MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Often when I am out fundraising and spread-ing the good word of

Corbin, I’ll ask the crowd exactly what age do we expect people to stop pursuing joy in life? Exactly what age is it that people are supposed to cease looking forward to a friendly smile and a great conversation? It’s an absurd question because the answer is obviously never. However, it helps put into context exactly what it is we do here at Corbin. With that in mind, I’d like to welcome 39 new members this past month in their continued pursuit of joy and community. The Corbin community is more deeply treasured now thanks to the unique experiences and per-sonalities they bring. Moreover, it is my sin-cere hope that Corbin deeply enriches their lives. Sometimes it takes people a little time to plug in and we just encourage everyone to jump in where they feel most comfortable. In a shift from our old process, Corbin will now start welcoming all new members at a quarterly new member reception. The first reception will take place on Thursday, May 23rd at 2:30pm in the Henderson Room. Come enjoy some snacks, wine and learn a little more about Corbin. You’ll also have a chance to meet some of our board members and mingle with some of your fellow new members. Who knows, a new best friend just might be in the crowd somewhere. If you have joined in the past 6 months and you have never had a chance to attend a new member orientation, we want to invite you to come on down to the reception. Or, if you’ve been a member for some time and have just never really figured out how to quite plug in, then this would be a great start. Spokane should never forget or take for granted the great value our senior community brings to the city. Yes, sometimes seniors

might need a little help from time to time. However, one must not forget that this is only after decades of helping everyone else. Our members here are some of the people who helped build this city into what it is today. You started businesses, taught a generation of children, stood in public service and built communities. Make no mistake about it my friends, you deserve every bit of joy you seek to pursue. I’m thankful to you all for letting me be a part of that. To wrap up, I just want to remind everyone about our Spring Tea coming up on May 17th and our Golf Tournament on June 21st. These fundraiser events are part of how we support Corbin and your participation goes a long way. If you don’t play golf yourself, we’d love for you to spread the word and bring in your friends and family that do. We’ve got a special prize for the top team with an all age 60 plus roster! Finally, as we have had many new members over the past couple of years, we’ve had many questions about our donor memorial wall outside of the dining room. There are many ways to support Corbin, but perhaps the most touching are those we think of Corbin in memorium. That wall is reserved for those who leave a legacy gift to Corbin or even ask that in lieu of flowers, please donate to Corbin. This is such a special gift as Corbin means so much to so many, that we want to enshrine that history. The hope is that thirty years from now, the next generation of seniors could look at that wall and see the names of those who passed on the great gift of Corbin to the future. There is no minimum amount to donate, but we are simply honored that you have considered us. With that, I’ll leave you all to the rest of the newsletter and a joy-filled future without precedent for us all.

The area known as Vinegar Flats has a diverse history and was once home to local tribes, pioneers from the East coast, as well as new immigrants moving into Spokane. As early as 1874 there were small farms and orchards springing up with apple and peach trees hanging with fruit. When the factory began operations in 1890, vinegar was especially important for the preservation of a variety of foods. In an era before household refrigeration, pickling in vinegar was a common method of preserving fruits and vegetables. The Vinegar Works operated in the three-story building at 11th Avenue and Spruce Street until 1958 producing ci-der, malt, and white wine vinegar. Tucked along the south banks of the Spokane River gorge, between the bustle of the city and the historic charm of Browne’s Addition, is the small nest of Peaceful Valley. Anchored by a neighborhood park, simple homes with welcoming front porches make up most of this hidden locale, although taller townhomes have begun to dot the narrow streets. Peaceful Valley is one of the oldest established neighborhoods in Spokane.

Participants will receive a 16" piece of plain fabric and a sample square. Each person will need to choose a co-ordinating print fabric to complete their own nine patch blocks. After everyone completes the blocks we will exchange blocks. The challenge then is to incorporate the blocks you receive into a project of your own choosing. So come and have a relaxing day sewing with the Sandbox Sewers.

New Season of Wii Bowling is Upon Us!

As one season of Corbin’s Wii bowling league has

come to a close, another is ready to begin. The

new session of Wii bowling is set to begin May

6th and will continue over the next 12 weeks.

Also note that there is an All City Tournament

scheduled for May 10th. At the league close

down session for this last season, the idea was

discussed to have a smaller tournament just for the folks at Corbin. We plan on having lunch to-

gether that day and then running both our Wii systems at the same time, so that we can all get in a

game. I’ve talked with Heide and it looks like we are tentatively planning to hold this tournament on

Monday, June 3rd at 11:30. There will be more information to come out later regarding this event,

so pencil it in and prepare to stand by. Finally, I just want to welcome and encourage any and all

considering Wii bowling to reach out to me in order to get involved. It is so much fun and you’ll en-

joy being a part of this talented and friendly group.

Sincerely, Mary Kay Bryan

VOLUNTEER’S SPOTLIGHT

Wendy Whitaker

This month’s volunteer spotlight features recep-

tionist extraordinaire, Wendy Whitaker. Origi-

nally born in Philadelphia, PA, Wendy made her

way to North Carolina with her family at an ear-

ly age where she picked up her wonderful

southern accent. As life carried on, she eventu-

ally made her way out west to Denver, Colorado where she attended nursing

school to become an RN. Approximately 27 years ago, Wendy moved to Spo-

kane to raise her two children, as she loves this part of the country. She would

then move on to continue to serve and help others as an RN for various

healthcare organizations in Spokane over the next couple of decades. With a

full and fruitful career behind her, Wendy retired full of energy for this new sea-

son of life. That’s when she found Corbin. At the behest of a few of Corbin’s

members, they convinced her that Corbin was the place to be and that she

should also volunteer. Wasting no time, Wendy joined Corbin in August of last

year and immediately set out to volunteer as a receptionist. Anyone who stops

by Corbin on Wednesday afternoons knows there is great conversation and

laughs to be had thanks to Wendy’s welcoming demeanor. Always enjoying a

good adventure, Wendy will be traveling with her friends at Corbin to Scotland

this month. Thank you, Wendy, for all you do for Corbin.

Two birthdays were celebrated on April 5, Laura Schlangen and Linda Frand-sen. Laura Schlangen was the winner of a $20.00 gift certificate towards any activity at Corbin. The lovely cake and gift certificate were provided by Fair-wood Retirement Village & Assisted Living. The lunch was delicious, with a great variety of food. All guests celebrating a birthday, will be entered to win the $20.00 gift certificate. If it is your birthday month, please let the volunteers at the reception desk know before May 2nd. The next Birthday Pot Luck is May 3, 2019. Bring a dish, enjoy the company and celebrate, even if it’s not your birthday. The lunches are a lot of fun and you may even win a prize.

Congrats to Doris White! Not only was Doris White a new member who signed

up at the Health Fair, but she was the winner of this

year’s $250 passport drawing! What a way to wel-

come her into the Corbin community.

Congrats Doris!
