ACTION FROM ANIMATION After the popularity of Alice in Wonderland as a live-action fi lm in 2010, Disney began production of a series of remade fi lms scheduled to roll out over the next few years.

    By Ariana Fernandez Staff Writer

Disney has been shooting live-action movies since the late 1940s, but it was not until the last few years that The Walt Dis-ney Studios began remaking its own classic animated fairy tales into live-action movies. Disneys recent Cinderella production was based on the Italian folk tale, The Little Glass Slipper and Walt Dis-neys original 1950 animated fi lm. It has now joined Malefi -cent, Oz the Great and Power-ful, and Alice in Wonderland as the latest classic Disney fi lms to be revisited. When Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland swung into the-aters in 2010, it brought a new trend of fi lms to the big screen. It showed the world that origi-nal, classically animated stories could be retold in live-action for generations to come. Its all part of a bigger, broader strategy to bring these stories to life in unique and extraordinary ways, said Dave Hollis, Dis-neys distribution chief, in Vari-ety. There are two paths weve been taking lately. Its either, How do you tell a story you

love in brand new ways, as we did with Malefi cent or Oz, or How do we make the quintes-sential live-action version as we did with Cinderella? Disney is not only remaking its own movies, but also buy-ing the rights to movies from other companies as well. For example, Anastasia will once again play in theaters in 2017 as a new live-action Disney prin-

cess movie. The next movie to be remade is The Jungle Book, a 1967 animated fi lm of a young boy that is raised in the jungle by various animals. According to Business Insider, the remade fi lm was supposed to come out this year, but has been pushed back until April 15, 2016. In the following year, the tale as old as time is releasing as a

musical, according to IMDb. Beauty and the Beast will star Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as Prince Adam, the Beast. The development of the live-action version of the princess fi lm Mulan has recently been confi rmed by Disney. Since the announcement, fans have peti-tioned the company to prevent whitewashing of the cast.

When Jon Stewart announced his departure from the Com-edy Centrals late-night satiri-cal news program, The Daily Show, many wondered who would replace the host of 16 years. Less than two months af-ter Stewarts announcement, the network announced that Trevor Noah, a South African comedi-an, would replace Stewart. According to the New York Times, Noah made his debut as an on-air contributor on The Daily Show, when he gave his insight regarding the police force in the United States. Initial reactions towards No-ahs appointment were positive. Noah would bring a fresh per-spective and diversity to the net-work as a biracial host. Howev-er, while Noah is a newcomer to American television, he is by no means an amateur of late-night hosting and comedy. According to CBS News, Noah led his own South African talk show, To-night With Trevor Noah, and is also a stand-up comic that has sold-out shows internationally. Im thrilled for the show and for Trevor, said Stewart in a statement. Hes a tremendous comic and talent that weve loved working with. However, less than a week after the announcement of Stewarts replacement, Noah received social media backlash after people revealed his tweets from several years ago, many of which people are calling anti-Semitic and sexist. Critics also called for an alternative replace-ment for Stewart. Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didnt look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car! read one tweet from September 2009. Comedy Central stood by the comedian despite this backlash, according to Variety. The net-work stated, To judge [Noah] of his comedy based on a hand-ful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central. Stewart also defended Noah over the controversy, claiming that Noah will earn the audi-ences trust and respect. Noah later addressed the back-lash, tweeting, To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didnt land is not a true refl ec-tion of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian. While it is unclear whether any of Noahs jokes will land when he takes over The Daily Show, there is no doubt that this is not the last time people will be hear-ing of the him when he takes over for Stewart next year. Stewarts last show will air on Aug. 6.
