Announcement Regarding New Bishop of San Diego

I am happy to announce that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Robert W. McElroy to be the sixth

Bishop of San Diego. Bishop McElroy was born in San Francisco in 1954. A fifth generation San

Franciscan, Bishop McElroy lived until he was ten years old in Daly City. His family then moved to

Burlingame. Feeling called to the priesthood, he entered Saint Joseph High School in Mountain View,

the high school seminary of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Bishop McElroy decided to pursue

college studies outside the seminary system. He graduated from Harvard University in 1975 and then

received a master’s degree in American history from Stanford University in 1976.

Bishop McElroy reentered the seminary in the fall of 1976 at Saint Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park, California. He was

ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco on April 12, 1980. After a few years in a parish and diocesan

assignment, he undertook graduate studies in the field of Catholic Social Teaching, obtaining a licentiate in theology from

the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, a doctorate in moral theology from the Gregorian University in Rome and a

doctorate in political science from Stanford. He returned to parish ministry in 1989. Bishop McElroy was appointed vicar

general of the Archdiocese in 1995 and a pastor of a parish in 1996, where he served for more than fifteen years.

Bishop McElroy was ordained an auxiliary bishop of San Francisco on September 7, 2010 and served as the Archdiocesan

Vicar for Parish Life and Development until his appointment to San Diego.

Bishop McElroy will be formally installed as the sixth Bishop of San Diego at a Mass to be celebrated at 1pm at St.

Thérèse of Carmel Parish on Wednesday, April 15. I join Bishop Brom, Bishop Chavez, priests, deacons, religious and lay

faithful in welcoming Bishop Robert McElroy to episcopal ministry in the Diocese of San Diego.

Very Reverend Monsignor Steven F. Callahan

Diocesan Administrator

Annual Lenten Collection

Next weekend Each year all parishes of the Diocese of San Diego are asked to participate in the Annual Lenten Collection. This collection raises funds for Catholic Relief Services, the Church in Africa and the Church in Latin America. This weekend we have placed special envelopes for this collection in the pews. On the envelope you may designate your contribution to one or more of the three causes included in this collection. Special collections provide an opportunity for us as individuals and as a parish faith community to reach out in solidarity and assist those in need elsewhere in the world. Monies raised by this collection go to help the Church in areas beyond our national borders. We encourage you to join others in our parish and throughout the diocese in responding generously to this collection.

Pick up the special pink envelope for this collection in the pews today and

return it next week.

The sacred place where God’s glory dwells

The Temple was built as a house

where God’s glory would dwell in the

midst of his people. The buyers and

sellers of offerings had compromised

the sacredness of the Temple. Jesus’

zeal to restore its sacredness leads him

to clear the Temple.

But this parable-in-action had a

deeper meaning, as his disciples understood later. When the

Jews asked for a sign for why he had acted this way, Jesus

responded: “Destroy this temple and in three days I will

raise it up.” The Jews thought he was talking foolishly.

Later on, the disciples understood that Jesus was talking

about the temple of his own body. Jesus is the sacred place

where God’s glory dwells in the midst of his people.

After the disciples experienced the tragic death of Jesus on

the Cross and became witnesses to his resurrected body

three days later, and the Holy Spirit had come upon them

and filled their minds and hearts with light, they were able

to look back at all they had experienced with Jesus in a new

light. They began to understand that they were now part of

the Body of Christ – the continuation of the sacred place

where God’s glory remained in the midst of his people. As

they preached Jesus Christ crucified and raised, they experi-

enced the power and wisdom of God at work in Jesus’

name. Some people who heard them found a crucified Sav-

ior to be a stumbling block; others thought it utter foolish-

ness. Still many others accepted it as saving grace.

You and I are among those who have accepted saving grace.

We have been incorporated into the Body of Christ by our

baptism. As Church community, we are to be the sacred

dwelling place of God in our world. And each of us has

been taught to reverence our body as a temple of the Holy

Spirit.

Hearing the account of Jesus cleansing the Temple is a good

Lenten reminder to us individually and as a community. Am

I keeping the temple of my body sacred? What kind of effort

do I make to keep the community sacred? Is Jesus inviting

me to a cleansing in some way?

Lord Jesus, you are the power and wisdom of God. Open

each of us to the cleansing you want to do in your temple

during this Lent. —oblates.org

St. Didacus School was featured on the front page

of the Union Tribune on February 19th. UT pho-

tographer, Eduardo Contreras, took photos at the

Ash Wednesday Mass with the school. One photo

was featured in the paper and several others were

available to view on the UT’s website. Here is a

look at some of the photos he took that day...

Second Scrutiny of the Elect at 10am Mass This Sunday, we continue to pray in a particular way for those who are to be baptized at the Easter Vigil. We pray that any attachment to evil might be removed, and that they be truly converted to Christ.
