Dear Friends, I want to publicly thank our team at St. Matthew's for their efforts in pulling together a meaningful Lent and Holy Week season and Easter celebration. This was Pastor Ray's first such season as an ordained cleric, and his fine efforts in the areas of Lenten-Holy Week programs and sermons are very much appreciated. This was Camie Dewey's
first such season as our Youth and Family Minister, and her efforts to provide spiritual learning for our children and youth were excellent, as well as making sure that we had nursery coverage for almost everything that was offered. Our administrative assistant, Desiree Bougeaux, experienced her first Lent-Holy Week season ever and handled it with aplomb. During Holy Week we held 13 different services in 8 days, and she saw to it that bulletins were created and printed; these form the basis of our worship together. Thank you to Marjorie Suedekum for scheduling everyone. Richard Morgan and the choir did a magnificent job all the way through; the expanded choir on Good Friday and the brass on Easter Sunday just added to it all. A big thank you to the Altar Guild for their holy and gracious efforts on behalf of the church and God. My seminary liturgics professor was the renown Lewis Weil. He said, "To do church you must have two things: a priest and al altar guild." Finally there were many hands that took on cleaning and preparation and reading and serving, you are all very much appreciated!
I have heard this time of year referred to as the shoulder season or mud season; I think those terms do a disservice to the beauty of spring in the Grand Valley. I have watched the tree outside my office window turn from barren, to budding, to covered with white flowers, to white flowers with leaves, to only leaves -- in the matter of a month's time. The birds that fled our -8 degree temperatures have returned, and along with those that stuck with us in January, they're singing. I don't know how our rabbit survived the winter, but he did, and he is hopping about St. Matt's grounds as well.
Then there are the spring graduates. We have two at church. Katie Aust graduates from the University of Northern Colorado with a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, which she plans to put to use on the Western Slope. Jaymee Galbasini graduates from Fruita Monument High School and plans to attend Colorado Mesa University. These are accomplishments! The dropout rate for high school seniors is about 8% in Colorado (source: Colorado Department of Education), and of

course drop outs from college are higher and master's programs even higher. This means getting up and going to class when you feel like sleeping in or when your friends are cutting school to go skiing. It means missing family events because papers are due and perhaps sending a quick mother's day card because final exams are the next day. It means studying and staying focused. Congratulations to both of these young women!
Spring seems particularly suited for Easter. The world seems fresh and new, good things are happening and there is reason to celebrate. It all reminds me of a bit of the Song of Solomon, "... now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance." (2:11-13a)
For me it is easy to appreciate God's creation in the spring in Western Colorado! May the abundance of spring be shared with our community!

Easter Excitement at St. Matt's!
Easter dawned warm and beautiful this year, a perfect day to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The Easter Vigil began with a new fire, lit outside to, to light the Paschal Candle. The joy spread through three ser-vices with singing and music and a special brass band at the 10:30 service. Our congregation provided a spe-cial potluck to welcome visitors, while all the children went on an egg hunt. When the angel asked the women at the tomb, "Why are you looking for the living among the dead?" we knew the answer: He Is Risen!

Senior Warden’s Report
Ambassadors for giving are we. Wait, please, before you tune out, turn the page, or move on without further ado I said, for giving not of giving. This is not a stewardship letter or request. This is a call to arms, and of eyes and ears. This a request for input, and an appeal for awareness. As I write this I continue to dwell on this concept that we are all ambassadors for giving. The desire to give to a known cause, to identify new needs and to satisfy, or more so, to satiate the cries of others comes from within. The Holy Spirit, the encourager, the great exhorter abides within the heart of every believer. To live into the calling of being someone’s Samaritan requires action. Action accomplished by removing the one space between the words for giving. Thus forming the word forgiving. It is possible to see hope and opportunity upon observing a need. Possible and probable. But, only when we forgive ourselves for being unwilling, forget that we are unable , and free ourselves from feeling unworthy (all in our own eyes). As an individual it is easy to be overcome by the needs others, and easier to discount our ability to have an impact. But, as members of this congregation, we are ambassadors, and as such, representatives backed by this collective community. A community that understands, indeed believes, ‘where two or three are gathered …..there Christ will be’. And further believe that if indeed Christ is present, all scarcity is replaced by abundance. And finally in faith we know that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. So, please as you see a need in the community, in the neighborhood, in the church itself, I invite you to think of us all as a potential extension of yourself. We are the community of faith known as St Matthew’s Church. A church that above and beyond it’s limited financial resources, is blessed with an abundance of human capital. Human capital; resources of the mind, assets of knowledge, and a vast amount of the currency called compassion. This collective, strong and able stands ready. Ready, as each of us individually become aware of unmet needs. Ready, as individuals are overwhelmed by what needs exist. Ready, as each of us find ourselves continuing to buckle under the weight or the magnitude of need. It is unfortunate at times some needs will remain. But it should not be because individuals are unable to overcome, especially when as a community of faith we are many, and as the old adage goes………many hands make light work. So, as you see a need however great or small, stand tall as a St Matthews ambassador for giving and ask what if St Matthew’s could take this on ………then find a vestry member to champion your cause with you, or for you. Letter from St. Matt’s Missionary in the Dominican Republic
Dear Partners in Mission,
For some weeks, the bulletin was announcing that Easter is the next baptism day. Those in-terested should contact the church and participate in the classes one day a week. I was asked to be Godmother to one of the interested boys, Reynaldo. I spoke with Farre, a gentle-man here who has frequently been called on to be Godfather, to learn about how this culture
views this role. His description included being a ‘protector’ for the child. They held a run through for the God-parents shortly thereafter and I learned that Reynaldo’s birth certificate wasn’t here. So, my role as protector came into play even before the baptism. The next day I rode with Fr. Felix to deliver a pair of crutches to someone who had been using her umbrella to unweight her injured leg. En route, I asked more about the birth certificate requirement. Since the baptismal certificate becomes a legal document, the church requires the birth certificate for all baptisms. Following that, I visited the family to see what the situation was. His mother works in the capital during the week and is only home on weekends, but their Aunt takes care of them during the week. She didn’t know the certificate wasn’t here and quickly mobilized the family to get the certifi-cate in time for the baptism. First mission appears to have been accomplished, with God’s help. Please pray that I will be a faithful guide to Reynaldo in his walk with Christ and will know when to step in and when not to i n t h e f o l l o w i n g years. May God bless and guide you in all you do!

"I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection..." (Phil. 3:10) Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, ALLELUIA, CHRIST IS RISEN! (You can say the response to yourself, even if no one else is around to hear you. Ha ha.) Have you noticed that we never say "He was risen" or "He has been raised"? It would make sense in a way to say this because we are talking about a past event after all. But just like Easter isn't relegated to one Sunday a year in our church way of reckoning time, Jesus Christ's resurrection for us is more than a one Sunday a year event in our lives as Christians. We say it in the present tense. It's a reality for us right now, in our time and place! For many of us, understanding Je-sus' resurrection is a mystery. After all, we weren't there to bear witness to what those first disciples experi-enced. But on some level, even if we can't quite grasp all of the implications of what happened at Jesus' res-urrection, there's something about it that stirs our imaginations and touches us deeply in the dark places of ourselves longing for new life. This is the part of the story where God's YES to Jesus also becomes in a very real and very powerful way God's YES to us, which was really God's YES to us all along. May you continue to encounter the power of the Risen Lord in your life through this Easter season, may you be open to the joy and wonder of knowing that you know that you know that you are beloved of God, and may that call you to new life again and again. Youth and Family News
Sunday School:
The Pre-K-2nd grade class has begun a new, fun Veggie Tales curriculum. Each session lasts four weeks and will likely take us through the summer! The first four weeks has focused on Thankfulness and the tale of Madame Blueberry’s hard lesson of greediness. The sec-ond four weeks will focus on faith in God, using the Bible story of David and Goliath, reimag-ined into a tale of one small asparagus fighting a mighty pickle in boxing gloves! The following eight weeks will focus on putting others first with the help of King David, and courage, using the story of Esther. These lessons are filled with silly songs, video clips and easy to understand lessons for kids! ♪ If you like to talk to tomatoes… ♪
Bible Stories:
Bible Stories will continue through the summer discussing the numerous, amazing things Jesus did while he walked the earth. Some of the up-coming topics include:

Hello, my name is Tyler Therkildsen. I am a sophomore at Grand Junction High School. I play rugby for the local team and I love to in-spire kids! I plan to enter the Naval Academy in order to be-come a Medicorps man for the United States Marine Corps. I am also happy to able to be part of such the wonderful church program that is the St. Matthew’s nursery!
Aloha! I'm Rachel Joy Farias. I was born and raised in Hawaii, on the island of Kaua'i. I am a student at CMU studying elementary education. I am also involved with Colorado Mesa's Rodeo Team. I've always loved children; I
have dreamed of being a teacher since preschool. I'm so excited to be working in the nursery. St. Matthew’s has become a new little 'ohana (family) away from home.

Middle School Youth Group:
Both the middle school and high school youth groups will be working and organizing the church yard sale on May 24th. This will count as our spring fundraiser!
To finish the school year, the middle school youth group will be taking a look at some of the pop culture phenomenon and looking at them from a Christian/theological perspective.
Beginning in June, as new, incoming middle school students are expected to join the group, focus will shift to healthy habits and figuring out how keeping ourselves in good shape and hav-ing good eating habits make us better equipped to play for God’s team!
High School Youth Group:
The high school youth group has enjoyed hitting the theater to experience a couple of the Christian films that have recently been released. They joined the “God’s Not Dead” movement, texting their friends and family with the simple statement, making their faith a widely known fact amongst the people close to them.
The plan for the next few weeks is to go through the book Heaven is For Real, and have deeper discussions regarding heaven and what we might be able to expect.
This will wrap up the school year, and we will begin a summer curriculum when our new incoming high-schoolers join in June!
INCOMING MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS! You are invited to begin attending youth group on June 1st! Middle school youth group meets Sundays at 5:30pm, and high school youth group meets Mondays at 5:00pm.
BEGINNING IN JUNE: Youth group will go to every other week due to vacations and other summertime activities. Schedules are available from Camie in the church office.
Congratulations to Jaymee Galbasini as she graduates from Fruita Monument High School! Jaymee has been a dedicated staff member in the St. Matthew’s nursery for over a year, recently stepping into the supervisor position. She has chosen to study Biology at Colorado Mesa University with the intention of going on to focus her work and further education on large felines. Way to go, Jaymee! We are so proud of you!

From Your Cursillo Parish Representative... Cursillo is a wonderful three-day weekend intended to help Christians learn
and live what is fundamental as a Christian, and to help these same Chris-
tians to discover and live out a personal vocation. Cursillo is a movement of
the Episcopal Church, under the authority of the Presiding Bishop and Dioce-
san Bishops. The goal of Cursillo is to bring the world to Christ by empowering adult Christian leaders
through the use of a specific method, which equip and encourages Christians to live out their Baptismal
Covenant to serve Christ.
The word, Cursillo (pronounced: coor-SEE-oh), comes from Spanish and means “a short course of lectures.”
The full title, CURSILLOS IN CRISTIANDAD, has been translated, “short courses in Christian living.”
The next weekend will be held on September 11-14 at the Highlands Presbyterian Camp in Allenspark.
Lay Leaders are Sean and Chelli McGaughey and the theme for the weekend is “We Are Called”. If you
would like to attend the weekend or sponsor someone for the weekend, please contact Sharon Conrad
([email protected]). She has applications and more detailed information.
Artist of the Month Robbie Breaux began “throwing pots” in 2003. As a former pharmacist and aspiring artist, the chemistry of compounding glazes and firing pots and the physical 3-D art form of pottery appealed to her. She fell in love with ceramics and The Art Center. Having retired from being office manager for the Pediatric Clinic at St. Mary’s after 17 years, she can be found at The Art Center most days working, playing, or teaching in the ceramics studio. Terry Shepherd, the 3-D Artist-in-Residence at The Art Center, is her mentor, and she has studied with other local ceramics instructors, including Gary Andrews, Dan Patten, and Nina Williams. Robbie has also attended many workshops given by nationally renowned ceramic artists, including Tom and Elaine Coleman, Pete Pinnell, Jim Romberg, Paul Soldner, Bill van Gilder, Lana Wilson, Michael Wisner, and Bryan Yancey. She has especially become known for her impressed and carved pieces which never stray far from their functional origins. She now teaches a ceramics class and is having a wonderful time showing others the joy of making art from clay. Her work is available for viewing and purchase at the Oakley Gallery located in Interiors, Etc. on Main Street in downtown Grand Junction.
animate:BIBLE begins Sunday, June 15th, at 5:00 pm and runs every Sunday for seven weeks. Our time to-gether will include a Celtic eucharist.
What is animate:BIBLE? It's an adult faith formation course designed to get you creatively thinking more deeply about scripture. A DVD com-ponent to the group discussions features leading voices in Christian theology and faith, including Phyllis Tickle, blogger Rachel Held Evans, and Jay Bakker (son of former tele-vangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker). How did we get the Bible? What's the over-arching story? What about all those unpleasant parts in the Old Testament? Do we read scripture or does scripture read us? Loving the Lord and Offering His Love to All By The Power of the Holy Spirit Views on Stewardship
The word "stewardship" in the church usually makes us think of money. But when we think of "steward," we are more likely to think of "caretaker." The Stewardship Committee would like you to take a moment to consider these two words - steward and stewardship. Please consider that these two words are closely related. Take a moment to think about what these words mean to you. We'll get you started:
Steward:
1) Examine ourselves to be sure that our lives are on the right Christian course.
2) Be vigilant that we control our appetites and impulses so they do not control us.
3) Care for the earth and all its elements.
Stewardship:
1) How the precious gifts that God has given to all are used and cared for.
2) The careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.
3) The Lord calls all to be good stewards in everything that is done.
