The October Knight of the Month Brother Billy Wirt is dedicated Knight of Columbus. A member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Billy is an usher at the 11:00 Mass and is our Council Warden. He is a dependable man we often call upon to help when needed. Billy has worked Bingo kitchens and is a member of the 4th Degree. He seldom misses any council meetings... I am proud to announce him as Bishop Ireton Council 6189 October Knight of the Month. (GK David Brennan) The October Family of the Month Picking this family was

not a difficult decision. Richard and his wife Wilma are often seen around the Bishop Ireton Center and attend most of the functions we have. Richard can repair anything electrical. Wilma is a rare entity and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She never hesitates to do something when the need arrives. We are fortunate to have Richard and Wilma in our Council and I am proud to announce the Satterfield family as Bishop Ireton Council 6189 Family of the Month for October 2012. (GK David Brennan)

State of BIC…

The BIC Board met on Tuesday the 4th of September, 2012. Maintaining a facility requires managing our budget and keeping the building in great shape. The BIC Board does that task well. We discussed the following:

1. The awning sealer was applied on Sat. the 8th by the following Brothers- Rick Deplato, Tony Toler, Gene Zimmerman, and me. A second coat will be applied on Sat. the 15th weather permitting. Thanks for the help.

2. Blessed Virgin Grotto- Clouds have been painted by Clara Agosto. Benches and fountain have been purchased. Carpet has been laid by Brothers Gene Zimmerman and Frank Cuffe. The area should soon be finished completely for your enjoyment...

3. Rental and Usage Policy amendments changes- Members who use either the Main Hall or the Club Room will be required to pay a $100 refundable deposit upon use. If his plans change he must notify the Manager at least 30 days before the event or forfeit the deposit. When a client rents the hall without also having us cater the event, a fee of $175 will be charged, for us to open, monitor its use, and secure the building after the clients use.

When you come to the BIC, stop by the Grotto and see the difference a little thought and planning can do. Our thanks and gratitude goes to all who help made this possible. (BIC President Jerry Duncan) Little Angels Interment Bon Secours Hospital and Bliley’s Funeral home have an arrangement to provide burial services, free of charge, to families who aren't able to pay for the normal services... The next service will be October 3, 2012, Wednesday at 9:30 AM, with the Gibbons Assembly. Take the time to observe, say a prayer, and reflect on the lost lives of these little infants. Please make an effort to attend.

Father Leo

Father Leo appears to be doing well. While he is somewhat less mobile than he was, he still gets around (and continues to drive). Last tracked him down via his cell phone in Montreal, Quebec Province, Canada where was spending a few days. He continues to reside in the Bishop Peterson House in Manchester, New Hampshire but hopes to make a move to a private apartment at some point. He is now the chaplain at the St. Teresa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Manchester and is happy to be back to work again.Father Leo remains on our Council roles and receives the INFORMER each month keeping up with Council news. He expects to visit us here in Virginia over the Christmas holidays. His address is: Bishop Peterson House, 221 Orange Street, Manchester, NH 03104. He would love to hear from his friends.

1 -”Welcome Aboard" to our newest member, Jose Cruz. Jose took his 1st Degree at our last meeting and is a parishioner at St Augustine. 2 - "Welcome Aboard" to Dennis Mulligan, a transfer from Bergenfield, NJ. Dennis also attends St Augustine. 3 - Happy Birthday to Billy Wirt. Billy had a milestone birthday that now entitles him to be called "LIFE MEMBER" and will never have to worry about being suspended. Congratulations on this superlative recognition. To a man, we are "anonymous" in our opinion that he is one fine Knight and a great Warden, too. 4 - Your FINSEC has been to class on using member management to automate Council records. Due to this training, I may be able to generate your membership's annual billing and membership cards by computer. 5 - Our Council records database shows many (quite disproportionate) members as 1st Degree only. The only members who have current status would be our 4th Degree members and anyone who has recently joined the Council as 1st Degree and progressed through the Degrees. If the membership degree does not jive with the highest degree you have taken, please send me an e-mail ([email protected]) to notify and I will update Supreme's records. The actual date is not important as the field will allow the degree taken with unknown date. I would like to complete all this before the January billing cycle begins. Vivat Jesus! Military Retiree News… The White House released its 396-page report Thursday that includes details on the $54.7 billion cut the Defense Department will sustain in 2013 should Congress not agree on a deficit reduction plan to avoid sequestration by Jan. 2. The report detailed the 9.4 percent cuts attached to Defense Department discretionary spending in 2013. This makes up the majority of Pentagon funds to include operations and maintenance, research, and procurement budgets. Another 10 percent will be cut from all mandatory defense programs — the few accounts not subject to congressional appropriations. The sequester could or will affect how many weapons, bullets and missiles troops carry into combat. The cuts will also dictate how many new houses are built on bases and how much is invested in new commissaries. As promised (?) by President Obama, funding for military personnel accounts to include pay will not be subject to sequester cuts. Department of Veterans Affairs funding has also received an exemption. Congress and the White House must come to an agreement to make a $1.2 trillion cut to the federal deficit by Jan. 2 to avoid the sequester cuts dictated by law and agreed upon by the Republicans and Democrats. Otherwise, Congress must pass a bill providing an exception to the military. Democrats have stood staunchly against such a move warning it would come at the cost of other domestic programs. How do you win a war with no ammunition??? Do you vote? Stay tuned…

Bingo – always a challenge to manage…

Some Bingo Games seem to go forever; others like the St. Augustine Games struggled and eventually folded. St. Augustine closed their games on June 29. Some of those patrons have been going to St. Augustine since the first game started. That was a long time run for the church. Lack of volunteers and possibly the economic situation were contributing factors. As for our games, we continue to ask for volunteer help. Volunteering can be good, both for you and for the council. We need to think about it. Our bingo monies depend upon us to do the right thing and that is to keep the games going. If we were to hire additional help, there would be fewer monies for BIC and the Council. Which do you want?

Membership

A coordinated membership Recruitment Blitz is an all-out effort to maximize your membership teams' efforts by canvassing an entire parish on one weekend, gathering the names of prospective new members for follow-up. Talk to your parish priests and see if this can happen in your church. We need new members and there are a lot out there just waiting to be asked. Do you have a form 100 in your pocket? PGK Earl Williams did that right. He always had a form 100 to offer a prospective member. He could be

seen talking before or after a Mass with his form 100 in hand. WE can get new members – make the effort.

Your Insurance Agent…

UP TO AGE 80, YOU MAY STILL BE ELEGIBLE TO BUY PERMANENT LIFE INSURANCE: Permanent life insurance may still be an option for you and your spouse, even in retirement. The Knights of Columbus now offers a number of permanent products up to age 80, including our Single Premium Whole Life (SPWL) policy. With a single payment, you’ll have a guaranteed death benefit for your beneficiaries. This could be critical if your retirement savings are not likely to provide for a surviving spouse’s needs. Halloween’s Christians Roots

How about a little history lesson? When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind? For a lot of people, Halloween has become synonymous with candy, costumes, scary stuff, witches, ghosts and pumpkins. But do you know the Christian connection to the holiday? The true origins of Halloween lie with the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany. For the Celts, November 1 marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter. The night before the new year, they celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the dead, including ghosts, goblins and witches, returned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires. When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centerpieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cider, traditions which may sound familiar to you. But where does the Christian aspect of the holiday come into play? In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow Even or holy evening. Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day. The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the communion of saints, which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time.

Ladies Auxiliary News

Dear Ladies, Welcome back! We had our first meeting on Sun. Sept. 9, at 6:30 pm. We started our meeting by saying the rosary, a practice that I value very much and hope to continue. Our next meeting will be at the same time on Oct.14th. I want to thank Clara and Fran and the men on the BIC Board for the hard work that has been done to remove the rocks and redecorate Mary’s Garden in the foyer. would like to dedicate this newly refurbished area to The Virgin Mary before our next meeting. Please join us at on Oct. 14th for a short blessing ceremony. On Sat. Sept. 29th we will meet at the Center at 10 am to decorate the tables for the Past Grand Knights Dinner. This should only take a couple of hours, since we will have plenty of help from the knights. The Knighhave asked the ladies to bring desserts for the dinner. I would like to thank all of you ahead of time for the help and goodies. We will have a tag sale again this year on Nov. 10th, the Saturday of the Brunswick Stew. Council 6189 Activities Calendar October 2012

All Saints Day : In the early days the Christians were accustomed to solemnize the anniversary of a martyr's death f or Christ at the place of martyrdom. In the fourth century, neighbouring dioc eses began to interchange feasts, to transfer relic s, to divide them, and to join in a common feast; Solemnity celebrated on the first of Novembe r. It is instituted to honor all the saints. Fall Prom : Help is needed. Please call the BIC for details

Columbus Day, which is annually on the second Monday of

October, remembers Christopher Columbus' arrival to the

Americas on October 12, 1492. This holiday is controversial

because the European settlement in the Americas led to the

demise.
