Ministry

This Sunday marks the end of our August request month. To end the series we will be discussing God in our schools which was suggested by Rosemarie Lee. This is a timely topic since school will be returning in just a few short days.

Remember the days when at school during morning announcements that we all stood up to sing O Canada and then recite the Lord’s Prayer? In many schools in the late 80’s the Lord’s Prayer stopped being allowed in our schools and some would say that was the end of religion in schools. The praying of the Lord’s Prayer in a public space has been a controversial topic in many communities in places like schools, council chambers, court rooms and governments. Some may say that there is no place for religion or God in a public space because we are no longer a Christian society, yet God is all around us.

There is a World Religions professor named Dr. M. Thomas Thangaraj at

Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia who once said, “Are we a culture that has freedom of religion or freedom for religion?” This is a question school leaders have wrestled with for decades.

On Sunday we will looking at how God is still in our school systems and how religion continues to play a role in the development of our children.

This Sunday is also a special Sunday as we will be offering a backpack blessing. We invite all children and youth to bring their school backpacks to be blessed at the front of the church. We also invite any adults to bring their bags and briefcases too so a blessing for them can be offered. All are welcome.

This week’s readings are:

Matthew 6:5-15

SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON’S CHARITY

CHALLENGE TO SUPPORT UNITED CHURCH CAMPS - October 19, 2014

Running or at a Leisurely Stroll – It’s Your Call Walk, Run or Cheer for United Church Camps – where lives are transformed.

Nurture Youthful Leaders – Protect Wilderness Environments Support Your Camps: Where young lives are awakened to community

By participating in the Waterfront Marathon you’ll support the Toronto United Church Council, an organization that has nurtured camping programs for more than 100 years – and continues to support camping programs for children and youth in south central Ontario. Tens of thousands of children have benefited through healthy wilderness camping and their introduction to their first roles as leaders in community. Our campers are from all faiths and no child is turned away for a lack of funding. At five camps – Simpresca, Lake Scugog, Sparrow Lake, Big Canoe and Ryde Lake, children and youth are challenged to be their best. Toronto United Church Council is strongly committed to working with the Camps of Toronto Conference to renew their infrastructure and to continue to develop Council’s capital reserve funds for each camp to draw on.

Since 2008, Council and the camps have participated in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon’s Charity Challenge. Each camp sends a contingent of walkers and runners who take pride in giving back to their camp and enjoy a day of physical activity with one another. This year, the cumulative fundraising from the six years of our participation in the marathon topped $100,000.

Council has: • established a capital reserve fund for each Camp that can be accessed for capital renewal projects. • continued to build its own Camp Capital Care Fund to offer grants to the camps to offset the costs of property taxes and other capital expenses. • continued to make its camp properties available rent free for United Church camping programs.

This year's marathon will take place on Sunday October 19 2014. Events include the full marathon, half-marathon and 5k walk. As an incentive for you to help, if you run or walk with us you will have your individual marathon run/walk registration fee covered. Your support for our team will help keep the camps safe and modern for decades to come. If you would like to join the "Pass It On" marathon team, please contact Ali Hayes at (905) 771-5124 or [email protected]. You can also make a pledge to the Pass It On! walkers and runners. GRANT’S WORLDGRANT’S WORLDGRANT’S WORLD

Where has the summer gone? This weekend is Labour Day and marks the end of the summer months of

vacationing, spending time with family and enjoying the great outdoors. Labour Day also marks the

beginning of a new school year. On Tuesday our children head back to school for another year of learning

with new teachers, new schools, and new classmates. It is also a reuniting with old friends not seen since

June.

For some this weekend also marks the beginning of a new season of life when many young adults head off

to post-secondary school away from home for the first time and parents become empty nesters. It is a time

of great transition and we pray to God that the transitions we go through are positive and life giving.

The start of September is also a time of new beginnings for St. Andrew’s. On Tuesday, we have a new

Intern minister beginning with us. Sula Anne Kosacky is a candidate for ordained ministry and will be

placed at St. Andrew’s for the next 12 months. She will be working with us 2/3 time and the rest of her time

she will be completing a CPE Unit at the Brampton Civic Hospital. A CPE Unit is a Clinical Pastoral

Education Unit. This is an advanced training course for pastoral care in a hospital setting. Many people

taking CPE courses may become trained as a Chaplain. Anne will be in Brampton on Mondays and

Wednesdays and at St. Andrew’s on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Anne will have a number of

learning goals that she will be working on while she is with us. This is an exciting time for our church as

Anne will be the fourth Theology student we had had with us in recent years. We have become known as a

teaching congregation in the Toronto Conference. Please extend and welcome to her as she begins her

ministry with us.

Blessings to you.

See you on Sunday,

Grant

Six-year-old Angie and her four-year-old brother Joel were sitting together in church. Joel giggled,

sang, and talked out loud.

Finally, his big sister had had enough. You're not supposed to talk out loud in church." "Why?

Who's going to stop me?" Joel asked.

Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, "See those two men standing by the door?

They're hushers."
