H.E.A.R.T has heart! After the first non-racial elec-tions in South Africa Profes-sor Denis Goldberg founded the development organisation Community H.E.A.R.T. in London in 1995 to help to improve the living standards of Black South Africans more quickly.

Together with partners in South Africa Community H.E.A.R.T. gives priority to health, education and recon-struction training projects based on the principle of self-help. They try not to run

projects but give support to local initiatives, small and large.

With the support of German friends Professor Goldberg established Community H.E.A.R.T. e.V. in Essen in Germany in 1996.

It was from here that Denis secured a very generous do-nation of R30 000 for KMA, which was channelled through The Sentinel Experience in Hout Bay, another of Denis’ initiatives.

With this money KMA was able to purchase A bass amp, a guitar amp, a bass guitar, 4 beginner violins, 1 full size violin and a keyboard bag. Additionally we were able to finance 2 terms of music les-sons and various admin costs. We wish to thank Denis - from the bottom of OUR hearts - and all who were involved in this wonderful gift, including Marshall Music for the generous discount they gave us.

each! A lucky day! Thank you to Sue Kievits who managed to raise the money we needed to buy the pupils a travel lunch pack each and to Hout Bay Super-spar for the delicious rolls.

And, to the pupils, thank you for being such well

KMA pupils spent the morn-ing of June the 16th at the Baxter Theatre, where we were entertained by young musicians from a number of music organizations in Cape Town, describing and demon-strating instruments and musi-cal styles. Out of the 15 snug blankets donated to the lucky draw, 4 of our pupils won one

out and shone on our day of inspiration… we had stories re-enacted by Bonfire, as they were told by refugees and South Africans from all walks of life. As we were con-fronted by our individual as-sumptions and judgements we all came to realize one funda-mental truth: we are all pre-cious and unique. We can only hope that one day human kind learns how to respect

itself enough to honour the story in each of us. Thank you to Bon Gertz for the use of the Community Centre and to St Elmo's for providing the pizzas!

On May the 16th 2009, events around the world celebrated sharing life stories in commu-nities and organisations. KMA hosted just such an event in collaboration with the fabu-lous Bonfire Theatre Com-pany. As luck would have it the 16th yielded a miserable, stormy and wet day so we postponed our proceedings to the following week.

In June this year KMA presented another soiree at the Spinney Retirement Village, this time enlisting the talents of some of our wonderful teachers… Anthea Haupt treated us to some nostalgic songs with her magnificent voice; Gerhard Maree showed his two students

present that day how to REALLY play classical guitar; Bergitta Lamp-brecht dazzled the audience with Spanish and Italian favourites on the violin; Dillion Banda shared some traditional Zimbabwean songs on Mbira and Dwyn G played some Bach and Debussy on piano. Last but not least, pupils Michael Kievits and Thomas Sanders played beauti-ful renditions of Classical Guitar arrangements. Both were keen to play in another soiree as soon as possible when they discovered they had each earned R60 for the gig - Thank you Spinney folk for your generous contribution to the dona-tions box! And, thank you as always to Pam Harper for arranging this lovely morning for us.

Spinney Residents Spin In Music

Jimi Sibindi, a well-known and respected figure in IY, is one of the most innovative gentlemen you will meet. Amongst his many ideas for making a living, making

Whilst we await the outcomes of proposals, we were wondering… anyone out there wanting to sup-port this fabulous idea? Using all recycled materials this project is environmentally friendly and em-powering local artisans while teaching our children valuable skills and heritage.

marimbas to sell to the public is one we hope to support, funding allowing. KMA has developed a project with Mr Sibindi which would involve 8 children (2 groups of 4) from across Hout Bay. Whilst one group is learning how to play the marimbas, the other group will be tutored in making their own set. The groups swap after an hour of instruction. At the end of the project the pupils pro-duce their own set of marimbas and are able to sell them to

What To Look Out For In Term 3

Who is KMA? In 2007 Kronendal Music Academy was formed to address the ongoing lack of cul-tural stimulation that face the youth and the community as a whole in Hout Bay, with particular emphasis on the under-privileged and economically challenged areas. Coupled with this was a burning desire to provide a platform with which to initiate racial and social interaction and integration amongst the three very distinct communities in Hout Bay: The “white afflu-ent” valley residents, Hangberg - tradition-ally a fishing village - and Imizamu Yethu informal settlement.

Starting from scratch KMA began develop-ing individual tuition, group activities, en-sembles, workshops and community events, as well as a Youth Choir of 65 pu-pils. Since day one, all of our activities have successfully united members from these

three areas and the Academy has become synonymous with integration development.

With a total of 47 students involved (funded as well as paying pupils) we have 10 teachers giving individual music tuition in cello, violin, classical guitar, rock and jazz guitar, piano, vocal training, recorder, drum kit, flute, clarinet and saxophone. Added to this we have 14 children involved in groups: beginner recorder, theory and a jazz band.

We have provided countless workshops to the pupils as well as the community and we have established a weekly community sing-ing evening for anyone who enjoys singing. It is free of charge and has proved to be a very effective tool for social interaction and integration. We have the support of the local Cultural Community Centre building and Kronendal Primary school, which serve as our base and teaching venues.
