Dear Holy Week People, In Holy Week we celebrate the most sacred mysteries of our own Christian faith when we gather to remember Christ's dying, through which he destroyed our death, and His rising, through which he restored our life. The mysteries we celebrate during these days are not only something long ago, something far away, but are as close as our own and our world's struggle with living and dying. To deepen our experience of life together, and to celebrate Christ's dying and rising to new life, we need to gather to-gether, to tell the stories of God, to break bread together. We need to celebrate together, to be at peace with one another, to give thanks as a people who continually grow in faith. The liturgies of Holy Week invite us to ponder the meaning of Christ's life, death and resurrection. I encourage you - yes, I urge you - to be present at the celebrative moments in the life of the Christian Faith Community. For it is when we gather, that we are most truly Church - the People of God. Our complete Holy Week schedule is listed on the next page. I would also invite you to celebrate with us our Commu-nal Reconciliation Service this Monday at 7:30 p.m. Holy Week provides an opportunity and a window to put life in perspective. The following story is powerful. Take time this Holy Week to connect the pieces of our lives with the Paschal mystery — the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Allow the Lord Jesus to heal those parts of our lives that ache for fullness, healing, new life and a deeper trust in God.

Project: Humility

A group of high school students were assigned to do a service project at a community outreach center. The center was located in a neighborhood several miles away from their school. When they arrived for their orientation, they encountered a homeless man asleep on the sidewalk in front of the center, located in an old rundown building. The students snickered and made cruel jokes about the man, the building, and the neighborhood. When they went inside the center, there was a note at the front desk: Back in 10 minutes. Have a seat. The students took seats in the waiting area. A few minutes later, the homeless man wandered into the center. The students smirked as he fixed himself a cup of coffee. But their whispers turned to stunned si-lence when the homeless man removed his shabby overcoat. Despite the worn sneakers he wore, the stu-dents recognized immediately that this was not a vagrant. "Welcome. I'm Tom Gallagher, the director of the center." The students realized that Mr. Gallagher had heard every one of their vicious jokes. They just sank into their chairs, never more embarrassed in their lives. "Let this be your first lesson in community service," Mr. Gallagher said quietly. "You can't truly reach out to people if you judge them or make fun of them. A person's appearance has little to do with character. We are all human beings who will need the help of one another at some point in our lives."

[Adapted from Getfed.com.] Holy Week is a marvelous opportunity to stop judging and to open our hearts and let the Lord Jesus touch and change us. It is not always what I do, but what I allow the Lord to do through and in me. We also need each other. Islands are a wonderful place to visit, but we are in this journey of life together. The following words of Pedro Arrupe, S.J. says it best as we begin Holy Week:

“Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekend, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.”

Pedro Arrupe, S.J.

May we take the time to put life in perspective this Holy Week. Fall in love with God. Make the time to journey to the Cross with Christ and together may we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus - from death to eternal life. Jesus promises each one of us love, forgiveness and eternal life. If you get a better offer - take it!

Walking Holy Week with you, Fr. Greg

COMMUNAL CELEBRATION OF RECONCILIATION

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is not about sin. It is about forgiveness, about growth, about healing. It is about that change to which we are called as Christians. Like all the liturgies and sacraments of the Catholic faith, the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion is about GOOD NEWS. It is an expression of hope. It is a Christian celebration. Sin cannot be celebrated, only recon-ciliation can. We are all sinners in need of forgiveness.

Let us join together and celebrate God’s love, mercy and forgiveness—we are sinners in need of repentance. Lent is a won-derful opportunity to probe deeply within our heart—to grow, change, repent and celebrate God’s unconditional love and for-giveness. Plan to join us on:

Monday, March 29th — 7:30 p.m.

Please note: No 6:30 or 8:00 am

Masses on Thursday, Friday or Saturday of

Holy Week.

Liturgical Bits & Bytes Prayer over the Gifts

The bread and wine are placed on the altar after they have been brought up. The presider places them and says a prayer over them. This is patterned on the Jewish prayer of thanksgiving. This prayer is actually supposed to be done “inaudibly,” and the song, if there is one, continues. However, if there is no music at this time, the presider may say these prayers out loud. Then we re-spond, “Blessed be God forever.” Both the bread and the wine are food items that require not only the harvest from the earth, but also human effort to pro-duce. They both also require a blend of many grains of wheat or grapes which are crushed to make the final product. These are fitting elements to become the Body of Christ, broken for us, and the Blood of Christ, poured out for us. Copyright © 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.

CATHOLICS COME HOME CHICAGO INVITES YOU TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK.

DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, & ANNULMENTS? Many Catholics who have divorced and re-married outside the Church have often drifted away from the Catholic Church and the practice of their faith. The Catholics Come Home evangelization initiative invites these individuals to take an-other look at Church law concerning marriage and to explore possibilities to resolve issues of divorce and re-marriage, especially through the annulment process. In the coming weeks, special presentations around the Archdiocese will ad-dress these issues. Sessions will be available in English, Spanish, and Polish. The sessions will last about ninety minutes and cover the following topics:

◊ What is Marriage in the Catholic Church? ◊ What is the annulment process? ◊ What are the basic principles of law that must be followed? ◊ How does one apply for a declaration of nullity? ◊ What are the civil effects and misunderstanding about annulment? ◊ What are some of the grounds used in a case?

Returning Catholics, new Catholics or those wishing to learn more about the annulment process can visit the Metropoli-tan Tribunal’s web pages on the Archdiocese of Chicago’s website www.archchicago.org by clicking on Departments and then Metropolitan Tribunal. More information about the presentations can be found on the Catholics Come Home Chicago website, www.CatholicsComeHomeCHICAGO.org The presentations are free and open to all. Please call the parish that is hosting the event you are interested in attending.

Fr. Greg's “Book Fair”

I have led the “Search for God” class for 18 years now and during that time I have always recommended ex-cellent books to participants. Now, as I prepare to leave St. Mary of the Woods, I find my bookshelves over-crowded and realize that I cannot take all of these treasures with me. Upon the urging of a fellow parishioner, I've decided to offer them to you at a “Book Fair” of sorts. Book-cases filled with books I can't take with me will be set up in the Parish Hall from April 10th through the 25th . You are welcome to browse the selection, taking any book you would like. There will be a free will offering box available, specially earmarked to assist the poor and needy, for you to make any donation of your choice. Hopefully, in my leaving, we can enrich each other and together give something to those far less fortunate than ourselves. God Bless, Fr. Greg

Soup and Bread

During Lent, we are asked to make a commitment to seek a deeper spirit of penitential con-version. The real purpose of fast and abstinence is to help us "develop the inner freedom to resist." Having a Lenten (meatless) Soup Supper has been a way to bring such abstinence to our awareness. At our Soup and Bread Supper, the Family Association provides a meal of hearty soup that does not contain meat or meat stock and bread and homemade pretzels, which we share as Parish Family. There is no charge but we ask that you to bring a donation of a canned good per person, which will provide a great help to a local soup kitchen. Such sharing reminds us that personal penance should reach out to the rest of the world through acts of charity. Please join us on GOOD FRIDAY, April 2, 2010, in the Parish Hall. We will begin serving immediately after the 3:00 P.M. Service and continue until 7:15 P.M., prior to the 7:30 P.M. Evening Service. If you are able to volunteer some time, we are looking for help in making pretzels (recipe will be avail-able), setting up, serving and clean up. Please call: Jack & Rosemary Goggin (847) 297-3373 or Peggy Gernady (773) 763-9448 or Brian & Kathleen Laffey or Marcy Mahoney (773) 763-0206.

The Passion This week we walk with Jesus through his passion, death, and resurrection. We begin to experience the sacrifice he made for us and how we are also called to give our life for others. Catholic Relief Services’ Opera-tion Rice Bowl has helped us walk with our sisters and brothers who daily take up the cross of poverty. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we unite ourselves in the one human family that is God’s creation.

OPEN QUESTION FORUM WITH FR. KURT AND MR. JIM DOELL

Would you like to learn some “tips” about how to deal with difficult people in your life? Would you like to under-stand your boss or co-worker better? Would you like to learn how to begin to work at healing a broken relationship or how to deepen a healthy one? Would you like to learn how to listen and communicate more effectively with significant others in your life—your husband, wife, significant other, children or siblings? Have you ever just wanted to ask a counselor a question regarding a key theme or issue you are dealing with in your life? On Thursday evening, April 8th, from 7:30—9:00pm in our school library, Fr. Kurt and Mr. Jim Doell, will be host-ing an open forum on these topics and others you would like them to address. Fr. Kurt brings his nearly 25 years as a priest, counselor, and spiritual director to the table. Mr. Jim Doell, a friend and colleague of Fr. Kurt, brings his 30 plus years as a family therapist and man of faith to this special night. You can bring your questions the night of April 8th. You can also drop off any questions to the rectory in care of Fr. Kurt. If you prefer to ask a question anonymously, you can do so by placing the question unsigned in a sealed enve-lope and drop it off at the rectory again to the attention of Fr. Kurt. All are welcome to this open forum evening. Fr. Kurt and Mr. Jim Doell look forward to being in conversation with you all. Peace, Fr. Kurt and Mr. Jim Doell

The bishops of the United States remain committed to health care reform that will help everyone to be cared for and assure that no one will be deliberately killed.... ... A health care reform bill without adequate protection of per-sonal conscience would be an earthquake in our legal and po-litical life. The laws of the United States have protected consci-entious objectors in many areas of life. To remove that protec-tion in health care now would bring us closer to despotism. It seems strange that some legislators who most protest against the church's "imposing" her ideas on others are the very ones who are willing to impose their own private morality on every-one else.

Dear Friends of St. Mary of the Woods, Over the past five years I have been humbled to serve among you. I am amazed at the number of you who have assumed the role of caregiver for significant others in your life. In my opinion, you are truly unsung he-roes. But, where do you get support? When you are at a low point, where do you turn for someone to simply listen to you and understand? Before I take on my responsibilities with a new community as Pastor, I would like to explore with you the possibility of starting a support group for caregivers here at St. Mary of the Woods that would continue after I move on. To that end, I have asked Brian Bullock, a trained listener, and himself, one who has experience as a caregiver, to join me in pulling together the vision that I have. Please join us for a gathering at the Parish Cen-ter, (formerly the Convent), on Thursday, April 15th at 7:30pm. We will gather over some soup, bread, and refreshments to share ideas together. If you are interested, would like more information, or just would like to share some ideas, feel free to give me, Fr. Kurt, a call at the Rectory at 773-763-0206. Peace and all God’s blessings, Father Kurt
