Sorry to have made an error in the names of guests at a recent party gl^len for Mrs Catherine Phillips. The name of Mrs Virginia Armbrust should have been included, and the name of Mrs Adelaide Tuthill somehow got mentioned in by mistake.
Mr and Mrs John Duryee enjoyed a fine vacation from their hardware store taking a ten day Caribbean cruise and returning Monday of thl;; week. They were accompanied by Mrs Marguerite Ghertin of Mattituck and Bergenfield, N J. Saturday of last week "Jimmy” Gildersleeve of the Duryee store, with his wife, Pauline, left for a motor trip to Myrtle Beach. Fla, for a week’s vacation.
Mr and Mi-s Walter Dohm are among other Mattitucklans seeking the warmth of Florida. They left by car last Wednesday.
Otto Wlttmeier, formerly of Aque- bogue, L I, who has been an administrative assistant of How'ard Johnson (Restaurant Company), in its Midwest division, has recently been named

Manager/Operations for the division, with offices a t Park Ridge, 111. Ho graduated from the University of New York at Delhi and worked in his family’s restaurant business before joining Howard Johnson in 1961. After starting as a manager trainee in the Midwest, he was promoted to assistant manager, manager, and area supervisor. Mr Wittmeier is the son of Mr and Mrs John Wittmeier, proprietors of the Snack Bar at Aquebogue.
A much appreciated anthem was rendered by the Junior Choir a t the Presbyterian Church Sunday morning, “Were I a Bird". The Juniors were accompanied by Mrs Marna Williams a t the organ; Miss Terry Nine, glockenspiel; Miss Shelley Wirsing, flute; and Miss Janet Reeve, woodblock.
I t ’s Girl Scout Week. The Scouts observed it Sunday, attending the services a t their respective churches. Then there are a number of attractive window' displays of their work at various stores about town.
Tlie Rosary Society of the Sacred Heart Church of Cutchogue will hold si rummage sale in the church hall on Fiiday, March 20 from 9:30 A M to 4 P M , and on Saturday the 21st from 9:30 until noon.
Miss Laura Szabat, a thirteen year old girl of Laurel, is one of the contestants in the 1970 Long Island championship national spelling bee sponsored by the N Y Daily News. She is a student a t St Isidore’s school in River- head. We wish her success. Spelling is a most Interesting subject, and a necessary one, W'iseacres tell us, for if you can’t spell, you can’t print protest signs. And Andrew Jackson has been quoted

as saying that if you can’t think ot more than one way to spell a word, you lack Imagination. And the late Charlie Gildersleeve, Mattltuck’s station agent for years, loved to tell of a telegram he was asked to send, every word spelled wrong. Here it is, sent to a meat packer by a local butcher: “Bele wunt sel. Lam doan no bout”.
And here’s a tip to anyone in doubt about whether an e or an i should come first in some of those tricky words. You Just write el, then go back and write ie over the ei, and put a dot over them and let the reader figure It out.
On Saturday, March 21, from 1:00 P M to 4 P M, there will be an Easter and Spring Sale at the Church of thr Redeemer on Sound Avenue. Tlierc will be baskets to fill wltli rare item;; and the traditional candy. Also featured will be baked goods for Easter, plants, flowers and gifts for shut-ins, many handmade gifts for every member of the family.
The February 24th meeting of the Men’s Brotherhood Church held in the Social Hall was a most enjoyable occasion. with Judge and Mrs Ralph Tuthill showing slides and talking about their trip to Russia taken last summer. Supper started with a serving of excellent clamchowder (the real home made variety) a gift from Jamesport.’s “Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe”. Then followed chef Joe Langer’s dehcious supper of Southern fried chicken, whipped potatoes, lima beans, rolls, coffee and dessert. “Chippy” Bennett and John Lovell, assisted by Dan Hallock, were the supper committee. Dessert was a special birthday cake for John Sarno, in observation of his 70th birthday.
Mrs James Wasson (Marguerite), whose talents extend to many spheres, such as vocalist, organist, music teacher. historian, etc, was the subject of a double page feature article, with six illustrations, in the Sunday New York News coloroto magazine in an entirely different milieu. Marguerite lias a most unique pet, a peahen. Her name, Cleopatra. Cleo, who is about the size of a small tui-key, but prettier, has the run of the Wasson home, where she has taken charge for three years. Her favorite room, though, is the kitchen. Her pet peeves are some peacocks who are kept outside, and with whom she does not care to associate; and the Wasson dog, with whom there is an occasional battle. Cleo must be quite a character.
Richard Joseph Tuthill, son of Mi- and Mrs Austin Tuthill of Ole Jule Lane recently enlisted in the U S Navy and is undei-golng training a t the U S Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, 111. Upon completion of his training he will return home for a brief leave.
