PAGE LAYOUT CONVENTIONSWednesday: Composition - Where to start on a page…
Aims:
1. To understand how page layout conventions can be used to support better visual communication/language.
2. To understand the different page layout conventions available to the designer.
3. To be able to use a modular grid to guide the design of a page layout.
4. To be able to make links to your design intentions and embed understanding in sketchbook work.
Layout Conventions:
Rule of thirds Modular Grids Golden Ratio
Bridge task:
• Not using examples with thirds lines on them, select at least five instances of the use of the rule of thirds in design, photography, or art and discuss using:• Describe• Reflect• Formally evaluate
• Answer the following questions for each example:• How does the rule of thirds help to communicate the
message of the image or design, and why?
• How does the rule of thirds help to structure design work?
• How might you use the rule of thirds to produce design work that communicates better with the audience, and why?
• What other layout conventions might be used to create design work?
MODULAR GRIDSBreaking up the page and managing design structure
What is a Modular Grid?
• Grids are used within design to break up the page into manageable chunks for the viewer to follow the design and be lead through the content.
Modular Grid Layout:
• How is the grid working here?
Modular Grids:
• Can you see the grid?
• What does it bring to the design?
Task 1 – analyse the image:• Using the describe,
reflect, formally analyse model; discuss the images provided.
• What are the benefits to the reader of using this type of grid?
• What words come to mind when looking at this design?

The Benefits of Modular Grids:
• A guide for positioning content
• Break up the page in order to support comprehension
• Create a more pleasing composition
• Create an entry point in the design
• Give a sense of structure in the design
• Help in leading the viewer through the composition
• Support the hierarchy of the elements of the design
Active Task:• Explore music poster design by other designers
• Using stock images and content; produce an advertising poster under the theme below • Battle of the Bands
• Stratford Arts Centre
• Friday October 9th 2015
• 7.30-11.00pm
• Entry: £10.00
• Contact: 01789 123456
• Review and evaluate your production • How does it communicate visually?• What elements have you used an why?• What page layout have you used an why?• Was your research useful and why?
Bridge task: For Thursday 12.50am Printed
• Not using examples with grid lines on them, select at least five instances of the use of a modular grid in design, and discuss using:• Describe• Reflect• Formally evaluate
• Answer the following questions for each example:• How does a modular grid help to structure design
work, and why?
• When thinking of modular grids and the page layout created from them, list the words that come to mind.
• How might these words be used to communicate visually to the audience?

Plenary:• I feel the most important thing I learnt today was?
• With the information I learnt today, I will now be able to…
• After today’s lesson I can now explain.
• Today I was able to make progress because…
• The part of the lesson I found easiest was…
• If was to set homework to build on today’s lesson I would…
• I am proud of myself today because….
• I think it is important to remember what I learnt today because…
• One thing I think I did really well was…
• Next time I would like to learn…
