June Horoscopes and Birthdays
Welcome Dr. Sina Sajed
Denise Jackson
In astrology, those born from June 1–20 are the Twins of Gemini. With a feeling that something or someone is always missing, Twins forever seek new friends and opportunities. They are curious and sociable communicators. Those born from June 21–30 are Cancer’s Crabs. Crabs like to retreat into their “shells” and enjoy being surrounded by loved ones at home, where they nurture deep and lasting relationships.

Remembrance Tree
To commemorate those we have lost to COVID-19 and all the hard work our staff has dedicated themselves to, Extendicare held a virtual memorial on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. local time at West Park LTC. We had our chaplain and managers set up in the community hall and on units for emotional support while we all shared stories on how we overcame and worked together and still are. We also created a communal art piece where finger prints were stamped on the tree as leaves to have as a lasting art piece.
Father’s Day arrives on the third Sunday of June, and with it comes the traditional giving of cards, ties, and loving thanks. In 1909, Sonora Scott Dodd was attending a Mother’s Day church service when it occurred to her that there did not exist an equivalent holiday to honor fathers. By Dodd’s account, her father was a model parent, acting as both father and mother to Dodd and her siblings. She convinced her church to celebrate the first Father’s Day on her
father’s birthday, June 5, but the clergy needed more time to organize such an event. They decided to hold a Father’s Day service on the third Sunday of June instead, a tradition that has endured. Happy Fathers Day to all our wonderful dads and granddads out there. Check out our beer and friend program, ice cream parties and much more on your calendars
West Park Healthcare Construction Update Fun Facts
How much concrete is
needed to build West Park’s new hospital?
As of April 1, about 3,300 concrete trucks have passed through West Park. Another
1,300 more trucks are expected to complete the new hospital.
Given the average concrete truck has the capacity to carry eight cubic metres, the new
hospital requires about 36,800 cubic metres of concrete or about 15 Olympic sized
swimming pools!
Inpatient Block
The sixth floor is complete for both the North and South Inpatient Blocks. Construction
workers will now begin creating the penthouse level (roof) where the new building’s
mechanical services, such as air handling units and exhausts, are held.
Each level is at varying stages of installing sprinklers and drainage pipes, studs for the
walls, framing, masonry work and installing “rough-ins,” which are electrical boxes,
lighting, fire alarm, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).
Outpatient Block
Below, installation of mechanical drainage lines are
underway for the three levels of underground parking in the Outpatient Block.
Above, construction crews just began forming the concrete
floor for a section of Level 5. This section of the Outpatient Block, which connects to the
Inpatient block, is being developed faster because the builders want to reach the
penthouse level (roof), so they can fully install the new building’s mechanical services.
Seniors Month / Pride Month/ Indigenous Month Seniors Month is in June and we
will be hosting some fun parties,
karaoke events, education and
much more throughout the
month. We will also be starting
up our Senior Of The Year
Award Nominations.
We are recognizing all our
amazing residents and clients
by showcasing their stories and
telling the world how they make
a difference in their community.
All nominees will receive a
certificate, picture hung in our
community hall and celebration
party.
Nomination forms can be found
at reception or a story and
picture can be given to the
program manager Elise
Robertson.
Thank you to all our amazing
seniors for everything you have
done and do
Pride month and Indigenous
Month is also in June.
Look out on each calendar
for programs celebrating
and educating the residents
this month. When asked about the history
of pride, often the first thing that
comes to people's minds are
the Stonewall Riots. Canada,
however, has it's own rich
history and turning points in the
struggle for and eventual
celebration of LGBT rights.
The most well known of these
are the Toronto raids which
lead to riots that turned into
what is today, a vibrant pride
festival. Learn more on our
education bristol board at the
front lobby
In June, Canadians celebrate
National Indigenous History
Month to honour the history,
heritage and diversity of
Indigenous peoples in Canada.
It is also an opportunity to
recognize the strength of
present-day Indigenous
communities.

Culture Club and Mural Artist Updates Culture club We are looking for interested participants who want to start up our culture club again and learn about different cultures while sampling some traditional food items. As we are still cohorting and not able to have our meals together in the community hall as we used to with our monthly theme we are proposing to host mini education events where we learn about the places we want to travel, virtually travel and explore through videos and educate ourselves on the culture while trying or baking a traditional snack/dish. This also gives us an opportunity to connect and reach out to more residents and
capture more cultures. Previous years we travelled and tasted places like Italy, Mexico, japan, Greece, Germany, Poland, India, UK, china, Peru and many other places. Let us know where you want to go, what you want to see, and what you want to taste. Murals Mural Artist Emma is coming back to do our donation wall on
the second floor outside of the elevators in June.
Donated by the White family in
honour of their loved one who lived here and enjoyed the patio, we are looking forward to
the resident’s vision of flowers that lead us to the outdoor patio. Bright colors, large
abstract images of florals and a fresh space is going to make the area wonderful.
Activity Lobby Cart There are two new carts near the lobby entrance: the one on right is filled with activities to complete on your own, or with a family member/visitor/staff. The cart on the left is where these activities are to be returned when you are finished with them. Recreation staff will then sanitize them and replace the items to be used by someone else. We are hoping this will help make essential visits meaningful, stimulating and engaging between visitors and residents. We would love your input on the items and how the activities are
going.
Memory Box Revamp Keep your eyes peeled for our memory box redecorating on all the units! For those residents who have chosen not to add their own decorations to the memory box displays outside their room, the recreation team has begun to colorfully spruce up the spaces. If you would like your memory box to be decorated, speak to the recreation staff on the unit to assist in this process or look our for next months memory box decorating programs.
Palliative care carts
New palliative care carts have come to west park. They are wooden carts with a nice fresh and clean homey feel. Products that can be found on some of the carts are: Candles, aromatherapy, fan, legacy note cards or paper, tissues, lotion, cd’s, palliative care brochure and much more. At this time we have had to remove tea and biscuits due to covid restrictions but will add them back when we can. The residents are still provided tea, snacks and food items it is just the family food items that have been removed as masks are not to be taken off during visitations.
Each cart is individualized for each residents who becomes palliative with input from the resident and family as to what would best comfort them. We would love your feedback on what you like or what you want to see for our palliative care carts. More information on our palliative care services can be found in our brochures in our spiritual room or family information board by the lobby.
Booking Visits
Looking to book an outdoor visit with a loved one? Call reception at 416-614-9494 and they can arrange a time for you and your family member or friend to visit. Essential caregivers are still allowed to visit inside the home and do not need a booking time. We are not recommending to bring pets at this time unless they are a certified therapy dog or service animal. We encourage you to keep your pets at home and it is very
difficult to sanitize our fury friends. Again masks are to be worn at all times and eating food and drinks together is not permitted. If you wish to bring a store bought item for a loved one or have a delivery come please ensure to sanitize items with our screeners. Thank you for working with us and being patient as we navigate the next stages of reopening.
