Opening Compassionate Intentions1

3 – Buddhist fundamentalists take refuge in Buddha (the teacher),

Dharma (the teaching)

and Sangha (the taught).

Practitioners of Buddhist tantra teach that

the mind, speech and body of Green Tare

represent the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha respectively.

They also teach that on deeper level the mind, speech and body,

of this archetype of compassion’s enlightened activity,

also represent the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya and Nirmanakaya.

Fundamentalists teach that at the moment of enlightenment

one’s mind becomes one with the Dharmakaya,

the all pervasive, all knowing mind of all the Buddha’s;

one’s subtle energy manifests

in a paradise of bliss-inducing light (just like Green Tare’s pure land),

in a body of bliss-inducing light (just like Green Tare) the Sambhogakaya;

from which one’s compassion causes infinite number of bodies to emanate

in whatever forms are required

to meet the needs of all living beings, the Nirmanakaya

This liberal teaches that the Nirmanakaya, Sambhogakaya and Dharmakaya

are just metaphors for the mastery of compassion, mindfulness and insight;

wherein one is able to practice them:

spontaneously, habitually, easily and effectively.

Many centuries ago, the fundamentalist (of the patriarchy) Karma Chakme Rinpoche

taught the essence of keeping the vows of refuge

was cultivate absolute faith in the so called three jewels (Tri Ratna in Sanskrit)

of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

But this liberal (of the matriarchy) teaches that faith is a rigidity,

a manifestation of intellectual and emotional grasping

that is the antithesis of the flexibility of the matriarchal path

of passive, permissive flexibility and fluidity;

and therefore teaches that the essence of keeping the vows of refuge

is to enthusiastically traverse the path of mindfulness, insight and compassion

with the intention of mastering them for the two purposes5.

4 – the fundamentalist Karma Chakme Rinpoche

taught that the essence of keeping the vows to Tantra Samaya

was unwavering faith in one’s teacher

as an enlightened manifestation of one’s Yidam;

the archetype of enlightenment that one works with

in the “Tantra of bringing rebirth into the path of the Nirmanakaya”

as well as the “Mahamudra of compassion and openness.”

However this liberal teaches that the essence of keeping one’s tantric Samaya,

is to enthusiastically apply the advice of one’s teacher

while rationally noticing the effects of such behavior;

for if they undermine one’s mindfulness, insight and compassion

then one must reevaluate one’s comprehension and application of the advice

as well as the wisdom and compassion of the one who gave it.

are to non-violently practice mindfulness, insight and compassion

as well as apply the advice of one’s teacher

for the two purposes of oneself and others.

That is why we cherish the intention

of all the needs of all beings being met,

whether they walk, crawl, swim or fly.

Which is one of the reasons why I choose NOT to participate

in the exploitation of others as a consumer.

Why should a dairy cow be torn away from her new born calf,

only to be slaughtered; just because I want a snack?

Compassion for: non-human animals, the environment,

and our own health, longevity and lucidity

are excellent reasons to embrace a whole-food vegan lifestyle.

If this interests you your teacher will be happy to recommend books and other resources.

Performing hollow-body, slapping burpees

while performing this recitation three times, are not mandatory,

but the author has found them to be bracing, invigorating

and a support to regular contemplation and meditation.

The Union of Compassion and Openness

An ancient text explains the Ten-syllable mantra in verse:

Om to the transcendent subduer,

Ar-ya Ta-re, I bow,

homage to the glorious one

who frees with Ta-re;

with Tu-ta-re you calm all fears;

you bestow all success with Tu-re;

with the sound of Sö-ha

I pay homage.

In other words the mantra could be translated as saying:

“Hey! I rely upon the archetype of enlightened activity

to cultivate greater: freedom, peace and success; make it so1!”

as a liberal take on Mahayoga

whereas Tibet’s Kagyu sect could describe these contemplations

as a liberal take on the Creation Stage practices.

1 – Profound refers to the Buddhist school of thought

that emphasizes active contemplation of impermanence and interdependence

to increase one’s insight.

Tibet’s Nyingma sect could categorize these contemplations

as a liberal take on Atiyoga,

also known as the Great Completion Stage practices (or Dzokchen).

In Tibet this practice of To-kal’s “leap-over illusion” contemplation

denotes two forms of contemplation that support

the practice of Trekchö’s “slice through illusion” meditation

(the latter is AKA Atiyoga or the Mahamudra of Awareness and Openness).

In this, the second of two types of leap-over contemplation

we use eight exercises to explore the futility of grasping

at any: thing, being and phenomena.

Tibet’s Kagyu sect could categorize these contemplations

as a liberal take on the Completion Stage practices,

that are also known as

“bringing death into the path of the Dharmakaya (or Insight’s mastery).”

Tibet’s Nyingma sect could describe these meditations as a liberal take on Atiyoga

or the Great Completion Stage practices (or Dzokchen in Tibet),

this is also known as “Slicing-through illusion” meditation (or Trekchö in Tibet);

and is sometimes referred to as “relaxing into the nature of mind.”

Tibet’s Kagyu sect could also describe this as a liberal take on

“bringing death into the path of the Dharmakaya (or Insight’s mastery).”

There are some that would describe these twelve sets of exercises as

the Mahamudra (or union) of Awareness and Openness.

This is also what Karma Chakme Rinpoche referred to

as “meditation without an object.”

Two Paths

In the Tao Te Ching we read of two paths in any endeavor,

Lao Tzu warned against the former and encouraged the latter:

the path of yang or the path of yin,

the path of patriarchy or the path of matriarchy,

the path of rigidity or the path of flexibility,

the path of elitism, or the path of egalitarianism,

the path of control or the path of permissiveness,

the path that craves certitude or the path that embraces ambiguity,

the path with authority as the source of truth

or the path with truth as the source of authority,

the direct path or the circuitous path,

the active path or the passive path,

the path of competition or the path of cooperation,

the path or cruelty or the path of compassion.
