SENSORS
HEXAGON METROLOGY SENSORS FOR HEXAGON METROLOGY CMMS THE MOST FLEXIBLE SENSOR SOLUTIONS ON THE MARKET
8
Hexagon Metrology’s comprehensive range of probes, probe heads, probe and styli changers and accessories for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) represents the latest evolution in probing technology. All key components are engineered, ma-nufactured and assembled by Hexagon Metrology and are designed to work together as an integrated product line for maximum application flexibility and enhanced CMM performance.
PROBE HEADSBest solution for every applicationThe probe head forms the heart and soul of every coordinate
measuring machine. Combined with a sensor, it generates the
measurement data during inspection cycles.
Manual heads for touch trigger probes provide excellent basic
capabilities. The automatic probe heads extend that capability
with a kinematic joint for the coupling of scanning probes and
laser scanners. Our continuous wrists offer servo wrist flexibili-
ty, where styli can be aligned in any direction.
TOUCH TRIGGER PROBESThe Basic SolutionHexagon Metrology manufactures touch trigger probes for fast
and repeatable 3D measurements. They feature long life, accu-
racy, ease of use, comparatively low cost and excellent access
to difficult to reach measuring points. The touch trigger probes
are available in four versions with measuring forces ranging
between 0.055 N and 0.10 N. Their M8 threaded connections
permit direct assembly with nearly all existing manual and
motorized measuring heads. They are available either with or
without stylus module changing ability.
SCANNING PROBESHigh-Speed Scanning Scanning at its best – this is what users can expect with the
Hexagon Metrology scanning probes. With both the smallest of
these probes, the HP-S-X1, and the larger versions, the HP-S-X3
and HP-S-X5, it is possible to make all standard measurements.
These measurements include discrete scanning, self-centering
measuring and continuous high-speed scanning for fast, and
accurate contour measurements.
LASER SCANNING SENSORSFast – Faster – 3D point scanningThe HP-L 106 laser scanning probe provides many benefits
for metrology in a complete and powerful turnkey package.
Rapid point-cloud capture, facilitates feature inspection to
CAD for thin walled or sheet metal parts and free form surface
inspection to CAD and reverse engineering. It offers three levels
of zoom (25, 60 and 120mm) to allow for greater versatility
in data collection. The probe is available on the majority of
Hexagon Metrology CMMs, allowing fully automated system
operations.
All newly produced products are now branded with Hexagon Metrology and have a new corporate naming convention.

Manufacturing Engineering: Describe
Hexagon’s new PC-DMIS Touch interface
for CMMs.
PC-DMIS Touch is a new, groundbreaking
way to interact with inspection data and
measurement devices. Based on ad-
vanced Multi Touch technology, PC-DMIS
Touch combines the power of PC-DMIS
with a full screen interface to create in-
tuitive inspection routines for metrology
novices and experts alike. The simplified
organization of the user interface guides
the user through a full set of inspection
tools, such as construction of features
or feature sets, 2D and 3D dimensional
reporting, GD&T configuration and much
more.
PC-DMIS Touch is based on four intu-
itive icon-based menus: dimension,
construction, alignment, and measure.
This extremely easy-to-use measure-
ment software is utilized for basic
feature-based applications with a CMM
touch probe [no scanner]. Each menu is
represented in a different colour, and the
user selects the desired operation from
a list of possibilities to the left of the
3D view. The ‘Grab and Measure’ feature
means the software will take you to the
blue measurement menu automati-
cally, as soon as you start measuring. No
menu navigation is necessary to operate
PC-DMIS Touch. This version of PC-DMIS
is not CAD-compatible.
ME: How does using the touch interface
differ from a traditional interface?
To start, the software is compatible
with touch-screen PCs and tablets. The
ope rator interacts with the PC-DMIS
software by using only one finger to
‘swipe’ through the menus. With the
emergence of the technologically literate
workforce, especially in the 24–30 age
group, new touch interfaces are be-
coming more prevalent in the software
market. With this emerging trend in
mind, Hexagon Metrology has introduced
PC-DMIS Touch for the next generation
of metrologists. The touch interface was
designed to simplify user interaction,
enhance the user experience for portable
and CMM measurement tasks, and
provide an easy execution interface for
existing PC-DMIS programs. The interface

and software-guided procedures require
very little prior training for new users.
New features are being added weekly,
and we are integrating more multi-touch
gestures to simplify the use of software.
After our preliminary research, we esti-
mate about 70% of measurement tasks
performed by users [without CAD] can be
accomplished with PC-DMIS Touch.
ME: What can you do with a touch
interface that wasn’t possible with older
systems?
Compared to older interfaces, the
PC-DMIS Touch interface is ultra-intu-
itive, and requires very little training.
New users can learn the navigation and
software in just one day. There is no
training necessary for existing PC-DMIS
users. Another significant benefit of the
Touch interface is its tablet compatibi-
lity, which adds a new level of portability
for measurement on the shop floor or
in a laboratory environment. PC-DMIS
Touch is now compatible with all Hexagon
Metrology-supported portable articula-
ted arms, and starting in October, most
Hexagon Metrology DCC [Direct Computer
Control] CMMs will have the Touch inter-
face as well.
There are other usability differences with
PC-DMIS Touch, including the ‘Grab and
Measure’ feature that goes straight to the
measurement menu as soon as the user
moves the measurement arm. There is no
need to navigate to the menu. Measure-
ments can also be taken rapidly using
the ‘Auto-Guess’ principle of PC-DMIS.
The software also offers full webcam
functionality, which allows the user
to take a snapshot of the part being
measured, and associate the photo to
a file with a part number and file name.
It supports full macro compatibility,
which allows users to run even complex
PC-DMIS part programs in a simple
environment.
Another powerful feature of PC-DMIS
Touch is the report generator. As mea-
surements are acquired, and geometric
constructions are made, a measurement
report is created automatically. Anytime
the user wants to view the report, they
just ‘swipe’ to the left of the menu. The
look and feel of the measurement reports
is completely new for the Touch version
of PC-DMIS. Object tolerances in the
report can be edited by simply selecting a
feature. The reports are printed from the
software as PDF files.
ME: How has the interface been
accepted by early users?
PC-DMIS Touch has had a great reception
from the metrology marketplace. The
majority of novice users has been very
pleased with our attention to ease-
of-use, and is especially supportive of
our goal to bring measurement to the
masses. Overall, the industry has taken
notice of Hexagon Metrology’s emphasis
to provide a dynamic product for our
customers by vastly improving the user
experience. Even our experienced users
see a potential in using the execution
mode. This is PC-DMIS Touch’s ability to
execute any existing PC-DMIS program to
deploy it in the production environment
for a quick launch and results capability.
Several large customers have inquired
about how to fit PC-DMIS Touch into
their current measurement tasks and
procedures.

WHERE SHOP FLOOR ENVIRONMENT AND ACCURATE MEASUREMENT RESULTS MEET
It is a common misconception that accurate measurement results on the factory shop floor are impossible to achieve because of harsh environmental conditions in production, such as vibration
and dirt or vast temperature range. However, by using the correct specialized, shop-floor hardened coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), measurement accuracy is ensured, even in the production environment. Furthermore, automated inspection is possible right at the point of production, making it ideal for lean manufacturing and cellular layouts.Let’s dig into what Hexagon Metrology is creating in this field. Our new generations of Hexagon Metrology machines and software were developed with inspiration from more than 15 years of shop floor machine production experience, as well as the thousands of units in the field worldwide. A few examples of this are:
13
TESA-SCAN & MICRO HITE 3D DUAL: Flexibility and Ease of UseIn order to meet the measuring needs of a wider audience,
Hexagon Metrology developed this shop floor solution to
minimize productivity costs and gain flexibility and efficiency.
TESA-SCAN offers a non-contact measurement solution that
matches the needs for inspection of all common round part
geometry. It also has the capability of measuring standard and
non-standard threads, thanks to the exclusive TESA Slewing
System. As industrial automation becomes increasingly
impor tant, TESA extended its SCAN solution to offer a spe-
cific automation application with a KUKA robot arm and a
TESA-SCAN 25 turned parts measuring system. Industrial
processing and inspection becomes easier thanks to the latest
technology with increased throughput and reduced scrap.
TESA also developed the universal measuring machine MICRO
HITE 3D DUAL, an exclusive 2 machines in 1 solution. Used
in either manual or automatic mode, the machine provides
welcome flexibility by offering an adjustable and complete
measurement solution for product batches, from prototyping
to large production runs. Additionally, a special palletisation
feature carries out a program created on a single part on a
whole pallet, enabling an efficient and inherently flexible
competitive advantage.
The TESA SCAN with KUKA robot arm as well as the MICRO
HITE 3D DUAL run on the TESA REFLEX software, an intuitive
and easy-to-use program that facilitates the evaluation of
your measuring data. Based on this user-friendliness, TESA
guarantees that today’s solutions satisfy tomorrow’s needs.
7.10.7 SF: Integration, Automation and a Great User ExperienceDesigned to excel in harsh industrial environments, the all-new
7.10.7 SF CMM introduces significant advancements aimed at
making the CMM more convenient and productive for manufa-
cturing operations.
The 7.10.7 SF’s compact design takes up less space on the shop
floor with a measuring stroke of 710mm x 1010mm x 680mm.
Using a unique kinematic locating system, the fixture plates can
be quickly loaded and unloaded, allowing users to swap indivi-
dual parts or part types in a matter of seconds.
Other improvements include integrated workspace and
message lighting. The workspace lighting fully illuminates the
measurement volume since the 7.10.7 SF may be placed in
poorly lit environments. Message lighting on the CMM’s Z-axis
cover displays the status of inspection operations on the shop
floor, and eliminates the need to “baby sit” the CMM. Status
lights visually indicate when the inspection process is complete,
whether a part passed or failed, or if an unexpected problem
occurred during the operation.
The 7.10.7 SF continues the trend of pushing dimensional in-
spection from the quality lab to the shop floor so inspection be-
comes simply another operation in the manufacturing process.

TIGO SF: Easy and Intuitive Thanks to Touch TechnologyWith a measuring volume of 500 x 580 x 500mm (X/Y/Z), TIGO SF
is a new accurate and compact 3D CMM specifically designed
for use on the shop floor. TIGO SF is the ideal measurement
solution for a wide range of accurate, small and medium size
parts from all industrial sectors. Today, it is the best performing
machine in its product category.
Since compressed air is not required, it can be placed
seamlessly in production cells or in any area of the workshop.
Its robustness and reliability ensures minimum servicing while
operating time is maximised.
TIGO SF offers a new way to interact with a shop floor mea-
surement device. The core of the operating concept is the
PC-DMIS TOUCH software, designed for touchscreens and
latest ge neration operating systems. The user interface shows
easy-to- understand graphical elements and commands,
providing the base for an intuitive measurement process.
PC-DMIS TOUCH guides users from one step to the next so even
personnel not familiar with automatic measurement systems
will learn to use TIGO SF after only one day of training.

On one side there are proven
technologies and methods
of metrology systems which
can be used in the measuring
room and near the line for measurement,
ana lysis and problem solving of sample
parts. On the other side, once a qua-
lity concern is raised, there are in-line
process control systems working fast
to support the line cycle times but with
only limited accuracy and dimensional
information.
In reality and throughout the last decade
most OEMs and suppliers decided on a
combined dimensional control strategy
involving both traditional measurement
systems such as Hexagon Metrology’s
bridge and horizontal arm CMMs and
other supporting in-line process control
systems. In some cases this led to an
overlap with efficiency challenges and
repetitive processes.
At the same time, additional metro-
logy systems and technologies such
as non-contact optical scanners were
deve loped to nourish traditional probing
CMMs. These new non-contact scanners,
at first only used for manual configu-
rations, matured into semi- automated
measuring cells which were proven highly
useful in various automotive industry ap-
plications such as prototypes, sheet metal
stampings and closure measurements.
For a long period, in-line and fully auto-
mated applications presented a signifi-
cant challenge to the classic metrology
provider.
Bridging Metrology & Process Control
Measuring 100% of the production parts
and assemblies, measuring within the
cycle time, 24/7 operation in a demand-
ing production environment, and fully
integrating the line automation and
control architecture are only a few of the
challenges. Given its broad technology
base and application know how,
Hexagon Metrology took on this challenge
to transform the category by integrating
metrology into the automation process
and create a fast, rich and actionable
metrology-based process control.
Having bridged the once separate
metrology and process control do-
mains, Hexagon Metrology recently
launched a new category of Smart Inline
Measurement Solutions called 360°
SIMS. These solutions are designed to
integrate advanced full 3D metrology
capabilities with those specific methods
and characteristics of process control
and in-line gauging systems. Hexagon
Metrology is now able to offer its custo-
mers broad solutions for a fully auto-
mated dimensional and quality process
within the production line. In the future
the “Body in White” does not have to be
brought to the measurement device. We
will bring the measurement directly to or
near the line.
360° SIMS installations are designed to
be adapted to their respective envi-
ronment and target industry applica-
tions. Installations typically include
robot-mounted white light area mea-
surement sensors and powerful point
cloud-based software along with various
automation devices for maximum flexi-
bility and reach. With the current release,
cell configurations include in-line,
near-the-line and offline options to
support a variety of customer applica-
tions throughout stamping, body shop
and final assembly sub-plants.
Inline Metrology for higher efficiency
Throughout product development several
new innovations were generated as
part of the solution offering. Amongst
them are patent-pending alignment and
measuring devices for large objects,
innovative software tools for large data
set visualization and analysis, as well as
fixed optical sensors for complementing
measurement tasks.
These solutions are designed for easy
and, in most cases, fully automated
ope ration, allowing operators with
only basic training to supervise the

shows that customers are noticing signi-
ficant improvements in efficiency, faster
problem resolution and higher usability
of the measurement data. Apart from
these and other capital and operational
savings, customers also expect these
new solutions to offer a greater flexibility
in measuring multiple models and easy
product updates with even shorter times
between new models.
Overall, the integration of Hexagon
Metrology’s most powerful offerings is
another step toward the digital factory of
tomorrow.
360° SMART INLINE MEASUREMENT SOLUTIONS In line and On Time“The new 360° SIMS is added to our leading sheet metal, horizontal and
gantry CMMs offering, which has been a cornerstone of automotive me-
trology for the past 30 years. With this new offering, we’ll continue to serve
our global customers directly on their shop floor.” Giacomo Barilà, head of
Hexagon Metrology’s automated solutions.
The Power of Full 3D In-line Measurement The 360° SIMS measurement technology combined with its server-based
software suite results in a variety of powerful analysis tools including rich

The Concept of “Wireless” at a TESA Manufacturing Operation In terms of hand measuring instrument solutions, TESA
presents the state-of-the-art TLC-TWIN system. The latest
innovation from TESA sends data from an instrument to a re-
mote computer with the press of a button and without a cable.
Thanks to its unique bi-directional wireless communication
protocol, the computer is able to identify data is received and
sends a classification of the measured value to the instrument’s
LCD. The TWIN station receiver manages wireless data com-
munication from up to 48 instruments. To use, the battery cap
of the TWIN-CAL IP67 is simply replaced with a TLC-TWIN. The
miniaturized 2.4 GHz module housed in the TLC-TWIN avoids
using a cumbersome wireless emitting accessory hanging
from the instrument. Moreover, the IP67 ingress protection of
the TWIN-CAL IP67 caliper remains preserved even when the
instrument is equipped with TLC-TWIN.
TESA participates in the global trend of a digital factory, a
gigantic task that reaches every location in a factory by linking
each device to the manufacturing site. Connectivity solutions
play a key role in collecting manufacturing and inspection
data in real-time. Developed, tested and applied in-house, the
TLC-TWIN became a key factor in the effort to digitalise manu-
facturing site at TESA.

DEALERS
Hexagon Metrology has a network of over 100 distribu-
tion partners on five continents appointed to cover
specific geographic areas or sectors. Such a deve-
loped network of distributors helps us to be close to you and
respond to your needs in a quickest possible time. Hexagon
Metrology distributors are specialized in specific fields and
complement perfectly our offer. To be sure that our partners
are continuous experts in their fields, we organize regular
training, information days, seminars and various meetings
around the world where they can exchange ideas, network and
learn together. Our dealers are our long-term partners whom
we can trust and who trust us.
One such partner is Retecon based in South Africa. Retecon is a
machine tool, accessories and measuring equipment supplier,
mainly for the metal working industry. The company was
established in 1971 and its name stands for REliable TEchnical
CONsultants. George Sansoni, Measurement Systems Specialist
Sales & Service, gives us a close-up of this cooperation:
MEASUREUP: How long have you been working with
Hexagon Metrology?
It is over 25 years that I have represented Retecon (PTY) Ltd.
responsible for Southern Africa.
MU: What are the main benefits of your cooperation with
Hexagon Metrology?
The main benefit is access to the world’s leading metrology
supplier giving us an edge over our competition by having the
widest selection of solutions for our customers.
MU: In which products / solutions are you specialized?
I am specialized in portable products with special focus on opti-
cal solutions. But I also play a role in stationary solutions when
needed and in special automation applications.
MU: Can you please describe your most interesting
success story?
I would say selling six ROMER Absolute Arms with integrated
scanner to Weir Minerals (one in 2010 during the launch of
the product in South Africa, then five systems in 2013). Then
for sure providing a laser tracker and portable arm solution
to Toyota SA. They purchased a Leica Absolute Tracker AT901
with Leica T-Probe, Leica T-Scan plus a Leica Absolute Tracker
AT402 with Leica B-Probe and also a ROMER Absolute Arm with
external laser scanner.
MU: What kind of support do you have from
Hexagon Metrology?
Basically, anything I need. It can be either sales or promotion
oriented. Support is always excellent. This includes shipping of
demo equipment when needed or promotion of new products.
We receive various marketing materials like posters, roll-ups,
etc. We can also count on support for the organization of events
such as open houses.
MU: You will soon open a calibration centre for portable mea-
suring arms. Can you please let us know more about that?
Yes, this will without a doubt give us an edge over our main
competitors, as we are so far away from the major services
centres, we need the ability to be able to service and repair the
arms in South Africa. Down time is a cost and we need to turn
the arms around in the shortest possible time.
MU: Are there any events / meetings organized by
Hexagon Metrology regularly which help you in your work?
Each year a Dealers’ meeting is organized. It helps to network
and exchange ideas with other dealers who are mainly long-
term partners. It’s also worth mentioning the workshops about
tracker products which are organized regularly in Switzerland.
MU: In 2013 you attended HxGN LIVE, the Hexagon Conference
in Las Vegas. Please tell us your impressions from that event.
This was a great experience to be able to see the full scope and
range of the Hexagon portfolio and the extent of its worldwide
presence and reach. I was able to network not just with dealers
or distributors but also with users of Hexagon products. And the
fact that this is held in Vegas, that says it all.
