Recent Missions - LCROSS

LCROSS impact on moon on 9 October Centaur stage impacted first while

“shepherd” vehicle recorded data Nine LCROSS instruments successfully

captured each phase of the impact sequence: the impact flash, the ejecta plume, and the creation of the Centaur crater

Centaur impact left crater 92 ft. (28 m) wide Plume of vapor and fine debris detected Spectrographic and other analysis is

underway.

Earth, August 2005; Venus, October 2006, June 2007; Mercury, January 2008, October 2008, September 2009

Enter Mercury orbit: March 2011. Mission Plan : Orbit for one Earth year, studying

Composition and structure of Mercury’s crust Topography and geologic history The nature of its thin atmosphere and active magnetosphere, The makeup of its core and polar materials

Recent Missions - Spirit

Mars Rover Spirit has been operating on Mars for 69 mos. Became stuck in soft soil in Spring 2009. Light soil in image below was exposed after Spirit

attempted to free it’s wheels. Also battling memory problems

NASA conducted complete launch simulations of an Orion mission to ISS to verify operations tools and processes for Constellation Mission Ops. IMSim (Integrated Mission Simulation), gave a networked system of high

fidelity “physics” simulations, performed the real time launch and ascent simulation and post insertion burn.

The DON (Distributed Observer Network) distributed the IMSim visualizations to remote team members and saved them for playback later.

Both tools are part of the Constellation Modeling and Simulation Team (MaST).
