Dr. Langholz ’s research focuses on b iodivers i ty conservat ion and susta inable development . Much of his work takes p lace in and around protected natura l areas , especia l ly in the t ropics . His pass ion is ident i fy ing and evaluat ing land use opt ions that are ecological ly, economical ly, and socia l ly v iable . He is a recognized author i ty on the growing ro le that pr ivate lands p lay in accompl ishing the t r ip le goals of b iodivers i ty conservat ion, economic development , and socia l just ice . For example , as a past member of the Internat ional Union for Conservat ion of Nature ’s World Commission on Protected Areas , he served as a pr inc ipal author of the 2004 Pr ivate Protected Area Act ion P lan, approved by delegates f rom 152 nat ions at the 5th World Parks Congress in Durban, South Afr ica . He was a lso a Vis i t ing Fulbr ight Scholar at South Afr ica ’s Nelson Mandela Metropol i tan Univers i ty for the 2005-2006 academic year, work ing on a new book cal led Conservat ion Cowboys: Per i ls and Promise of Pr ivate ly Owned Protected Areas . Dr. Langholz ’s conservat ion work has led to media quotes in The Wal l Street Journal , the New York Times, The Economist , and other media out lets .

I NSTRUCTORSBruce Paton serves as Chair of the Fisher Internat ional MBA program, and teaches courses on susta inable business , corporate socia l responsib i l i ty, and g lobal business strategy.

His research focuses on business strategies and publ ic pol ic ies for susta inabi l i ty. A major emphasis in th is research is development of methods for des igning and evaluat ing voluntary and col laborat ive in i t iat ives to address socia l and environmental i ssues in management .

His teaching and research draws on extensive decis ion-making exper ience in industry, government and higher educat ion. Before jo in ing the faculty at Monterey Inst i tute in Fa l l 2009, he was an Associate Professor at San Francisco State Univers i ty, where he was named the Teaching Professor of the Year for the Col lege of Business in 2005. He has a lso been an Adjunct Professor at Monterey Inst i tute of Internat ional Studies , teaching weekend workshops on susta inable business , s ince 2002.
