• Issues executive orders during emergencies.

• Reads Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reports on the state of national security.

• Grants reprieves, pardons and amnesty for offenses against the U.S.

Ceremonial leader of the government:•Allows the president to promote, share and represent American values•Encourage national spirit by lighting the national Christmas tree or throwing out the first pitch at a major league baseball game

Represents the U.S. at official public events at home and abroad by: •Greeting foreign leaders•Hosting state dinners at the White House

Responsible for the operation of the U.S. military and the security of the nation.This means all of the military leaders report to and take orders from the president.

• Holds talks with foreign leaders

• Negotiates treaties with Senate consent
