Academic Support Program is the main service utilized in advancing UNCstudent-athletes to graduation. The program assists student-athletes in explor-ing their interests and abilities, enjoying a broad educational experience, and reaching or exceeding their academic goals. “Our young people are students first and athletes second and that will always be the case at the University,” says UNC Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. “That is a credit to our coaches, administrators and support staff, but most of all, our student-athletes. Their accomplishments in the classroom are very impressive.”

During the 2007-08 academic year, 286 Carolina student-athletes made theACC Academic Honor Roll, which requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for the year. In the fall of 2007, 169 student-athletes made the Dean’s List, and 134 did so in the spring of 2008.

The Academic Support Program is housed primarily in the Pope Academic Support Center, which is equipped with study facilities, tutorial rooms, a computer lab, a 128-seat auditorium, counselors’ offices, and state-of-the-art video and computer equipment. At the center, students meet with staff to discuss course selection, major and career exploration, academic progress and academic eligibility. The Academic Support Program helps freshmen transition from high school to college through a variety of academic programs such as academic counseling, individual tutoring, group review sessions and supplemental instruction.

• STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENTBuilding character in UNC student-athletes is the main charge of Student-Athlete Development. Through Carolina Outreach, Tar Heels are involved in a variety of projects and organizations on campus and in the community. The UNC Department of Athletics has partnered with Gatorade and the UNC School of Public Health for a national pilot program called Get Kids in Action, in which Tar Heel student- ath-letes visit local elementary schools to encourage children to exercise. The Carolina Dreams program allows young patients at UNC Children’s Hospitals to attend Tar Heel sporting events with UNC student-athletes. Other recent activities have includ-ed building a house with Habitat for Humanity, cooking meals at Ronald McDonald House and cleaning up the roadways through the Adopt-a- Highway program.

Student-Athlete Development also seeks to develop student-athletes on a personal level through a variety of speakers who address issues like nutrition, gambling, relationship communication and substance use. Career Development helps UNC student-athletes look beyond college with resources such as career counseling and workshops on resume writing and interviewing skills.

• LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENTThe primary outlet for Leadership Development is the Carolina Leadership Acad-emy, started at UNC in 2004. As the nation’s premier leadership development program in collegiate athletics, the Carolina Leadership Academy develops, chal-lenges and supports student-athletes, coaches and staff in their continual quest to become world class leaders in athletics, academics and life. The Academy consists of three programs:

CreeD ProgramLeadership training begins in the freshman year. All leadership begins with per-sonal leadership, therefore freshmen are taught skills to effectively lead themselves. Training consists of monthly meetings featuring keynote speakers and small group discussion. Upperclass student-athletes serve as peer mentors and discussion lead-ers. Special focus is on responsibility, accountability, making good choices, ethics and character building.

rising stars ProgramDesigned for a select group of “high potential” sophomores and juniors, the program provides future leaders with insights, strategies and skills necessary to become effective leaders. The program includes monthly meetings, interactive exercises and action learning experiences.

veteran leaders ProgramThis program is designed for team captains and veteran studentathletes. It provides advanced leadership training and support, teaches the critical skills and insights necessary to be effective vocal leaders and provides a strong peer network. Student-athletes meet regularly to learn and reinforce leadership principles and share successes, frustrations and lessons.

Carolina CreeDAs a University of North Carolina student-athlete, I pledge to makeevery effort to abide by the Carolina CREED as a show of my commitmentto the University, the Department of Athletics, my team and myself.

C - I will know and embrace the tradition and culture of this greatUniversity and its athletics departmentr - I will respect myself and otherse - I will pursue excellence in my academic work by striving toreach my academic potential while preparing for a career of significancee - I will excel athletically by committing myself to performance excel-lence, team success and continual improvementD - I will develop the capacity to effectively lead myself and others

The Annual FundDonations through the Annual Fund offer The Rams Club the

opportunity to meet immediate funding needs-primarily the funds

needed to bridge the difference between the endowment’s yield

and the actual scholarship costs and other important projects for

Carolina’s student-athletes.

The Rams Club’s Scholarship Endowment Trust is the largest athletic

scholarship endowment in the nation. The Scholarship Endowment

Trust is built upon gifts from Carolina supporters who have

endowed Full or Half Scholarships in support of student-athletes

which provide in perpetuity the support to a broad-based athletics

program.

As the Rams Club’s planned giving program, Carolina Forever

offers donors an opportunity to make a lasting impact by involving

Carolina Athletics in their estate planning. Carolina Forever’s

mission is to insure that the university continues to provide in

perpetuity the unique opportunity to experience what it means to be

a Tar Heel student-athlete in a broad-based athletics program.

Sports EndowmentsThe Sport Endowments program provides additional funding for the

operating budgets of each of the 28 sports. Donors can make gifts

to an individual sport with the yield from that trust made available

to the appropriate coach for use in budget-enhancing activities like

recruiting, team travel, assistant coaches’ salaries and more. With
