Dear West Hollywood Chamber Members,

Five years ago I moved to West Hollywood from

San Diego and I remember one of the first calls

I made was to the West Hollywood Chamber of

Commerce. I wanted to really know this dynamic

city and network with energetic and creative

individuals. The Chamber soon enough became my extended family.

West Hollywood became my urban village, and through the Chamber

I connected with business owners, managers, employees, neighbors and

made new friendships.

The last five years have shown me that the biggest economic driver in

our City is the hotel and hospitality industry. Our hotels are the lifeblood

of our economy and Visit West Hollywood is the driving force behind

marketing our destination to “put heads in beds”. Within these pages

you will read about all our amazing Chamber Member hotels and how

important the tourism market is for our businesses and community.

Congratulations to Sunset Strip Music Festival, for once again putting

on an incredible party!

We hope to see you all on November 5th at our dynamic Creative City

Awards: Honoring Innovation in Business in its 31st year hosted at

The London West Hollywood! It’s up to you, the Members, so remember

to Vote online!

In closing, I’ve served on the Chamber Board for the last five years,

one year as the Treasurer, and the last three as the Chairman. I am truly

grateful to this Chamber and all of its Members for enriching my

life experience.

Thank you,

The Chamber is gearing up for a fantastic fourth quarter

with wonderful events, programs and promotions for

Remember the old Wyndam Bel Age hotel? Well, unbeknownst to some, the hotel when it was acquired over six years ago to become The London, boarded up a few areas that are hidden gems of unused space. To capitalize on this unused real estate and add even more “British flair”, The London underwent a make-over with a new ninth floor with twenty-one suites, by the original designer of the property, David Collins Studio. And a new 2,000 square foot state-of-the-art fitness center (designed by Gonzalez Architects with interiors by Richmond Design), located adjacent to the first floor lobby.

David Collins Studio’s outstanding design will feature sixteen Royal Vista suites as well as five specialty Gate Suites that pay homage to London’s Hyde Park’s gate system — principal entry points named as a celebration of a rich British cultural history. Gates have always been an important element at The London West Hollywood’s overall design since conception, with elaborate wrought iron entry gates being commissioned to adorn the front entrance, setting the exclusive tone of old Hollywood glamour. The sixteen 750 sq. ft. Royal Vista Suites on the ninth floor will feature private dressing areas, oversized work desks and spacious

Since its opening in 2008, The London West Hollywood has boasted an atmosphere of British style flawlessly melded with a Southern California twist. Modern luxury is woven subtly into every aspect of the hotel, from the entrance and lobby to the garden-inspired rooftop pool deck and private terraces. Acclaimed Chef Gordon Ramsay made his West Coast debut at The London West Hollywood, with his signature ‘Gordon Ramsay at The London West Hollywood’ restaurant and exclusive in-suite and poolside dining.

Each of these 1 and 2-bedroom Gate Suites, spanning between 1,425 and 1,975 square feet, will boast a highly residen-tial ambiance, replete with hardwood flooring; kitchens or kitchenettes; 53” flat screen televisions; and three terraces with sweeping views of Los Angeles. Beyond reveling in the exquisite design, guests of the Gates Suites will also be treated to enhanced services, including one-way airport transportation as well as VIP in-suite check-in. The new 2,000 square foot fitness center is a cutting edge facility whose design embodies the qualities of a traditional private members club. The central seating area is dedicated to both relaxation and socializing, while the state-of-the-art equipment inspires guests to practice their fitness workouts. In 2013, West Hollywood hosted close to 3 million visitors from around the world. Helping to ensure that every single visitor has a great experience, Visit West Hollywood has launched I Am West Hollywood, an interactive program that encourages and empowers West Hollywood businesses and their employees to become better informed about the city and all it has to offer. This 2.5 hour program consists of a guided driving tour around West Hollywood’s neighborhoods and attractions, followed by a classroom session facilitated by a trained I Am West Hollywood leader. The classroom session covers West Hollywood’s brand, local insights, tips on providing excellent guest service, LGBT diversity training, and much more. Participants will discover their role in the tourism industry and why delivering an optimal customer experience is vital to the city’s economic success. “Whether it’s a taxi driver, a bellman at a hotel or a restaurant server, guests always ask these front line workers for the inside scoop about the destination,” said Bill Hynes, Executive Vice President of Visit West Hollywood. “The I Am West Hollywood program will provide hospitality staff with the tools to deliver an exceptional experience.”

I Am West Hollywood Turns Employees Into Tourism Ambassadors

Trained individuals become “Official West Hollywood Ambassadors” and are armed with a database of facts, figures, and “Did You Know” anecdotes about West Hollywood for use in customer interaction. During the program’s pilot launch, many of Visit West Hollywood’s staff and board members went through the training, including Mylena Christina, owner of LIFT West Hollywood, who said: "Getting people engaged with this program is a tremendous way to boost civic pride, build WeHo evangelists and burnish the vibrant WeHo brand. As a long-time local resident and small business owner, I learned a lot of new factoids that made me love our great little city that much more. Even if we've only been incorporated since 1984, our city has a lot of history and continues to evolve into a real world-class destination." Business owners and managers in West Hollywood and neighboring areas are invited to enroll their employees in the program. Workshops will be offered monthly. Go to www.iamwesthollywood.com for more information and to enroll.

WEST HOLLYWOOD GEARS UP FOR THE NEWLY EXPANDED TWO-DAY SUNSET STRIP MUSIC FESTIVALBy: Brent X Mendoza

It’s a wonderful event to have in our city.” says Jeff Kulek, general manager of The London hotel. Troy Berry, the sales and marketing manager for The Grafton agrees, “Bands and festival patrons alike associate our hotel as a sort of SSMF hub and hang out… I think expanding to two-days will increase the festival’s profile and benefit not only our business but the surrounding economy. It’s good for everyone.” In partnership with the Sunset Strip Music Festival, a number of WeHo hotels including: the Andaz, the Grafton, The Chamberlain, The Standard, The London, Mondrian, Le Montrose, Le Parc and the Ramada Plaza are capitalizing on the internationally promoted festival and offering potential guests special “SSMF Packages” featuring deeply discounted rates (for one, two and even three night stays), tickets to the festival, plus various other perks including VIP access to some of the invitation only special events – the SSMF Honoree Tribute at House of Blues Sunset and the official SSMF launch party, “Get Stripped” on the rooftop of the Andaz. Keeping pace with the hotels, many of The Sunset Strip’s most recognizable businesses have special events and creative tie-in promotions planned for “SSMF Week.” The landmark Saddle Ranch Chop House will be hosting a “Babes on the Bull” SSMF kickoff party featuring a mechanical bull riding contest hosted by celebrity judges. Pink Taco will be presenting a special SSMF edition of their weekly “Much More Mondays” event, featuring a curated DJ set by Margot Lox that will pay tribute to all the past and present SSMF artists. Other notable SSMF related happenings include rock n’ roll movie screenings at The Den of Hollywood, a “Rockomedy” show at The Comedy Store, and plenty of additional live music performances hosted by businesses up and down The Strip.

Founded in 2008 by the Sunset Strip Business Association (SSBA) in partnership with The City of West Hollywood, the Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF) was initially conceived as a means of “promoting, celebrating, and perpetuating the legendary Sunset Strip music experience.” Now heading into its seventh year, the festival – whose past headliners have included Ozzy Osbourne, Smashing Pumpkins, Mötley Crüe, Marilyn Manson and Linkin Park – has grown in both size and scope: from its humble year one beginnings inside the legendary venues, to moving outdoors to a single daylong “street fest” in 2009, to finally this year making the leap to a legitimate festival style two-day weekend event.

“This has been the goal from year one.” stated SSBA executive director Todd Steadman. “We needed to allow the proper amount of time, study and consideration to safely grow and manage the festival, especially one involving such a major street closure, but I think this two-day format was always been the end goal; especially in staying relevant and competitive with the other major festival players: Coachella, FYF, Outside Lands… two day festivals are now industry standard.” With this year’s expansion expected to bring in upwards of 20,000 ticketed patrons (almost twice as many festival-goers as previous years), the businesses of The Sunset Strip and West Hollywood will receive a big economic boost from “out-of-towners” and even international visitors looking to eat, shop, play and bed down between SSMF days. Hoping to be impacted by this mass influx of tourism are the dozen plus hotels in West Hollywood, whose roughly 2,000 rooms expect to be booked up by not only festival attendees, but artists, media and associated staff. “A Music Festival impacts a local area hotels’ performance from an occupancy perspective. WHAT’S THE CHAMBER BEEN UP TO? CHAMBER BLOG CORNER

Special Events Committee held August 8, 2014By: Enoch Miller, WHCC Administrative AssistantThe Special Events Committee (SEC) met today to go over our 2014 Creative City Awards (CCA). We are excited to welcome several new members to the team. Gen announced that Lou Adler has accepted to be our next Lifetime honoree which totally helps to tie to a great rock and roll theme. The committee reviewed the suggested creative from RED Studios and of the two examples and loved the “lips”/rocky horror-themed creative over the neon. It was suggested to create a hybrid of the two and to keep Ruben’s dynamic 70’s movie poster look. There was an introduction to Michael Habicht from iii Designs, who will be our event producer this year. Discussion ensued about what the event entailed and some suggestions for vendors and sponsors that the committee could reach out to. SEC discussed the silent auction and pros and cons of electronic bidding. Soliciting items from our members to put online and begin the bidding and promotion prior to the event was a plus. We also discussed creating two distinct levels of event tickets for the pre-reception and awards dinner. Finally the committee reviewed the submissions from the Nominee Survey from the membership. Staff will be compiling a final list for the board to review and vote on at their next meeting. This year’s committee consists of a wealth of event professionals and we are very fortunate to have their talents on our team to produce one of the best CCA events in 31 years!!!

Member Relations Committee held July 14, 2014By: Matthew Clark, WHCC Director of Membership & EventsThe Member Relations Committee recently introduced some new members to the committee, as well as welcomed back returning members. While continuing the normal tasks of the committees such as member outreach, new member introductions, and welcoming members and non-members at mixers, the committee has broadened their scope of duties. The committee members suggested they take on more responsibility with planning networking mixers, implementing new ways to connect with members, and creating different strategies for bringing in new Chamber Members. The Member Relations Committee is growing in width and breadth and the exciting new ideas and innovative strategies shared here are a testament and a reflection of the creative and diverse membership we have in West Hollywood.

Marketing/PR Committee held July 8, 2014By: Mylena Christina, Chair of Marketing CommitteeThe Marketing/PR Committee met and discussed the current results of our #PLAYWEHO Instagram contest. We are one week into this contest and we want to see more submissions. Considering this to be a dip of our toe in the new world of Instagram (IG), we are learning that it will take just a few heavy IG influencers to reach the tipping point so that we can start receiving the medium’s viral benefits. It was decided to remain focused on the remaining week of the contest and re-spread the word to our members.

The Committee also discussed ideas for the upcoming SHOP WEHO portion of our Eat Shop Play Campaign; the group liked the idea of bumper stickers with our campaign hashtags. We also liked the possibility of producing t-shirts and playful press-on tattoos that could catch on with the demographics of our social media-minded audience. There was also discussion about the redesign of the fold-out membership application which will include the new nifty tiered membership infographic that was created in-house. Finally, we discussed ideas for the next issue of WORKS magazine and also ideas for the Creative City Awards theme and collateral.

Member Relations Committee held June 9, 2014By: Matthew Clark, WHCC Director of Membership & EventsThe committee met and discussed the interaction with Xincus and how they felt about using thisSocial business platform in place of a physical meeting. The committee reviewed new members and divided these members between them to follow up with and introduce themselves to the new members and find out how they are enjoying their membership. Discussed potential businesses for Matt to reach out to for a higher level of membership.

“I recently attended my first monthly mixer at the Sofitel Hotel. I was able to connect not only with fellow Chamber Members, but with the President herself. They did a wonderful job creating a warm & welcoming atmosphere for everyone.”

I look forward to networking more and playing a bigger part in the West Hollywood family!–Amanda Browning, Nicole Miller

WHAT’S THE CHAMBER BEEN UP TO? CHAMBER BLOG CORNER

Special Events Committee held June 13, 2014By: Enoch Miller, WHCC Administrative AssistantThe special events committee (SEC) met today to start discussions for the 2014 Creative City Awards (CCA). There were a few new faces so the committee gave a general overview of the past few CCA events and what was done with the event and creatively. The SEC reviewed changes to the event this year and use of the Hampton Court at The London for pre-reception/silent auction and discussed new bidding software used through your phone or ipads. The committee discussed ideas for a creative flyer and gave direction to RED Studios to have a couple different drafts for the next meeting. The committee then made and reviewed discussions for the Life Time Achievement Award recipient. The next meeting will be in August to discuss the nominees that were submitted from the survey.

Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC) held May 29, 2014By: Keith Kaplan, Chair of GAC So great to see the City and the Chamber working together! This month Stephanie de Wolfe, Community Development Director of the City of West Hollywood invited our GAC group to participate in a special focus group session with Matrix Consulting Group. Community businesses were able to share their experiences with the permit/application process with Building and Safety Department at City Hall and provide feedback on issues, concerns and/or suggestions for improvement. For Members it is all about making things easier and more streamlined for businesses as we recognize that every day lost is money out of your pockets. We all left the meeting confident that our concerns had been registered and excited at the prospect of meaningful improvements in the near future. A special thanks to Stephanie DeWolfe and Genevieve Morrill, our Executive Director, for making this happen.

Marketing/PR Committee held June 3, 2014By: Mylena Christina, Chair of Marketing CommitteeThe group gave feedback on Xincus based on our trial virtual meeting last month; the group discussed our interactions and opinions on the platform. The committee reviewed soliciting members for promotions for our PLAY WEHO campaign to populate our ESP website. The group thought it necessary to apply boundaries around PLAY WEHO categories to businesses such as lounges, bars, venues and events such as hotel pool parties and community arts fests, etc. to keep true to the theme. We are choosing Instagram as the platform for our #PLAYWEHO contest for its rising popu-larity and the chamber’s need to delve into this outlet. The simple contest consists of people posting “West Hollywood-taken” photos or videos that best exemplify our city’s playful-ness. Contestants must follow and tag our Instagram handle, @wehochamber, and use #PLAYWEHO for us to track the entries. The photo with the most LIKES during the contest duration of June 23rd through July 6th wins what we tout as the ultimate PLAY WEHO prize of member-donated items.

We love being a member of West Hollywood’s Chamber Events, Top Business Results and Excellent Opportunities, but the BEST part is the chamber‘s friendly staff and service.”

The event, sponsored by Faring Capital, was an elaborate luncheon catered by Global Cuisine by Chef Gary Arabia on Sound Stage 7 at The Lot. In collaboration with the City of West Hollywood, State of The City 2014: Eastside Get Ready for Your Close-up examined how the City’s redevelopment efforts on the Eastside have catalyzed the resurgence of entertainment and film industry businesses and promoted people to live, work, and play in West Hollywood. Mayor D’Amico shared the City’s emerging vision for a vibrant Eastside for ‘start-up’ businesses, and the City Manager, Paul Arevalo spoke about the economic vitality of the city at large. The highlight of the program was a conversation with Erik Logan, President of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network and Harpo Studios led by NBC4 anchor/reporter, Robert Kovacik. Logan discussed OWN’s decision to relocate their headquarters to the historic movie studio, The Lot, and what attracted them to West Hollywood. The event exceeded fundraising and attendance projections, filling The Lot sound stage to capacity with 300 stakeholders who all enjoyed an ambience beautifully executed by Chamber Members (listed on page 39). As part of its annual tradition, the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored Monarch Group and Essex Property Trust (Monarch/Essex) with State of The City 2014 Economic Development Award for their significant contribution to the revitalization of the eastside with the development of The Huxley and The Dylan complexes. Monarch/Essex is a joint partnership between Monarch Group and Essex Property

Minimum Wage

The City of West Hollywood adopted a Resolution on September 8th to support an increase in the federal minimum wage and directed the City Manager to gather information and provide analysis regarding wages in West Hollywood. In the last year, there has been significant attention given to increasing the minimum wage on the federal level. Recognizing that California has a higher cost of living, the State of California requires that workers be paid a higher minimum wage than required by federal law. Starting July 1, 2014, California raised the minimum wage for workers in California to $9.00 per hour and will increase to $10.00 per hour effective January 1, 2016. Cities are also free to set their own minimum wage, provided it is not lower than the state minimum. Currently, all employees working in West Hollywood must be paid least the state minimum wage of $9.00 per hour, increasing to $10.00 per hour pursuant to state law effective January 1, 2016. Some of the main arguments against a minimum wage increase are that: it will result in employers terminating employees or forgoing new hiring; or that employers will be reluctant to hire the young, untrained, or previously unemployed. The federal minimum wage addresses this concern to some extent by letting employers pay a subminimum wage for the first 90 days of employment for new employees under age 20; this encourages the hiring of young people, who often lack training or work history, by letting employers pay lower wages for 90 days before the minimum wage applies. The Chamber is concerned about impacts to our business community which is comprised of 70% micro businesses with 2 to 4 employees and another 10% with 50 employees or less. Before the City Council can consider whether there is a need or justification to increase the minimum wage on a local basis, City Staff needs to gather sufficient data and information about wages currently being paid as well as about the economic wellbeing of local employers. One of the main recommendations of this item is that staff conduct a study to determine the wages currently being paid in West Hollywood, with a primary focus on typically-low wage workers such as restaurant support staff, food service workers, laborers, housekeepers, store clerks and the like. As part of this study, staff will look at what benefits local employers are providing in addition to the wages paid. The City Council will then look at how those wages compare to the City’s current living wage ordinance standard which applies to the entities which contract with the City. The current living wage standard is $12.02 per hour if the employer is providing health care benefits of at least $1.31 an hour and $13.33 per hour if the employer is not providing health care benefits of at least $1.31 an hour.

If the City Council ultimately chooses to adopt a minimum wage which is higher than the wage set by the State of California, the Council would also have to determine whether to phase in the increase, and how to do so. The Chamber is taking an active role in representing its business community to the City and recently implemented a survey for business community response and asking for feedback on this proposed ordinance.

Since 2004, Athens Sevices has been an extraordinary partner for the City of West Hollywood, creating an award-winning program that diverts roughly 400 tons of food-waste monthly. West Hollywood is one of a handful of cities in California that have food-waste programs. Athens has provided a myriad of sustainable benefits for the commercial sector and is seeking an extension of their agreement with the city that would include no additional rate increases during this period (until June, 2019). Changing out a vendor such as waste management with a city who has extremely high green and sustainable standards is not easy nor seamless. Many waste management providers seek long term agreements with their municipalities – similar to an electric company, cable provider or sanitation and sewage. They must create infrastructure to service cities with high standards like West Hollywood. Long term agreements allow them to invest in infrastructure and amortize these costs over years. From the Chamber’s perspective there were two issues to consider support: What is the long term cost for businesses and will Athens maintain their high level of service? The Chamber felt that by supporting Athens we would preserve those two things. Reviews from businesses are very supportive of Athens as a service provider and amazing contributor in the community.

The Melrose Triangle Project is probably one of the most significant developments in West Hollywood because it is our entrance from the west end gateway into our City. As you drive eastbound on Santa Monica Boulevard, the project will create an urban vitality, with restaurants, retail and office lining the Boulevard in prominent, well-scaled buildings announcing you have arrived in West Hollywood. Charles Company had a vision nearly 14 years ago for this property at Doheny and Melrose. With the talented architectural firm of Studio One Eleven, Charles Company has created a vision which West Hollywood can be proud of for a stunning, mixed-use, commercial and residential 2.7 acre triangular site bounded by Santa Monica Boulevard, Melrose Avenue and Almont Drive. The development would consist of three buildings, referred to as the Gateway Building, the Boulevard Building, and the Avenue Buildings. With generous streetscape, with a gentle curve of the building frontage is a nice gesture at the street, opening up toward the “Paseo” or “Pedestrian Boulevard” between buildings that connect Santa Monica Boulevard to Melrose Avenue.

Oak Coast has become a new participating business in West Hollywood whose goals as developers of creative housing are consistent with the goals of the city at large- high quality, modern, pedestrian oriented, urban housing alternatives that serve a wide range of demographic and economic sectors. Their latest project proposed at 1250 North Fairfax consists of 53 apartment units including 12 affordable units is located on the east side of Fairfax Avenue. The design embraces West Hollywood’s long and successful tradition of courtyard projects and divides the program into four individual three to four story tall buildings. The buildings are grouped around a central landscaped courtyard on top of a single story podium level housing the building’s parking and grade level apartments and lobby areas. The project gains additional needed parking and affordable units.

The 8899 Beverly Boulevard project developed by Townscape Partners will breathe new life into an area of the West Hollywood Design District which would benefit from increased economic and pedestrian activity. The project takes a blighted building and repurposes it with elevated residential and retail options for a luxury lifestyle area. In determining support recommendations, the Chamber evaluates the overall impact of the economic health and viability a project brings to the business community. In this case the addition of market rate and affordable housing units, as well as new retail businesses, will bring more vitality and foot traffic to this area of town. Secondly, repurposing this out-of-date office building into a mixed-use project will benefit the community through de-intensification in terms of both traffic and parking including new retail businesses. And finally, plans for widening of the sidewalks, new paving, lighting and landscaping enhances the district and supports surrounding businesses – meeting the City’s objectives for a pedestrian -friendly, Live, Work and Play environment.

Australia has evolved to become recognized as having some of the world’s best and most innovative Asian dining experiences. EP WeHo wants to emulate this success by introducing EP to West Hollywood, with a sophisticated, exciting and atmospheric space for a wide variety of patrons to enjoy. The rooftop will be a natural extension of the restaurant where patrons will get a similar experience to the restaurant with unparalleled outdoor dining and uninterrupted views of West Hollywood and Los Angeles landmarks.
