A Note From Our Pastor

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We the Christian Community of St. Thomas More, in an atmosphere of hospitality, are dedicated to

proclaiming the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through excellence in worship,

education, and service to others.

We believe that the nurturing of the community Around the Eucharistic Table is extended.

Through gatherings which further strengthen and support us. We shall pursue this mission faithfully through the power of the Holy Spirit and the gifts

and talents of our members.

THE GIFT OF LIFE

Two weeks ago we were reminded that 47 years ago on January 22, 1973, abortion became legal. Since then, 70+ million unborn lives have been destroyed. Presently, a million and a half abortions are performed each year in the United States. This is a terrible tragedy for our nation.

This reality is an opportunity for Christians to do some reflecting and then join together in prayer to effect a change of heart in this nation which in so many ways continues to devalue the sacred gift of human life. Your commitment to, and support of, life affirming solutions to our country’s social challenges is very important. Pray too, for the mothers and fathers of unborn children, that with the help of their families and others who care, they overcome their fears or indifference and choose to protect and nurture the life they have brought about.

MICHIGAN VALUES LIFE INITIATIVE

Recently the Michigan Catholic Conference announced that on December 23, 2019, petitions with the signatures of 379,418 citizens were submitted to the Secretary of State to ban the dismemberment abortion procedure in our state. Catholic parishes (including St. Thomas More) were pivotal in gathering signatures to end this brutal practice. If you took the time to add your signature to the petition, I thank you for your witness to life.

Have a faith-filled week and lets remember each other in prayer.

“Souper Bowl of Caring” Capuchin Soup Kitchen

The St. Thomas More Youth Group has partnered up with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit in order to raise money for their “Souper Bowl of Caring.” Over 40 million Americans are living with food insecurity every day. Since 1990, Souper Bowl of Caring has generated over 153 million in cash and food donations.

This Super Bowl Weekend, February 1 & 2, the STM Youth Group will be in the Gathering Area after each Mass with Soup Pots to help raise money for this worthy cause. With your help, we know we can continue to feed those in need and grow the mission of the Souper Bowl of Caring!

Thank you for your kindness in supporting the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in

their mission to feed our hungry!

Worship

Each moment that you spend in His Eucharistic Presence

will increase His divine life within you and deepen your personal relationship and

friendship with Him.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be on Thursday, February 6

beginning after the 9:00 am Mass and ending

with Benediction at 12 Noon.

We need to make sure that at least two adorers are present while the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. Please sign up at the information

counter for a time slot so that we can assure that at least two individuals are with Jesus

throughout the time of exposition.

What is a Mass Intention?

Before the beginning of each Mass, we hear, “We are asked to remember in our prayers…” followed by one or more names. Why do we do this?

These are individuals for whom the Mass is being offered because someone requested it. Mass can be requested for someone living or dead, either ourselves or others. We can and should intercede with our personal prayers, but since the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life,” the Mass possesses a power beyond our personal prayers, uniting our prayers with those of the whole Church.

Typically, when someone requests a Mass intention, he or she includes an offering as well, although it is not required. Some refer to this as “paying” for a Mass but should not be viewed as buying grace. (That’s the sin of “simony”). Instead, we make a free-will offering to help defray costs of the things necessary for Mass (like altar bread, wine, candles, and altar linens). More importantly, our gift allows us to participate in the sacrifice by offering something to help make the Mass possible.

Anyone can request a Mass intention either with the weekend receptionist or the parish office. It is a beautiful part of our Catholic faith that has been with us since the early church.

What We Learned this Week in Our Faith Formation Classes

This past week, the children learned about five Kingdom of God parables. A parable is a short story told by Jesus to reveal a secret (mystery), and can be found in the Bible. The Kingdom of God is never clearly defined, instead Jesus uses images and stories about ordinary people doing ordinary things.

In the first three parables of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31-32), the Yeast/Leaven (Matthew 13:33), and the Seed of Grain (Mark 4:26-29), something great comes out of something very small. There is a power in the seed, the yeast and in the grain that allows it to become so much more than what it started out to be. The parable of the Seed of Grain teaches God’s Kingdom is always growing, starting as a small grain that grows into an ear, and then into a stalk, and then multiplying into a field of many stalks: from something very small comes something great. The children may come to relate it to Jesus coming to us as a helpless baby though he is Lord, who conquers death. After each parable is shared with the children they are allowed to ponder God’s work in themselves and in the world. The last two parables, the Parable of the Precious Pearl (Matthew 13:45-46), and the Hidden Treasure (Matthew 13:44) encourage awe and focuses on the joy of finding something so precious it is worth selling all we have to possess it. The Parable of the Hidden Treasure teaches the Kingdom of God is of great value. It is God’s gift freely given to humanity, and cannot be earned. It is the source of unimaginable joy. It is wonderfully valuable, it is worth selling all we have to possess it. The power of God is present and at work building up the Kingdom of God in us and all around us. It is life itself: the mystery of transformation and growth from small beginnings to large outcomes. It is priceless and given to us by God, and it invites a wholehearted response from us.

7th and 8th Grade continue on their spiritual journey of preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please keep all of the faith formation children and their families in your prayers, especially those who will be receiving the Sacrament of First Reconciliation in a couple of weeks.

Stewardship TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE

Unleash the Gospel EVANGELIZATION

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord by John Hannigan

Today’s Gospel recounts a remarkable episode when Jesus was 40 days old. At a time appointed in the Law, “Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord” at the Temple and offer sacrifice (Luke 2:22-24). They came to participate in a public liturgy. What’s remarkable are the reactions of Simeon and Anna when they encounter Jesus. Inspired by the Holy Spirit (2:25-26), Simeon recognizes the infant is the Messiah, the promised Savior. Simeon prays, “my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (2:20-32). The prophetess Anna also recognizes who Jesus is and immediately begins to call people’s attention to Christ: “Coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem” (2:38). That is evangelization, and even Mary and Joseph “were amazed”!

Perhaps more remarkable about the Presentation is that it happened at all. In Jewish Law, the sacrifice was for purification of the mother, but why would the Lord need to be “consecrated to the Lord” like other first-born sons (Ex 2:2, 12-13)? He is the Lord, the Son of God. The answer lies in the Temple, which was very important to Jesus. His family went there every year to worship with the community of believers. Once He even stayed behind in His “Father’s house” (Luke 2:39-52). A week before His Passion, He rode as Priest, Prophet and King up to the Temple to cleanse it of the money changers. At the instant He died on the Cross, the curtain to the Temple’s Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom. Jesus comes into a sacred worship space to fulfill the Law, to a place He sanctifies by His presence.

Today, Jesus is presented to us in His Body and Blood in the Mass, to fulfill and sanctify worship in our parish church. We present our children to be consecrated by Baptism into His Body, the Church. We bring our young children to Mass each Sunday and invite our older children to join us in the public liturgy. At the end of Mass, after we encounter our Lord in the Eucharist, like Anna, we are sent to proclaim to all we meet, by the way we live our lives, the Kingdom of salvation, the new Temple Christ raised up in 3 days (John 4:20-24). That’s remarkable. That’s amazing.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, when Mary and Joseph brought their infant Son to the Temple in obedience to the laws of their Jewish faith. This is a beautiful, and in many ways, mysterious feast — and one that is filled with lessons for a stewardship way of life.

Our Gospel passage from Luke, recounting the details of the Presentation, teaches us a stewardship lesson through the example of St. Joseph and the Blessed Mother, the “Holy Parents.” Even knowing their Son was God, they still carefully observed the faith practices of their day bringing him to the temple “to present Him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord.” Later in the passage we read that, “When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to their own town of Nazareth.” The Holy Parents were good stewards of their child, teaching Him to live in obedience to the practices of their faith from His infancy and throughout His “growing up” years.

Those of us entrusted with the care of children — whether our own children, godchildren, nieces, and nephews, grandchildren, or students — have a vital role to play in the faith formation of these young ones. We, like the Holy Parents, must steward these children well, forming them in the faith by both instruction and example throughout their lives.

What a privilege and high calling we have as Christian stewards. Let us take these stewardship lessons to heart and present our gifts and our young ones joyfully to the Lord.

Jesus our Light and salvation is here.

He brings with him cleansing, consoling, and communing.

He also compels a choice.

Choose him now, run to him, he is here and he is calling!

Stewardship Thoughts Presentation of the Lord

The Scripture readings today speak of God’s promise to send a Savior to mankind. The prophet Malachi compares God’s messenger to refined precious metals. In the Letter to the Hebrews, the author explains how Jesus came to help not angels, but the descendants of Abraham. In the long form of St. Luke’s Gospel, the evangelist tells the story of Mary and Joseph taking the baby Jesus to the Temple. In accordance with the law, He is consecrated to the Lord. Simeon, a holy man, and Anna, a prophetess, are in the presence of the infant Jesus and witness the fulfillment of the ancient prophecies. As Paschal stewards, we strive to build a personal relationship with Christ and, in turn, be docile to His will. May this feast day move us, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to embrace Christ and, in a spirit of evangelization, do His work in our acts of stewardship with our parish communion.
