Most Holy Trinity

It is oftentimes good to stand

before a mystery of life and

ponder it. Today we stand before

the profound mystery of God: One God,

three Persons; a mystery people have

pondered since the beginning of time.

Because God has been and should be a big

part of our lives, we should ponder the

mystery of God so as to understand God a

little better, to be in awe, and to celebrate

more profoundly the God we worship, love,

listen to, desire to be with, and try to be

like.

A Child’s Letter to God: Dear God, My daddy says he

would not want your job for anything in the world. He

is an electric engineer. But could you make it so he

doesn’t work all the time? You should not work so hard

either. Love Myrna A Collection of More Children’s Letters to God

It takes time for us to grow into mature Christians, into saints. It takes time for God's grace to penetrate our minds and hearts. Jesus doesn't expect us

to become perfect overnight, just as he didn't expect his Apostles to under-stand everything right away. He is willing to work with us, to wait, to put up

with us for as long as it takes. This is God's methodology: patience and patient persistence. There is an old Jewish story about God's patience. Ac-

cording to the ancient tale, Abraham was sitting outside his tent one evening when he saw an old man, weary from age and many travels, coming toward him. Abraham rushed out, greeted him, and then invited him into his tent. There he washed the old man's feet and gave him food

and drink. The hungry traveler immediately began eating, just as soon as Abraham put the food in front of him. He didn't pause to say any kind of grace or prayer; he didn't bless the

food or anything. So Abraham asked him, "My brother, don't you worship God, the Creator of the world, who has given us the earth and all its bounty of food and drink?" The old traveler paused and looked up at Abraham. Then he looked back down at his plate, started eating

again, and replied, "I worship fire only, the sacred flames that rise to heaven. I worship no other god." When Abraham heard this, he was shocked; then he became angry. He

knocked away the plate of food, grabbed the old man by the shoulders, and threw him out of his tent into the cold night air. The old man said nothing, took one last look at Abraham as he stood in the opening of the tent, and then began to walk slowly into the desert. Abraham

watched him go, then turned and went back inside. Then God called to his friend Abraham and asked where the stranger was. Abraham replied, "Almighty God, Creator of the heavens and

the earth, I sent that old man away because he did not worship you." God answered, "My son! I have suffered him and watched over him these eighty years, although he dishonors me. Could you not endure him for one night?" How gentle God is! How patient! How easily we

take his patience for granted! God's love, patience with his children, mercy and compassion, are the attributes that give God the name Father. On this Father's Day I would like to send all

kinds of blessings from God and personal wishes for our fathers especially here at St. Boniface.

May His love and kindness be always a guide for you. Happy Father's Day.

+ Father Roger

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: The Most Holy Trinity; Father’s Day; Julian Calendar Pentecost Monday: Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time Wednesday: St. Romuald Friday: St. Aloysius Gonzaga; Summer begins Saturday: St. Paulinus of Nola; Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More;

THIS IS THE HOLY TRINITY Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, one of the most confounding mysteries of our faith. Through this mystery we experience our relationship to God: Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit. This relationship is not easy to understand or to describe. It does not become clearer through analysis. Its complexity mirrors the complexity of all our relationships. We understand our relationships with our spouses, our children, our parents, and our friends only through daily give-and-take, annual rituals, and the life-changing moments we share. We understand our relationships only as we live them. The relationships we have with those we love, and who love us, sustain us through an uncertain and difficult life. This is the Holy Trinity. What is striking about today’s readings is that each is incomplete. What they do offer is a description of a moment in our relationship, a memory of a time and an event when our relationship made sense even though that sense may be beyond our ability to describe fully. Often that is all that our faith offers, that is, a memory of what is possible, what is promised, what has been given. A memory of eternity, of love beyond understanding is to be cherished and nurtured even if not fully understood. This is the Holy Trinity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of worship centers on the mystery of God in three persons. At baptism, we are initiated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we recite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of baptism, when a new believer was questioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit? Three questions, three affirmations, three immersions into the saving waters. Because every liturgy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the liturgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity, showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abraham’s hospitality to angels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abundance whenever Christians gather at the table of the Eucharist to give praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Spirit. —James Field, Copyright © J. The second collection is for Our Infirmed

and Elderly Priests who have influenced many

family’s lives celebrating baptisms, communions,

matrimony, and anniversaries. They have also

helped us in times of sickness, family stress, and

funerals. This fund is a special way for us to

help with extraordinary medical expenses or

suffer a catastrophic illness. It also provides for

the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to

several retired priests in the Diocese of Joliet.

We ask that you consider making a donation to

help our aged and sick priests as an expression

of appreciation for all they have done in exem-

plifying Christ’s mercy, through their spiritual

guidance and celebration of the sacraments.

If you are attending a Mass that you requested

an intention to be said, let the ushers know if

you would like to bring up the gifts during that

Mass.

Note: There are still many mass openings for

weekdays and weekends available for 2019.

The Ladies Club will have their last meeting for the summer Monday, June 17th at 6:30pm. If you have never attended one of these meetings—it’s not too late!! Your participation in the CMAA is important. If you have not had a chance to participate in the Catholic Min-istries Annual Appeal (CMAA) this year, there is still time. A mailing will be arriving in homes shortly. We encourage you to prayerfully reflect on God’s gifts to you and to give a gift to the CMAA. Participation is the key to a success-ful appeal and a chance for our parish to receive a parish rebate, too. Every gift helps! If you do not receive this mailing and would like to make a gift to the CMAA, there are envelopes at the back of the church you can fill out and place in the offering basket during mass. We will be happy to mail it for you! Or, if you wish to make your gift online, please visit www.jolietdioceseappeal.org
